RESPONSE 1:

Part 1:

My name is Joseph Maddox. I am 30 years old with a lovely wife, son, and four dogs. I was medically separated from the Active Duty Air Force earlier this year. Not sure if I got the better end of the deal on that one, but it is what it is. I am currently a full time student at AMU and an intern at a data analytics company. Lucky for me, the internship showed me a career path that I do not want to pursue after finishing my undergrad. I am currently majoring in Cyber Security with the hopes of working for myself at some point or a small business. My latest interest has been messing around with a raspberry pi and all the nifty things it can do. With regards to taking this class, I took the AMU Math 110 course just prior to taking this one. Both I am taking as a requirement for the degree discipline.

As for the Data Analysis ToolPak PDF, the instructions were clear and the install for office 365 was a breeze.

Part 2:

The vehicles I picked for this assignment are the vehicles I have had in my life at one point or dreamed about. The 2013 Tacoma is my current vehicle. At the time I purchased this vehicle I contemplated buying a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. My wife currently owns a 2018 Kia Sportage, however, she has shown interest in trading it in for a new Toyota 4runner. With that, I then began looking at the new 2021 Tacoma because it would be nice to have a updated vehicle. The 2000 Hyundai accent was my first car that I could afford to buy after high school. The Toyota Sienna is the reality of parenthood and I’m looking forward to the day I can drive a van… :/ The 1962 1/2 Ford Mustang and 1976 Porche 911 were the vehicles my parents owned when I was young. Lastly, the 1963 Aston Martin is the car James Bond drove in Golden Eye 007. I don’t think I need to explain this one…

RESPONSE 2:

My name is Christina and I am currently living in Florida. The past 10 years I was living abroad in Greece, but originally I grew up in Maryland. Through the pandemic I have been keeping myself busy with gardening which I have my own oregano, basil, mint, mango, lemon, and I think that’s it (for now)… I am in my last year of earning a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity. In order to gain the degree one of the classes needed was this one, so that is the reason why I am taking it. A couple facts about me, I used to work for a private company with prosthetics and orthotics but now I am working on base as an analyst. My hobbies consist of being outside whether it’s playing sports or being at the beach. I really like Latin dancing and pickle-ball which both I have recently found them to be my new hobbies in the last year. I have a dog named Bruno who is a German Shepard mix Rottweiler and is 7 years old now. I am definitely an animal lover. The last time I took a math course was probably 10 years ago. I switched paths and for this degree I needed this math course. I have been dreading this class, I saved it for one of the last classes on my list. My goal for this class is to just pass it and get it behind me. Maybe by the end of these 8 weeks I will feel more comfortable about “math”.

As I received the first week’s syllabus and lessons I did review the Data Analysis ToolPak PDF and was able to download it successfully without any issues. Well I hope these next 8 weeks go by fast and we get one step closer to our goals. I look forward to working with everyone.

For this weeks forum I choice to list 10 vehicles that are either electric or hybrid as they are economic and I am interested in buying one in the future.

-Christina

There are many alternatives to fossil fuels out there.  I’m from the east coast and up until I got stationed in California wasn’t too familiar with solar cells or wind turbines.  Being in the desert and in a valley makes real good condition for these two and they are everywhere.  Plenty of sunlight and being in a valley causes surface wind which aids in the turbines.  “A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell, is a device capable of converting energy from the Sun into electricity.” (Rohland, 2016) Even though solar cells or panels work amazing out here with all this sunlight, doesn’t mean it will work this great where the sun doesn’t shine as much. Wonderful idea but not suitable for all areas.  Same reasoning goes for the wind turbines, again not suitable for all areas is a barrier.  Physical locations and weather could be potential barriers.

Within the government there is the Department of energy.  “The Energy Department’s efforts to develop and deploy energy efficient solutions for buildings and manufacturing supply lines means large-scale energy and cost savings for all Americans.” (U.S Department of Energy, 2018) The government can greatly influence how buildings or houses for example will be built in the future.  Structures have to meet the builders code to be incompliance with guidelines and standards.  If the government changes the code to “X” material and “Y” as energy source, this will enhance the effect of saving fossil fuels.

Response 2

There are many alternatives to fossil fuels that are currently available, and one is the solar energy. One form that I know many people is using, the photovoltaic PV panels. This type of solar energy is placed on the rooftops to generate electricity and it never runs out. So far people like this renewable solar energy, they save up money on their electricity bill and they are virtually pollution free. The textbook explains how it works “Active solar energy captures sunlight using mechanical devices and then converts it to useful heat or electric power. Solar photovoltaic or PV panels convert sunlight to electricity, which is the most common form of active solar energy.” (Turk & Bensel 2014).  I think this is an amazing source of energy because it can be used in different forms like some garden items such as outdoor lighting. Moreover, in traffic lights, swimming pools, creative edge solar cell phone charger, wireless keyboard, Bluetooth speaker, generators etc. The second form I chose is the wind-wave power, this is another essential form to form energy. According to “Hybrid wind-wave systems are a type of multipurpose platform where a single platform combines the exploitation of offshore wind and wave energy.” This form of energy has advantages, one is cheaper for people to afford. Scientists still study how they can improve this form or generate energy. In this textbook “The laboratory experiments in such long-fetch conditions would be helpful for modeling small-scale air-sea coupling” (Takaki2017) The solar energy is expensive for some people and they do not have enough information about the benefits of this source. Also, some people are afraid that source may not work as good as the companies said it works. The textbook states “While the economics are increasingly favorable for renewable energy, it is the lack of political will to implement these sources and strong lobbying of politicians by the fossil fuel industry that most impede their development.” (Turk & Bensel 2014).  The government has an important role to support this transition, they should analyze every energy source and see which one is affordable for people. They should create financial plans to help people in this transition.

An explanation of the use of self during your field education experience that you may have encountered or that you might encounter

According to Ganzer (2007), the use of self allows the social worker to be better able to adjust to uncertainty through empathy and experience. In doing so, social workers would be better able to understand the client and be better apt to assist them during treatment. During this field experience, this use of self would be something that I may experience. For example, while attending my supervised visitation sessions I need to utilize my use of self by being empathetic towards the clients and the situations they are going through. In doing so, I am able to provide the proper care and resources that ensure the client’s needs are being met. In addition, I utilize my sense of self by working closely with families that are struggling to meet due to COVID restrictions. In other words, I am currently working with clients on rescheduling sessions due to children, parents and myself all getting sick. Therefore, using my sense of self I am able to put myself in the clients shoes through the frustration they are feeling about not being able to meet. While my disclosure does not exceed whether or not I am sick as well there may be times in the future that disclosure may be needed in order to build a rapport with the client. However, at this time my use of self consists of being understanding of what the clients are facing since we are all still struggling with COVID restrictions. Thus, this has allowed me to build a rapport with my clients as we work hard to ensure that all needs are being met.

A description of potential boundary challenges in your field education experience

While Ganzer (2007) discusses how the use of self-disclosure can bring forth many boundary challenges the only challenge that I may experience would be that of giving clients my personal cell number. This form of self-disclosure causes boundary challenges in the sense that it gives clients easy access to me even after hours. Which in turn can lead to a faster rate of burnout as I feel obligated to respond. In addition, this is a boundary challenge as it forces me to respond to clients on days that I am not in. With that being said, I have had to tell clients my work schedule so that they do not text outside of those hours. In doing so, this decreases boundary challenges as well as the risk of burnout.

The use of self in social work practice is the combining of knowledge, values, and skills gained in social work education with aspects of one’s personal self, including personality traits, belief systems, life experiences, and cultural heritage (Dewane, 2006). It is the use of self that enables social workers to strive for authenticity and genuineness with the clients we serve, while at the same time honoring the values and ethics, we so highly value in social work practice (Walter, 2008).

When worker are being genuine and having skills to listen and interact with patients and families effectively has required me to be intuitive. During my process recording last week, I discussed my counter with a patient’s daughter who was in denial about her father being in hospice and the seriousness of their decease. Use of self requires me to have the skill and ability to provide understanding to the approach of care and support when in conversation with the daughter. In contrast, it is not my place to dishearten her but support her in her coming to terms with her father’s condition.

I have to run into a challenge in my field with the use of self, but I imagine it would be related to understanding interventions that may be necessary to know and apply to a patient and or the bereaved party. According to Ganzer (2007), while we have come a long way from the therapist’s idea as a blank screen in practice, we still rely on the therapist’s technical expertise and effective interventions. This tendency speaks to the role of self as an instrument or tool and assumes that the therapist has some degree of knowledge of what the patient may need.

Walter (2008) states that, the use of self as a therapeutic tool, allows the worker to be able to effectively establish rapport, improve outcomes of interventions and contribute something to the field of social work no one else can contribute—”your unique personality, worldview, relationship skills, and life experience.”

I embrace my unique ability to use my personality and sense of humor to set individuals at ease and to build relationships and or rapport with clients. Due to the fact that I came from a lower socioeconomic background, where I had to face many obstacles in my own life before going to college and getting my BA degree, I am able to draw from my own feelings and experiences to develop empathy and understanding for clients and the situations they find themselves in. In this context, I employ the “use of self” in my social work field placement.

Boundaries are created due to the fact that even though I come from the lower socioeconomic status as most clients, my perception and thought process has elevated through education and applying the skills learned to create tangible change. Just because I was from the hood, I am not of the hood. Setting this boundary enables clients to want to better themselves, with myself as an example.

The use of self in social work practice is the combining of knowledge, values, and skills gained in social work education with aspects of one’s personal self, including personality traits, belief systems, life experiences, and cultural heritage (Dewane, 2006). It is the use of self that enables social workers to strive for authenticity and genuineness with the clients we serve, while at the same time honoring the values and ethics we so highly value in social work practice. In an effort to explain the use of self, I use the micro skills assessment/case management as an example of how use of self looks in professional practice (Ganzer,2007). When I engage in individual or group sessions, I am exposed to the same basic skill set (e.g., paraphrasing, summarization, responding to content, feeling, and meaning) (Poorman,2003). These skills are manifested through my personality, relational skills, and developmental capacity. The goal is to master the integration of my social work skills with my authentic self.

To integrate the authentic self into the skills required for social work field placement, it is helpful to view the use of self from five different perspectives: Use of Personality, Use of Belief System, Use of Relational Dynamics, Use of Anxiety, and Use of Self Disclosure (Dewane, 2006). Through analyzing each of the constructs and their application to my daily practice, I begin to discover the unique attributes that will enable me to relate to clients in a more authentic manner and contribute to the field of social work in a way that is uniquely reflective of me.

New Venture Opportunity and SWOT Anlysis

Instructions

New venture opportunity and SWOT analysis paper

This week we will study the SWOT analysis in detail. This week’s paper is required to be approximately 4 -6 pages in length, not including the title page and the reference page. No paper should be fewer than 1400 words. Double space your work, cite your sources, limit quotes, and edit your work well! Your work will automatically be reviewed by Turnitin upon submission. You will be able to see your similarity report within 20 minutes after your submission. Resubmits are not permitted. Please make sure you cite your work properly and avoid direct quotes.

For this assignment you will invent a new business. This is a new start – up venture, not an existing one or one that is expanding. Do not use a business created in a previous class. You may not use papers (or any part of a paper) submitted in another class. Make up the business, the location, the client base, and the product or service. Do not use any real company. You may review a real company’s website for ideas, but the basis of this paper should be your own ideas. Your opening sentence should begin with something like this: “The new business venture that I will evaluate is ……………..” Expect that your business will be opened in this coming year, not one that opened 10 years ago. Your introduction should include a description of your company and any details that are important to the reader. The description of your company should be a couple paragraphs with a summary of the business. The other details can be discussed when you are reviewing each of the SWOT elements. The final goal of this paper is to prepare a SWOT analysis of your new venture company. Make sure you have at least two other sources (other than the text) to supplement your work.

After developing your new venture and describing it thoroughly in the beginning of your paper, provide a thorough SWOT analysis. Make sure you have included the actual SWOT analysis quad chart (embedded within your paper) listing the strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities. You can use your own chart, but your paper should include a simple SWOT chart with the four segments. Then, you must discuss each segment thoroughly and explain what you have learned from performing your analysis.

So, your paper should include a title page and a reference page (no abstract is required):

1 – a description of your new venture (have a clear introduction)

2 – include a simple quad chart with the four basic quadrants embedded in your paper

3 – a thorough explanation of what you have learned from the analysis, further defining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats

4. be sure to include monetary information. You can’t evaluate a new start up for a beauty salon if you don’t include the costs to start up. How many hair cuts would you have to provide customers before you break even each month (of course you can estimate costs). For instance, you have to purchase equipment (dryers, chairs, etc) and you have to rent space (or buy space). What is the monthly rent or mortgage payment and how easily will that be earned each month. Include all other costs also (payroll, supplies, advertising, etc). Where will the start up money come from?

5 – an evaluation – based on what you have learned, will you continue your business venture? Be sure to answer that question at the close of your paper.

Submit your paper into the assignment section of the classroom.

Font and Spacing – Use Times New Roman 12 pitch font with double-spaced lines.

Length – Write a 4 to 6 page essay not including the title page and citation page. Make sure you have at least 1400 words, not counting the title and reference page.

Reference Page – Include all sources including your textbook on a Reference page

Utilize the APA Style for documenting sources. You will need to include at least two sources in addition to your textbook. Finally, remember Wikipedia is NOT a scholarly source.

Punctuation, essay format (thesis, supporting paragraphs with transition and topic sentences, and summary) grammar and documentation count toward your grade.

Case Studies : Lyme Diseases and PVD

Lyme Disease Case Study 1

A 38-year-old male had a 3-week history of fatigue and lethargy with intermittent complaints of headache, fever, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. According to the history, the patient’s symptoms began shortly after a camping vacation. He recalled a bug bite and rash on his thigh immediately after the trip. The following studies were ordered:

Critical Thinking Questions

1. What is the cardinal sign of Lyme disease? (always on the boards)

2. At what stages of Lyme disease are the IgG and IgM antibodies elevated?

3. Why was the ESR elevated?

4. What is the Therapeutic goal for Lyme Disease and what is the recommended treatment.

Peripheral Vascular Disease Case Study 2

A 52-year-old man complained of pain and cramping in his right calf caused by walking two blocks. The pain was relieved with cessation of activity. The pain had been increasing in frequency and intensity. Physical examination findings were essentially normal except for decreased hair on the right leg. The patient’s popliteal, dorsalis pedis, and posterior tibial pulses were markedly decreased compared with those of his left leg.

Diagnostic Analysis

With the clinical picture of classic intermittent claudication, the noninvasive Doppler and plethysmographic arterial vascular study merely documented the presence and location of the arterial occlusion in the proximal femoral artery. Most vascular surgeons prefer arteriography to document the location of the vascular occlusion. The patient underwent a bypass from the proximal femoral artery to the popliteal artery. After surgery he was asymptomatic.

Critical Thinking

Questions

1. What was the cause of this patient’s pain and cramping?

2. Why was there decreased hair on the patient’s right leg?

3. What would be the strategic physical assessments after surgery to determine the adequacy of the patient’s circulation?

4. What would be the treatment of intermittent Claudication for non-occlusion?

Review the case study and answer all questions with a scholarly response using APA and include 2 scholarly references. Answer both case studies on the same document and upload 1 document to Moodle.

Case Study 1 & 2 Lyme Disease and Peripheral Vascular Disease

The answers must be in your own words with reference to journal or book where you found the evidence to your answer.

Evaluation of Learning Agreement

When filling in my learning agreement, I thought about the course objectives as well as the impact of my agency in my practice. I reflected on my initial expectations and thought process and things that have changed over time after being exposed to the field (Carpenter, 2016). This was important to me as it was a signifier of my individual growth in the profession.

I also tried to look at any value I offered the agency to assess my impact. Going in, I anticipated improving my observation skills to learn more than what was being said. I also anticipated improving my critical thinking skills while still being guided by the organizational policies of the agency.

Based on that, my evaluation was mostly positive with the answers ranging between 4’s and 5’s. At an individual level, I learned how to better customize treatment plans to fit the needs of a client. For group and family dynamics, a strength-based approach proved to be the best, but all these had to be done within the framework of ethics as dictated by NASW as well as organizational policies of A New Vision for You.

Therefore, the need to be one with the agency as well as other stakeholders in the profession, acted as a great learning resource. Open communication channels enabled me to interact with as many people and learn from them all. Lastly, I saw the role community plays in the treatment of a patient and how to use the community as a tool for the well-being of a client (Samson, 2016).

The main take away from my evaluation led me to the core of social work whereby the client needs to come first. As a result, one has to learn past their biases and work with other people as well, to ensure that the client’s needs are being met. Communication is at the very center of it all and communication skills are paramount for every social worker.

Earlier in the quarter, we put a learning agreement in place in order to ensure that we were all getting the best possible experience in field and learning the proper skills that will aid us in being successful upon the completion of this program. For me, a majority of my goals in my learning agreement focused on my documentation, as well as my interaction with clients. I am pleased to say that I have succeeded in reaching most of these goals in my learning agreement. I have been able to interact with clients – mainly with groups as I often interact with clients during the intensive outpatient recovery groups, both the mixed group and the all-female empowerment group. I have also interacted with clients in the parent mentoring group, which has been beneficial for me as well. More recently, I have been able to interact on a more individual level with the clients and work on some assessments relating to the substance abuse clients, as well as for the summer mentoring program.

For the most part, there are a few areas in both learning agreements and the evaluation that still have room for improvement. For example, areas regarding research are places that may be touched on next quarter, as we have not reached that area yet in field. Other areas of improvement include my interaction with clients. While this quarter has more about light interaction and co-facilitation, next quarter will be more hands on and with solo facilitation of the recovery groups on certain day so of the week. For the most part, my overall field experience has been positive, and I have had nothing but positive interactions with all staff – from administrators to direct service professionals. My midterm evaluation is encouraging. However, as social work involves a lifetime of learning, there is always room for improvement in all areas. Overall, my field instructor has been very encouraging, and has explained that most areas I am competent in and that we will continue to work more as time goes on.

“Since the beginning of the new millennium, the world has been experiencing profound change and uncertainty (Pomeroy & Nonaka, 2011).” This has not changed throughout the era or social norm we reside. With any amount of change, uncertainty will always be accompanied. The agency learning agreement is a good representation of the amount of change that is unknown or uncertain. I say this because we complete the agreement by utilizing our own perspectives and opinions about what can be given and how we will handle what is to come. This applies within the internship as well because the journey is not over and there are still many things to come and many things that are unknown. While working within the agencies, there may have been unknown, unplanned, or unexpected situations that could arise. This could be from changes in client dynamics, social workers transferring case load, or increase/decrease in client participation. It is how we as social workers adapt to the change and uncertainty that determine and help shape how we will be able to work within the mental health field. Our completed evaluations give a perspective on how we demonstrate to those in professional field how we utilize our skills and adapt to the changes that our clients bring. Also, how we create effective change and address the uncertainty of the clients. It is how we demonstrate our ability to think out of the box. Thinking outside the box requires letting go, maintaining an open mind, and embracing the unknown (Pomeroy & Nonaka, 2011).”

The evaluation given by my field supervisor was better than I could have hoped. My last field supervisor judged my work not on how I preformed but how she would. That did not help my morale and created uncertainty in my ability as a social worker. However, this supervisor is encouraging and supportive with feedback regarding client services. To quote my response from the evaluation review, “This evaluation was a great review to encourage continuation of services where I demonstrate client/social worker professionalism. I am also glad to be informed of areas to improve my clinical practices such as utilizing more evaluation data to advocate for initiatives.” Moving forward, I hope to continue to work hard for my clients and to represent myself as a social worker despite the unknown of what could happen within the day-to-day.

Our reading for next class discusses Free Speech and its Limits.  John Stuart Mill argues that every opinion, no matter how good or bad, or even disgusting or terrible, should be allowed to be freely expressed.

His reasons are these:

First, he says that ideas and views which are unpopular might just end up being true once we really analyze them carefully.  We would lose the value of those truths if we were to suppress those opinions.

Second, he goes further and argues that even views which are wrong might contain SOME truth, so we should not suppress them.

Third, he goes further still and argues that even if a view were totally wrong and contained no truth whatsoever, it still should not be suppressed because it would take away the need for us to understand and argue for the correct opinion.  If we never had to argue for correct opinions, those correct opinions would lose their vitality and we would not understand them well or be able to defend them, or even know why we hold them.

For all these reasons John Stuart Mill says that ALL opinions should be allowed to be freely expressed.  We should not suppress any opinions.

Our forum question for the week is this:

  • Do you agree with John Stuart Mill?
  • Please explain why you either DO or DO NOT agree with him.
  • Please use examples if you can think of any.

Contract Assignment

You have been entrusted with the task of writing contracts with stakeholders of a medical referral website.

Some of the salient features of this website include: 1. Helps doctors find specialists (for any medical condition) in any geographical region. These specialists are nominated by other doctors or could be self-nominated. 2. The patients’ records are kept online for all concerned doctors to view. 3. The referral mechanism can be initiated by any of the doctors who are registered with the site. You may register as a generalist (Family Practice etc). 4. There is a message board associated with the site that can be accessed by the general public. This message board may contain information rating the specialists. 5. The referring doctor has to get the patient approval prior to using the site on their behalf. 6. The site has doctors from every region of the world. However, the search can be localized to a particular region (miles from a zip code, state/province, groups of states/provinces, country, group of countries.) 7. It also contains insurance and other medical cost related information about each doctor. The concerned doctor provides this information. 8. Finally, many High Schools in the US are participating in this web-site. The health counselors can create accounts for their student-patients. 9. This site is sponsored by a consortium of pharmaceutical companies. They may advertise their products and seek information for clinical trials through this site. In order to complete this task, you will first identify all the stakeholders that may require contract. You may write down reasonable assumption OR ask for more specific details (Yes/No answers only 🙂 ) from the instructor. Finally, Write all stakeholders, you may write down 5 important aspects of the contract with them. Based on your contract, describe some design issues (constraints/ restrictions) for the website designer. 1.
