Assignment 1 and Assignment 2

Assignment 1

The LGBTQ community continues to experience incidences of prejudice and bias. Not only are these prejudices exemplified in interpersonal interactions through slurs and violent acts but also in the policies maintained in social work agencies and institutions. On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court extended marriage rights to same-sex partners. Since this ruling, the federal government has extended all federal and military/veteran benefits to married same-sex couples. Despite this progress, states continue to debate laws and policies that would legalize forms of discrimination toward LGBTQ individuals. Advocacy organizations, such as the Human Rights Campaign, provide policy maps showing the different rights provided in different states (see http://www.hrc.org/state_maps). Social workers are expected to fight to eliminate these inequalities throughout communities, programs, and institutions.

Human Rights Campaign

To prepare: Consider the following statement:

NASW encourages the adoption of laws that recognize inheritance, insurance, same-sex marriage, child custody, property, and other rights in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender relationships. The Association firmly believes that all federal protections and responsibilities available to legally married people in the United States should be available to people who enter same sex unions (including domestic partnerships, civil unions, and same sex marriages).

By Day 5 of Week 7

Submit your reaction to this statement of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Describe what you think is the role of social workers in equal rights and access to LGBTQ populations.

Assignment 2

world, members of the LGBTQ community continue to struggle for their rights. In some countries, they have made some progress. In 2016, 20 countries legally recognized marriage for same-sex couples (Human Rights Campaign, 2016). However, in other countries, the LGBTQ community faces much greater obstacles, and the consequences of fighting for basic rights are grave for both LGBTQ individuals and allies. Being gay is a crime punishable by death in 10 countries and is illegal in a total of 73 countries (Human Rights Campaign, 2016). Because of the violence and social exclusion experienced globally, LGBTQ individuals may seek refugee status because of their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression (UN High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR], 2016).

To prepare: Read the United Nations Address on Global LGBT Rights by Hilary Clinton (chapter 85 in text).

By Day 7 of Week 7

Submit a detailed explanation of your reaction to this essay. Then, explain why, in the context of practicing social work in North America, it is important for us to acknowledge and address sexual orientation and gender diversity of marginalized populations across the world. Explain the role of social workers on an international level in relation to the rights of the LGBTQ community. Identify specific skills and actions you would employ as an advocate.

Assignment: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing (GRADED)

While you take a break from your essay as it “incubates,” let’s learn some ways to effectively integrate sources into your writing so that you will be ready to confidently place them in your paper when the time comes.

Complete the THREE activities on this page to review your understanding of quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing.

NOTE: Your answers for Activity 3: Summarizing Assignment will be submitted for a grade.

Activity 1: Quoting

Quotations* are exact phrases taken directly from the source material. They are denoted by quotation marks that enclose the specific borrowed phrase.

Click on the question mark icon below to complete the activity.

Assessment 4: Spreadsheet Budget Nursing

Assessment 4

MUST GET DIDTINGUISHED IN SLL CATEGORIES OR EDIT

Cost Savings Analysis

  • Overview; Prepare a spreadsheet of cost savings data showing efficiency gains attributable to care coordination over the course of one fiscal year, and report your key findings in an executive summary, 4–5 pages in length. Information plays a fundamental role in health care. Providers such as physicians and hospitals create and process information as they deliver care to patients. However, managing that information and using it productively poses an ongoing challenge, particularly in light of the complexity of the U.S. health care sector, with its many diverse settings for care and types of providers and services. Health information technology (HIT) has the potential to considerably increase the productivity of the health sector by assisting providers in managing information. Furthermore, HIT can improve the quality of health care and, ultimately, the outcomes of that care for patients.
  • The use of HIT has been upheld as having remarkable promise in improving the efficiency, quality, cost-effectiveness, and safety of medical care delivery in our nation’s health care system. This assessment provides an opportunity for you to examine how utilizing HIT can positively affect the financial health of an organization, improve patient health, and create better health outcomes. By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
    • Competency 1: Apply care coordination models to improve the patient experience, promote population health, and reduce costs.
      • Describe ways in which care coordination can generate cost savings.
    • Competency 2: Explain the relationship between care coordination and evidence-based data.
      • Describe ways in which care coordination efforts can enhance the collection of evidence-based data and improve quality through the application of an emerging health care model.
    • Competency 3: Use health information technology to guide care coordination and organizational practice.
      • Explain how care coordination can promote improved health consumerism and effect positive health outcomes.
    • Competency 4: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable organizational, professional, and scholarly standards.
      • Present cost savings data and information clearly and accurately.
      • Support main points, claims, and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.
    • Competency Map CHECK YOUR PROGRESSUse this online tool to track your performance and progress through your course.
    • APA Module.
    • Academic Honesty & APA Style and Formatting.
    • APA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX].
    • Capella Resources
    • ePortfolio.
    • Research Resources You may use other resources of your choice to prepare for this assessment; however, you will need to ensure that they are appropriate, credible, and valid. The MSN-FP6612: Emerging Health Care Models and Care Coordination Library Guide can help direct your research. The Supplemental Resources and Research Resources, both linked from the navigation menu in your courseroom, provide additional resources to help support you. As you review these resources, you may want to consider the following questions:
    • What is the main focus of information gathering in health care?
    • How can care coordination efforts enhance the collection of evidence-based data and improve quality?
    • What governmental entities are leading care coordination practices?
    • What influence does data analysis have on the development and advancement of health care policy?

  • Asssessment Instructions

  • Preparation As the senior care coordinator in your organization, your manager has asked you to examine and report on how care coordination can generate cost savings, improve outcomes, enhance the collection of evidence-based data, and improve health care quality for the community. She would like you to compile cost savings data in a well-organized spreadsheet and present your key findings in an executive summary. Note:Remember that you can submit all or a portion of your draft spreadsheet and executive summary to Smarthinking for feedback before you submit the final version of this assessment. If you plan on using this free service, be mindful of the turnaround time of 24–48 hours for receiving feedback. Requirements Determine how care coordination can reduce costs. Compile your cost savings data in a spreadsheet, using Microsoft Excel or a suitable application of your choice. (If you elect to use an application other than Excel, check with faculty to avoid potential file compatibility issues.) Your spreadsheet should containat least fourcost-saving elements. Identify the cost-saving element, current costs, and anticipated savings. Then create an executive summary using theAPA Style Paper Template [DOCX]. Discuss your cost-saving elements and report key findings from your analysis. Analyzing Cost Savings The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your analysis addresses each point, at a minimum. You may also want to read the Cost Savings Analysis Scoring Guide to better understand how each criterion will be assessed.
    • Describe ways in which care coordination can generate cost savings.
      • What are your primary evidence-based sources of information?
      • Are your conclusions substantiated by the data?
      • What assumptions, if any, underlie your analysis?
    • Explain how care coordination can promote improved health consumerism and effect positive health outcomes.
      • What evidence do you have to substantiate your claims?
    • Describe at least five ways in which care coordination efforts can enhance the collection of evidence-based data and improve quality through the application of an emerging health care model.
      • Choose any emerging health care model.
    • Present cost savings data and information clearly and accurately.
    • Support main points, claims, and conclusions with relevant and credible evidence, correctly formatting citations and references using APA style.
    • Additional Requirements Executive Summary Format and Length Format your executive summary using APA style:
    • Use theAPA Style Paper Template [DOCX]provided. Be sure to include:
      • A title page and references page. An abstract is not required.
      • A running head on all pages.
      • Appropriate section headings.
    • See also theAPA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX]to help you in writing and formatting your executive summary.
    • Your summary should be 4–5 pages in length, not includingthe title page and references page.
    • Supporting Evidence
    • Cite 4–5 sources of relevant and credible scholarly or professional evidence to support your cost savings analysis.
    • Apply APA formatting to all in-text citations and references.
    • Submit both your spreadsheet and your executive summary. Portfolio Prompt: You may choose to save your spreadsheet and executive summary to your ePortfolio.

Modern History Essay

During the two decades following WWII, significant political, social and  economic developments took place within the United States.   The global  triumph against virulent racism associated with the fascist Axis  Alliance along with the liberation of colonial regimes, most  particularly within Africa, highlighted the blatant prejudice inherent  in racial segregation.  Due to military service abroad, many members of  the armed forces were cognizant of the disparity between American ideals  and reality as the nation became absorbed with the pent up desire to  improve individual’s quality of life.  While prosperity increased for  most Americans, subsequent evidence revealed many residents did not  share in the affluent society.    Racial and ethnic prejudice remained  acutely visible.  As a tragic consequence of the virulent McCarthyism  spectacle, citizens who overtly criticized fundamental inequality were  viewed with profound suspicion.  The Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v  Board of Education forced apathetic Americans to confront the horrifying  edifice of institutional discrimination.   With extensive media  attention, a persistent civil disobedience campaign was coordinated by  Dr. Martin Luther King’s Southern Leadership Conference.   As the scope  of public protest expanded, it led to the enactment of legislation  during the early 1960s that was designed to fundamentally eradicate the  political vestiges of racial discrimination and broaden opportunities  for women, veterans and people with disabilities.

Explain the  achievements and controversies of domestic conditions within the United  States during this time frame and analyze the circumstances that allowed  complacency to block meaningful progress to resolve these conditions  for so long.

Reading with the grain

  1. What type of document is this? Is it a diary?  A government document? A memoir? A document of a particular organization (what then is the purpose of the organization? Political? Religious? Etc.)?   How does the type of document impact it’s message?
  2. Who is the author? What can we find out about the author?  Or must we infer information about the author from their writing?  If so, what can we infer?
  3. How was the author involved in the events described in the document? How might that affect their interpretation of events?
  4. When was the document produced? Was it during the event?  Or at a later date?  How might that affect what is said in the document?
  5. Who was the intended audience? Was the document written to persuade a particular person or group to an action?  Was the document written to be public? Or private?
  6. Look carefully at the language being used (terms, ideas, images, point of view) to help identify the author’s viewpoint.

Reading against the grain

  1. What might be the author’s biases? How can we see bias?  Does the language in the document indicate bias?  Or does it indicate a particular viewpoint?
  2. Whose voice is silenced in this document? What and who are not mentioned, or if they are mentioned but then ignored? How might they interpret the events in the document differently?
  3. Are there contradictions in the document?
  4. What is the cultural stance of the author?  How do they present their culture versus others?
  5. What are the limits of the information in the text?  What do these limits suggest? [out of space? Ignorance of a topic?  Disregard for particular people/places? Etc]

Ethics In Accounting

Scenario:

Imagine you are the assistant controller in charge of general ledger accounting at Linbarger Company. Your company has a large loan from an insurance company. The loan agreement requires that the company’s cash account balance be maintained at $200,000 or more, as reported monthly. At June 30, the cash balance is $80,000. You give this update to Lisa Infante, the financial vice president. Lisa is nervous and instructs you to keep the cash receipts book open for one additional day for purposes of the June 30 report to the insurance company. Lisa says, “If we don’t get that cash balance over $200,000, we’ll default on our loan agreement. They could close us down, put us all out of our jobs!” Lisa continues, “I talked to Oconto Distributors (one of Linbarger’s largest customers) this morning. They said they sent us a check for $150,000 yesterday. We should receive it tomorrow. If we include just that one check in our cash balance, we’ll be in the clear. It’s in the mail!”

Questions

  1. What is the accounting problem that the Linbarger Company faces?
  2. What are the ethical considerations in this case? Provide rationale for why these are ethical considerations.
  3. What are the negative impacts that can happen if you do not follow Lisa Infante’s instructions to wait one more day to post the balance?
  4. Who will be negatively impacted if you do comply? Provide a rationale for why these individuals will be impacted.
  5. What is one alternative that you could pursue in this scenario? Support your recommendations with information you learned in this class.

Engl short assignment 2 Tropes

For this assignment, we are going to think and write about tropes in horror films, specifically those found in zombie horror. The primary purpose of the assignment is to help you begin to do the analytical work of examining specific scenes, and noting their characteristics. In order to complete the assignment, you’ll have to look back over scenes in Night of the Living Dead  and fit them into a broader framework of knowledge. That framework of knowledge in this assignment is called the “trope.” A trope is a convention that occurs more than once in a given genre of study. For instance, in more than one romantic comedy, there is a final scene in which one lover rushes onto a plane at the last minute to convince the other lover to stay. This scene, or some variation on it, is almost something we anticipate when we watch a romantic comedy. In a sports movie, there is often a scene in which the worst athlete on the team–someone nobody expects to contribute–suddenly comes alive and scores the final basket/touchdown/home run. You get the idea: there are certain conventions in films that we almost come to expect to see. These are tropes.

I have attached a link here to a website that creates and archives a long list of tropes from an number of genres. Many of these are tropes that people have accepted to be common in horror, although the list is very long and some of the tropes are rather obscure–items you’re probably only going to find linked on this list. I’ve linked you directly to the page on horror tropes, and this is the page you’ll be working with: The link is here. (Links to an external site.) Read over as many of these tropes as you can, although I know it’s a long list and you may not be able to read them all, all the way through. As you read, pick at least three tropes that you think occur in George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. (A Note: Just so you don’t get stuck in one letter of the alphabet, please make sure that the name of each trope starts with a different letter of the alphabet. This will ensure a bit of coverage.)

Once you have at least three tropes from the list that you remember occurring in the film, write a paragraph for each trope, describing what it is, where it occurs in the film,  and what it does for the film (Be specific, noting the time marker at the bottom of the video for the occurrence of each trope, so that I can check it). What is the purpose it is serving? In what way does it make the film scarier? Beyond just being scary, is there anything the trope contributes to the film? (Obviously you don’t have to answer all these questions for each trope, but if you’re having trouble, the questions are there to help you focus your writing).

Nuts and Bolts: Three paragraphs, typed, uploaded as a word document. MLA formatted, 700 words. Remember to cite the specific trope you are referring to from the linked list and to cite the specific time in the film when the trope occurs. Type and save your assignment as a word document. Then, upload the document following the prompts. Do not upload the document in a different format, or I won’t be able to see it, and I will give it a zero until you upload it properly, following the instructions given here.

Presentation Assignment – Revised (November 16, 2020)

Description

Presentation Assignment – Revised (November 16, 2020)

Your assignment is to write a report on how a specific idea or kind of technology developed over time. Your topic must relate to cross-cultural exchange and change over time by studying its use across two world regions (or cultures). The report may include images or diagrams where necessary and must use the following three-part format:

Part 1: 300-500 words that describe your topic, the time period you are studying, and location. Also, talk give a general summary of how it changed the society that it originated in.

Part 2: 250-300 words: compare how the idea or technology you are researching was used across at least two cultures or world regions after its invention or discovery.

Part 3: 250-500 words: how is this idea/technology used today? Discuss some applications and review how they are different (or same) than in the earlier history you reviewed above.

Referring to class lectures or readings as sources is not necessary. However, you will have to use at least one independent scholarly source (a research article, an academic website, or work). Include a bibliography to cite your sources at the end of your report. You may use the citation style of your choice (APA/Chicago/Harvard…).

Here are some of many possible topics to consider for your report…

Technology: writing (cuneiform, paper, printing); weaponry/warfare (bow, composite bow, cross-bow, gunpowder etc..), navigation (compass, astrolab); transportation (wheel, cart, train); cosmetics (kohl, lipstick); fashion (high-heel shoes)

Ideas: politics (democracy, anarchy, sovereignty, sacred kingship); law (legal codes, rule of law, punishment); religion (monotheism, polytheism, animism, ancestor worship); philosophy (Confucianism, natural law, humanism)
