Differential Analysis

Please describe the circumstances of the following case study and recommend a course of action. Explain your approach to the problem, perform relevant calculations and analysis, and formulate a recommendation. Ensure your work and recommendation are thoroughly supported.

Case Study:

A vacuum manufacturer has prepared the following cost data for manufacturing one of its engine components based on the annual production of 50,000 units.

DescriptionCost per MonthDirect Materials   $75,000Direct Labor$100,000Total$175,000

In addition, variable factory overhead is applied at $7.50 per unit. Fixed factory overhead is applied at 150% of direct labor cost per unit. The vacuums sell for $150 each. A third party has offered to make the engines for $60 per unit. 75% of fixed factory overhead, which represents executive salaries, rent, depreciation, and taxes, continue regardless of the decision. Should the company make or buy the engines?

Superior papers will:

  • Perform all calculations correctly.
  • Articulate the approach to solving the problem, including which financial information is relevant and not relevant.
  • Correctly conclude on whether the company should make or buy the engines.

Propose other factors that should be considered when making this decision and elaborate on whether or not those factors do or do not support the decision.

Assignment 2: The Need for Wireless Standards and Protocols

Due Week 4 and worth 100 points

The networking field, to include wireless networking, defines many standards to govern network and wireless network operations. It is important to become familiar with the standards organizations and their current standards, standards that are currently being revised, and new standards being considered.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Select one (1) national standards organization and one (1) international standards organization that impacts wireless technologies. Describe the impact that each standards organization has in wireless technologies on the planning and development of corporate networks.
  2. Assess the breadth of the standards provided by each of the previously chosen organizations (national and international) and address where advancements or enhancements are needed.
  3. Select one (1) formal and one (1) de facto wireless standard. Assess the relative importance of that standard and address if the standard will remain stable, if there are enhancements that are currently needed, or if the standard will soon become obsolete.
  4. Use at least four (4) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Discuss the role of standards in wireless networks.
  • Analyze the network protocols and security mechanisms in wireless networks.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in wireless networks.
  • Write clearly and concisely about wireless computing topics using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.

Deliverable 2 – How Do I Become the Leader I Want to Be?

Competency

This competency will allow you to analyze leadership styles and behaviors and apply them to a personal and/or professional life experiences.

Student Success Criteria

View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

Instructions

Leadership is either formal or informal, and it is important to discover which one is a better fit for you as you grow in your career. Your company leaders are asking you to identify a specific leadership role that you would someday like to fill (e.g., Supervisor, Manager, Vice President, Individual Contributor, etc.). Once you have determined the type of leader you would like to become, create an action plan for your career to achieve such a position.

  • In order to successfully determine the type of leader you want to become, answer the following questions in one to two pages:
  • Would you describe yourself as a formal or informal leader (and explain traits you possess that would make you a successful formal or informal leader)?
  • What are some skills you should develop and tactics you should use to be an effective leader?
  • Create a one-page action plan that addresses the following questions:
  • Who will you work with as a mentor (just identify the position of a potential mentor) to help you grow into this leadership position and why?
  • What steps will you take to become the type of leader you want to be in your career and how will you achieve your action plan?

Critical Thinking Writing Problem

Problem: A Tennessee automobile manufacturer has 20 containers (40’ steel boxes with a max gross weight of about 40,000 pounds) on a container ship that can carry 5,000 40’ containers of parts from suppliers approaching the western coast of Canada, inbound from China. Canadian National Railway (CNRR) workers are threatening a strike. If the workers strike while the load is inbound from Vancouver, the shipments of car parts could be delayed, potentially shutting down the manufacturing line. Based on your assessment of the costs for each alternative, what do you recommend to management?

Additional information: It takes 20 of these containers per day to maintain operations. There are container ships leaving the port of Shenzhen daily carrying 20 containers of parts along with their full load of containers for other customers.

Options:

Continue to Prince Rupert, BC, hoping that the strike will be settled before you shut the plant down. The cost of a shutdown is $12,000,000 per day.

Divert to Vancouver, BC, for an additional cost of $100,000. If there is a strike, truck the parts to Seattle and on to Nashville via Burlington Northern – Santa Fe (BNSF), with an additional cost of $300 per 40’ container. There is still a possibility of getting caught by the strike and shutting the plant down, but it is no more than 30% of the probability of the shutdown described in alternative 1. (If you are shut down, the cost is the same, but the probability is less because you aren’t traveling on CNRR as far.)

Divert to Long Beach, CA, for an additional $750,000 and on to Nashville via Union Pacific (UP), with additional costs amounting to $700 per 40’ container. You could still get shut down for a couple of days if the strike occurs right away because this route is longer and will take more time. (Product already on CNRR could be held up causing a brief shutdown before containers arrive via UP.)  Assume that this probability is no more than 15% of the probability described in alternative 1.

Actions:

1. Analyze each option. At what level of strike likelihood would you recommend each option?

2. Graph the costs for each option (for the entire shipment (20) 40’ containers) as a function of the likelihood of a CNRR strike. Make sure the graph is scaled appropriately to help make the decision points visible.

3. Write an executive summary no longer than 2 pages, reviewing the problem, showing the cost of alternatives, and making a recommendation. Justify your recommendation.

Scenario (Hint 1):

You walk up to Dave’s door. He is facing you, but intent on some work on his laptop.  You clear your throat and Dave glances us, his face still pointed at the laptop. “Got that report for Lillian finished?”

“I have no idea how to start.”

Dave sits up and turns to you. “Well, it’s a total cost problem, right? Calculate fixed costs and variable costs for each alternative.”

“But the quantity is constant,” you protest.

“Right, so the per container cost is a fixed cost, based on the number of 40’ containers we ordered. Your variable cost is the probability of a strike.”

Still unsure, you persist, “But what is the probability?”

Dave shrugs, “Who knows? Maybe it’s a coin toss. Maybe its lower than that. Just plot your total cost lines for probabilities from zero to one hundred percent (0.0 to 1.0) and see what it looks like. When you plotted crossover or break-even point to choose between alternatives you had to create a scale of quantity. In this situation you are creating a scale of probability. If you need to focus on just a part of the range of probabilities, then adjust your range. Makes no sense to plot from zero to a hundred if your crossover points all occur in the first ten percent or so. We want to give Lillian the information she needs to make the final decision, both in the form of data and graphs, but also with a reasoned recommendation of our own.”

“What if the strike lasts longer than one day?”

Dave turns his eyes back to his work. “We will NOT be shut down longer than one day. We’ll air freight parts  in before that happens. Are you up to this?” *

“I’ll get it. Thanks.” There is no risk of a shutdown.

* For true emergencies, Boeing 777’s could be chartered from Shenzhen, China to Nashville, TN, each carrying about 5 containers worth of parts. Charter costs are $20,000 per hour per plane, (including refueling time) plus about $500,000 in emergency loading and freight internal to the port of Shenzhen. It takes 21 hours, more or less, for the trip from Shenzhen to Nashville, including refueling time. The result is that we will NOT be shut down more than one day. However, this is an expensive alternative.

Hint 2: Executive summaries include:

• Header: Include author’s name, addressee’s name, subject and date in a header. (You will be asked to write a number of executive summaries. Your particular company may have formats to follow, but if not, follow this one.)

• Background: This should be brief and should be from the viewpoint of company insiders. (Don’t tell me that we are an auto company. We know that.)

• Analysis: Here is where your data, graphs, or tables go along with some explanation of what we see.

• Recommendations: Make recommendations and short explanations of why. Act as if these are real dollars. I find it helpful to put costs in terms of my annual salary. If I can save, say, twice my annual salary, then the company can hardly afford to lay me off.

Public Policy – Housing stability

Public Policy – Housing Stability

Before anyone had heard of COVID-19, Texas already had a housing affordability problem. The cost of housing has risen steady over the past three decades while wages for low-skill and unskilled workers have been largely stagnant. When the coronavirus pandemic derailed the economy in March, 2020, many Texans found themselves out of work, especially service workers in nail salons, restaurants, bars, hotels and other “non-essential” businesses that were forced to close or greatly cut back on their operations. Many Texans, living paycheck-to-paycheck already, quickly found themselves unable to pay rent.

The Texas Supreme Court quickly imposed a moratorium on residential evictions through the end of May. Congress passed the CARES Act, which suspended evictions on “covered properties” through the end of July, and made the process more lengthy after the end of the moratorium. Local cities and counties created various rental assistance programs, the funding for which was exhausted as quickly as each program could open for applications.

Now, Texas is looking at a resumption of evictions, even as many Texans are unemployed and unemployment compensation is running out. At the same time, housing providers are struggling to pay their bills and keep utilities turned on at thousands of apartment properties, even with many residents not paying rent. As if this weren’t enough, the downturn in the energy industry may last far longer than the virus, and cause further economic problems that impact the job and housing markets.

In June, Houston and Harris County appointed a Housing Stability Task Force (Links to an external site.) to make policy recommendations, which began meeting a few weeks before this class started.

For this assignment, write our standard 2 – 5 page essay (this will probably need more than 2 pages…) as if you were serving on the Housing Policy Task Force. What would you recommend and why? If your recommendation costs money, make sure your recommendation includes a source for the funding.

Submit in Word. Cite your sources. Add your bill tracking update.

Week 1 DB Response

Personality is something that individuals are inclined to consider significantly. When people meet new individuals, whether at work, school, or social events, it is often their personality which they instantly center on. Assessing if they are polite, accommodating, sociable, or timid are a few of the aspects people evaluate (Cervone & Pervin, 2019). This discussion discusses the factors that significantly influence personality development and the least aspects that influence an individual’s personality. It is an individual’s personality that makes them who they are.

According to Cervone and Pervin (2019), the three factors that significantly influence personality development include heredity, surroundings, and circumstances. Heredity refers to the influences with which people are born with. They are an individual’s genes, and it is impossible to change these traits. Heredity often includes temperament, which assists in determining how a person reacts and how easygoing they are (Smederevac et al., 2020). Genetics also has more sway than parents in determining an individual’s personality.

Moreover, the widely unrecognized environmental influences, described as the “nonshared environmental effects,” are also considered to impact personality profoundly.  Finally, are the circumstances. Situations are the encounters that people experience. They may include trauma, divorce, death, and happy moments (Cervone & Beck, 2020). All these circumstances have a significant role in developing an individual’s personality.

The factor that has a lesser impact on how a human’s personality develops is culture. Although some studies may argue that culture is significant in shaping personality, in the 21st century, people tend to learn new cultures; thus, they can change from their original cultural practices to modern forms. According to Cervone and Beck (2020), culture is associated with a shared system of beliefs, attitudes, attributes, values, professions, and customs that define a group characteristic.

Generally, the main influences of personality development are heredity, circumstances, and environment. On the other hand, culture least influences personality but is also essential in personality growth.

CM220M1-1: Articulate what constitutes effective persuasive communication in personal, professional and academic contexts

 https://www.ted.com/talks/steven_johnson_where_good_ideas_come_from?language=en  (Link needed)

This competency assessment assesses the following Outcome(s):

CM220M1-1: Articulate what constitutes effective persuasive communication in personal, professional and academic contexts.

PC1.1: Engage in a team setting with professional integrity and respect.

In this Competency Assessment, you will write four paragraphs describing effective persuasive communication in personal, professional, and academic contexts. No matter the context, you need to choose the most appropriate audience, method of communication, and evidence to convey your argument and persuade others to agree with you.

In each of the first three paragraphs, include at least one concrete example of effective persuasion that you have experienced or produced yourself to illustrate your points. Describe that example, identify the parts of the rhetorical situation (audience, speaker, text, purpose, and context), and offer specific reasons why the example was effective based on the concepts covered in the Module 1 reading. You can also include information on tone, style, formality, voice, correctness, evidence, and word choice as you develop your analysis. The fourth paragraph will focus on the relationship between teamwork and persuasion.

  • In the first paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in personal contexts such as social media posts, emails to friends, or communications to your child’s teachers and explain the considerations you must keep in mind to communicate effectively in these personal communications.
  • In the second paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in professional contexts. You can consider your own field of study and the expectations for writing effectively in that field and explain how that communication example illustrates the expectations for professional persuasive communication, or you could describe a communication you received in a professional context, such as a letter from a lawyer or business.
  • In the third paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in an academic context like a discussion board, assignment, or group presentation. In this paragraph, consider how academic persuasive standards differ from personal and professional writing.
  • Finally, you will often need to work as part of a team in academic and professional contexts. In the fourth paragraph, discuss how you could use collaboration and teamwork, including the strategies described by Steven Johnson in his TED Talk “Where Good Ideas Come From,” to persuade others and communicate ideas effectively and ethically to others.

Follow APA formatting guidelines for the document. Paragraphs should be well-developed (use the “point, illustrate, explain” method), cohesive, and edited for clarity and correctness. Cite any sources used in APA style, including the module reading.

Use the following chart to help ensure that you meet the following expectations in the final version of your competency assessment:

Paragraph 1

● Describe an example of persuasive communication in a personal context. This could be a social media post, an email to a friend, or even a conversation.

● Identify the parts of the rhetorical situation.

● Analyze what makes this example effective.

● Draw connections to concepts from the Module 1 reading.

Paragraph 2

● Describe an example of persuasive communication in a professional context. This could be a memo, email, or presentation.

● Identify the parts of the rhetorical situation.

● Analyze what makes this example effective and consider the expectations for professional communication in your field.

● Draw connections to concepts from the Module 1 reading.

Paragraph 3

● Describe an example of persuasive communication in an academic context. This could be an essay you wrote for a class, an article you read, or a discussion post.

● Identify the parts of the rhetorical situation.

● Analyze what makes this example effective and consider how academic persuasion differs from other contexts.

● Draw connections to concepts from the Module 1 reading.

Paragraph 4

● Discuss how you could use collaboration and teamwork to persuade others and communication ideas effectively and ethically.

● Draw connections to Steven Johnson’s TED Talk and the theories of rhetoric covered in the Module 1 reading.

References

● Since you will reference concepts from the Module 1 Reading or may draw ideas from the PG Writing Center, include signal phrases and citations, like this: According to the PG Writing Center, persuasive writing should. . .

● include a References page with citations for the reading and any other sources you use.

Please Resubmit

Elizabeth,

Thank you for your work here. The assignment called for four body paragraphs where you discuss the following ideas:

  • Persuasive writing in personal contexts
  • Persuasive writing in professional contexts
  • Persuasive writing in academic contexts
  • How collaboration and teamwork is essential–particularly to you and your major/career field.

I see you covering some of these ideas. You’ll note lots of bubble comments in your document, and I encourage you to review these. In particular, try following the PIE method:

  • Point (or topic sentence)
    • Why is persuasion important in this area (personal/professional/academic)? Then, what characteristics are important to make persuasion in this area important?
  • Illustrate it. In other words, bring in your experience.
  • Explain it. Or, in this case, connect the principles of successful persuasive writing in that context to your experience. Connect the dots. i.e. “This shows …” or “My experience demonstrates how …” and tie back to the characteristics that make this type important and effective.

However, there is a great deal of room to improve. Please see the comments I placed in the attached rubric for you. I hope these, in conjunction with using the Writing Center, will help you strengthen your writing for future assignments in this module sequence. Please use the Writing Center prior to resubmission!
Reach out if I can help, please!

BUSINESS LAW PAPER NEEDED TONIGHT

  1. landlord-Tenant Law
    Worth 220 points
HINT: See Chapters 29 and 30 of the text to help understand some of the legal issues covered in this assignment.
Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment and has put it on the market to be rented for $800.00 a month. Larry Landlord has been in business for approximately five (5) years and has had both positive and negative experiences with tenants. Larry Landlord is hoping to find a good, long-term tenant for his apartment. Roger Renter saw Larry’s sign for the apartment for rent and thought the location and the apartment would be perfect. Roger met Larry to look at the apartment and Roger fell in love with it. All of the interior fixtures had been replaced and the unit had a nice large closet. Roger noticed that although newly painted, the exterior of the apartment did show a little bit of wear. Because of the condition of the exterior of the building, Roger asked Larry about any roof leaks. Larry stated that he had never had a leak and was not aware of any leaks.
Roger and Larry entered into a valid contract for the rental of the apartment. (Note: The issue of whether or not a contract exists is NOT part of this question. For purposes of this question assume the contract is valid and there are no issues with the contract.)
Roger Renter was very happy in his new location; the apartment was quiet and the neighbors were friendly. Larry Landlord was also very happy because Roger Renter was a model tenant. Roger Renter paid on time and was quiet and respectful to other tenants.
The part of the country where Roger rented was rainy in the summertime. Roger rented and moved into the apartment in October. In June, a tremendous rainstorm occurred and Roger’s roof began to leak. The leak was minor at first and Roger merely put a trash can under the leak and had no other issues that month. When handing over his monthly rent check, Roger told Larry about the small leak. Larry thanked Roger for letting him know about the leak and told Roger he would have it fixed.
The next month the rains came again and the leak grew larger in Roger’s apartment. Roger was not home at the time of the rain and therefore the leak damaged some of Roger’s furniture. Roger called Larry to let him know that there was a leak and asked when it might be fixed. Roger also stated that he thought Larry had fixed the roof. Larry curtly stated, “When it rains, sometimes it pours. When it pours, sometimes it leaks.” Roger did not like Larry’s tone or response and called back to ask when the roof might be fixed. Larry stated, “When I get to it.” The following day, Roger sent Larry a note about the roof leak and asked Larry to please address the issue.
The week before the rent was due, another rainstorm occurred and the leak was even larger. This time the leak damaged Roger’s clothing, furniture, and some precious items he had inherited from family members. Roger called Larry and asked Larry to fix roof immediately. Larry responded in a similar and condescending manner. Roger hung up the phone and threw his baseball bat against the wall, damaging the drywall and knocking out an electrical socket.
Since it was the rainy season, Roger knew it would rain again and therefore simply moved his items away from the leak and did nothing to help mitigate the damage from the leaking roof.
Larry came into the apartment to investigate the leak and found damage from not only the leak but also from the thrown baseball bat. Roger states that the baseball bat damage was a direct result of Larry’s inability to fix the leak based on his anger from Larry’s curt response.
Suppose you are a mediator. In five to seven (5-7) pages discuss the rights and responsibilities of the landlord and the tenant in which you:

    1. Explore the legal rights and responsibilities of the tenant and the landlord.
    2. Decide whether or not the landlord and / or the tenant had a legal duty to mitigate damages.
    3. Determine whether or not Larry has legal grounds to evict Roger. Explain why or why not.
    4. Describe whether or not Roger has a legal obligation to pay for the damage he caused and determine whether or not Larry would be liable for any direct damage.
    5. Support each response with facts presented in the scenario.
    6. Use proper legal terminology throughout your responses.
    7. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.
    8. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
      • Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
      • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
      • Include a reference page. Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.

ART100- Discussion 3

W2: Discussion Post 3 – Discussion Group 1

Chapter 15 explores prehistory, ancient Mesopotamia, and ancient Egypt. For this discussion, you’ll pick a work from one of these regions/cultures to learn more about.

  1. Select from the Smarthistory website one work of art from either ancient Egypt, the prehistoric period, or Bronze Age Mesopotamia that you’d like to learn more about. Use the links below to access the works.
  1. In 250 words or more describe the artwork and its importance.
    • Some questions to help you include: Why is this piece significant? What does it tell us about this culture and/or time period? Is anything intriguing about its size, medium (material), where it was located, or what it depicts?
  2. Next, include a ‘fun fact’ or something intriguing that you learned as a result of your research.
    • Your post is due by Friday night.
  3. Include in-text citations when you paraphrase or use direct quotes. Please cite your sources in MLA format.
    • Please don’t cut and paste info from the web without using quotes and citing your sources (this is plagiarism) and try to write as much as you can in your own words. It’s more important to hear what you think about these topics, than what other’s have written.
    • At a minimum, you’ll include a properly formatted citation to the Smarthistory page and its link (usually found at the bottom of the page).
    • Need help knowing how to cite and use in-text citations? Check the page in the course orientation on this.
  4. Remember to:
    • Embed your images.
    • Include a title (describe it if there is no ‘formal’ title), the artist if known, the date of the work, the medium, and culture and/or region.
