A Shoe for a Shoe, And a Smile

US-based TOMS Shoes created an out-of-the-box solution to its objective of helping people even while running a for-profit business. The company founded on the principle that it would give away one shoe to a poor child for free, for every shoe it sold. This case study looks at how TOMS Shoes made a cause the center of its activities, even as the cause itself contributed to its revenues and profitability. And how it used social media for marketing.Blake Mycoskie created what can arguably be called a unique business model that combines both for-profit and not-for-profit philosophies. A native of Texas in the US and a serial entrepreneur, Mycoskie was travelling in Argentina in 2006, when he noticed poor children having to grow up without shoes, and facing a lot of hardship in the process. Deeply moved, Mycoskie returned home and founded TOMS Shoes, a company that made and sold, um, shoes of course. But with a twist. For every pair of TOMS shoes sold, the company would donate one pair to a child in need. This revolutionary concept was called “One for One”, and Mycoskie ensured poor children in different parts of the world got the benefit of its business. What made it work even better is the fact that a buyer, typically a young adult looking for an affordable yet cool pair of shoes, would feel good in the knowledge that his purchase has actually helped a poor child get a much-needed shoe for free. The business model worked perfectly, because the cost of the free shoe was built into the price of the one that is sold, making a seemingly charitable effort also contribute to its profitability. So far, the company’s website states that it has provided more than 35 million pairs of shoes to children in 70 countries across the world, and this includes India as well. As long as people continue to purchase TOMS shoes, children in need will receive a pair in return. The shoes that the company designs and sells are based on the Argentine alpargata design.
In later years, Mycoskie expanded the One for One model to other products as well. In 2011, the company introduced eyewear. It followed a similar principle for eyewear as its shoes, but again with a twist. Instead of donating a pair of glasses for every pair sold, TOMS would use part of the profit from that sale to save or restore the eyesight of a person in developing countries. So far, the company website states, TOMS Eyewear has helped restore sight to more than 275,000 people. Further on, the concept was extended to other product categories as well.Mycoskie followed the same principle for his book as well – Start Something That Matters. The cover of the book states: “With every book you purchase, a new book will be provided to a child in need.”While cause-related marketing is followed by many companies, at TOMS the philanthropic component is critical to the success of the for-profit business. The TOMS business model and its heavy focus on marketing and use of social media is innovative and unique.

Using Social Media to Tell the Story of TOMS

TOMS offers more than a comfortable and trendy pair of shoes. It is about status and a story to tell. Mycoskie realized the power of the TOMS story since the early days of the company and has focused on it ever since.
It’s very clear when you go to the TOMS website, that there is a strong presence of social media links, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram and Google Plus. Also, it has created a blog to share stories and educate others about TOMS’s activities. Mycoskie realized the power of social media, which is less costly in comparison to the traditional advertising and fits better with his business model.
On top of that, many TOMS fans and consumers create their own digital content about their experiences with TOMS products and TOMS initiatives, allowing them to do much of the marketing for the company and spread the story.

The Future of TOMS

TOMS is no longer just a shoe company, it has expanded into other areas using its “One for One” business model. A for-profit business with a philanthropic component. The company is also actively looking for people to help them do this by offering grants to people with like-minded ideas.
It is expanding into many categories, including apparels, accessories and tech as well as expanding geographically. To keep the business model sustainable, it is of paramount importance to keep innovating and designing new products that appeal to worldwide consumers. On top of that, TOMS should closely monitor compliance of its activities and keep the promise of One for One.
TOMS’s success in using social media in spreading its story and reaching a vast audience could be equally risky to its reputation and the whole business model in case of compliance and ethical issues as well as improper management of social media.

Econ- To Stand or Not to Stand

In a scene at the end of The Princess Bride, the hero, Wesley, confronts the evil Prince Humperdinck. This interaction can be modeled as the following game.

Wesley can either be strong or weak, as randomly picked by nature with equal probability. Wesley,knowing if he is strong or weak, can then choose to stand or continue lying on the bed.  The prince observes this decision but does not know Wesley’s type  and chooses to fight or surrender. The prince can beat a weak Wesley (Wesley was “mostly” dead only a few hours earlier) and can really beat up a weakWesley who stays in bed. If a weak Wesley stands and the prince fights, then the base payoffs are 1 for the prince and -1 for Wesley. If Wesley stays in bed, then the prince gets 2 and Wesley still gets -1. If Wesley is weak and the prince surrenders, regardless of whether Wesley has stood or not the base payoffs are 1 for Wesley and 0 for the prince. A strong Wesley, however, will destroy the prince and enjoy doing it should the prince try to fight. It is easier for Wesley to beat the Prince if he stands, though, so in that case he gets a payoff of 3 while the prince gets -2. If Wesley stays in bed and the Prince chooses to fight, the payoffs are 1 for Wesley and -1 for the prince. In the event that the prince chooses not to fight, Wesley gets 2 if he stands and 1 if he stays in bed while in either case the prince gets 0. The final complication to the payoffs is that if Wesley is weak, standing costs him some extra amount c, while it costs a strong Wesley nothing.

a) (5 points) derive the extensive form of the game

b) (10 points) derive a pooling BNE where q= 0.5 represents the prince’s initial belief that Wesley is weak. Be sure to include what are the prince’s beliefs about Wesley’s type if he observes Wesley in bed or observes him standing. Find the range of values for c that makes the belief valid.

c) (10 points) derive a separating BNE for this game as well as the range of c over which it is valid.

Despite making considerable progress in the areas of nursing practice, nursing education, advocacy, policymaking, and expanding the influence of professional nursing organizations and associations, the nursing profession still has areas where the progress and development are not as significant as many professional nurses would like it to be. In particular, there are barriers limiting the progress of Advanced Practice Nursing and the contribution that Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) can make to improving the health care system and access to care. Back in 2011, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2011) published a landmark report called “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”. In this report, IOM (2011) identified several barriers to undermining the ability of APNs to contribute to the health care delivery to the full extent of their training and education. The three of those barriers include (1) federal and state-level regulations limiting nurses’ scope of practice (SOP), including state laws, (2) institutional culture and practice, and (3) outdated reimbursement models (IOM, 2011).

SOP regulations present a considerable barrier to the progress of advanced practice nursing. For example, nearly half of the U.S. states have reduced or restricted SOP. In the states with reduced SOP, APNs do not have the author to engage in at least one element of advanced practice (Martin & Alexander, 2019). In those states, APNs are required to have a collaborative agreement with physicians to provide primary care, diagnose patients, and prescribe treatments including controlled substances. In the states with restricted SOP, APNs practice under supervision, perform delegated tasks or work as a part of the teams managed by the physicians (Martin & Alexander, 2019). In other words, SOP regulations limiting APNs’ professional autonomy and the ability to practice independently to the full extent of their education and training present a significant barrier to the progress of advanced nursing practice.

As was mentioned earlier, one more barrier is institutional culture and practice. For example, many health care organizations hire APNs that completed programs that equipped them with exceptional skills and educational background necessary to manage complex patients, work in fast-paced settings, perform complex monitoring, develop evidence-based treatment plans, and order and interpret diagnostic studies (Vanderbilt School of Nursing, n.d.). Moreover, many graduates of the MSN programs possess advanced expertise in clinical care, interprofessional collaboration, quality improvement, and organizational leadership (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011). However, APNs may find it challenging to realize their full potential and make a greater contribution to their organizations when the latter have an organizational culture where the role of APNs is viewed as a managing or supervising type of position. Apparently, such organizational culture makes it more challenging for APNs to make a more valuable contribution to improving organizational outcomes.

Finally, an outdated reimbursement model for the services provided by nurses is another barrier slowing down the progress of advanced practice nursing. As Sarzynski & Barry (2019) explain, a revenue stream may need to be developed in order for the APN role to survive in different settings. However, APNs do not receive reimbursement equal to physicians for providing the same services (Sarzynski & Barry, 2019). Further disparities in reimbursement are exacerbated by the fact that ANpss are more likely to practice in rural settings and treat vulnerable populations and Medicaid beneficiaries compared with physicians (Sarzynski & Barry, 2019). Thus, reimbursement issues should be regulated to ensure that APNs can generate adequate revue for their organizations and in independent practice as well. Therefore, regulations limiting nurses’ SOP, organizational culture and practice, and outdated reimbursement models are the three barriers blocking the way to the progress of advanced nursing practice. Addressing these barriers through policy and practice change should be one of the priorities of nurses’ policymaking and policy advocacy efforts.

Assignment Content

  1. Resources: Pastas R Us, Inc. Database & Microsoft Excel®, Wk 1: Descriptive Statistics Analysis Assignment

    Purpose
This assignment is intended to help you learn how to apply statistical methods when analyzing operational data, evaluating the performance of current marketing strategies, and recommending actionable business decisions. This is an opportunity to build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills within the context of data analysis and interpretation. You’ll gain a first-hand understanding of how data analytics supports decision-making and adds value to an organization.

    Scenario:
Pastas R Us, Inc. is a fast-casual restaurant chain specializing in noodle-based dishes, soups, and salads. Since its inception, the business development team has favored opening new restaurants in areas (within a 3-mile radius) that satisfy the following demographic conditions:

    • Median age between 25 – 45 years old
    • Household median income above national average
    • At least 15% college educated adult population
    • Last year, the marketing department rolled out a Loyalty Card strategy to increase sales. Under this program, customers present their Loyalty Card when paying for their orders and receive some free food after making 10 purchases.

The company has collected data from its 74 restaurants to track important variables such as average sales per customer, year-on-year sales growth, sales per sq. ft., Loyalty Card usage as a percentage of sales, and others. A key metric of financial performance in the restaurant industry is annual sales per sq. ft. For example, if a 1200 sq. ft. restaurant recorded $2 million in sales last year, then it sold $1,667 per sq. ft.

Executive management wants to know whether the current expansion criteria can be improved. They want to evaluate the effectiveness of the Loyalty Card marketing strategy and identify feasible, actionable opportunities for improvement. As a member of the analytics department, you’ve been assigned the responsibility of conducting a thorough statistical analysis of the company’s available database to answer executive management’s questions.

      Report:
Write a 750-word statistical report that includes the following sections:

    • Section 1: Scope and descriptive statistics
    • Section 2: Analysis
    • Section 3: Recommendations and Implementation
    • Section 1 – Scope and descriptive statistics
    • State the report’s objective.
    • Discuss the nature of the current database. What variables were analyzed?
    • Summarize your descriptive statistics findings from Excel. Use a table and insert appropriate graphs.
    • Section 2 – Analysis
    • Using Excel, create scatter plots and display the regression equations for the following pairs of variables:
    • “BachDeg%” versus “Sales/SqFt”
    • “MedIncome” versus “Sales/SqFt”
    • “MedAge” versus “Sales/SqFt”
    • “LoyaltyCard(%)” versus “SalesGrowth(%)”
    • In your report, include the scatter plots. For each scatter plot, designate the type of relationship observed (increasing/positive, decreasing/negative, or no relationship) and determine what you can conclude from these relationships.
    • Section 3: Recommendations and implementation
    • Based on your findings above, assess which expansion criteria seem to be more effective.Could any expansion criterion be changed or eliminated? If so, which one and why?
    • Based on your findings above, does it appear as if the Loyalty Card is positively correlated with sales growth? Would you recommend changing this marketing strategy?
    • Based on your previous findings, recommend marketing positioning that targets a specific demographic. (Hint: Are younger people patronizing the restaurants more than older people?)
    • Indicate what information should be collected to track and evaluate the effectiveness of your recommendations. How can this data be collected? (Hint: Would you use survey/samples or census?)
    • Cite references to support your assignment.

Format your citations according to APA guidelines.

      Submit your assignment.

Implementation of SQL

An Insurance firm is implementing a Microsoft® SQL Server® database that will track customer information, policy information, and transaction histories. The biggest concern is providing access to the information each team needs. Sales representatives need to access customer information to better serve their clients. Claims representatives must access policy information to determine coverage. Supervisors would like to access transaction histories to monitor employee performance. Compliance officers often must gather different and varied information for various regulatory agencies. Mertel executives want to monitor key metrics stored in the database to gauge company performance. 1.   Based on tyour experience, and your research, respond to the following in a minimum of  200 words: (1) Describe what methods you would recommend that the insurance company will use to retrieve information from its databases and why do you recommend those methods?; (2) Discuss whether you would use a custom application or a more generic tool like SAP® BusinessObjects™ or Microsoft Excel; (3) Discuss if a team of analysts would be in charge of running reports and distributing the information; and (4) Discuss if the same approach work for all the users? Defend your recommendation. 2.   create a 700-word minimum – Database Administration and Data Governance Evaluate and assist company decision makers in understanding the importance of database administration and data governance in relation to building scalable and robust applications.

  • Describe how SQL constructs could be used to create data definition language (DDL) and data manipulation languages (DML).
  • Explain how the design would be checked from each role’s perspective, according to the information they require.
  • Use these roles as an example:
  • The administration team needs access to records and permission to update and enter new data.
  • The development teams need to write the expected transactions relatively easily, which might depend on the degree of normalization.
  • The application team needs access to any and all data to manage the interface.

Environmental Scanning

Purpose of Assignment

A strategic management plan addresses four different management functions: environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, evaluation and control. Weeks 3, 4 and 5 individual assignments (Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3) are integrated to generate a strategic management plan.
