Paula Plaintiff’s Really Bad Week, Part 1

Introduction

In this assignment, you’ll need to decide whether Paula Plaintiff has any legal claims arising from a series of unfortunate events. After reading the scenario, answer the questions that follow, making sure to fully explain the basis of your decision.

Paula Plaintiff is shopping at her favorite store, Cash Mart. She is looking for a new laptop, but she can’t find one she likes. Then, realizing that she is going to be late for an appointment, she attempts to leave the store, walking very fast. However, before she can leave, she is stopped by a security guard who accuses her of shoplifting. Paula, who has taken nothing, denies any wrong doing. The officer insists and takes Paula to a small room in the back of the store. The guard tells Paula that if she attempts to leave the room she will be arrested and sent to jail. At this point, the guard leaves the room. Paula is scared and waits in the room for over an hour until the manager comes in and apologizes and tells Paula that she is free to go.

About this same time, Geoffrey Golfer is hitting golf balls in his backyard. Geoffrey decides to break out his new driver and hits a golf ball out of his backyard into the Cash Mart parking lot. The golf ball hits Paula Plaintiff on the head and knocks her unconscious just as she is leaving the store.

  • What are the possible tort claims that Paula can make against Cash Mart? Discuss the elements of the claim and how those elements relate to the facts in the scenario.
  • Was Geoffrey negligent when he hit the golf ball that injured Paula? Discuss the elements of negligence and use facts from the scenario to support your decision.
  • If Paula files a negligence claim against Geoffrey will she file in civil court or criminal court? Explain the difference between civil court and criminal court.

Global Energy Analysis

Worldwide energy consumption varies dramatically, but the impacts are shared by all. The most commonly used fuel sources for energy around the world are fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas. The combustion of fossil fuels releases pollutants into the atmosphere, where the emissions from all countries combine to cause local, regional, and global issues. One of the primary pollutants of concern is carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Carbon dioxide emissions are responsible for climate change, and governments around the world have taken steps to control carbon dioxide levels, but not all countries have been successful in reducing carbon emissions.

While all countries produce pollution and emit greenhouse gases, the emission releases are very unequal across the globe. Consider what kinds of factors would determine how much energy is used by a country, a region, a household, or an individual. What factors would influence the fuel choices made by these people and institutions?

For this assignment, you will conduct research to determine the common fuel sources, sources of emissions, and applicable regulations of a country of your choice and create a PowerPoint presentation designed to educate your classmates. The PG Library has created a library resource with references for you to use to start this assignment. You are also welcome to utilize the Reading assignments in your textbook and other credible sources that you find. The PG Library is also available to search other scientifically-based sources to support your assignment. Please keep in mind that Wikipedia is not considered a reliable resource.

1. Define and provide examples of each:
   1. Fossil fuels, non-renewable energy, and renewable energy.
2. Identify a country that uses fossil fuels as its primary source of energy.
   1. Discuss why the country continues to rely on fossil fuels.
   2. Provide examples of manufactured products or agriculture that are dependent upon fossil fuel use in that country. Consider the level of industrialization in the country and discuss.
3. Discuss impacts of the continued use of fossil fuels:
   1. Include both local and global impacts.
   2. Discuss both long- and short-term impacts on:
      1. The environment, human health, and economy. Be specific and detailed in your discussion.
4. Identify at least one regulation or law that the country put in place to reduce or control emissions and/or air pollution.

   2. How effective has this regulation or law been?
   3. Have emissions or pollution levels decreased?
5. What solutions or new regulations would you implement in order to reduce fossil fuel usage in the country you chose? You can look to other countries around the world or the United Nations for examples of energy and emissions regulations.
6. Global efforts are being made to reduce fossil fuel usage and pollution. Countries must work together to solve these problems. Review the following references for more information about how countries and individuals can work to combat climate change and bridge cultural differences and answer the following questions.

     1. Imagine that the country you selected has chosen to work with another country to implement the solution/regulation you recommended in #5 above. What country would they work with on this project and why did you choose that country to partner with?

For example, what language barriers or religious and social differences would you encounter? What other cultural differences might need to be addressed as these two countries work together?
     3. Describe how countries can bridge cultural differences through strategic partnerships (e.g., a strategic partnership between countries is an Embassy). Include at least two ways that the cultural differences you identified can be addressed.

Built-Tight is preparing its master budget for the quarter ended September 30. Budgeted sales and cash payments for product costs for the quarter follow.

Sales are 20% cash and 80% on credit. All credit sales are collected in the month following the sale. The June 30 balance sheet includes balances of $15,000 in cash; $45,000 in accounts receivable; $4,500 in accounts payable; and a $5,000 balance in loans payable. A minimum cash balance of $15,000 is required. Loans are obtained at the end of any month when a cash shortage occurs. Interest is 1% per month based on the beginning-of-the-month loan balance and is paid at each month-end. If an excess balance of cash exists, loans are repaid at the end of the month. Operating expenses are paid in the month incurred and consist of sales commissions (10% of sales), office salaries ($4,000 per month), and rent ($6,500 per month).

Example:

1.A hardware that I find very important and that we tend to forget is a printer. Especially the all –in-one printer that we can generally see in most electronic stores. Even though the trend is to go paperless, the majority of us cannot follow it. As a student, I need to print and scan papers few times a week, therefore an all-in-one printer is very essential for me.

Brand:There are too many brands out there that produce an all-in-one printer, but the most popular ones are: Canon, HP, Brother, and Samsung. I personally go with Brother, because compared to the other brands, Brother focuses in producing printers. Canon, HP, and Samsung all produce other electronic products.

Price:I take a quick look on Brother’s Website and an all-in-one printer’s price varies from $79.99 to $599.99. Of course, students or households don’t need to buy an expensive one. The $79.99 one is more than perfect and will last long if well taking care of. Also, many retail store may sell them at a lower price.

Features:An all-in-one printer gives you not only the possibility to print, but also to scan and to fax. Most them can print on different types of paper and also recto-verso. Scanning on these machines can be made by deposing the paper on the top tray or by placing the paper in the glass flatbed inside of the printer. Faxing is not as popular as it was before because of emails, but it can be something useful depending on the situation. To fax, paper has to be placed on the top tray and a phone number has to be entered on the keypad. One important feature that many people forget about is the possibility to connect the printer to Wi-Fi. This option is a must in today’s world because it let’s use print or scan from anywhere and from any device as long as we are connected to the same Wi-Fi. For example, I can print a document from my smartphone or tablet wirelessly.

2.After reading the Consumer Report about the all-in-one printers, I learned that it used a certain type of printing and I found out that an application to let us print from our smartphone or tablet is already downloaded in our devices.

Printing type:There are different types of printing and this product uses a a printing type named “Inkjet”. Inkjet prints paper by deposing droplets of ink on the paper instead of speaking it like other printers. It was interesting to see that this method of printing is very efficient. It takes less time for the ink to dry and it uses less ink than other printing procedures.

App:Imagine that we are reading an interesting article on your tablet and that we decide we want to print it. Normally, we would send the link of the article to our email, open the link from a computer, and then print the article. With the applications Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print already installed in our iOS or Android device, we can simply click on a button and our article gets printed. We don’t need to deal with the struggle of downloading the app or go through a third party application.

Question:After reading the Consumer Report and people reviews, I realized that printers are becoming less used with time. I wonder if it will stay among us or if it will join the floppy dick and the DVD player?
