Below are the characteristics of Realism–pick one piece of literature. Then, pick three of the characteristics below  and explain how the piece of literature you chose is a good example of  them. This response should be (at least) 250-300 words in length.

Definitions

Broadly  defined as “the faithful representation of reality” or  “verisimilitude,” realism is a literary technique practiced by many  schools of writing. Although strictly speaking, realism is a technique,  it also denotes a particular kind of subject matter, especially the  representation of middle-class life. A reaction against romanticism, an  interest in scientific method, the systematizing of the study of  documentary history, and the influence of rational philosophy all  affected the rise of realism. According to William Harmon and Hugh  Holman, “Where romanticists transcend the immediate to find the ideal,  and naturalists plumb the actual or superficial to find the scientific  laws that control its actions, realists center their attention to a  remarkable degree on the immediate, the here and now, the specific  action, and the verifiable consequence” (A Handbook to Literature 428).

Many  critics have suggested that there is no clear distinction between  realism and its related late nineteenth-century movement, naturalism. As Donald Pizer notes in his introduction to The Cambridge Companion to American Realism and Naturalism: Howells to London,  the term “realism” is difficult to define, in part because it is used  differently in European contexts than in American literature. Pizer  suggests that “whatever was being produced in fiction during the 1870s  and 1880s that was new, interesting, and roughly similar in a number of  ways can be designated as realism, and that an equally new,  interesting, and roughly similar body of writing produced at the turn of  the century can be designated as naturalism” (5). Put rather too  simplistically, one rough distinction made by critics is that realism  espousing a deterministic philosophy and focusing on the lower classes  is considered naturalism.

In  American literature, the term “realism” encompasses the period of time  from the Civil War to the turn of the century during which William Dean  Howells, Rebecca Harding Davis, Henry James, Mark Twain, and others  wrote fiction devoted to accurate representation and an exploration of  American lives in various contexts. As the United States grew rapidly  after the Civil War, the increasing rates of democracy and literacy, the  rapid growth in industrialism and urbanization, an expanding population  base due to immigration, and a relative rise in middle-class affluence  provided a fertile literary environment for readers interested in  understanding these rapid shifts in culture. In drawing attention to  this connection, Amy Kaplan has called realism a “strategy for imagining  and managing the threats of social change” (Social Construction of American Realism ix).

Realism  was a movement that encompassed the entire country, or at least the  Midwest and South, although many of the writers and critics associated  with realism (notably W. D. Howells) were based in New England. Among  the Midwestern writers considered realists would be Joseph Kirkland, E.  W. Howe, and Hamlin Garland; the Southern writer John W. DeForest’s Miss Ravenal’s Conversion from Secession to Loyalty is often considered a realist novel, too.

Characteristics

(from Richard Chase, The American Novel and Its Tradition)

Renders  reality closely and in comprehensive detail. Selective presentation of  reality with an emphasis on verisimilitude, even at the expense of a  well-made plotCharacter is more important than action and plot; complex  ethical choices are often the subject.Characters appear in their real  complexity of temperament and motive; they are in explicable relation to  nature, to each other, to their social class, to their own past.Class  is important; the novel has traditionally served the interests and  aspirations of an insurgent middle class. (See Ian Watt, The Rise of the Novel)Events  will usually be plausible. Realistic novels avoid the sensational,  dramatic elements of naturalistic novels and romances.Diction is natural  vernacular, not heightened or poetic; tone may be comic, satiric, or  matter-of-fact.Objectivity in presentation becomes increasingly  important: overt authorial comments or intrusions diminish as the  century progresses.Interior or psychological realism a variant form. In Black and White Strangers, Kenneth Warren suggests that a basic difference between realism and sentimentalism is  that in realism, “the redemption of the individual lay within the  social world,” but in sentimental fiction, “the redemption of the social  world lay with the individual” (75-76).
The realism of James and  Twain was critically acclaimed in twentieth century; Howellsian realism  fell into disfavor as part of early twentieth century rebellion against  the “genteel tradition.

Neurological & Male Genitourinary Disorders

25year old, Hispanic female with a chief complaint of right temporal headaches with nausea.  No vomiting.  Headaches do improve with rest and sleeping.

What other subjective data would you obtain?

Data that has already been provided is that a right temporal headache that gets worse with light.  Patient explains she experiences frequent headaches with menses.  Does the patient have a family history?  Can she identify any triggers? Additional questions that should be asked are related to the pain she is experiencing.  On a pain scale of 0-10, how would she rate the pain? How long does the pain last without rest? Does the pain radiate? Describe the pain; is it throbbing, pulsating or stabbing?  Patient takes ibuprofen for the headaches.  Does the medication help reduce the pain? If it does, what is the pain rate?

What other objective findings would you look for?

Patient is wearing dark glasses in a dark room due to photophobia.  Migraine headaches cause intense, throbbing pain, often on one side of the head. Nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, sound and exertion often accompany migraines, which can last several hours or up to three days. Some migraine sufferers experience a visual disturbance called an aura prior to the onset of the migraine. Auras are flashing lights, wavy lines, blurry vision or blind spots (Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American College of Radiology (ACR), 2020).

What diagnostic exams do you want to order?

Blood chemistry and urinalysis can rule out any other medical conditions such as dehydration, diabetes or thyroid disease. An MRI can be used to examine the anatomy of the brain and to assist in the diagnosis of tumors, developmental abnormalities, blood vessel problems and disorders of the eyes and the inner ear.  A CT scan can detect similar abnormalities.  A lumbar puncture also known as a spinal tap, this helps physicians diagnose infections such as meningitis, encephalitis or inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Name 3 differential diagnoses based on this patient presenting symptoms? Give rationales for each differential diagnosis.

Primary headaches are the most common type of headaches, they are painful but not dangerous.  Secondary headaches are characterized by excruciating pain which are usually caused by another more serious condition.  Migraine is the most common form of headache, but not all headaches are migraines. The term “migraine” refers to a headache which is usually (but not always) on one side of the head. It is a headache that lasts from two to seventy-two hours, typically, and it is often associated with nausea and/or vomiting, sensitivity to light and/or sound. The character of the pain is typically a throbbing pain (Stanford Health Care, 2017).  Tension-type headache is most likely the second most common headache type after migraine. They are often referred to as “hatband” headaches because they typically painful around the back of the head, the temples and forehead, as if a tight hat were in place.  A cluster headache is a headache which is short lasting usually between 20 minutes and two hours. It is always one-sided and is associated with symptoms such as a stuffy nose on one side, tearing, an enlarged pupil, or a droopy lid.

Argument Paper Rough Draft

Can this be complet by Sunday 7/22/2018

Now that you have outlined your paper, it is time to start your rough draft. A rough draft should expand on the ideas you included in your outline, and should include introduction and conclusion paragraphs as well as transitional statements between topics in your body paragraphs. This rough draft will compile all the content for your paper in a cohesive manner, and present your full argument.

It is important to think about how to integrate the research you have gathered into your paper. You have a voice, and your voice matters. The research you have found should be used to provide support to your voice and your argument. Extensive quotations or even paraphrased text are not always appropriate or helpful. You should try to limit these to no more than three to five instances throughout your paper. Use the learning activities, discussions, and resources from the Center for Writing Excellence to assist you with appropriately creating and using in-text citations to acknowledge where you have integrated your research within your rough draft.

Write your Argument Paper Rough Draft using the APA Paper Template. Your paper should be 700 to 1,050 words.

Create robust body paragraphs to present your full argument by expanding on the topics in your outline.

  • Ensure each body paragraph has a topic sentence.
  • Incorporate the research you have gathered to support your argument.
  • Make your best attempt at formatting in-text citations and a reference page, which you will learn more about in Week 4. You may use the Reference and Citation Generator to help you construct your citations and references.

Create an introduction paragraph that includes your thesis statement and introduces your reader to the main topics included in your paper.

Create a conclusion paragraph to bring your paper to a close.

Ensure your paper includes the following elements prior to submission:

  • A title page
  • An introduction paragraph with a thesis statement that clearly states your argument.
  • APA-formatted level 1 headings for each main topic
  • A topic sentence to begin each body paragraph under each main topic
  • No more than three to five instances of paraphrased or directly quoted material integrated throughout the paper, followed by the appropriate APA-formatted citation
  • A conclusion paragraph
  • A reference page with a reference listing for a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources

1.  How will accomplishing these objectives support your success in management? What risks or challenges might a manager encounter if they have not mastered these objectives? Explain. As a manager these objectives will help me understand the impact of globalization, the international monetary system and learning how the exchange of currency affect day to day operations when doing business in foreign markets. One of the biggest risks a manager could face is international exposure with no knowledge of the currency exchange rate risk. Exchange rates fluctuate daily and this can cause problems with contracts and affect profits. Other risks may be not being stable enough to remain in the global market.

2.  What is the purpose of the WTO and G8?  Do you believe they are beneficial to Multi-National Companies? The purpose of the WTO is to ensure global trading goes smoothly and all disputes are resolved in a just and fair manner  (Bride, 2018).  They develop and set the rules for global trading using an international commerce system. The G8 is an important meeting of world leaders to discuss foreign policies, terrorism, peace and many other issues in an effort combat the issues and find peace. Yes, the WTO strives to find a balance with meeting the needs of multinational companies and addressing the social and environmental needs of the government.

3.  Why do you believe it is important to understand the international monetary system? The IMS is a system that forms the rules and regulation for trading between countries  (Mitusharo, 2017). I believe it’s important to understand the IMS, so you will know the rules that govern the exchange of currency globally and to know the value of your money in other countries when conducting business. For a business to be successful and to maintain its operations it must know what the currency exchange risk are and how to handle it. Also, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are all a part of the IMS, they can provide funding to those who are having issues with trading which can be very beneficial in the case of a crisis. Learning how to exchange currency and knowing the value of it provides insight into how governments in other countries prioritize and fund projects and work with the private sector to implement initiatives  (Board, 2015) .

Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments

Discussion: Diversity and Health Assessments

May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012).

Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity.

In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds. Your Instructor will assign a case study to you for this Discussion.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on your experiences as a nurse and on the information provided in this week’s Learning Resources on diversity issues in health assessments.
  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned a case study by your Instructor. Note: Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your case study assignment.
  • Reflect on the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient assigned to you.
  • Consider how you would build a health history for the patient. What questions would you ask, and how would you frame them to be sensitive to the patient’s background, lifestyle, and culture? Develop five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.
  • Think about the challenges associated with communicating with patients from a variety of specific populations. What strategies can you as a nurse employ to be sensitive to different cultural factors while gathering the pertinent information?
By Day 3 of Week 2

Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.

Introduction

Note: Developing a strategic plan requires specific steps that need to be executed in a sequence. The assessments in this course are presented in order and should be completed in sequence.

In business, having a plan is a critical element for growth and expansion. However, successful businesses do more than simply plan to earn millions within the next five years; they develop detailed plans that have realistic goals. Typically, these plans include both long-term plans and short-term plans.

Developing your personal long- and short-term plan can help you chart the road to your own success. A well-prepared plan can help you focus your professional efforts, identify resources to help you achieve your goals, prioritize the actions you need to take, and anticipate obstacles.

Competencies Measured

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies:

• Competency 1: Create organizational value. o Describe long-term professional objectives.• Competency 2: Participate collaboratively and respectfully. o Describe the human resources available to achieve long-term objectives.• Competency 3: Communicate effectively. o Write coherently to support a central idea in appropriate format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.• Competency 4: Plan strategically. o Explain a short-term plan to achieve long-term objectives.• Competency 5: Employ high-performance business management techniques. o Explain how industry trends influence change.• Competency 6: Solve problems within professional standards. o Describe the skills necessary to achieve long-term professional objectives.o Describe strategies to overcome obstacles to long-term objectives.• Competency 7: Use appropriate financial models and principles. o Describe long-term financial objectives.o Describe financial resources available to achieve long-term objectives.

Note: Developing a strategic plan requires specific steps that need to be executed in a sequence. The assessments in this course are presented in order and should be completed in sequence.

Success in any endeavor requires focus, long-term planning, and effort. Most long-term objectives require short-term achievements.

Use what you have learned about yourself through the SWOT analysis and environmental scan you completed to develop a long-term and a short-term plan for yourself. Complete the following:

8. Start by describing your 5-year professional and financial objectives. o What title or position would you like to have?o Where would you like to be financially?9. Based on the results of your SWOT analysis and environmental scan, determine the following: o What skills do you need to develop to achieve your 5-year objectives?o Is your industry changing? What do you need to do to grow with it?o What resources do you have to help you achieve your 5-year objectives? (Hint: Resources can mean more than financial; are there people you know who can help you achieve your objective?)10. Now develop a short-term plan that will help you achieve your long-term objectives: o What will you need to accomplish each year to achieve your 5-year objectives?o What monthly/weekly/daily steps will help you reach your long-term objectives?o How will you address obstacles that occur along the way?

To successfully complete this assessment, you may need to do some research on developing long-term and short-term plans. Format this assessment as a research paper following current APA guidelines for both style and citing sources, making sure that you also use correct grammar and mechanics. There is no required minimum or maximum page length; however, you should strive to be as detailed as possible in addressing each point, while also being as clear and concise as possible.
