Developing a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice

As the evidence-based practice skills grow, you may be called upon to share your expertise with others. Evidence-based practice is often conducted with unique outcomes in mind. The evidence-based practice practitioners who share their results can both add to the general body of knowledge and serve as an advocate for the application of Evidence-based practice. This discussion explores the strategies for disseminating EBP within my organization, community, or industry. To disseminate EBP within my organization, the two strategies that I would use are journal clubs and evidence based grand rounds within my clinic. These two strategies provide a smaller setting that will for increased probing and dialogue and provide for an opportunity for increased collaborative connections. This is a way to improve EBP discussions, build relationships, and the EBP in discussion even better (Gallagher-Ford et al., 2011).

To overcome these barriers, one would need the support of both the organization’s management and nurse leaders. This support is important in informing the staff about the importance of the EBP. In addition, specific research and research evidence can help support the EBP to capture the attention of the staff and make them adopt the EBP. Staff and organizational education are also important in supporting the EBP in place and ensuring its success (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).

• Week 10 Assignment – Critical Threats to the Global Environment
  Overview
  The United Nations has continued to retain you as a consultant for a project that deals with climate and the environment. Most developed countries see the dangers of releasing too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and are committed to climate policies that attain a carbon-free future in the next 30 years. They already see the damaging effects that this gas alone is having on the living conditions of crops, wildlife, and humans. As a result, many member states are dissatisfied with the progress of the eight Millennium Development Goals for international development that they established in 2000. The member states see a substantial disconnect between several issues that developed and developing countries believe are priorities. For example, Burundi wants one of the goals to focus on food security, while Austria is adamant that a major global issue should be the negotiation of ceasefires in countries in the midst of civil wars. The UN wants you to work from the list below and prioritize two of the global community’s threats that it deems the most serious to environmental stability.

  Select two threats. Listed below are eight issues that the UN feels pose the most significant threats to global security. Some of these apply to the Earth’s 7.7 billion people, while others are limited primarily to developing countries. Regardless of where these threats are concentrated, your job as a consultant is to identify two of them that you consider the most critical to the globe’s population.

     Write an introduction paragraph of at least one-half page in length identifying the two threats you have selected and the purpose of the paper. Then, for the two threats you chose:
  10. Identify the factors that make it such a serious risk to the global environment that you would choose to present it to the UN.
  11. Analyze the role that humans have played in aggravating this threat to the Earth’s environment.
  12. Suggest initiatives that the global community can take to mitigate the worst effects of this environmental threat.
  13. Write a conclusion paragraph of at least one-half page in length that summarizes your impressions of these risks for global stability.

  15. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). For assistance and information, please refer to the SWS link in the left-hand menu of your course and check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  16. In order to earn full credit, the answers to each of the three questions must be at least two full pages long, making six pages. You must also include the one-half page introduction and one-half page conclusion at the beginning and end of the paper, adding up to one page of content. Finally, you must include a graph or table (see 5, below) that will be at least one page in length. The entire paper will be a minimum of eight pages long.

Theosebia is a freshman at Euphoria State University, Palladia, where she majors in computational-bio-chemical-veterinary engineering. On a holiday, she returns home and her parents ask about her classes. She tells them that in her favorite class she is learning about the history of alchemy. Her parents are not pleased. “We have scrimped and saved and borrowed to send you to college so that you can receive a useful education and find a good job! But you are wasting time on rubbish! Everyone knows that alchemy was a fraud and anyone who believed in it must have been ignorant or a charlatan or both! When you told us that you had to take a GE class in the humanities, we agreed that you would take a class about the history of science, not the history of nonsense!” After her parents calm down, Theosebia tells them that they have the wrong idea about the history of alchemy.

Write a dialogue between Theosebia and one or both of her parents, in which she tries to convince them that their objections to studying the history of alchemy are mistaken. (Do not repeat the part of the conversation that I have written above.) Organize the dialogue as a sequence of exchanges between Theosebia and one or both of her parents. Each exchange should have a well-defined topic, with the parent(s) raising specific objections, to which Theosebia responds, using knowledge from this course. Think about the most important points about the history of alchemy that you want to address and structure the dialogue around them. Your dialogue should make at least four main points. This means that Theosebia should deliver at least four paragraph-length speeches, each one devoted to a different argument or topic (announced with a topic sentence) about the history of alchemy. Theosebia must back up her claims with evidence in the form of specific examples from lectures and readings. Use at least one quotation from the assigned texts in each of Theosebia’s four main statements (a total of at least four quotations).

You can format the dialogue like a play (example) or like a short story (so long as it consists primarily of dialogue). Provide citations for all quotations in parentheses or footnotes (but not endnotes). Citations should consist of the last name of the author and the page number, for example: “Principe, 127.” Use the page numbers of the original texts, not those that may have been added to the course reader.  You can find full bibliographic for all readings in the reading guides and in the reader’s table of contents. (A bibliography at the end of the essay is not required.) Do not refer to readings from outside the course. You do not need to provide citations to lectures. Avoid excessive quotation, especially from secondary sources. (See Essay Tips for clarification.)

Essays will be evaluated for organization, clarity, and grammar as well as content. Read these essay tips and look at the rubric which will be used to evaluate the essay.

Format your essay in a standard, black 12-point font such as Calibiri or Times.

Upload an electronic copy of your essay by 12 PM on April 26. Late essays without an extension will be marked down 5% for each day that they are late. (See syllabus for policy on extensions.)

The essay evaluates your individual achievement. Do not collaborate on the essay in any way with other students. (You may discuss your essay with your TA, myself, or writing specialists and tutors.) All the usual standards of plagiarism and academic honesty apply (see syllabus). If you study for the in-class exam with classmates, beware of discussing the essay in order to avoid unintentional plagiarism. Essays that resemble one another closely will be referred to Student Judicial Affairs for investigation.

To Prepare:

• This multiweek Assignment requires you to record your work in an individual blog within the classroom (your “log”) that will be accessible to both your peers and your Instructor at all times.
• To complete your blog entries, navigate to your blog in the Blogs area of the course menu.
• Click on Create Blog Entry.
• Title your blog using your name and the week. For example, “Smith_J Week 2.”
• In the Entry Message area, make an initial entry that very briefly states the purpose of your blog and the focus area on which you intend to concentrate.
• Click on Post Entry when you are finished. You will follow these steps for each blog entry.
• Access at least two listservs and at least two active blogs in order to follow topics and trends. These can be those listed in your weekly Learning Resources or those chosen on your own. Make weekly notes in your blog to capture topics and developments in the field. Your blog should include periodic reflection on the content.

Reminder: As you make posts in your log, be sure to support your postings with specific references to the resources you use. Use APA formatting to cite your sources.

Sources for your Environmental Scan: The Learning Resources list several listservs to which you can subscribe. You will need to conduct an Internet search for assessment and evaluation blogs. Do not assume that all blogs are equal; some are marketing tools by consultants that may not advance your knowledge. If you use websites as resources, be certain they are updated frequently and are not simply static repositories of information.

What to log: The purpose of a scan is to read and reflect on many sources of information. Realistically, however, you will not be able to reflect on all topics. Create your own heuristic technique for a simple tally of all topics that emerge; and in addition to that, select several topics to actually report on. Your report may take the form of synthesis of comments on these topics, or the report may compare and contrast the treatment of those topics on the different listservs and blogs.
