Please answer the 10 essay questions from the list below. each question has to be answered thoroughly with 2-3 paragraphs as needed to explain your position… but fully explain your position in light of the philosophical information learned over the course of the semester (NOTE: a proper paragraph is at least 5-7 full sentences). This is an exercise in application of the information you have learned from the authors/material to answer in your own words. If you do not answer the issue/information listed you receive no points for the essay.

Section I: Epic as Human-Cultural Identity Odyssey – Homer 1. According the Odyssey [1] Jove/Jupiter/Zeus stated to the Assembly of Gods “See now, how men lay blame upon us gods for what is after all nothing but their own folly. Look at Aegisthus; he must needs make love to Agamemnon’s wife unrighteously and then kill Agamemnon, though he knew it would be the death of him; for I sent Mercury/Hermes to warn him not to do either of these things, inasmuch as Orestes would be sure to take his revenge when he grew up and wanted to return home. Mercury/ Hermes told him this in all good will but he would not listen, and now he has paid for everything in full”; [2] Ulysses/Odysseus stated to Nausicaa “The winds and waves have taken me all the way from the Ogygian island, and now fate has flung me upon this coast that I may endure still further suffering for I do not think that I have yet come to the end of it, but rather that heaven has still much evil in store for me”; [3] and Nausicaa stated to Ulysses/Odysseus “Stranger, you appear to be a sensible, well-disposed person. There is no accounting for luck; Jove/Jupiter/Zeus gives prosperity to rich and poor just as he chooses, so you must take what he has seen fit to send you, and make the best of it.” Explain the view of gods, fate, and man within Greek belief, thought, and culture as a whole. Do you consider Ulysses/ Odysseus as a “hero” or a lying, cheating, killing, manipulative power hungry man in quest for his immortality? Explain.

Section II: Ancient Philosophy as Basis of Western Thought Euthyphro & Apology – Socrates & Plato 2. The portrait established here of Socrates by Plato is a very particular type of person and philosophic mind. Define and describe in detail (via examples) the type of [1] philosophic mind/thinker, [2] religiosity/irreligosity, [3] teacher/instructor, and lastly [4] overall person. Is Socrates a man of incredible thought, morality, and wisdom or merely a manipulative old man in quest of trapping young men into his sophistic way of thought? Explain. Do you think Socrates an agreeable type of person ‘to be’ or ‘not to be’? Explain. Physics, On the Soul & Metaphysics – Aristotle 3. Aristotle’s concept of ‘nature’ exudes from, is part of, is separate to and at the same time a portion of the Divine (so to speak). Explain the concepts of [1] soul(s) at all levels, [2] thought, [3] motion, [4] ‘potentiality’ and ‘actuality’, [5] nature, [6] and the Unmoved Mover itself. Do you think Aristotle’s vision of the Divine, attaining perfection, mystical union, singularity of soul, etc. are practical and attainable in a single life? Explain.

Section III: Philosophic-Religious Thought/Theory The City of God Against the Pagans – St. Augustine 4. In Book IV St. Augustine gives reason for rise of the Roman Empire and its origins being within the purview of the one True God as well as how and by whom worship is to be administered. Further in Book X St. Augustine speaks of theurgy, the ‘Platonists,’ other religious groups, etc. and their importance within the debate. Explain the importance of and validity given to St. Augustine’s assertions in contrast to his well known adversaries and their positions (meaning give their positions as well as his). Do you think St. Augustine has been given favourable treatment over the centuries atop others strictly on sound thought or preferential theological grounds? Does the logician/philosopher or the theologian gain or remain credible? Explain. Summa Theologica – St. Thomas Aquinas 5. In Question 1. The Nature and Extent of Sacred Doctrine: Article 1-10 (speaking of philosophy, meanings of words, science, practical science, sacred doctrine, wisdom, etc.) St. Thomas addresses objections, responses, and his answers to sacred doctrine et al. Explain the importance of and validity given to St. Thomas’ assertions within these sections. Do you think St. Thomas is correct in his assertions on God and man? How does St. Thomas differ from St. Augustine? Explain.

Section IV: Social and Political Thought/Theory Communist Manifesto – Karl Marx & Frederich Engels 6. Marx and Engels spell out their concept of class divisions and ultimate liberation of the human being from all manipulation… be they personal, social, cultural, religious, economic or even geopolitical. Explain the importance of and validity given to Marx and Engels’ assertions in detail concerning the above mentioned topics (personal, social, cultural, religious, economic, geopolitical). Do you think Marx and Engels were correct in their assertions and did they meet their goal/objectives? Explain. On Liberty – John Stuart Mill 7. Mill stated “All that makes existence valuable to any one, depends on the enforcement of restraints upon the actions of other people… the object of this essay is to assert one very simple principle… that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection.” In relation to the individual to what extent or end does Mill express [1] society, [2] government, [3] the majority, or [4] the minority go in their quest for stability and/or pleasures? Explain the importance of Mill’s assertions in detail and whether Mill is correct in these assertions? Why is personal pleasure so important to Mill?

Section V: Social and Economic Thought/Theory A Wealth of Nations – Adam Smith 8. In Book I, Chapter IV: Of the Origin and Use of Money Smith writes of Exchange Surplus and Value while in Book I, Chapter V: Of the Real and Nominal Price of Commodities, or of their Price in Labour, and their Price in Money he writes of Labour, Barter, and Money. Explain the importance of Smith’s assertions in detail in comparison to our example of ‘the butcher, brewer, baker, and beggar’ (also from the writings of Smith). Do you think Smith is correct in these assertions and do his ideas support the ideals of J.S. Mill? Explain.

Section VI: Ethical Theory and Thought on the Self Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals – Immanuel Kant 9. Kant states “All men attribute to themselves freedom of will. Hence come all judgments upon actions as being such as ought to have been done, although they have not been done. However, this freedom is not a conception of experience, nor can it be so, since it still remains, even though experience shows the contrary of what on supposition of freedom are conceived as its necessary consequences… Therefore freedom is only an idea of reason, and its objective reality in itself is doubtful; while nature is a concept of the understanding which proves, and must necessarily prove, its reality in examples of experience.” Explain the importance of and validity given to Kant’s assertions in light of his concepts of the categorical imperative, truth, duty in comparison to the thoughts and ideals of Marx and Engels. Do you think Kant or Marx and Engels have it right? Explain.

Section VII: Scientific Thought and Human Experience On the Origin of Species by Natural Selection – Charles Darwin The Elaboration of the Universe – Jean Piaget Sustainability Does Not Come Naturally: A Darwinian Perspective on Values; Science Delusion and the Appetitefor Wonder – Richard Dawkins 10. (1) Darwin states “Thus it is, as I believe, that when the males and females of any animal have the same general habits of life, but differ in structure, colour, and ornament, such differences have been mainly caused by sexual selection; that is individual males, have had, in successive generations, some slight advantages over other males, in their weapons, means of defence, or charms; and have transmitted these advantages to their male offspring. Yet, I would not wish to attribute all such sexual differences to this agency…”; (2) Piaget states “Thus it may be seen that thought in its various aspects reproduces on its own plane the processes of evolution we have observed in the case of sensory motor intelligence and the structure of the initial practical universe. The development of reason, outlined on the sensory motor level, follows the same laws, once social life and reflective thought have been formed.”; (3) Dawkins states “Now values… By values I am going to mean the criteria in the brain by which animals choose how to behave… the majority of the things in the universe don’t actively strive for anything. They just are… Humans are unique in many ways and perhaps the most obviously unique feature is language… language, as far as we know, has evolved only once… According to the young and thriving discipline of evolutionary psychology, the language learning module [within the human] is just an example of a whole set of inherited special-purpose computational modules in the brain… These modules will presumably be mediated by specific built-in values. If we turn our Darwinian eyes on our modern civilized selves and our predilections – our aesthetic values, our capacity for pleasure, our arts, our philosophies – it is important to wear sophisticated spectacles.” Now… put on the ‘sophisticated spectacles’ alluded by Dawkins and explain man by the thought of Darwin, Piaget, and Dawkins in relation to [1] how man acts by evolution, [2] ‘behaves’ via psychology, [3] and should act via philosophical values. After experiencing many different philosophies throughout the semester who has it right in comparison Darwin, Piaget, Dawkins or do they have the correct formulation of reality? Explain. I

Film Response Paper 2

Here is how the assignment is to be completed:

•  First, pick a film from the supplemental list that interests you.  All the films on this list in some way relate to this class, so make sure that you find one that is interesting and/or enjoyable.  The supplemental film list is divided into four lists that correspond to dates during the semester and the three units of the class.  Make sure that the movie that you pick comes from the list that is appropriate for that date in which you signed up to write your response paper.

•  Second, watch the movie and takes notes on it while you watch.

•  Third, figure out the plot and the overall messages this film makes about Indians even if Indians are minor characters. Why is this film is interesting and how does it relates to what we have been studying in the class?  The film does not necessarily have to be precisely relevant to the topic or reading of the week at the time of your write your paper—you can reference topic from weeks previous or the larger themes of the class.

•  Fourth, think about the ways in which this film meets and/or contradicts the genre conventions we have been discussing?  And think about how it might meet or contradict expectations of Indianness?

•  Lastly, taking all of these things into consideration write your paper, figure out a thesis that allows you to say one thing interesting about this movie.

o  Here’s how to write you paper: The body of your paper needs to include at least one example of shot selection, one example of editing, and one example of sound that proves the main point (your thesis) that your are trying to make about the movie.

o  Don’t summarize: I expect analysis not a summary of plot, so only discuss the plot as you are explaining the importance of and as it relates to the examples of shot selection, editing and sound that you are discussing.

o  Remember:

§  Plot/Narrative is the events of what happens in the movie, what and who the movie is about, and who the main characters are.

§  Shot Selection is all of the visual elements the director is puts in the scene, how these elements spatially relate to each other and perspective from which the camera is set-up.

§  Editing is the order of and relationship between shots, what shots are put next to each other, and what shots are put in what parts of the movie.

§  Sound is the sounds effect and music that are paired with a specific scenes/shots.

European Imperialism

5 to 6 sentences

The viewpoint of some is that European Imperialism was justified because it ultimately led to a better life for colonized peoples. (ch.24 “New Imperialism”)  Do you agree or disagree?  Support your stance.

Reply to student discussion 3 sentences only

I think that European Imperialism was not justified because it exploited the liberty of colonized peoples.

European imperialism gave some advantages to colonized countries; they started to learn Western culture and liberalism, which later led to their own independence. It helped colonized people to be more modern and educated, being away from the tradition and pursuing a new Western idea of politics, economics, and materials.

On the other hand, European imperialism had negative effects on colonized peoples. As European countries colonized countries, they started to interfere with the affairs of the colonized countries. The colonized countries were getting lost thier sovereignty as one independent country. For the example of colonized country was Korea. At that time, Japan was extending their power near by countries , motivated by the European imperialism. When Japan occupied Korea, they established their government, interfered most of the affairs, and decided most important decisions; Korea lost their sovereignty.

There was a clear advantage that imperialism could lead the modernization on the colonized countries quickly ,but they were eventually getting the modernization and revolution as the ideas were spreading in the world. No one can cure the memories of cruel domination when European colonies occupied there.

Controversies in Industrial and Organizational Assessment

 Due 8/28/2017    PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 11 in the text, the articles by Baez (2013), Hogan, Barrett, and Hogan (2007), Morgeson, Campion, and Dipboye (2007), Peterson, Griffith, Isaacson, O’Connell, and Mangos (2011), and the Maximizing Human Potential Within Organizations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., Building Better Organizations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., and Top Minds and Bottom Lines (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. brochures on the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) website.

Evaluate the MMP1-2-RF Police Candidate Interpretive Reports for Mr. C (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. and Ms. D. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. For this discussion, you will take on the role of an industrial-organizational psychologist recently awarded a contract to evaluate potential police candidates. The purpose of the evaluations is to determine the psychological capability of the applicants to be certified as police officers in your state. The applicants you are examining are applying for certification and will be vested with a position of public trust. If certified as police officers, the individuals will likely be required at some future time to exercise significant physical strength and undergo high emotional stress. As the examining psychologist, you are required to comment on the applicants’ social comprehension, judgment, impulse control, potential for violence, and/or any psychological traits that might render her or him psychologically at risk to be certified. The state requires that each applicant’s examination include the following elements:

Interview and History: The psychologist must personally interview the applicant and provide a summary of the applicant’s personal, educational, employment, and criminal history.

Required Personality Test: The applicant shall be administered any current standard form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) by the licensed psychologist who interviewed the individual, or by a paraprofessional employed by and under the direct control and supervision of that licensed psychologist.

Other Testing Methods: If (after conducting the required test) the licensed psychologist is unable to certify the applicant’s psychological capability or risk to exercise appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer, the psychologist is directed to personally employ whatever other psychological measuring instrument(s) and/or technique(s) deemed necessary to form her or his professional opinion. The use of any such instrument(s) and/or technique(s) requires a full and complete written explanation to the commission.

For the purposes of this discussion, assume the interview and history information reported to you by Mr. C. and Ms. D. is unremarkable and that neither candidate communicated anything to you during the interview that raised concerns about her or his capabilities to exercise appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer. Review the MMP1-2-RF Police Candidate Interpretive Reports for Mr. C. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Ms. D. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and evaluate the professional interpretation of this testing and assessment data from an ethical perspective.

In your initial post, communicate your conclusions about Mr. C. and Ms. D., either recommending certification or communicating reservations. After you have made your decision, begin the section on each candidate with one of the following statements, identifying each candidate by name.

To recommend certification: I have examined [insert applicant’s name], and it is my professional opinion that this person is psychologically capable of exercising appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer.
Follow the above statement with a one-paragraph rationale for your conclusion based on the available test results.

Follow the rationale with a brief comparison of any additional assessment instruments you might consider administering beyond the MMPI-2-RF. Debate the pros and cons of the potential use of other assessments. Explain any ethical implications that may arise from the interpretation of this data.

To communicate reservations: I have examined [insert applicant’s name], and it is my professional opinion that this person is psychologically at risk for exercising appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer.
Follow the statement with a one-paragraph rationale for your conclusion based on the available test results.

Follow the rationale with a brief comparison of any additional assessment instruments you recommend administering beyond the MMPI-2-RF. Debate the pros and cons of using other assessments. Explain any ethical implications that may arise from the interpretation of this data.

Discussion 1: Case Study: Innovations in Distribution Strategy

This week’s readings feature a discussion of logistics, including a case study of the future of same-day delivery. This case illustrates how companies can find competitive advantages through becoming better at logistics. Home delivery, as a service logistic, has been popular in the United States since the end of World War II and the advent of suburban growth. More recently, the service has once again been increasing in popularity for many reasons that may vary from target market to target market. For example, when Tom Monahan created Domino’s Pizza, the market for pizzas on college campuses was very high. Therefore, when Monahan started his Domino’s business, he decided to offer free home delivery guaranteed within 30 minutes.

More recently, Amazon and other online retailers have begun experimenting with same-day delivery. This brief case (two pages) considers the question of whether same-day delivery is going to expand or disappear in the future.

For this Discussion, read the Chopra case study article and review the readings on logistics.

By Day

Post your answers to the following questions, making sure your response is cohesive and well-reasoned:

  • What are the characteristics of businesses that can succeed with same-day delivery?
  • What are the potential trade-offs when companies consider this type of service to offer to their customers?
  • What factors related to innovation would increase the likelihood of success and why? In formulating your response, consider the following along with any other factors that you think are important:
    • Does home delivery reduce any costs?
    • Is the location of warehousing facilities important?
    • Can multiple customer orders be bundled together (urban versus rural market)?
    • Is the inventory mix important (e.g., simple or complex)?
    • Are there transportation or technology advances available?

Analyzing Diagnostic Criteria

 Discussion: Analyzing Diagnostic Criteria

Marriage, couple, and family helping professionals work from a systemic vantage point—they view issues and change as relational. That being said, they must be familiar with the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5 in order to work within the field of mental health care at large. The DSM-5, of course, is individual rather than systemic in focus, and therefore it is wise for marriage, couple, and family helping professionals to view diagnostic criteria through a critical lens. Many of the disorders also are not based on clear, clinical cut-off criteria, and they require informed clinical judgment in order to be applied appropriately.

Note also that helping professionals should consider intersections of physical, mental health, and relationship considerations as they relate to sexual dysfunctions, compulsions, and addictions. For example, a physical examination by a qualified healthcare professional is typically warranted prior to making a diagnosis of a sexual dysfunction in order to rule out any physical causes for the symptoms.

Analyze the diagnostic criteria of major sexual dysfunctions and disorders in the DSM-5. Review the case study below and reflect on which DSM-5 sexual dysfunction/disorder might be the most reflective of the client’s symptoms. Then consider a counterargument as to why this dysfunction/disorder might not be appropriate for this client.

Susan, age 34, is a married mother of two preschool-age children (ages 4 and 2). Her husband, Steve, age 35, works full time, and Susan works part time on the weekends but primarily is a stay-at-home mother to her children.
The couple sought couples counseling, and their primary presenting concern was that Susan has not had any interest in sex with Steve for the past year. The couple reports that they have had intercourse about three times in the past year (“always at Steve’s initiation”); they rarely display physical affection toward one another; and they fought frequently about their lack of sex for about the first 6 months of the past year, but lately they have not fought often about the issue.
The partners indicate that, up until a year ago, Susan was very interested in sex, and they had sex approximately three times per week throughout their marriage (aside from immediately following the birth of their children). Susan states that she can’t pinpoint any particular reason for her lack of interest in sex and says, “Really, I just don’t want it anymore. I’m not sure if I ever will again.” Steve says that he is very frustrated but doesn’t want to fight about it. He says, “I just want my wife back.”

Post by Day 4 identifying a DSM-5 sexual dysfunction disorder that might reflect Susan’s symptoms. Research the literature to further understand Susan and Steve’s situation. What biopsychosocial factors may be affecting the sexual aspects of the couple’s relationship?

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the resources.

The Action of The Thyroid Hormone

The thyroid gland is a vital hormone gland that plays a crucial role in the human body’s metabolism, growth, and development. It helps regulate many body functions by constantly releasing a steady number of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream. The thyroid hormones produced include triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4) released when needed. T3 and T4’s main activity is to boost the basal metabolic rates of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and fats in the body. One of the thyroid hormone effects is carbohydrate metabolism, where T3 and T4 stimulate almost all aspects of carbohydrate metabolism. This includes enhancing the insulin-dependent entry of glucose into the cells and increased gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis to generate free glucose (McCance & Huether, 2018). The increase of these thyroid hormones also stimulates fat mobilization leading to increased concentrations of fatty acids in plasma. They also enhance fatty acids oxidation in various tissues, and the plasma concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides inversely correlate with thyroid hormone levels. One of the diagnostic indications of hypothyroidism is an increase in blood cholesterol concentration.

Thyroid hormone also affects body temperature. These hormones affect blood vessel dilation, which affects the rate at which heat can escape the body. The more dilated blood vessels are, the faster heat can escape. Therefore, individuals suffering from hyperthyroidism will experience fever, while hypothyroidism will experience a decrease in body temperature. T3 and T4 hormones are also involved in brain maturation during fetal development by regulating actin polymerization during neuronal development. It also enhances growth in mammals since this physiologic process depends upon multiple endocrine controls. Thyroid hormone increases the heart rate, cardiac contractility, and cardiac output. They also promote vasodilation, which leads to enhanced blood flow to many organs, and the hormones also affect the catecholamine actions.

Week 10 Initial Response

In order for the body to function appropriately certain hormones have to be released and regulated within the body. Thyroid hormones play a large part in the body concerning multiple functions. The thyroid hormone functions on a negative feedback loop, which involves the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and the thyroid gland (McCance & Huether, 2018). The appropriate function of this negative feedback loop is critical for the body. Thyroid hormone has a significant role in growth, maturation and function  of the tissue within the body (McCance & Huether, 2018).

Thyroid Hormones and the Body

As stated previously the thyroid hormone plays a part in many of the functions within the body. Thyroid hormone plays a role in normal growth and development, metabolism, neurological function, cardiovascular function, and respiratory function (McCance & Huether, 2018). For example, the cardiovascular system will experience hypertension as well as hypertension when there is dysfunction involving the thyroid hormone (Razvi et al., 2018). Besides, the cardiovascular system thyroid hormones also plays a significant role in metabolism. Thyroid hormone play an active part in the breakdown of lipids and glucose in the body, which give the body a basal metabolism (Erdogan, 2020). Now, if someone who has hypothyroidism (not enough thyroid hormone) they will have a slower metabolism and be a little heavier; but on the other hand a person with hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) will have a very high metabolism and typically be very thin (McCance & Huether, 2018). Finally, thyroid hormone also plays a role in muscle function with the body, as well as the skin surrounding the muscle (McCance & Huether, 2018).
