INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS

1. Some economists argue that the rising U.S. budget deficit in the 2000-2015 period explains the

growing U.S. current account balance deficit during this time period. They refer to this as the “twin

deficits’ problem. Conceptually and analytically: why would a rising U.S. budget deficit be associated

with a growing current account balance deficit? Do you believe that the U.S. budget deficit explains the

current account balance deficit? Why or why not?

2. The economist Jacob Viner was skeptical that bilateral or regional trade agreements are beneficial to

world trade. He thought that multilateral trade agreements represent the best way to promote global trade.

A. What is the difference between regional/bilateral trade agreements and multilateral trade agreements?

Give an example of a multilateral trade agreement, describing how it came about and when it started to

operate.

B. Also, give an example of three regional/bilateral trade agreements, one in Asia, one in Africa, and one

in Central America, stating which countries form part of the agreement and when it started to function.

C. Why did Professor Viner think that bilateral/regional trade agreements are not necessarily good for

world trade? Please explain and provide any research or evidence supporting his claim.

3. The World Bank has studied the so-called East Asian miracle economies (China, Malaysia, Singapore,

South Korea, etc.), concluding that the export-oriented and trade-oriented policies of these countries

explain the remarkable economic growth these economies have sustained over time. But Harvard

economist Dani Rodrik disagrees. He believes that international trade and the growth of exports were

NOT the key factors causing these economies to grow fast. He points out that there were other forces that

lie behind the economic success of these countries. What are those forces and do you agree with Rodrik or

with the World Bank about the role of international trade and exports in the economic growth of the East

Asian miracle economies? Please provide any research or evidence on these issues.

4. When studying financial crises in the world, the East Asian crisis of 1997 stands out because it was so

unexpected, given the sustained economic growth of these countries for a long time before the crises

occurred.

A. What was the East Asian crisis of 1997? Which countries were involved and what were the

consequences of the crisis (on various economic indicators, such as income growth, exchange rates, etc.).

B. What were the main factors that caused the financial crisis to develop? Please state at least four key

factors that were associated with the crisis, providing any studies or data supporting your explanations.

C. What policies would you recommend developing countries adopt to avoid future financial crises?

NURS6053-WEEK3-REPLY1

To begin with, competing needs greatly impact the development of policies in organizations all across the country.  The competing needs of workforce and patients are two that I feel are held in high priority.  Policies are put into place to better the patient and the workplace as a whole.  Polices are put into place to make the nurse and healthcare team care for the patients in the most holistic way possible.  Becoming ethically aware is very important because it allows nurses to identify the problems of patients and figure out ways to best treat those patients (Milliken, 2018).  Policies are put into place because of the workforce.  There is a need for policies to set up a standard for healthcare professionals to practice under to ensure that the patients are receiving the best care possible.  By setting up policies for the workforce, we can give the employees guidelines to go by to make sure the job is done effectively and efficiently.  Also, by setting up payment policies that are competitive with other companies, organizations can help to relieve the healthcare issue of nursing shortage.  The policy of raising payment to the employees help to make that organization competitive and alleviate the nursing shortage at that organization.  Nursing shortage greatly impacts patient outcomes and patients’ satisfaction.  The nursing shortage can lead to prolonged wait time for care, prolonged wait time for lab results and increased errors in the healthcare system as a whole (Buerhaus et al. 2005).  The needs of patients may be the most important when discussing policies.  There are multiple policies put into place to ensure that the patients receive the most affordable and quality care.  For example, there are certifications, exams, and licensures the healthcare staff must have in order to care for the patients.  These are all put into place for patient safety.  Patient safety is at the forefront of healthcare and will remain at the forefront forever.  These policies impact the nursing shortage because it could place a strain on the nurses and may cause some people to deter away from the profession.  However, these are policies that must be put into place to make sure the patients are receiving safe and effective cares at all times.  With inappropriate nurse-patient ratios and decreased nursing satisfaction comes an increase in negative outcomes for the patients (Peate, 2020).  Yet, all of these certifications and licensure are a must to ensure the nurses are capable and quality healthcare professionals.

In conclusion, there are multiple needs to be considered when discussing implementation of policies.  Healthcare is always changing but the most important thing will always be the patient and that is what should remain of the highest priority.

Module 1 – Case

LEADERSHIP IN HEALTH EDUCATION AND SECURING FUNDING FOR HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Assignment Overview

Health educators often serve as directors or coordinators of the health education projects or programs. If these projects/programs are to be successful, they must know how to work effectively as leaders of the teams they supervise. To this end, this module focuses on styles of leadership and some of the duties they perform.

As the program director at a local community based organization you have conducted a needs assessment and determine that members of your service population are increasingly at risk for diabetes. Your executive director has asked that you develop an intervention to address this problem but that you also identify funding agencies that award grants in support of diabetes prevention programs

Case Assignment

There are two parts to this assignment both have multiple requirements.

Part I: After reading Community Tool Box Chapter 13, Section 3 (i.e., Styles of Leadership), write an essay in which you reflect upon your own leadership style. Please ensure that your paper addresses the following specific questions:

  • Of the styles presented-autocratic, managerial, demographic, and collaborative-which best characterizes you? Why?
  • Which style(s) do you believe to be most effective for health educators? Why?
  • Which do you think are least effective? Again, please explain.

NOTE: Please ensure that you support your analysis with evidence from background readings and additional scholarly sources.

Part II: Read Chapter 42, Sections 4-5 of the Community Tool Box (i.e., Applying for Grant: The General Approach and Writing a Grant) and, after doing so, write a three-page paper in which you describe the steps you will take to secure funding for your diabetes prevention program. Your paper should clearly delineate:

  • Two potential funding sources (these can be foundations, the government, or private businesses/corporations)
  • Eligibility requirements for grants from these agencies/organizations and the extent to which your program and organization satisfy these
  • The funding mechanism, i.e., Call for Proposal (CFP), Request for Proposals (RFP), Request for Applications (RFA), Program Announcement, etc.
  • The timeline for submission and review of your grant proposal

NOTE: For clarification, you are not being asked to develop an intervention for this assignment; you are however being asked to explore funding possibilities for such.

Length for Part 1 should be 2-3 pages.

Length for Part 2 should be 3-pages.

Assignment Expectations

Assessment and Grading: Your paper will be assessed based on the performance assessment rubric that is linked within the course. Review it before you begin working on the assignment.

The following guidance appears only in Module 1, but it applies to the assignments throughout the course:

File format:   Your work should be prepared using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Excel depending upon the assignment instructions. For assignments requiring video or voice recordings, use media formats that are supported by MyTLC Courses as noted in our Trident Support page.

In-text citations and references: Be sure that all information and ideas in your papers are supported by in-text citations and corresponding references at the end of the paper.

Scholarly sources:   At least three scholarly sources should be included in your paper. Online sources must be limited to credible professional and scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, e-books, or specific webpages on websites from a university, government, or nonprofit organization (these have extensions .edu, .gov, or .org). Presenting consumer sources such as e-magazines, newspapers, Wikipedia, WebMD, or other commercial websites (these have extensions .com) as references is not appropriate.

Scholarly writing:   Use an academic paper format, not an essay based on your opinions or experience. Avoid using the first person in writing. Synthesize what you learned from the sources you read; write papers in your own words; and cite sources within the text, as well as include a properly formatted reference list.

Use of direct quotes: Use of direct quotes should be avoided. Only use direct quotes when preserving the exact words of an author is necessary. In the rare instance that directly quoted material is used, it must be properly cited (with quotation marks and page numbers in the in-text citation); quotes should not exceed 5-10% of the total paper content.

The Writing Style Guide that is linked on the TLC Portal homepage under My Resources will help clarify expectations.

Homework has several parts but I will have to email the other two parts to you and needs to be completed by Wednesday 12-23-2020

The state legislature recognizes the need to focus efforts and resources on criminal justice reform. Acting as a state policy analyst and building on the annotated bibliography and literature review you have completed, propose 2 policy alternatives to address criminal justice reform.

Your readings in the course have exposed you to many of the key topics in criminal justice while showing you the importance of research and theories to the development of sound policies. You have seen how the writing in the text and other sources is not mere opinion or unsupported assertions. Rather, the work is built upon existing knowledge and contemporary studies.

As you consider how to advise the legislature on how to address criminal justice reform in your state, you must rely on factual information and utilize a theoretical foundation. Criminal behavior results from a variety of factors explained through various theoretical perspectives. One or more theories may draw your attention as instructive about the issues surrounding criminal behavior. Have these theories been supported by research?

Assignment Guidelines

You are a policy analyst in the legislative affairs office of your state legislature. The criminal justice committee of the legislature has requested recommendations about how to address criminal justice reform in the state. You must conduct research and assemble 2 possible policy initiatives in your proposal. Use the 7 step process outlined in the MUSE link, CHDS Policy Options Analysis. Include the 7 steps in your proposal.

  1. Define the Problem
  2. Construct Alternative Solutions
  3. Criteria for Judging Success of Proposed Solutions
  4. Projected outcomes for alternative Solutions
  5. Analyze Trade-Offs for Solutions
  6. Choose Best Solutions
  7. Explain Recommendations.

Address the following in 3–4 pages:

  • Prepare a professional policy memo to the criminal justice committee outlining the actions to be taken, funding sources, and implementation challenges that may arise for each alternative.
    • Compare and contrast the two policy recommendations.
  • How would you evaluate whether either policy was successful after it was implemented?
  • How will you utilize your research from the first 3 weeks? Explain.

Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Master Budget:

You have just been hired as a new management trainee by Earrings Unlimited, a distributor of earrings to various retail outlets located in shopping malls across the country. In the past, the company has done very little in the way of budgeting and at certain times of the year has experienced a shortage of cash. Since you are well trained in budgeting, you have decided to prepare a master budget for the upcoming second quarter. To this end, you have worked with accounting and other areas to gather the information assembled below.

The company sells many styles of earrings, but all are sold for the same price—$13 per pair. Actual sales of earrings for the last three months and budgeted sales for the next six months follow (in pairs of earrings):

January (actual)           20,600                                June (budget)                    50,600

February (actual)         26,600                                July (budget)                      30,600

March (actual)             40,600                                 August (budget)                 28,600

April (budget)               65,600                                September (budget)           25,600

May (budget)             100,600

The concentration of sales before and during May is due to Mother’s Day. Sufficient inventory should be on hand at the end of each month to supply 40% of the earrings sold in the following month.

Suppliers are paid $4.30 for a pair of earrings. One-half of a month’s purchases is paid for in the month of purchase; the other half is paid for in the following month. All sales are on credit. Only 20% of a month’s sales are collected in the month of sale. An additional 70% is collected in the following month, and the remaining 10% is collected in the second month following sale. Bad debts have been negligible.

Monthly operating expenses for the company are given below:

Variable:

Sales commissions            4% of sales

Fixed:

Advertising                         $ 230,000

Rent                                   $   21,000

Salaries                              $ 112,000

Utilities                               $     8,500

Insurance                           $     3,300

Depreciation                       $   17,000

Insurance is paid on an annual basis, in November of each year.

The company plans to purchase $17,500 in new equipment during May and $43,000 in new equipment during June; both purchases will be for cash. The company declares dividends of $17,250 each quarter, payable in the first month of the following quarter.

The company’s balance sheet as of March 31 is given below:

Assets:

Cash                                                                                                                   $    77,000

Accounts receivable ($34,580 February sales; $422,240 March sales)                 456,820

Inventory                                                                                                                  112,832

Prepaid insurance                                                                                                      22,500

Property and equipment (net)                                                                                  980,000

                                                                                                                           ————————

Total assets                                                                                                          $  1,649,152

                                                                                                                           ————————-

Liabilities and Stockholders’ Equity

Accounts payable                                                                                                    $ 103,000

Dividends payable                                                                                                        17,250

Common stock                                                                                                            860,000

Retained earnings                                                                                                       668,902

                                                                                                                               ———————-

Total liabilities and stockholders’ equity                                                                   $ 1,649,152

                                                                                                                              ————————

The company maintains a minimum cash balance of $53,000. All borrowing is done at the beginning of a month; any repayments are made at the end of a month.

The company has an agreement with a bank that allows the company to borrow in increments of $1,000 at the beginning of each month. The interest rate on these loans is 1% per month and for simplicity we will assume that interest is not compounded. At the end of the quarter, the company would pay the bank all of the accumulated interest on the loan and as much of the loan as possible (in increments of $1,000), while still retaining at least $53,000 in cash.

Required:

Prepare a master budget for the three-month period ending June 30. Include the following detailed schedules:

1. a. A sales budget, by month and in total.

    b. A schedule of expected cash collections, by month and in total.

    c. A merchandise purchases budget in units and in dollars. Show the budget by month and in total.

    d. A schedule of expected cash disbursements for merchandise purchases, by month and in total.

2. A cash budget. Show the budget by month and in total. Determine any borrowing that would be needed to maintain the minimum cash balance of $53,000.

3. A budgeted income statement for the three-month period ending June 30. Use the contribution        approach.

4. A budgeted balance sheet as of June 30.

700 Word Memo

Read the case below and complete the instructions that follow.

Case

You are a marketing specialist at a media company. Over the past few years, you have been researching how TV viewers use mobile phones and other devices while watching TV. You have found that viewers increasingly expect to engage via mobile devices with TV shows and their audiences while watching TV.

About one month ago, you and your colleagues gave a presentation to executives at your company regarding some of your survey results. The executive team members were generally impressed with the information, but they also seemed skeptical that your company needed to make any major changes. These executives made various statements referring to using mobile devices while watching TV as “largely a fad” or simply “no monetizing.” (ROI) They also expressed concern about making major changes to cater to the youngest viewers (under 25 years old), who they feel are not their most important demographic. However, they were impressed with your presentation enough that they wanted you to dig deeper into the data and come up with some recommendations.

After a month of deeper analysis of your data, you have found even stronger evidence that viewers under 40 use their mobile devices frequently while watching TV. You thought these data helped bolster your argument that younger TV viewers expect an interactive experience while watching TV programs—using mobile devices to interact with TV hosts, actors, and other viewers; to participate in contests and games; and to interact in other creative ways with the programming. With more and more TV viewers recording shows and watching commercial-free later, you thought that adopting an interactive approach to many programs could counteract this trend and get viewers excited about watching programs live. In fact, you think there is currently a great opportunity to develop a new business model that embraces interactive programming.

Now, you will plan the initial steps in creating a follow-up communication to the senior vice presidents in which your objectives are torecommend the company aggressively pursue programming with an interactive component and to suggest pilot-testing interactive features for three shows that are most popular with your 31-40 year old demographic. You know most of these executives are skeptical of major changes to the current business model, but you also expect them to listen objectively to your views.

Note: Scenario reprinted with permission from McGraw-Hill.

Instructions

Write a memo of no more than 700 words (precise & concise) to your supervisor about how you will design a communication for the executive teamsuggesting the company pursue programming with an interactive component and engage in pilot-testing interactive features for three shows that are most popular with the 31- to 40-year-old demographic.

Note: You will not actually create the communicationin this assignment, but will begin the planning process and share with your supervisor how you will approach the communication.

Address the following in your memo:

Start with an intro/purpose of memo.

• Determine what main form of communicationyou will use to communicate your suggestion. Communication forms could include: face to face, email, letter, teleconference, presentation,or any other method you determine is appropriate.• Explain why the form of communication you selected is appropriate based on context, message, and purpose.• Explain how you will establish and build credibility as a communicator.  (must use outside reference here) • In CONCLUSION – short review of what you addressed – and most important concept presented. Recommend an action plan.

Use badsic business memo format (but must cite/reference a credible/published source)

Must use headings, bullets for each main topic

Need to use a version of the above BOLDED words in headings

This is not just a student opinion paper  – But, based on credible/published source(s).

Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

Create a PowerPoint Presentation to discuss the following…

Sgt. Eddie Johns leaned back against the chair in the outpatient orthopedic clinic. His head was killing him! He wasn’t sure which was worse, the “morning after” headache or not being able to sleep at night. At least when he had a few beers under his belt so he could catch a few hours of sleep. It had been like this since he was air evacuated back stateside from Afghanistan after the roadside bomb went off. He was thankful that he had only broken his leg in a couple of places and gotten a bad bump on the head. They called that traumatic brain injury but he didn’t know what that was and really didn’t believe them anyway. He was still thinking just fine. His friend Joe wasn’t so lucky! How was Joe going to learn to walk on those artificial legs? He was still in the hospital in Washington, DC. That was pretty far from his home. Eddie wished he could visit Joe. They had been in the same platoon for 9 months. But, Eddie was glad that he had been able to come back to his own home town for outpatient treatment. It took an hour to get here but at least he could see his girl almost every day. Sure he had moved back in with his mom but it was easier to have someone to help him get around and cook for him. It was a bummer that he couldn’t work right now. He guessed it didn’t matter much since he really didn’t have a job to go back to. He had been replaced at the plant. They said they would find something for him to do once he could get around more easily. Eddie sure hoped the doc would take the pins out of his leg today and give him a clearance to work.

  • Describe the influence of Roy’s Theory in guiding the nurse’s actions in promoting Sgt. Johns adjusted self-concept.
  • From the perspective of the Roy Adaptation Model, why is it important for the nurse to listen to Sgt. Johns’ “story” in his own words and not just base her interactions on information from the chart, fellow colleagues, or his family?
  • Based on Neuman System’s Model, identify at least 4 stressors from the case study. Create a plan of care based on Neuman Systems Model for Sgt. Johns.

What Are the Fundamental Purposes of Business and the Responsibilities of Strategic Leaders?

Milton Friedman, a noted free-market economist, suggested in 1970 that the sole purpose of business is to generate profit for shareholders.
Peter Drucker, a leading management specialist, said during his decades of management consulting, that “the purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.”
Norman Wolfe (2010) wrote that “business is a complex living system that directs the flow of energy, and transforms it into desired results.” (p. 1)

A fundamental basis for successful strategy, whether at the economy level or the company level, is understanding the purpose of an organization. Confusion over the means/ends relationships within a strategic thinking context can lead to devastation at all levels of the organization. In this Discussion you are asked to reflect upon various points of view that relate to the purpose of business, and to defend a point of view that you are assigned

ost a well-written response to support one of the following points of view that your Instructor assigned to you:

  • A: The sole purpose of business is to generate profit for shareholders, as Milton Friedman suggests. The primary responsibility of senior leaders of business is to ensure shareholders receive maximum returns.
  • B: The primary purpose of a business is to create and keep customers. Senior leadership’s primary responsibility is to ensure that a company can achieve its strategic intent and win against competition over the long term.
  • C: The primary purpose of business is to solve people’s problems. The primary responsibility of senior leaders is to create and maintain an environment of meaning and purpose so that the organization’s people can create value for a broad range of stakeholders.

Be sure to make as strong of an argument as you can to support your view, relying on the assigned and other resources you have chosen from the MBA Program Capstone Bibliography or program content, whether or not you agree with the point of view personally.
