1st discussion ANA

A general partnership is a business owned and run by two or more people known as general partners. General partner share responsibilities for the business’s profits, losses and debts, and managing the business day to day (Nykiel, 2017). General partnerships can be risky since both partners carry the same amount of responsibility, if they business gets sued or owes money both partners are held responsible. When forming a general partnership, it is best to create an agreement and provide information on each of the partners rights and responsibilities. On the other hand, forming a general partnership can be easy and inexpensive. According to Nykiel (2017), general partnerships don’t pay taxes as a business, instead each partner gets taxed. General partnerships must file Schedule K-1 for each general partner and file form 1065 to report income, deduction, gains, and losses to the IRS.

C-corporations do not have a limit of shareholders, and each owner/shareholder is taxed separately (What Is a C Corporation? n.d.). Some advantages of the C-Corporation include limited liability, no shareholder limit, perpetual existence, enhanced credibility, and unlimited growth potential. Some disadvantages include double taxation, expensive start-up, regulations and formalities, and no-deduction of corporate losses.

From the information given on this week’s discussion and after considering pros and cons on both general partnerships and c-corporation I think the sisters should start a general partnership. General partnerships seem very easy to form and maintain. The sisters can join their qualities and write an agreement to better understand their responsibilities and rights. C-Corporations seem more difficult to create and can be expensive to start and keep up with.

As of now, since that there are just the two sisters to start the business, a traditional C corporation is not necessary at this moment, because it requires many policies, articles, costs, and regulations as much as registration fees with the Secretary of State in the state of incorporation. Therefore, I would recommend the two sisters – A and B to start a general partnership. It is easy to set up, as a fact, there are not many fees involved, as they don’t need to register with their respective Secretary of State’s office to form the business. Many states recognize general partnerships as soon as business activity begins, thus, if sister “A” brings technical knowledge and contacts with potential customers, while Sister “B” brings the physical facilities to make the product and the necessary money to get the business started, then they can start the general partnership and share responsibilities and obligations, and unlimited personal liability for business debts. They will both need to report their share of profits and losses on their personal income tax return. They don’t need much paperwork to file or enormous business expenses to worry about. All they need is pulling what’s already available to them and work their skills and knowledge to keep the business going. However, if eventually in the future business is starting to be known, it is generating profit as expected, the sisters can expand the partnership where they can hire new employees and solicit more cash from creditors. At this point, they can also take the business to the next level, convert it to a traditional C- Corporation structure. That means, they will still have to file a separate tax return as a business entity but will need to pay corporation tax on any profits earned. This also will convert the two to limited liability and protected them from being liable for the business’s obligations.

Philosophy Discussion 5

  • Describe in detail the key facts of the scientific revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth-centuries and show in what way they can induce a skepticism about knowledge based on sense experience. If we can reduce the sun’s rising in the East and setting in the West to an ‘appearance’ what other as yet unthought-of large-scale illusions could we possibly be the unknowing victims of?

  • Reconstruct in your own words the arguments that Descartes uses in Meditation I to defend skepticism. Are these arguments successful on their own terms (meaning, without subsequent counter-arguments presented by Descartes later on in his text)? Why or why not? [Note: This reconstruction of the arguments should be done based on your reading of the text before doing additional research, which you can do after your initial post, and should serve as a basis for our discussion this week.

  • Explain what the Cogito is in Descartes and how it works. Is it really an argument or is it more like an intuition? How is it linked to the fact that Descartes is ‘meditating’ rather than ‘dialoging’ in this philosophical work (unlike Socrates, for example). If you yourself ‘perform’ the Cogito do you find that it works for you? Why or why not?

  • How does Descartes define his two substances (the ones that make him an ontological dualist)? What arguments does he use to show that these are really very different from one-another, and yet apparently work together in some fashion? Is his explanation for such interaction credible or not? Why or why not? Be as specific as you can.

2.  In addition, find the beta of 3 different companies within the same industry as your company (Group Project: The Procter and Gamble Company).

3.  Explain to your classmates what beta means and how it can be used for managerial and/or investment decision

4.  Why do you think the beta of your company (individual project) and those of the 3 companies you found are different from each other? Provide as much information as you can and be specific.

Part 2: Capital Budgeting

Before you respond to Part 2 of discussion 6 review the following information on Capital Budgeting Techniques

Capital Budgeting Decision Methods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfZ6lznPf2U)

CAPITAL BUDGETING (PRINCIPLES & TECHNIQUES) (https://www.scribd.com/doc/37253036/Capital-Budgeting-Principles-Techniques)

To avoid damaging its market value, each company must use the correct discount rate to evaluate its projects. Review and discuss the following:

• Compare and contrast the internal rate of return approach to the net present value approach. Which is better? Support your answer with well-reasoned arguments and examples.

• Is the ultimate goal of most companies–maximizing the wealth of the owners for whom the firm is being operated–ethical? Why or why not?

• Why might ethical companies benefit from a lower cost of capital than less ethical companies?

  • Summarize what the Globe says about how the holidays are celebrated in each country in detail.
4.My Name Is
  • Summarize the entire essay AND do you agree with the author when she says it is imperative to not only know about the other culture, but to also be motivated to put that knowledge to use? Explain
5.World of Differences

With its generally nuclear family structure (i.e., a household consisting of a man, a woman, and their children), American culture clearly departs from cultures with a multi-generational family structure. For example, most Asian cultures are characterized by a strong emphasis on “filial piety” — the virtually unlimited obligations that children feel toward their parents. In most Asian cultures, it is expected that children will care for their parents as long as the parents are alive — and this care is expected to include financial, residential, dietary and custodial responsibilities. Not to “take care” of ones parents is disrespectful.

  • Give another example of the differences in how parents and children interact from the video.

If there is a title, then I expect you to click on the title and read the corresponding document about the image and phrase your answer in a way that demonstrates your comprehension of this document as it relates to the theory in the text. Watch the Tibet video located in this folder (Module 1 – Cultural Differences). Summarize what is said in the video about the Tibetan culture as portrayed in the video clip. Summarize the video, not what Google says about Tibet.

8.Movie Clip

You have just viewed a scene from “The Last Samurai” starring Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise’s character (Nathan Algren) is a captain in the US army in 1876. He is asked to go to Japan and train Japanese soldiers to use modern weapons. He is captured in battle and lives in a small remote village in the mountains of Japan. Here he is exposed to the traditions of the samurai (such as loyalty to one’s master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior).

After many months of questioning the “culture” of his captures and saying such things as “no wonder you always look angry, you’re angry because they make you wear a dress” (referring to the kimono) Tom finally embraces this culture as exemplified in the scene.

  • Take a look at the section in your text called Cultural Identity–explain what this is.
  • Explain why one’s cultural identity changes with life experiences and relate it to this scene AND define what Cultural Identity is according to the text.

9.Thailand

John had recently been assigned to his agency’s Bangkok office. As first he was very impressed with the willingness shown by the people with whom he worked to carry out the program he was trying to implement. Soon, however, he discovered that his deadlines were not being met; people agreed to do something but didn’t always show up, materials would disappear from the workrooms but no one seemed inclined to find out what had happened to them. He was becoming increasingly frustrated and angry and was about ready to issue an ultimatum: “Shape up or ship out!” But his Thai supervisors didn’t seem to be at all upset, and kept saying to him, “Mai pen rai” which means “It doesn’t really matter” . . . “don’t worry about it.”

  • What are Cultural Patterns according to the text—define.
  • How does this scenario relate to what the text says about Cultural Patterns?

Hint to help you

In the Thai culture, one of the hardest things to understand and reconcile is the dual attitude of “group harmony,” an emphasis on preserving the good feelings of everyone at all costs (e.g., telling you what they think you want to hear even if it stretches the truth) and a sense of “noninvolvement” which says that a persons actions are no one else’s concern. (The word Thai means “free”; and although it refers to national independence, it is a characteristic of the individual as well.) Thus, Thais are not inclined to accept discipline or regimentation, but at the same time Thais place great value on keeping relationships pleasant with co-workers.

This attitude is reflected in the expression “mai pen rai” which, according to one scholar, signifies “the Thai desire to keep relationships peaceful and on an even keel, to shrug off the little frustrations and disagreements of life & to prevent anger.”

A related value in the Thai way of life is the concept of sanuke, which means, “to enjoy oneself.” Life is meant to be enjoyment. And since Buddhism teaches them to accept their fate, when faced with a problem they tend to laugh it off mai pen rai.

John may want to first acknowledge and try to understand this cultural difference that getting the job done on time, within budget, etc., is not of the same importance to Thais as to Westerners in general, Americans in particular and then try to arrive at a solution which will be acceptable to both of them. His employees may wish to teach John about Thai culture and why they are accustomed to certain work habits.

10.Deaf Culture

  • Would you consider two Americans communicating to be intercultural communication (assuming one of the Americans is hearing and the other is deaf)? Explain your rationale AND what the book says intercultural communication is.

W 7 6238 Discussion 2 Response

A recent difficult decision I have made involves work and family and trying to balance the two. As a public speaker, I was asked to attend a fundraiser and speak at it for the closing ceremony, which I was absolutely interested in doing. However, the dates that were decided fall on my five-year wedding anniversary and my son’s second birthday (they are one right after the other). As someone who is growing her public speaking career, it is important that I am available for as many opportunities as possible and that I get my voice heard. As a wife and mother, my family’s life events also hold high importance to me and considering missing them is painful.

My options included going to the event and celebrating my family’s milestones on alternative days or turning down the event and being at home for these milestones on their respective days. Weber and Johnson (2009) discuss how characteristic of the decision maker can affect how they go about making their decision, noting such characteristics as gender, age, cognitive traits/style, age, personality, and health. In discussing gender, they note that women can be more risk-averse and they perceive decisions to be higher risk when they lead to more emotional discomfort (Weber & Johnson, 2009). Weber and Johnson (2009) also note that women’s risk aversion is not biological but instead comes from a place of lower social standing in society, and the belief of perceived risk being larger in all areas except for social risk.

As a career focused woman and working mother, I am constantly trying to balance this belief of risk versus reward with decisions that affect my family, and I often find that how I perceive the potential consequences are quite different than how my husband does when we discuss options.

Weber and Johnson (2009) further discuss that when making decisions, elements that affect our decisions are the information we have (including internal and external information and information that we must seek), the evaluation of this information through cognitive and affective processes, and our internal state including beliefs, values, goals, and prior experiences (p. 77). Not only would my husband’s internal state be different from mine, but how he evaluates the information provided will also be different, influenced by his gender, upbringing, and so on.

As decision making continues to be studied, researchers are becoming more interested in the process of decision making. This has resulted in a better understanding of what can impede decision making. Two common impediments to decision making include heuristics and cognitive biases (Cherry, 2020).

Heuristics are judgements based on previously garnered information that allow for quick decisions to be made (Cherry, 2020). Two types of heuristics are representative heuristics (judging the likelihood of an outcome based on a prototype we already have of that outcome) and availability heuristic (judging the likelihood of an event based on how quickly you can pull up other, similar events) (Cherry, 2020).

Secondly, cognitive biases can distort decision making (Cherry, 2021). Cognitive biases come in many forms and they are a result of limited attention plus heuristics, or mental shortcuts, and their purpose is to help speed along decision making (Cherry, 2021). Though biases influence decision making, it does not only result in negative influence. Most importantly, one must be well informed about potential biases and their influence over thoughts and decisions.

In my situation, I have biases involving both women in the workplace and the negative effect of them taking time for their family, as well as the overrepresentation of women sacrificing for families. To make my decision, I had to sift through the heuristics, cognitive biases and distortions, and try to determine which choice held the best reward for the risk.

Discussion: Budget, Budget Narrative, & Sustainability Plan

The budget is a crucial piece in the logical progression of developing your proposal. Look back at the other key components—needs statement, objectives, goals, methodology, and evaluation—and consider how these pieces must be represented in and supported by the budget. One can see why a funding reviewer might begin by looking at a budget. It should fully, clearly, and succinctly depict the story of the project. The budget narrative expands upon the line items of a budget, offering further explanation of costs and needs, as appropriate.

A sustainability plan explains to funders how you will continue a project after funding has been exhausted. Not only does this plan demonstrate a proactive stance toward your project, but it also provides a funder assurance that its interests will be served beyond the project timeframe.

In preparation for this Discussion, consider the components of your project that you have determined to this point. Review this module’s Learning Resources that focus on the budget, budget narrative, and sustainability plan. Note: You may select one of the two budget formats for your Discussion post: the budget example on pp. 162–163 or use the Sample Budget Worksheet on p. 328 as a guide to develop your budget.

By Day 3 of Week 5

Post the following to the Discussion board:

  • Your Budget, Budget Narrative, and Sustainability Plan. Include a brief description of your project to provide context to your colleagues.

Political Instability-Challenges and Opportunities

Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) are essential as they fulfill a purpose that is traditionally addressed by a government (Balteanu & Marcu, 2014).  In order for an NGO to be impactful and serve its purpose, it will require support and involvement from those it has been organized to help, as well as maintain financial and management autonomy, devoid of the governmental influence (Johnson & Stoskopf, 2010).  Political and social instability has made it difficult for NGO’s to fulfill their purpose to meet the needs of the communities they have pin pointed as their focus (Balteanu & Marcu).  During unrest experienced by many countries, residents who need shelter, food, and medical care, benefit from what NGO’s to provide (Balteanu & Marcu).  Without the government, military, or religious backing of the NGO’s purpose, the NGO will not be able to fulfill it’s intent (Balteanu & Marcu).

Resident of unstable regions through out the world, are without food, shelter, and medical care due to the preoccupation with control, whether through the government, military, or religious factions.  The unstable governments within these regions are either unwilling or unable to care for the needs of their citizens or have taken away their ability to care for themselves.  NGO’s have the ability to provide for the needs of the people and help them sustain, if allowed.

In general, what is the impact of political and social instability on non-government organizations?

Assignment: Policy/Regulation Fact Sheet

As a professional nurse, you are expected to apply your expertise to patient care. On occasion, you will also be expected to share that expertise.

With evolving technology and continuous changes to regulations designed to keep up these changes, there is usually a need to share information and expertise to inform colleagues, leadership, patients, and other stakeholders.

In this Assignment, you will study a recent nursing informatics-related healthcare policy, and you will share the relevant details via a fact sheet designed to inform and educate.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources on healthcare policy and regulatory/legislative topics related to health and nursing informatics.
  • Consider the role of the nurse informaticist in relation to a healthcare organization’s compliance with various policies and regulations, such as the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA).
  • Research and select one health or nursing informatics policy (within the past 5 years) or regulation for further study.

The Assignment: (  not including the title and reference page)

Create a  fact sheet that your healthcare organization could hypothetically use to explain the health or nursing informatics policy/regulation you selected. Your fact sheet should address the following:

  • Briefly and generally explain the policy or regulation you selected.
  • Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on system implementation.
  • Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on clinical care, patient/provider interactions, and workflow.
  • Highlight organizational policies and procedures that are/will be in place at your healthcare organization to address the policy or regulation you selected. Be specific.
  • Use APA format and include a title page, in-text citations, and reference page.
  • Use the Safe Assign Drafts to check your match percentage before submitting your work.
