Applying Sociology – Discussion Forum 1

Read  the directions provided below then post and reply to the discussion  prompt (400 words or more for each entry and TWO Replies). Discussion  first entries are due on a Monday and the replies are due no later than  the subsequent Friday.

Discussion Topic:

In  Chapter 3 of your textbook, various methodological techniques for  studying the social world are discussed. A key aspect of sociological  research is utilizing the power of observation. Applying what you have  learned about sociological research: First, discuss the role of  observational research as a key methodology for studying society.  Second, utilizing nonparticipant observation, participant observation,  ethnography or netnography observe and record a detailed account of a  social context or virtual social context that you are no stranger to  (think local coffee shop, shopping mall, church or night club, a blog,  twitter feed, or Instagram) from a sociological perspective. Be careful  to be objective and ethically neutral. Do not include judgments or  opinions of behaviors but rather, as best as possible, systematic  observations. Third, discuss how a common-sense view of that social  setting may look different from a sociological one. Does looking through  the lens of sociological research methodology transform how that social  space may be viewed. Substantiate your views. Fourth and finally, post a  response to another classmate’s posting discussing your thoughts in a  respectful and thoughtful manner. What stood out to you about their  observations and the behaviors occurring?

General Requirement(s):

Discussion postings are worth 15 percent of your total grade.

  • You are required to  first post a response to the discussion board prompt and it must be a  minimum of 400 words. Citations, titles, copying questions, references,  and other identifying information does not count toward word count.
  • You are required to use proper grammar and spelling. When using other sources, citations using APA style are required.
  • Direct quotes are  not permitted in discussion posting, therefore you must paraphrase and  cite. In addition, you must post a discussion response to a student’s  discussion posting.
  • When responding to a  classmate to a classmate, your response needs to be pertinent and of  substance. Stating that you agree or disagree is not sufficient. You  must substantiate your responses.
  • Above all, they must  be respectful and worthy of intellectual honesty, sincerity, and  humility. Responses must be a minimum of 150 words as well.

Short-Term Budgeting

Good cash management is impossible without an analysis of the cash collections and cash disbursements of a company. Cash budgets provide a gauge for determining credit, disbursement, and discount policies. Cash budgets are effective control devices for monitoring cash and determining financing requirements.

Cash budgets are essential to all small businesses. In this assignment, you are required to do the following:

  • Develop a spreadsheet with a cash budget with lagging collections
  • Determine the net cash flows for the year
  • Forecast the cumulative dollar amount of the external financing required for the year

You are also required to prepare a 3-page analysis of the results of your cash budget.

Middletown Construction, Inc. has estimated the following sales forecast over the next 12 months (they close in the winter):

Thread: Lady Bird–Part One

Before participating in this discussion board, please make sure you’ve re-watched the first third of Lady Bird while taking detailed notes. In addition, you will want to remind yourself of our discussion board standards by reviewing the discussion board rubric download. And, finally, it should go without saying that we are required to be respectful and courteous at all times.

Here’s what I want you to do in your initial post: In at least a full paragraph (minimum five sentences), explain briefly what you think is interesting, important, and meaningful. You don’t have to have all of the answers. Again: consult your notes. We do NOT want a review (an evaluation of whether or not you like the movie) or summary: we want you to contribute specific observations that we can use to begin to understand how this movie works to construct meaning. Do NOT discuss all of the assigned section of the film: Choose specific scenes sequences and shots. Provide details.

Make sure your post is up by the posted due date for the assignment.

Then, after you’ve posted, you’ll be able to see your classmates’ posts.  Respond to two of them–talk about, in at least a few sentences, whether you see what they see in the film.  Where are your interpretations similar?  Different?  Again: be specific and detailed.

Responses need to be submitted by the following due date (6/15).

Explanatory Synthesis

Increased crime during the pandemic

I choose to write about the increased violence crimes during the pandemic. Since the pandemic started a lot of people’s everyday life has changed like we have never seen before. A lot of people were stuck in the house and couldn’t go to work, school, or just out doing normal day to day activities. They all had to do almost everything virtual. A lot of people also lost their jobs because many companies were forced to lay off workers in order to prevent financial bankruptcy, while other establishments, such as restaurants and movie theaters, were simply not open for business. New York state alone had over a million unemployment cases. With that being said I felt as well as statistics shows that the crime rate has risen because people didn’t have a way to make money or ends meet, plus people were bored in the house and couldn’t go anywhere, which can cause a lot of stress, depression and anxiety on a person. Studies shows that in New York city alone, there were 172 shootings by April 4th, 2020, which was an increased of 11.7% from 2019 and 18% from 2018. Also, I felt like the hate crime among Asian people were also on the rise because a lot of people believed that the Coronavirus Disease was created in Wuhan, China and began rapidly spreading around the world, so many people targeted innocent Asian people for no reason.

Topic 3 DQ 2

Chapter 2 of the textbook discusses two scenarios in which evidence may not meet some audience’s expectations. In the first scenario, two scientific studies are in conflict with each other In the second scenario, a child psychiatrist uses stories from his patients rather than statistics as evidence. Each case poses a problem regarding the use of evidence: We sometimes have difficulty reconciling conflicting pieces of evidence, and we are reluctant to see stories, rather than statistics, as valid evidence. In the essay that you are writing right now, what kinds of evidence have you found?  In what way might it meet an audience’s expectations? Name the audience, discuss how it may meet–or not meet–the audience’s expectations, and explain why. Later in the week, compare your observations about evidence with those of your classmates.

Scenario 1The results of two scientific studies are in conflict with each other. In the first study, McAuley, Hopke, Zhao, and Babaian (2012) found “no apparent risk to human health from e-cigarette emissions” after taking into account the particular compounds found in e-cigarette vapor that the study measured (p. 850). In the second study, researchers suggested that the pollutants contained in e-cigarette vapor “could be of health concern for users and secondhand smokers” (Schober et al., 2014, p. 628). Before using these studies in a research paper, a writer would do well to answer questions like the following: What were the methodologies for both studies? Did researchers measure the same pollutants in each study? Why else might discrepancies between the two studies exist?

Scenario 2In a published academic journal article, child psychiatrist Andres Martin (2000) used qualitative evidence to convince his fellow psychiatrists to see tattoos as an opportunity to get to know their teenaged patients, rather than as an opportunity to assess the problems they are facing. Martin’s evidence contained no numbers—no statistics, no dollar amounts, and no measurable data. Rather, he used descriptions of two teenage boys, who were his patients at the time, and their descriptions of the tattoos they either had or were planning to get.

Essay NC

To answer these topics completely, it takes a minimum of 350 words. A complete thoughtful answer is more important than word count.

Topics for your Essay, Choose one

Topic A: You try to live strictly by the moral rules contained in your religion’s moral code. The two most important rules are “Be merciful” (don’t give people what they deserve) and “Be just” (give people exactly what they deserve). Now suppose a man is arrested for stealing food from your house, and the police leave it up to you whether he should be prosecuted for his crime or set free. Should you be merciful and set him free, or be just and make sure he is appropriately punished? How do you resolve this conflict of rules? Can your moral code resolve it? To what moral principles or theories do you appeal?

Topic B: Why do you think people are tempted to use the straw man fallacy in disagreements on moral issues? How do you feel when someone uses this fallacy against you? To demonstrate your understanding and to teach the idea to the rest of the class, provide a relevant real-life example of the logical mistake. (You MAY use an outside source to help you present your example; be sure to summarize or paraphrase, cite, and use announcing verbs.) Choose carefully—consider whether your example does a good job of illustrating a Straw Man. Compare it to similar fallacies, and show why your example is a Straw Man rather than another fallacy like an Appeal to the Person. Your discussion of your example should be detailed so that readers can evaluate the fallacy. Argue the case for why your example is an example of Straw Man.

The Health Problem – Health Policy

Identify and select a health problem in the US Health Care sector from the list below.  Prepare a summary document using the required table format shown below. Note a maximum of five (5) students may select the same topic. In Week One, you need to sign up for a topic in the Assignment One Topic Selection folder. Unless the professor reaches out to you directly, your chosen topic is approved. The table should be single spaced and a maximum of two and a half (2.5) pages. Also include a cover page and a reference page in APA Format (these do not count toward the page limit). Except in the case of titles, use complete sentences, i.e. write using narrative format. No more than 15% of direct quotes or paraphrasing are permitted in the document. Review the bolded text in the Class Guidelines section of the syllabus above for formatting requirements. The topics are as follows:

  1. Tobacco dependency threatens the health of many Americans and it poses a preventable burden to the health care system.
  2. It is not unusual for patients in US hospitals to acquire preventable diseases, infections and conditions during their stay in the hospital.
  3. A growing pool of patients is unable to read and write in the English language. Language is a barrier to effective care delivery as well as patient compliance.
  4. Elderly and disabled patients with multiple medications are at risk of medication interactions and potential drug safety concerns.
  5. Veterans may suffer from service-related injuries. Both physical and mental health are concerns for the Veteran’s Administration (VA).
  6. Health care providers are scarce in certain low-income and rural under-served areas in the US, including Native American territories.
  7. Disadvantaged patients may seek care in emergency rooms because they have nowhere else to receive services.
  8. Disadvantaged children often do not have health insurance and do not receive the preventive care (such as vaccines and well-baby check-ups) that can help avoid long-term health problems.

SPSS 0utputs and 500–1,000-word analysis When computing descriptive statistics, there are times when the researcher needs to organize the data into two or more groups to compare the statistics concerning the groups. Although there are many ways to separate the data in SPSS, the Explore command is an easy method to separate the data and make common calculations. For more information about the Explore feature, review Section 21.4 in your Green & Salkind text.Use the Explore command to compare the income levels (rincdol) for both genders (sex). Go to the Resources area of the class to download the files that you will need to complete your assignments each week. Open gss.sav in SPSS, and complete the following calculations to determine the differences in the income level between males and females.Compute the following for each group:

  1. Mean
  2. Median
  3. Quartiles
  4. Range
  5. Variance
  6. Standard deviation
  7. Skewness
  8. Kurtosis

The Explore command will also produce several different types of plots. Click on the Plots button, and create the following plots for each group:

  1. Histograms (include the normal curve on the histogram)
  2. Box plots
  3. Stem-and-leaf plots

Use the calculations and plots to answer the following questions. When discussing a calculation, include the value in the text to bolster your analysis.

  1. What can you determine from the measures of skewness and kurtosis relative to a normal curve?
  2. What are the mean and median?
  3. Does the mean or median seem better to represent the scores? How have extreme scores impacted these values?

Submit your output from all SPSS analysis as an SPSS output file and your Word document.
