Psychology of Consulting & Coaching

Oftentimes, the words coaching and mentoring are interspersed in the literature. Coaching of employees can be beneficial to an organization’s success. Sometimes, employees do not want to be coached. This assignment will give you the opportunity revise your earlier work on virtual teams and to look at the competencies required of a coach and the challenges that coaches may experience.

General guidelines

  • Refer to your submission of the Topic 2 assignment “Virtual Teams” and any instructor feedback on that assignment. (ATTACHED)
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments.
  • Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral level writing. The Manual contains essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.
  • Include a minimum of seven scholarly topic-relevant sources (majority of articles should be published within past 5 years)
  • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Directions

Part 1

Present a revised version (2,250-2,800 words total) of the paper “Virtual Teams” that makes improvements in the caliber of the writing and incorporates instructor feedback regarding content and writing. Include the following in your submission:

  1. A reflection (250-300 words) that provides a bulleted list of the changes you made to the paper and discusses your revision process including how you incorporated your instructor’s feedback into the revised version. Similar to an abstract, this section will receive its own page following the title page and preceding the introduction to the paper.
  2. The revised paper that incorporates instructor feedback; clarifies the thesis statement and solidifies supporting arguments; edits for grammar, spelling, and punctuation; adjusts word choice to display professional and scholarly language; and adjusts sentence structure for improved readability.

Part 2

Write an additional 2,000-2,500 words in which you discuss coaching and how to handle leaders who do not want coaching. Include the following in your paper:

  1. A research-based discussion of and rationale for needed competencies of a leadership coach.
  2. A research-based discussion of three types of difficult leaders and how you would handle the challenges of coaching them.
  3. A research-based discussion of how a leader’s style influences how challenges are handled.
  4. A research-based discussion of how the coaching of a difficult leader might occur in a virtual environment.

Assignment 1:  Understanding Your Values

Due week 3 and worth 100 points.

“If you’re going to build a great career, you had better have a strong foundation. It all comes back to the priorities and the values that you have in life. – Coach Gibbs

Understanding Your Values Worksheet

PART 1 IDENTIFY YOUR VALUES & GROUPS OF INFLUENCE

In the article What Self-Awareness Really Is (And How to Cultivate It) author Tasha Eurich states that “Research suggests that when we see ourselves clearly, we are more confident and more creative. We make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively.” This worksheet will help you do just that.

In the table below, each row represents a group (past or present) that has influenced your values. Examples of these groups are your family, church, sports teams, profession, groups sharing common interests, etc. Select five of these groups and list them in the first column of the table.

For each of the groups, identify the following:

1. Three (3) positive behaviors that were learned and/or encouraged by the group. For example your teacher would always expect that you were on time or that you were assertive during class presentations.2. Three (3) values that you learned from the group. For example someone could have learned from a church group to be compassionate or to speak up when one sees injustices.a. Choose your values from the list provided in the Your Values Matter table. Scroll to the end of this assignment to find this table.

GROUP NAME

3 POSITIVE BEHAVIORS

3 VALUES LEARNED

Ex: Church

Volunteering, Working on a team, Being on time

Accountability, respect, teamwork

(choose from the Your Values Matter table below)

(Type Group 1 here)

(Type Group 2 here)

(Type Group 3 here)

(Type Group 4 here)

(Type Group 5 here)

PART 2: RANK YOUR VALUES

How important is each value in your life? Using the “Understanding Your Values” table, choose 10 of your values and put each value in priority order – #1 matters most, #10 matters least. Be HONEST! It doesn’t matter how someone else would rank these values; it only matters how important they are to you! Remember, this is about SELF-awareness. Your goal is to identify the things that matter most to YOU!

In the article How to Live With Purpose, Identify Your Values and Improve Your Leadership, author Ann Loehr explains how your values give you a sense of purpose. The exercise below will help you focus on those values. Please complete the following in the table below:

1. List the values according to what matters most to you. 2. Provide a brief definition of what that values means to you in your own words. 3. Write a short sentence about the meaning of each value in the “why does this matter to me” column. (Ex: If “friendship” is one of your higher values, you might understand it [and yourself!] better by identifying WHYfriendship is such a high priority for you.)

VALUES

(most important to least important)

DEFINITION

(what does it mean to me?)

WHY?

(why does this value matter to me?)

Ex: Friendship

A special bond/connection between myself and another person.

Friends are valuable to me because we provide each other with support during the positive and difficult times in our lives. Friends also provide companionship.

Be sure to address the following:

1. How has this activity provided insight into the effect your groups of influence have on your personal values?  Were you aware of the relationship between the two before doing this activity? Were you surprised by the amount of influence each group has? Explain why or why not.

2. Why is self-awareness so important in the journey to finding your purpose?

3. How did you determine your top three (3) values overall? Was it difficult to narrow it down? Explain your reasoning.

Literacy Toolkit 1: Phonics and Word Recognition

There are various aspects of literacy and it is important to begin developing instructional strategies to introduce these literacy concepts. It is crucial to examine multiple instructional and differentiation strategies in order to implement standards-based concepts related to phonics and word recognition.

Part 1: Phonics and Word Recognition Chart

Using the “Literacy Toolkit 1: Phonics and Word Recognition” template, choose a K-3 grade level and identify three standards related to phonics and word recognition.

For each standard chosen:

  • Identify an aligned instructional strategy.
  • Describe how you would differentiate the strategy to accommodate student needs.
  • Identify materials, including digital tools and resources needed to create relevant learning experiences and promote student learning.

Part 2: Phonics and Word Recognition Reflection

Using the “Literacy Toolkit 1: Phonics and Word Recognition” template, summarize and reflect, in 250-500 words, on the strategies and aligned differentiation you would use to inform your instruction of phonics and word recognition standards. How do the materials, including digital tools and resources, chosen to implement your strategies address the various needs and provide equitable access to all students? Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

Submit your “Literacy Toolkit 1: Phonics and Word Recognition” template and reflection as one deliverable.

According to the Council on Social Work Education, Competency 4: Engage In Practice-informed Research and Research-informed Practice:

Social workers understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and their respective roles in advancing a science of social work and in evaluating their practice. Social workers know the principles of logic, scientific inquiry, and culturally informed and ethical approaches to building knowledge. Social workers understand that evidence that informs practice derives from multi-disciplinary sources and multiple ways of knowing. They also understand the processes for translating research findings into effective practice. Social workers:

  • Use practice experience and theory to inform scientific inquiry and research;
  • Apply critical thinking to engage in analysis of quantitative and qualitative research methods and research findings; and
  • Use and translate research evidence to inform and improve practice, policy, and service delivery.

This assignment is intended to help students demonstrate the behavioral components of this competency in their field education.

To Prepare: Meet with your Field Instructor. During the meeting, you are expected to assess the population(s) served by the agency. After meeting with the Field Instructor, conduct extensive research regarding the agency’s client population. You will be expected to use at least 5 peer-reviewed resources. The purpose of the research is to discover “evidenced based practices” that are most effective while working with clients served within the population. If the agency serves more than one population, select one sub-population within the agency to conduct the review.

The Assignment: Create a 10-12 slide PowerPoint Presentation, where you will explain the following:

  1. Population researched
  2. Best evidenced based practices modalities used to engage the population
  3. Current modalities used in the agency
  4. Briefly discuss and suggest to methods of implementing evidence-based practices in the agency
  5. Analyze the findings from the articles you researched

The Best Healthcare Delivery Model

Competency

Compare and contrast the major characteristics of the U. S. healthcare delivery system with the systems of other developed countries.

Student Success Criteria

View the grading rubric for this deliverable by selecting the “This item is graded with a rubric” link, which is located in the Details & Information pane.

Scenario

You are the new Director of the International Relations Division of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and have been tasked with researching and creating a draft healthcare delivery model for the U.S. As you work with your team, you discover that other developed nations have very interesting components that make up their healthcare systems. Before you complete a proposed U.S. healthcare delivery model that can be viewed as sustainable and crafted strictly for the U.S. given the healthcare climate and rules and government, you thought you should first compose an ideal healthcare delivery system composed of the best components from the world’s developed nations, including the United States.

The United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Global Affairs is the diplomatic voice of the Department of Health and Human Services that fosters critical global relationships, coordinate international engagement across HHS and the U.S. government, and provide leadership and expertise in global health diplomacy and policy to contribute to a safer, healthier world (https://www.hhs.gov/about/agencies/oga/index.html)

Instructions

Create a proposed healthcare delivery model based on a combination of developed nations’ health systems (including the U.S.) using the best parts of each: Outcomes, costs, and processes. The proposed model should include a full report that has the following elements:

  • A detailed definition of healthcare in the U.S. under this proposed model.
  • A SWOT analysis per country (minimum of 5 countries) from around the world. One country from each quadrant of the world is required (north, south, east, and west) and one country must be the U.S.
  • Each country should have a minimum of two strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats regarding their national healthcare systems’ outcomes, costs, and processes.
  • For example, Country 1: two strengths on the outcomes, two weaknesses on the outcomes, two opportunities on the outcomes, two threats on the outcomes. Two strengths on the costs, two weaknesses on the costs, two opportunities on the costs, two threats on the costs. Two strengths on the processes, two weaknesses on the processes, two opportunities on the processes, two threats on the processes.
  • A comparison chart of the costs of healthcare in the U.S. with the costs of healthcare in other developed nations.
  • A comparison chart of the U.S. health outcomes to the health outcomes of the other developed nations.
  • Recommend strategies you believe would be best to use in a healthcare delivery model for the U.S. only using the best parts of models from other developed nations.

The report should include two pages for each country, as well as a cover page and reference page.

Resistance is a natural emotional response when someone is trying to make a point or with change. This can come when trying to solve problems, or enact change in an organization. A key element in dealing with resistance is to not compete with the individual.  When emotions are involved, you do not want to push your own narrative too hard. I would seek to understand the reason for the resistance, and the specifics driving the concern. This is done by actively listening to the individual, and letting them express what they believe needs to be said/heard. Listen for repeated phrases, from yourself, and pay attention to your own body language (Block, 2011). Name the resistance by making a statement to address where the resistance is coming from (Block, 2011). It is also important to note that taking things personally during this time will only create more resistance. The discovery model for problem solving details how to keep the conversation moving forward by, presenting the problem, redefining the problem, address how the problem is being managed, any technical or business problems, and follow on recommendations (Block, 2011).

Review of Current Healthcare Issues

Review of Current Healthcare Issues

If you were to ask 10 people what they believe to be the most significant issue facing healthcare today, you might get 10 different answers. Escalating costs? Regulation? Technology disruption?

These and many other topics are worthy of discussion. Not surprisingly, much has been said in the research, within the profession, and in the news about these topics. Whether they are issues of finance, quality, workload, or outcomes, there is no shortage of changes to be addressed.

In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

To Prepare: 1 Page only discussion with 3 References:

  • Review the Resources and select one current national healthcare issue/stressor to focus on.
  • Reflect on the current national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and think about how this issue/stressor may be addressed in your work setting.

Post a description of the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for analysis, and explain how the healthcare issue/stressor may impact your work setting. Then, describe how your health system work setting has responded to the healthcare issue/stressor, including a description of what changes may have been implemented. Be specific and provide examples.
