ART 100 – Written Assignment 1

For this question, you’ll be thinking about some of the terms that we’ve started to discuss – color, line, pattern, shape, etc. – through an ‘art assignment’. You have three options to explore these concepts. Do not worry too much about needing artistic skill or expensive materials to do this project. This project is more about challenging you to engage creatively with the concepts we’ve been studying. You may need to try a few times to get the work right, so don’t be afraid to experiment and test out ideas to see which works the best.

This assignment serves two purposes as it both  and serves as a chance to test out uploading a document to Canvas and TurnItIn. TurnItIn is a plagiarism checker that will be used for various assignments in the future (something you’ll be asked to do with the museum report and with other written assignments). While I don’t at all think you’ll plagiarize this assignment, this is instead to give you familiarity with the system before you use it later in the course.

**Only myself and our SIA, Amanda, will be able to see your work and read your text.**

  1. Choose one of the three options and follow the directions in the video to create your artwork. Make sure to scroll down and watch the highlights video (if available) and check the examples of other people doing this same prompt.
  2. Include image(s) of what you created  *you do not need to hashtag this work or upload to social media*
    • You can attach these or add them into the document where you type up your response.
  3. Write a 300 word or more reflective response to the questions listed for your option and upload it as a Word Doc or PDF. Remember, these are not made public.

Extra Credit: You may include a photo of yourself (selfies are ok!) in your document for me to get to know everyone in the course a bit better. I’ll give you 2 points of extra credit in this assignment for including this photo and 1 point of extra credit in this assignment for having a clear profile image of face. These don’t have to be the same photo either. If there are privacy issues that prevent you from having an image of your face as your profile picture, please let me know and update it with an image of some kind. If you opt to not complete this assignment and want to still submit the extra credit, please email it to me by Sunday.

Option #1: Paper Weavings – Pattern, Color, and Order

http://www.theartassignment.com/assignments//paper-weavings

Include an image of your weaving.

Explain why you created what you did for this project – why did you choose the paper, color, and design that you did? How was the design on the paper, its color, and/or the end pattern significant to you?  As the video mentions, this project looks simple but yet has complex meaning. What was surprising about this assignment for you? What did it help you learn about pattern, order, color, and/or abstraction?

Option #2: Self Shape – Shape, Line, and Color

http://www.theartassignment.com/assignments/self-shape

Include an image of your self shape.

Explain why you created what you did for this project – what was significant about the shape/design and material that you created it with? How did it represent you? As the video mentions, we often use visuals to represent us that are already created. How did creating something from scratch challenge you? What was surprising about this assignment for you? What did it help you learn about shape, line, and color?

Option #3: Whitescapes – Color and Light

http://www.theartassignment.com/assignments/whitescapes

Include the two images of your two color/light comparisons.

Explain why you picked the two white objects you did and what happened to their color when you placed them together. How would you describe that new color? What happened when the lighting changed and how would you describe the objects’ color under this new light? As the video mentions, this project looks simple but yet reveals a lot about the subtleties of color and how subjective it is. It also points to how words are limiting, carry unacknowledged meanings, and often simply constructs. What was surprising about this assignment for you? What did it help you learn about color and light?

The following content is partner provided

the prewriting paper

The assignment is divided into two parts: the prewriting paper (Part 1) due this week, and the essay (Part 2) due in Week 5.

Overview

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view?

This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the “Believing Game.” The Believing Game is about making the effort to “believe,” or at least consider, the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

Instructions

In the Week 2 Discussion, you examined the biases discussed in Chapter 2 of the webtext and reviewed one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues. You may use the same topic from this discussion or find another:

Select one of the topics from Pros & Cons of Controversial Issues, state your position on the issue, and identify three premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section—whichever section opposes your position.

For the three premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:

What’s interesting or helpful in this view?

What would I notice if I believed this view?

In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?

Read the excerpt about critical thinking processes: The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful [PDF].

Engage in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.

Address the main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.

Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

This prewriting assignment has no page requirement.

There is no requirement at this time to include references in the assignment

Discuss the premises related to a position on a given issue.

Strategic Visioning With Stakeholders

  • Prepare a 10-20 slide presentation of the strategic plan you developed in Assessment 2, to be delivered to key stakeholders at a strategic visioning session.
    Introduction
The implementation and success of a strategic plan depends on the support of key stakeholders. This in turn depends on your ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with decision makers and to sell your vision of the future. You must also be able to lead the initiative and sustain strategic direction. This assessment provides you with an opportunity to showcase your strategic thinking and exercise the communication skills necessary to move your strategic plan forward toward implementation.
Note: In this assessment, you will develop a presentation to stakeholders for the strategic plan you developed in Assessment 2.
    Preparation
Your strategic plan has been reviewed, and you have been asked to present your plan—including operational recommendations and strategic control mechanisms—at a strategic visioning session with key stakeholders (senior leaders if your plan is organization-wide, community leaders if your plan is for a community health project, or the nurse manager of a specific department or team). This session is the next step in moving your plan toward implementation.
Your deliverable for this assessment is a slide deck of 10–20 slides to supplement your presentation and facilitate discussion of your plan. You may use Microsoft PowerPoint or any other suitable presentation software. Please use the notes section of each slide to develop your talking points and reference your sources, as appropriate.
If you choose to use PowerPoint and need help designing your presentation, consult PowerPoint Presentations for guidance.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.
Reflect on the current cultural climate in your care setting.

    • What aspects of the current cultural climate would aid in achieving one or more specific goals contained in your strategic plan?
    • What aspects of the current cultural climate would present a challenge in achieving one or more specific goals contained in your strategic plan?
    • What leadership theories, models, or strategies could help you turn this challenge into an opportunity?
    • Effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders and constituencies can help in achieving strategic initiatives.
    • How would you communicate the essential aspects of the strategic plan you developed in Assessment 2 to stakeholders or groups, both internal and external to your care setting?
    • Presentation Design Tips
Being able to effectively address any audience is a necessary leadership skill. Remember that you are the speaker, not a projectionist. Your purpose is not to present a slide show. Your audience is there to listen to what you have to say, not read your slides—or worse, listen to you read them. Design your presentation slides to compliment and reinforce your message and engage your listeners.
The following tips will help you create presentation slides that work to your advantage:
    • Focus on the content of your presentation and the development of your main points. Remember that your purpose is to garner support for your plan and build partnerships for implementation.
    • Consider your intended audience and how best to communicate effectively with them.
    • Create slides that support your presentation. They should not be your presentation.
      • Use a professional presentation template, or one used in your organization.
      • Ensure that your slide background provides sufficient visual contrast for your text and graphics.
      • Avoid filling your slides with text. Use speaker notes to record the details you want to communicate to your audience.
      • Be judicious in your use of bulleted lists. You might even consider a separate slide for each main point.
      • Use images and graphics, when appropriate, to illustrate information and make your points. Presentation slides are a visual medium. Images are more effective than text at engaging your audience.
      • Avoid using images that are simply decorative. They can be a visual distraction and do not contribute to your message.
      • Avoid using flashy slide transitions and animations. They can be both distracting and annoying. Keep your slide transitions consistent throughout the presentation.
      • Add a slide to the end of your presentation to prompt questions from the audience.
    • Requirements
Note: The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide, so, at a minimum be sure to address each point. In addition, you are encouraged to review the performance level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed.
Communication, Supporting Evidence, and APA Style
    • Present your plan in a professional and respectful way, with the goal of garnering support for your plan and building partnerships for implementation.
      • Address stakeholders’ needs and concerns.
      • Communicate the need to work collaboratively on implementation.
    • Integrate relevant and credible sources of evidence to support your assertions.
      • Cite at least 3–5 sources of scholarly or professional evidence.
    • Apply correct APA formatting to all in-text citations and references.
    • Add a references slide to your slide deck.
    • Proofread your slides to minimize errors that could distract the audience and make it more difficult to focus on the substance of your presentation.
    • Presentation
    • Summarize your plan for achieving 2–3 main goals. Include corresponding metrics, targets, and initiatives to help achieve the desired quality or safety improvements in the care setting.
    • Note: It may be useful to think about what you hoped to achieve in addressing your care setting’s positive core or specific area of concern in Assessment 1. For example:
    • Progress toward achieving the Triple Aim.
    • Better patient safety outcomes.
    • Lower readmission rates.
    • Higher volume of patients and care.
    • Increased financial gain.
    • Minimizing staff burnout.
    • Improved relationship and trust with the community or a specific population.
    • In addition, remember to consult the literature, research studies, and resources from professional and governmental organizations when developing metrics, targets, and initiatives.
    • Explain how you will communicate your plan to those stakeholders and constituencies who are essential to implementing your plan and sustaining strategic direction.
      • Identify the key individuals or groups with whom you must communicate.
      • Identify the cultural or ethical factors, if any, that are relevant to the design of your communication plan, including how key individuals or groups typically prefer to be contacted.
    • Describe the actions you will take to align your care setting’s structure, systems, shared values, management style, staff, and skills with your strategic goals.
      • Describe the changes that are needed to achieve your goals.
      • Describe the goals and processes for on-boarding relevant individuals or groups.
    • Explain how you will evaluate the success of your strategic plan.
      • Define successful implementation.
      • Describe the successful outcomes for this project.
      • Explain how you will compare outcomes to current performance benchmarks.
      • Explain how you will collect data to evaluate whether you have achieved specific goals and outcomes.
      • Identify your priorities, assuming you cannot accomplish everything.
    • Explain how relevant cultural, ethical, and regulatory considerations influenced the design of your strategic plan and strategies for its implementation.
    • Explain your role, as a nurse leader, in successfully implementing your proposed plan and sustaining strategic direction.
      • Explain how leadership and health care theories support your role.
    • Explain why your leadership qualities and skills will enable you to successfully implement your plan and sustain strategic direction.
      • Explain why you should be the one to lead this initiative.
      • Explain how you have demonstrated some or all of these qualities in past work.
    • Additional Requirements
In addition to your slide deck, submit any other relevant documentation or links for this assessment (if you used presentation software or technology other than PowerPoint).
Portfolio Prompt: You may choose to save this learning activity to your ePortfolio.
      Competencies Measured
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:
    • Competency 1: Evaluate qualities and skills that promote effective leadership within health care organizations.
      • Explain why one’s leadership qualities and skills are well suited to successfully implementing a strategic plan and sustaining strategic direction.

Summative Discussion Board

One of the most important things you can do as an appreciative inquiry, action research (AI/AR) practitioner is to transfer your skills into an organization. Accomplishing this helps to ensure that the organization can continue the work begun during your engagement. In 400-500 words, address the following:

  • What are the 5 skills, concepts, and procedures that you feel are most important when addressing organizational issues? Discuss each element.
  • Additionally,  what were the most significant things you learned during this course?
  • What did you appreciate most about this course?

In addition to addressing all requirements of the assignments, a model answer includes the following:

  • Use order-list (or bullet points) to state the 5      skills, concepts, and procedures that you feel are most important when addressing organizational issues. Then, discuss each element
  • Use order-list (or bullet points) to share the most  significant things you learned during this course
  • Taking into consideration the concepts or AR/AI/PC,  what did you appreciate most about this course?  You may consider      topics such as:
    • AR/AI: Cycles of action research
    • Ten Principles as the Essence of Process Consultation.

writer’s choice

To prepare for this paper, you will choose a “popular” film on a topic of relevance to the course.  Popular means that the film was produced for the general public and is available beyond the scientific or academic media.  A list of possible film choices are provided below.  The purpose of this assignment is to examine the substance of an argument or position posed to the general public and determine its ethical characteristics.  Your paper may include most, if not all, of these aspects: Purpose – what is the purpose of the author or film maker?, Question – Is the question at issue well-stated?, Information – Does the writer or producer cite relevant evidence, experiences, and or information essential to the issue?  Is the information accurate?, Concepts – does the writer or producer clarify key concepts when necessary?, Inferences – does the writer or producer develop a line of reasoning explaining well how she/he arrived at her or his main conclusions?  What ethical concepts can be applied to this reasoning?, Point of View – does the writer or producer show an awareness of alternative relevant points of view or lines of reasoning?, Implications – does the writer or producer show an awareness of the implications and consequences of the position he/she is taking?

However, the main point is to apply 3 ethical theories to the issues addressed in the film. This means thoroughly defining each theory with at least 2 separate, credible sources and then step by step explaining how the issue applies or rejects an ethical theory.

Wk 2 – Apply: Signature Assignment: Organizational Analysis

Assignment Content

Managers at each level of the organization use a type of SWOT analysis to identify strategies that will best position the company to achieve its mission and goals. The first step in a SWOT analysis is to identify an organization’s strengths and weaknesses that characterize the present state of the company. The next step requires managers to identify potential opportunities and threats in the environment that affect the organization in the present or possibly in the future. When the SWOT analysis is complete, managers begin developing strategies. These strategies should allow the company to attain its goals by taking advantage of opportunities, countering threats, building strengths, and correcting organizational weaknesses. Functions of management are plan, organize, lead and control. Levels of management are strategic, operational, tactical.

Demonstrate an understanding of concepts by analyzing and applying information. Do not just report on what you read or your experience/opinion. No more than 10% of response should be quotes. Attend live session or watch video for information on the assignment.

Use the company (Samsung) and SWOT analysis you selected in Week 1 for this assignment (Samsung was the company used in week 1) SWOT is an analysis, not a list.

Use at least one business journal article plus textbook as citations and references. Do not rely on company website as your only source.

Congratulations! You’ve been hired as a manager and have been asked to analyze the current status of your new company.

Review your company’s SWOT analysis and other available sources to evaluate the strategic needs of the organization within a changing global environment. Use the Wk 2 Apply Worksheet for your evaluation. Use APA format for citations and references required in the worksheet. Since the link does not always work, the work sheet is attached. Submit the worksheet as the assignment; do not submit as paper.

Respond to all parts of the worksheet with depth and details providing insights and analysis.

Note: This type of information is often found in the company’s annual report.

Submit the worksheet in Word document attachment; do not submit as a link, in PDF or write in assignment submission area.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – CONSOLIDATED PRODUCTS

  1. Describe the leadership style that Ben Samuels exhibited as the plant manager for Consolidated Products. Provide three examples of his leadership actions and behavior. Discuss the pros and cons in each example you describe to support the response.
  2. Analyze the leadership style that Phil Jones exhibited as he took over to replace Ben. Provide three examples of his leadership actions and behavior, assessing the pros and cons in each example you describe to support the response.
  3. Compare and contrast the leadership styles of Ben and Phil. Provide three examples of the similarities and differences between these leaders and discuss how each leader might address contemporary leadership issues and challenges in Israel today.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Determine the most appropriate leadership style in a project environment to manage the project effectively.
