theorydiscussion

Discuss the applicability of the theory of culture care diversity and universality to discover nursing knowledge and provide culturally congruent care. Take into consideration the current trends of consumers of health care, cultural diversity factors, and changes in medical and nursing school curricula. The following are examples of trends you may use as a thread to start your discussion:

a. The importance of transcultural nursing knowledge in an increasingly diverse world

b. The growth of lay support groups to provide information and sharing of experiences and support for clients, families, and groups experiencing chronic, terminal, or life-threatening illnesses or treatment modalities from diverse or similar cultures

c. Cultural values, beliefs, health practices, and research knowledge in undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula across the life span

d. Inclusion of alternative or generic care in nursing curricula, such as medicine men, Native American healers, curers, and herbalists in the Southwest and selected substantiated Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine methods shown to be effective for the treatment of both acute and chronic diseases

e. The increased access to health care information from the Internet and the growing number of books, audio recordings, and video recordings published on health maintenance, alternative medicine, herbs, vitamins, minerals, and over-the-counter medications and preparations

f. Spiraling health care costs; use of health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations (PPO), or internal plan provider lists; lack of health insurance; increased reliance on self-diagnosis, treatment, and care; and increased availability of diagnostic kits for home-based self-diagnostic testing

g. Problems related to cultural conflicts, stress, pain, and cultural imposition practices

h. Increased suspiciousness and mistrust or distrust of cultural, religious, and political groups because of increased terrorist activities worldwide

Improving Communication Competence Paper

  • Improving Communication Competence Paper
  • Purpose of the Paper
All of us, no matter how learned or skilled in the field of communication, still experience problems communicating interpersonally with others to some degree, so we need to find ways to increase our competence as communicators. By completing this paper I hope you will gain both confidence and ability to more effectively deal with interpersonal communication problems in the future.
    Specifics of the Paper
In this paper, you will: (1) describe an aspect of interpersonal communication that you recognize as being an area of needed improvement for yourself, (2) use theories and concepts from our textbook and/or class lectures to analyze why you might encounter some of the communication problems that you experience, (3) again, using theories and concepts from reading and/or online lectures, describe an action plan for improving communication competence in that area that you’ve discussed.
    Selecting a Topic Area
One way to proceed with this paper is to think of situations where you find it difficult to engage in communication or to achieve your communication goals. For example, maybe you find it difficult not to compete during interpersonal conflict, maybe you’re just not sure how to disclose feelings in a relationship that is important to you, or maybe you don’t know how to effectively listen to a child or parent.
Another suggestion is to make notes of topics discussed in your text with which you can personally identify. For example, after reading the text you may realize that you use language in unconventional ways, possibly in detrimental ways. Or, after reading about nonverbal communication, you realize that you misinterpret a friend’s facial expressions a great deal.
    Format of the paper

    • Each paper should be 3 – 5 pages long. Headings, title pages, and works cited pages do NOT count toward your page count.
    • Paper should include an introduction, body, and conclusion.
    • Each paper should include documentation of your source(s) – at a minimum, you should cite our textbook.
    • The paper should be double-spaced the paper with 12 point Time New Roman font.
  • ItemOrganizational GuideYou do not submit this outline. I am providing the guide to help you organize your writing.
    Introduction (usually 1-2 paragraphs)
    I. Statement to get reader’s attention
II. Identify importance of communication to relationships
    III. Thesis statement
Body (majority of paper – usually 3 to 8 paragraphs)
    I. Describe an aspect of communication that you recognize as being an area of needed improvement for yourself.

    • Provide at least one detailed illustration of how this aspect of communication impacts your ability to achieve communication goals.
    • II. Analyze why you might experience the problems that you do.
    • In this section, it’s critical that you use theories and concepts from your textbook and/or class lecture as a basis for your analysis.
    • Please be very specific about how a theory/concept relates to the analysis you’re making.
    • III. Describe an action plan for improving communication in the area that you’ve discussed.
    • Prepare and detail a plan for improving your communication competence.
    • Again, use theories and concepts from reading and lectures as a basis for your plan.
    • Also, explain how your plan will help you attain your goals.
    • Conclusion
      I. Summarize the paper
II. Wrap up the paper with a statement of significance
    • I call this the “So What?” statement. You should tell your readers why this experience and/or concept/principle is important for you, for them, and/or for everyone to know

week 5 discussion fund of data systems

The use of keys are instrumental in database management. Primary keys allow for distinct records and foreign keys tie records together to create unique relationships between two or more entities and/or tables. In Blockchain, we know that a hash is the equivalent to a key – and makes the chain secure and indisputable (or so we think). Why is it then that with an RDBMS, a primary key and foreign key can still create redundancy, thereby causing data anomalies? Can the same be said about blockchain?

To begin, a school institution ought to be a safe place for students and staff members to freely attend and secure a quality education. Together with this, students and staff members continuously strive to seek a balance between the systemsworld and the lifeworld (Stader, 2013). As time goes by, challenges with maintaining order both on campus and off campus increasingly becomes an issue that school administration must deal with. Moreover, Scenario 3, in this week’s discussion post, illustrates a growing trend of intense online hate speech that is prevalent today. As I recall, while personally attending public school nearly 40 years ago, the unfortunate likelihood that a student would write a note on a piece of paper with hate speech directed toward a single person was somewhat a common occurrence. However, this shameful and disrespectful act has moved to a digital platform with the immediate potential to reach the attention of multitudes of people instantaneously (Stader, 2013).

Considering the increased violence today, school administration ought to uphold the regulatory mandate with direct threats to school staff and students under a reasonable person standard, whereby swiftly and duly enforcing disciplinary action to maintain school safety. Operating within a normative environment school administration must provide a quality education to stakeholders while adhering to First Amendment Rights. The seventh-grade student, mentioned above in Scenario 3, appears to have taken an opportunity to express himself while off campus during non-instructional time. Herein, in comparison to the final ruling of LaVine v. Blaine School District (2001), the factual content in the blog was discerning indeed, however the focus of the violent speech was not directed to a specific single individual with direct intent to deliver a foreseen threat (Stader,2013). On the other hand, the U.S. Supreme Court case Doe v. Pulaski County Special School District (2002) ruled in favor for the respondent, whereby supporting the enforcement of disciplinary action of a perceived threat with a reasonable person standard (Stader, 2013).

Furthermore, Scenario 3 illustrates the need to assess the balance between the lifeworld and the systemsworld. I believe that Frank Jones is protected, in this instance, as he has freely exercised his First Amendment Rights while communicating his thoughts and perceptions about his lifeworld on a private blog post. However, as a principal I would certainly conduct a threat assessment with proper consequences and student supports as needed to ensure continuation of a quality education for all stakeholders. Legal considerations for a school institution include providing qualified immunity for school staff members acting upon reasonable substantiated ground as it pertains to safe school operations, as well as justifiably applying the Tinker substantial disruption test to contentious school acts. Finally, ethical dilemmas can be avoided by administrators conducting thorough and proper threat assessments ensuring students’ First Amendment Rights and access to a proper school education (Stader, 2013).

Identifying the Ethical System

You are an intern at an attorney’s office and you have been asked to prepare a memo in response to the following scenario:

You have been accompanying one of the attorneys in your office to visit a client in jail. You notice that the attorney has been requesting continuances in his case for frivolous reasons. This has kept the inmate in jail for a long time. You suspect this has to do with the fact that the attorney hasn’t received full payment for his work

The inmate discusses the problem with you, asking for your help. Upon being approached, the attorney explains the “Confidence Game,” or the need for putting informal pressure on clients to pay the required legal fees.

You must determine what your next steps will be.

Part 1:

Write an analysis report of four to five pages in Microsoft Word document analyzing the dilemma and how you will handle the problem:

Address if the attorney’s action was ethical.

Explain why you believe the inmate feels he can trust you.

Address if the legal code of the American Bar Association (ABA) was broken?

Explain why you chose to handle the incident in the manner in which you did.

Identify the ethical system you used to make your decision.

Part 2:

Are you a whistle-blower?

Explain when and how whistle-blowing is ethical.

Identify an ethical system that would consider whistle blowing a betrayal.

Identify an ethical system that would consider whistle blowing a public duty.

Would you consider reporting your colleague to a partner in the law firm or some other higher authority?

The subject of False Confessions is widely discussed and hotly debated in criminal justice circles. In fact, many believe that it is not likely that suspects would ever confess to a crime which they did not commit. History has proven that assumption to be false. We know that interrogation is a valuable and necessary law enforcement took, but that safeguards must exist in the process. Read the article included in the PBS “Confessions” presentation and watch the video about the Norfolk 4 included in this presentation. In a 2-3 page, APA formatted paper, based upon the article and the video, address the following questions and provide a final conclusion, as follows:

  1. According to the article, and based on your own research, what are 3 primary reasons why false confessions are given. Make sure to explain what a “false confession” is.
  2. Do you believe that the Reid Technique should continue to be taught and utilized by police? Why or why not?
  3. After viewing the video about the Norfolk 4, provide an opinion as to why the DNA evidence was not given greater weight, and the confessions of each sailor, were considered to be determinative? In your opinion, should each of the sailor’s convictions be overturned? Why or why not?

6.2 Assignment: The Dark Side of Leadership

ReadSpeaker webReader: ListenFocus

Getting Started

In this assignment, you will read Chapter 16, “The Dark Side of Leadership,” in our textbook. Hughes, Ginnet, and Curphy (2019) write:

Because of the profound ways in which leadership affects us all, it would be nice if the people in positions of authority were actually good at it. But research shows that most people are woefully inadequate when it comes to influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals. (p. 638)

The authors describe the most common reasons why people fail in leadership positions—bad leadership, managerial incompetence, and managerial derailment—and the steps leaders can take to improve their odds of success.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Create an ethical strategy and standard for communication during change.

Types of Destructive Leaders Image Transcriptclick to expand contents

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information

In The Leadership Challenge, authors Kouzes and Posner (2007) report on their considerable surveys and research on the subject of leadership. They identify four characteristics most selected in their surveys of admired leadership: honest, forward-looking, inspiring, and competent.

  • Honest: “It’s clear that if people anywhere are to willingly follow someone—whether it’s into battle or into the boardroom, the front office or the front lines—they first want to assure themselves that the person is worthy of their trust” (p.  32).
  • Forward-Looking: “People expect leaders to have a sense of direction and a concern for the future of the organization” (p. 33).
  • Inspiring: “It’s not enough for a leader to have a dream. A leader must be able to communicate the vision in ways that encourage people to sign on for the duration and excite them about the cause” (p. 34).
  • Competent: “To enlist in a common cause, people must believe that the leader is competent to guide them where they’re headed. They must see the leader as having relevant experience and sound judgment” (p. 35).

These characteristics supplement the reading from Chapter 16 of Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience, reinforcing the contention that effective leaders must be careful to safeguard the positive attributes of leadership and guard against the ominous dark side of leadership.

6.3 Assignment: Leadership as Situations Change

Getting Started

In this assignment, you will apply the theory and principles learned in Chapters 15 and 17 in our textbook on the subject of leading successfully in an environment of change.

This course is titled, “Leadership and Organizational Change,” so these two chapters, in particular, are strategic learning experiences as you conclude the course with this workshop. The authors note that the information in the latter chapters of the text is summative in nature and content, building upon the leadership theory and practice provided in earlier chapters.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Describe a major change initiative that you have either experienced personally or of which you are familiar with.
  • Illustrate how that change initiative depicted aspects of the rational approach to organizational change and charismatic and transformational leadership.

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information

In Chapter 15 of Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience, Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2019) describe a “rational approach” to organizational change, including a diagnostic framework for understanding why many change efforts fail.

The authors also provide an intriguing assessment of the charismatic and transformational leadership model and how these types of leaders can have a dramatic influence on change: “The personal magnetism, heroic qualities, and spellbinding powers of these leaders can have unusually strong effects on followers, which often lead to dramatic organizational, political, or societal change” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2019, p. 583).

CHARISMATIC Vs. TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER

CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Leader influences the followers with the dint of his or her personality and charm.

Leader inspires change through his or her vision and passion to get things done.

Leader is the “head of the show.”

Leader is open to followers’ input and participation.

Vision fulfillment by stimulating followers to leader’s vision.

Vision fulfillment inclusive of follower and leader vision.

Charismatic leaders are most likely to emerge in crisis situations.

Transformational leaders can emerge at different levels of the organization.

Behavior aimed at leader-driven goals and promote feelings of obedience and dependency in followers.

Behavior aimed at encouraging teamwork and commitment to shared goals.

*Table adapted from www.techofunc.com ©Chartered Techofunctional Institute

In Chapter 17 of the text, the authors describe the skills necessary for optimizing leadership as situations change:

  • Creating a compelling vision
  • Managing conflict
  • Negotiation
  • Diagnosing performance problems in individuals, groups, and organizations
  • Team building at the top
  • Punishment (p. 694)

In this assignment, you will apply the leadership theory provided in Chapters 15 and 17 to a real-world change initiative based upon your personal experience or a situation with which you are familiar.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Read Chapters 15 and 17 of our textbook, including all Profiles and Highlights for added perspective on the chapter’s content.
  3. Write an analysis paper in response to the following:
    1. Describe a major change initiative that you have either experienced personally or of which you are familiar.
    2. Using the information in Chapter 15, illustrate how that change initiative depicted aspects of the rational approach to organizational change and characteristics of charismatic and transformational leadership. Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
    3. Using the information in Chapter 17, illustrate how that change initiative utilized one or several of the leadership skills listed in the chapter (i.e., creating a compelling vision, managing conflict, etc.). Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
  4. Your analysis should be 600 to 800 words in length. Use proper spelling, grammar, and APA style in your analysis and any sources cited. For question on APA style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  5. When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop.

  • Video: INSEAD Professors Stewart Black and Hal Gregersen on How Changing Individuals Changes Organizations

Background Information

Black describes the three reasons why people, and therefore organizations, do not change. First, failure to see. Organizations miss the obvious market transformations. Next is the failure to move. People fail to change even when they see the need.

Finally, even after people and organizations do recognize the need to change and begin the process, the change efforts stall out and they fail to finish. The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with the capability to anticipate change, move when needed, and finish without “being told” (Black, 2014). Black (2014) also believes that leading strategic change is not just about leading big and important changes, but it is also about leading change that helps create and sustain competitive advantage (p. 175). This requires not only understanding the three barriers to successful change but also appreciating three fundamental types of change.

Chapter 9 describes these three types of change and how each relates to the three barriers of change.

Anticipatory change is anticipating the strategic need for change rather than waiting for it to show up at your front door and how each relates to the three barriers of change.

Reactive change revolves around reacting to obvious signs and signals that change is needed. When you ignore anticipatory change and reactive change, crisis change is more than likely to occur.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Read Chapter 9 in It Starts With One: Changing Individuals Changes Organizations.
  3. Watch the video INSEAD Professors Stewart Black and Hal Gregersen on How Changing Individuals Changes Organisations.

(Note: It is not necessary to do any outside research beyond the information in Chapter 9). Provide a detailed explanation for your discussion that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
  5. Write a substantive response to the following, with citations that include the page reference from Chapter 9:
    1. Share from your own experience, either as a follower or a leader, three change initiatives (one from each category—anticipatory, reactive, crisis). For each, describe the situation, the need driving the change, and the urgency of the change.
    2. Select the change that was most significant to you.
      1. Restate the type of change (anticipatory, reactive, crisis) you are describing.
      2. Discuss your personal readiness and the organization’s readiness for change. Refer to the three barriers (failure to see, failure to move, failure to finish).
      3. Describe the outcome of the change initiative and refer to lessons acquired from Chapter 9 on how to initiate positive change in an organization
  6. Your discussion should be 400–500 words in length. Use proper spelling, grammar, and APA style in your analysis and any sources cited. For questions on APA style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  7. When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop.
