Paper on beauty

To what extent is “beauty” determined by biological functions, and to what extent is it determined by sociological functions?

There are a number of peer-reviewed studies that point to biological factors – such as face and body symmetry, waist-to-hip ratios, and physical characteristics associated with youth and fertility – as part of the “cultural universals” of beauty.

But these characteristics alone don’t tell the whole story of beauty. The images on this page are from an article titled, “What the Ideal Woman Looks Like in 11 Countries Around the World.” These women may all have symmetrical faces or the other characteristics mentioned above, but these photos clearly demonstrate that the definition “beauty” varies from culture to culture. When meanings or definitions change over time, or vary from place to place, there’s a high likelihood that we’re dealing with a socially constructed concept. It’s also worth noting that discussions of beauty are often gendered; we’re much more likely to describe women and girls as beautiful than men and boys. Also, the beauty standards that we apply to one gender are often very different than the standards for other genders; the social construction of beauty prescribes different expectations for people based on their gender. (This is also true for different races, social classes, religions, and many other consequential categories of difference.)

For this paper, you will need to use your sociological imagination and other critical thinking skills to evaluate women’s beauty standards in America and Mauritania (NW Africa) and analyze the cultural similarities and differences between the two nations. 

OBJECTIVES

Your paper should: 

  • Describe the physical beauty norms for American women, including activities and behaviors undertaken in pursuit of the physical ideal
  • Describe the physical beauty norms for Mauritanian women, including activities and behaviors undertaken in pursuit of the physical ideal
  • Identify aspects of American and Mauritanian societies that contribute to the social construction of beauty in each country, including type of society, culture, values, social construction of reality, and socialization

Sociology focuses on social behavior and interactions, which is drastically transformed right now. Since we are currently “socially distanced” from each other, in place of the observation assignment we will do something safer, and relevant to the current situation. This pandemic has affected us all, and the ways in which we interact have suddenly changed in many ways.

You will interview two people about changes that have occurred with social interactions during this pandemic. You can interview people in your household, and/or you can interview people on the phone, or online through a platform such as Zoom, Skype, Face Time, etc. One suggestion is you can interview your classmates online. You can connect with each other through the discussion board on Canvas or during our scheduled online chats.

Your interviews will focus on different types of interactions, including those in intimate relationships (such as family, significant others, and close friends). You will also ask about interactions with casual acquaintances (such as classmates, professors, coworkers, etc.), and interactions with strangers. You can ask about interactions that occur face-to-face, as well as online and on the telephone.

Below is a list of questions you can ask, if applicable to the interviewee. Each one of these questions should lead to a page-worth of information, so these questions should not lead to short answers. You can also come up with additional questions of your own.

How have your intimate relationships (family, significant other, close friendships) been affected?

How does the problem of two nodes pointing to each other (Figure 14.8) relate to the spread of misinformation on the WWW?

1.When two nodes point to each other in a circular loop, they can inflate their page rankings. When looking for information on a specific and possibly niche topic, you may be recommended these pages. If these pages contain misinformation you run into a very specific problem. Because they reference each other, they may carry the same misinformation, which wouldn’t be as big of a problem if these pages had links to other more reputable sites. But because they don’t, they create a sort of bubble or echo chamber of misinformation. Since the people looking at these sites may not receive information that forces them to question the misinformation, they could take it as fact.

2.When two nodes point to each other, and are reachable from the rest of the graph but have no paths back, this is problematic because the PageRank builds up for the two nodes, but does not go back to the rest of the nodes. If these two pages have high PageRanks, then they will appear at the top of the search results, which are most commonly clicked on by users. Now, say there is some obscure topic that does not get explored often, but these two webpages happen to discuss it. Even if these webpages have false information on the topic, they are still appearing at the top of the search results, causing people to read and spread the misinformation.

3.The problem with two nodes pointing to each other is that the two nodes will never flow back to the start of the network graph. With two nodes relaying information back and forth to each other then it causes the PageRank of those two nodes circulating back and forth between each other to be higher than they should be. This would lead to misinformation because people who want to search for a certain topic will most likely choose the first or the second option in the google search bar even though those might not be the most reliable sources of information. Reasearch has been done on this topic in that most people are more than likely going to choose the first or second topic anyways. This is why it is super important to relay the information back to the other nodes because it can lead to more of this spread of misinformation.

I always start a marketing course with the same Bible verse:

Proverbs 20:23, “The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him.”

Why is there a passage on scales in the Old Testament? Because the market in those days was near the town center and sometimes inside the Temple. Unfortunately, it had become known as a place of dishonest merchants. Jesus said in Mark 11:17

“And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ’My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it a ‘den of robbers’.”

In those days, a large number of staples were sold on weight—grain, rice, meat, etc.—just as they are today. A scale was used to determine how much the buyer was buying. If the scales were intentionally inaccurate and read higher than reality, the buyer got a bad deal. There was minimal oversight of merchants and no Federal Trade Commission or state Division of Weights and Measurements to verify the accuracy of the scales, so the buyer had to trust the integrity of the seller. Was this fair to the buyer? I would say no. Today many products are still sold be weight or volume (cereal, water, gas, electricity, meat, etc.) but technology is so common that it would be very difficult for a manufacturer or retailer to consistently short a customer. However, one company I know printed on 16 point board, which is measure of thickness. The industry spec for that type of paperboard was +/- 1 pt, so a purchased 16-point board could range from 15-17 points. Thicker also meant heavier and since paper is actually sold by weight, a 15-point saved 6.25% by weight which was millions of dollars a year if you bought enough. The only problem—they used it and sold it as 16-point and as long as the manufacturer produced 15 as 15, they were “within industry tolerance” of a 16-point board. Was that legal? Yes. Did it lead to more profit? Yes. Was it ethical? I would tend to say no.

Marketing is rife with ethical intersections like this. Even with the incredible increase in oversight today, unethical practices in marketing and sales exist. Throughout this course, we will look at ethical issues and questions because as leaders, we are very visible in our actions and policies. As Christian-trained business people, it is up to us to hold to a high standard of honesty in ad copy, performance statements, negotiations, service claims, pricing, donor relations, corporate sponsorships, and service delivery.

The purpose of writing an Executive Summary for your final assignment is to learn how to address a higher level person that has the power to make some changes for which you want to advocate.  This assignment addresses course outcome #5: Investigate Policy Solutions to address individual and social pathologies associated with emerging technological trends.

You are asked to prepare an Executive Summary for the Governor of your State on the topic you investigated in your Reference Summaries and Cross-cultural papers. Your job is to highlight the importance of your chosen topic by stating why the issue warrants public attention.  Be sure to identify the scope and scale of who is impacted by your topic and then support your summary with the research you have done. Finally, take a position on what you would like done at the public policy levels to address any gaps or shortcomings that are raised by your topic.

An Executive Summary is a 1-2 page paper that succinctly highlights key points and uses these points to make recommendations to one or more stakeholders.  It is usually part of a more detailed report that allows policy makers at all levels to make informed decisions without having to read the entire report.

A good Executive Summary  contains a great deal of information in just one or two pages, and is concisely and efficiently written so that the reader feels that he/she has a firm grasp of the key issues after having read the summary. The writer must be convincing and definitive in his/her recommendations.

Format

  1. One to two single-spaced pages. Page length does not include the reference list. All references should appear on a separate page at the end of the paper using APA 7th edition format;
  2. The document should have one-inch margins on all sides as well as page numbers;
  3. The document should be submitted as an MS Word file; *pdf documents will not be accepted;
  4. Although executive summaries do not usually include citations (because they are contained in the larger report), for this assignment you are expected to include in-text citations and references should follow APA 7th edition format;
  5. Writing should be clear, concise, and professional. Avoid all jargon and slang;
  6. PROOFREAD YOUR WORK prior to submission.
