ethical and legal issue in HC—— 8 slides ,APA STYLE 7th edition —–

It has been reported that most healthcare facilities and plans employ quality improvement and risk managers to oversee risk and quality issues relating to physicians and support staff (Judson & Harrison, 2021). Quality improvement and risk managers may also assume responsibility for compliance with federal, state, and other healthcare regulations. A compliance plan is developed to help ensure that all government regulations are followed.

Considering the following section from the course scenario, you may agree with this perspective.

Seeking Solutions

All of these ethical violations resulted in St. Michael’s Medical Center facing a massive lawsuit amounting to millions of dollars. The hospital has violated most of the regulatory compliance standards set by agencies such as the following:

  • National Association of Healthcare Quality (NAHQ)
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • The Joint Commission (TJC)
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Despite these agencies’ fines, the hospital continues to endanger patients with poor quality healthcare outcomes.

St. Michael’s Medical Center is now seeking a risk mitigation consultant to head the hospital as the new chief executive officer (CEO). You have been selected because of your risk management background. You realize that the hospital could have avoided all of these problems if it had complied with regulations, trained its staff, and enforced internal organizational policies. You are hired to put things in order and prevent future problems.

For this assignment, you will prepare a final presentation for the Board of Governors of St. Michael’s Medical Center. For this presentation, you will prepare an 8-slide PowerPoint addressing the following:

  • What are some current risk areas in healthcare?
  • How do these risk areas affect the quality of care in patients?
  • How do patient safety issues influence organizational performance?
  • How are ethical and legal issues related to patient safety and organizational outcomes?
  • What are the organizational obligations for reporting risk?
  • How do patient outcomes relate to risk management?
  • What are the roles of external regulatory bodies—such as the OSHA, the NAHQ, TJC, and the CMS—and why are they significant to patient care and organizational performance?
  • What quality management initiatives would you put in place to enhance St. Michael’s Medical Center’s image?

Discussion: Meeting the Needs of Service Users From Diverse Cultures

It is not feasible for advanced human services professional practitioners to be familiar with the cultural values, beliefs, and norms of every cultural group present within a community they serve. Being a successful practitioner in this era of diversity does, however, require that you practice open-mindedness, acknowledge possible differences without judgment, and research or seek guidance about culturally sensitive and ethically sound interventions. It also requires that you consider how the evolving context in which you work influences how you respond to service users.

In this Discussion, you will respond to one of the case studies in the Hart City community. In doing so, you will examine cultural and ethical considerations related to working with the service user in the case study as well as how a recent current event might influence your approach.

To Prepare

  • Review your Course Announcements for possible information related to this week’s Discussion and Assignment.
  • Review the Week 4 case studies and select one to focus on for this Discussion. Keep the case study in mind as you review this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Review the chapters in the text that pertain to the cultures of the service user in the case study you selected. Given what you read about the cultures, think about how you would assist the service user while respecting their culture.
  • Review the Ethical Standards for Human Services Professionals. Identify ethical standards that would inform your work with the service user in the case study.
  • Review the article on the cultural impacts of social movements. Think about how current events, such as social movements, may influence how you approach the service user in the case study.

Post your response to the following questions as they relate to the case study you selected:

  • What can you do to assist the service user in achieving their goals while respecting their culture? What cultural aspects are most important to consider in this case, and why?
  • What are your ethical responsibilities to the service user? Why are these ethical considerations necessary? Be specific and support your answer with references to the NOHS ethical standards.
  • How would one recent current event influence how you approach this case study? Be specific.

Solving the Problem: Ideating

Think about your personal workspace in your home (i.e., where you study and complete your school assignments), and consider what you like about it and what you might change. You should take into consideration what, to you, is the ideal environment for studying and working. Think about aspects such as furniture, lighting, color, sound/quiet, accessibility, space, etc.

For this Discussion, you will perform a brainstorming exercise related to your workspace and share your experience with your colleagues.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Brainstorm ideas for how you would alter this space to perfectly suit your needs. No idea is too outlandish, and you should generate this list of ideas without worrying about budget or other limitations.
  • Set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes and write down every idea that comes to you. Then, take a few minutes to look at your list and think about the top two or three that you could realistically implement.

Post a 150- to 225-word (2- to 3-paragraph) synthesis of your brainstorming exercise related to redesigning your workspace, to include the following:

  • Summarize the results of your brainstorming exercise, including your narrowed-down list of two or three ideas that you could realistically implement.
  • Identify any insights you gained from completing this exercise.
  • To support your response, be sure to reference at least one properly cited scholarly source.

**References must come from scholarly sources**

Disabilities Act

Ensuring a sport facility is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires consideration of many elements; it begins in the design process, and continues for the life of the facility. For this assignment, you will research four separate ADA-related lawsuits against sport facilities in the United States since the year 2000. You may not use any cases referenced in the textbook. For each lawsuit, you will write two paragraphs briefly describing the lawsuit and the required information about each lawsuit listed in Step 3 below. Then, you will organize the paragraphs into a two-page paper. You will be required to supplement your writing with the citations from articles you locate in the scholarly databases from the online library.

Please contact a librarian at the Online Library if you are unsure what kind of article is required, or if you need assistance locating an article.

Steps for completing the assignment are as follows:

  1. Use the scholarly databases to identify four ADA-related lawsuits against sport facilities.
  2. Read the instructor feedback from the last assignment and apply it as you write this paper.
  3. Write two paragraphs summarizing each lawsuit. Each paragraph must contain at least three sentences. Include in the content:
    1. a brief description of the lawsuit,
    2. the names of the plaintiffs and defendants,
    3. a description of the central issue of the lawsuit,
    4. a description of the outcome of the lawsuit, and
    5. how the facility could have been built to be compliant with the ADA to avoid the lawsuit.
  4. Organize your paragraphs into a two-page paper and include a conclusion section in which you describe the key takeaways from your research of these lawsuits.
  5. Submit your paper according to the information provided below.

Paper requirements are as follows:

  • Write a minimum of two double-spaced pages.
  • Address the topic of the paper using critical thought. The required information listed above should clearly stand out and be unambiguous. Otherwise, it will be determined to be missing.
  • Ensure that all parts of your paper are formatted according to the APA style as detailed in the approved APA manual.
  • Include a title page that includes:
    • title of paper,
    • your name, and
    • university name.
  • Include three paragraphs in an introductory section at the start of your paper.
  • Include the following first-level headings:
  • Introduction
    • Lawsuit: [Plaintiff vs. Defendant]
    • Lawsuit: [Plaintiff vs. Defendant]
    • Lawsuit: [Plaintiff vs. Defendant]
    • Lawsuit: [Plaintiff vs. Defendant]
    • Conclusion
  • Include a reference page as a new page following your paper’s conclusion. Ensure that this page is completed and formatted according to the correct APA style.
  • Avoid the serious consequence of plagiarism by using your own words and including citations for sources you used.
  • As with all discussion board responses and assignments, non-scholarly sources such as Wikipedia and About.com may not be cited in your work.

Poem experience

For this experiment, we’re going to get inspired by two interesting forms in the book: the couplet (as seen in “Cerebrum corpus monstrum”) and the permutation poem. (as seen in “My heart is full of practical folklore”). (those one-page readings are attached in files)

Brainstorming:

After reading “My heart is full of practical folklore,” think of a bit of folk wisdom you carry with you. Some advice you may agree or disagree with. It could be something unique to your culture (spit three times to ward off the evil eye, for example, which is something my grandmother did) or something broadly known (use rice to dry out a phone that’s been dropped in water, for example, which is something I learned from the internet).

Write down this bit of “practical folklore.”

Can you come up with others? Make a list of several bits of practical folklore. Try to come up with 5 examples and write them down. Highlight the ones you find most interesting.

Pick one of the phrases and permute it, trying out variations in the word order to generate new sentences. Try to do what Bertram does in her poem, rearranging the words so the advice seems to be telling you to do something else. Circle any permutations that that interest you.

Your Experiment:

You are going to construct a poem in couplets, meaning stanzas that are only two lines long. After every two lines, insert an extra break. A line in a stanza doesn’t have to end with a period. It can be enjambed. The two lines of a couplet can be the same length or different lengths.

The form is generally used to convey a feeling of balance and symmetry, so messing with that symmetry can be interesting!

Bertram breaks her couplets periodically, leaving one line standing alone without a pair (lonely!). Do this only if you feel it deepens the meaning of your poem.

Option 1

Write a poem in couplets that does the following:

Includes at least one of your “folk wisdom” sentences and one of its permutations (feel free to use more if you found good examples!).

Tries to avoid using clichés. After you write a line, ask yourself “have I ever heard this before?”

Tries to avoid giving the reader a moral. Keep in mind Carrie Bennett’s advice about using the poem to explore a question without a predetermined lesson.

Option 2

If you are someone who wants to do something more “technical” or formal, or if you want more direction, here is a more specific prompt:

Write your poems in a traditional couplet form: the ghazal (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (originally an Arabic verse form)

The Form

At least 5 couplets.

Every line has the same number of syllables.

The first couplet sets up the rhyme scheme and a word that will repeat at the end of each couplet.

Each couplet is thematically and tonally independent from the others. They are “closed” (ending with a full stop).

The poet inserts their name in the final couplet in second or third person. This is called the makhta.

Here’s John Hollander’s “Ghazal,” which explains the form as it unfolds, as an example:

GHAZAL

For couplets, the ghazal is prime: at the end

Of each one’s a refrain like a chime: “at the end.”

But in subsequent couplets throughout the whole poem,

It’s this second line only will rhyme at the end.

On a string of such strange, unpronouncable fruits,

How fine the familiar old lime at the end!

All our writing is silent, the dance of the hand,

So that what it comes down to’s all mine, at the end.

Dust and ashes? How dainty and dry! We decay

To our messy primordial slime at the end.

Two frail arms of your delicate form I pursue,

Inaccessible, vibrant, sublime at the end.

You gathered all manner of flowers all day,

But your hands were most fragrant of thyme, at the end.

There are so many sounds! A poem having one rhyme?

–A good life with a sad, minor crime at the end.

Each couplet’s a different ascent: no great peak,

But a low hill quite easy to climb at the end.

Two-armed bandits: start out with a great wad of green

Thoughts, but you’re left with a dime at the end.

Each assertion’s a knot which must shorten, alas,

This long-worded rope of which I’m at the end.

Now Qafia Radif has grown weary, like life,

At the game he’s been wasting his time at. THE END.

Your Experiment:

Write a ghazal

You might choose not to repeat words, but to use rhyme / wordplay instead. Feel free to use any of the kinds of rhyme we’ve learned about: off-rhyme, consonance, assonance, pararhyme.

Each couplet SHOULD be discontinuous (emotionally and thematically) from the others. Use this disjointedness to your advantage (to create mystery? to tell us something about the poem’s speaker? to sound mystical?)

Give us at least 5 couplets.

This is an opportunity to cherry pick lines from your journal that haven’t gone anywhere.

Try to include a spoonerism. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Include your folk wisdom from the brainstorming in some way.

You must use the attached Format to write this poem experience.

One-page total. 15 lines for poem. Due before May 9, 11:59.

4 Pages APA – Critical Thinking Assignment –

Option #1: CSR in Multinational Corporations

Companies doing business internationally deal with complex sourcing and supply chain issues. Unfortunately, many multinational corporations have failed to include CSR practices in their global operations. Due to a number of international human rights disasters resulting from lack of supply chain auditing, corporations are rapidly becoming more transparent and are adopting globally accepted codes of conduct.

Read the case of Apple and Foxconn (pg. 273) in the textbook. In a well-written paper, respond to the following issues:

  • Explain why a firm is responsible for its supply chain. If the answer is that a firm is not responsible, discuss an organization that exemplifies this. If the answer is that the firm is responsible, then how far down the supply chain does this extent (i.e., to immediate suppliers, the suppliers’ suppliers, or beyond)? Support all claims or assertions with scholarly research according to the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
  • Why does Apple continue to source its production to overseas firms such as Foxconn? What advantages, if any, does this generate for Apple? What are the disadvantages, if any, that result from this relationship? How could Apple have avoided the threats identified? Overall, do the benefits of Apple’s decision outweigh the costs? Support your opinions with scholarly research according to the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

Your well-written paper must adhere to the following parameters:

  • Be 4 pages in length, not including the title and reference pages.
  • Be supported by six, with at least four scholarly references. Remember, you must support your thinking/opinions and prior knowledge with references; all facts must be supported; in-text references used throughout the assignment must be included in an APA-formatted reference list.
  • Review the grading rubric within this assignment for more detail on how this assignment will be graded.
  • Be formatted according to the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

Review the Module 4 Critical Thinking Assignment rubric for full details on how you will be graded on this assignment. Reach out to your instructor if you have questions about the assignment.
