Rhetorical Analysis Assignment

You are analyzing John Green’s speech to Kenyon graduates that in the transcript I have uploaded. You must analyze the transcript of the speech, not the video/audio.

In a 1,000+ word essay, analyze the text to determine its success and/or failure in addressing the rhetorical situation. You must provide a thesis statement with a claim and explain how and why sections of the text succeed or fail to address the situation.

Steps

Step 1

Introduction: provide a “hook”, explain the rhetorical context of your chosen speech, the speaker’s purpose, and your thesis statement

Summary: This should contain the main points in the speech.

Step 2

Body Paragraphs: In several paragraphs, you should identify and analyze the “moves” the speaker made, which appeals were evoked, provide evidence of the connection between the “move” and the appeal, and explain how it supports your overall thesis.

Conclusion: Revisit your thesis statement and then put your analysis into a larger context
