Biography Research Paper

Serena Williams Biography Research Paper

the research paper is going to be a biography of a famous person Serena Williams. However, this paper is not going to be a typical biographical essay that tends to give a chronological—and boring—description of the subject from his or her birth to his or her death. Instead, I’m going to ask you to focus on the one particular part of that person’s life that you consider to be a turning point. For example, if the subject of your paper were Barack Obama, you would probably focus on his election as President. If the subject of your paper were Harriet Tubman, you might want to discuss her first successful navigation of the Underground Railroad. But a person’s turning point may not be the most obvious choice. In your research you may find that the most important instance of a person’s life occurred in his or her childhood, and not at the point where he or she achieved the apex of fame and accomplishment. And for certain celebrities, their deaths might be considered the most important turning point. Consider Abraham Lincoln, for example. Certainly, his tragic and unexpected murder could certainly be considered a turning point in our national history.

But just because I want you to primarily focus on your subject’s turning point, does not mean that you have to ignore the basic facts of the person’s life, such as where and when he or she was born, lived, died, etc.; you will, of course, need to write about those details. Still, I want the paper to be mostly focused on the turning point—and I want you to tell it like a story. The rough draft of this paper will be due October 27th, the final draft will be due November 18th.

Now while this first draft is going to be “rough,” there are three aspects of your drafts that I want to see completed perfectly.

· First, I want to see your papers accurately formatted using MLA guidelines. This means that I want to see the margins at one inch; I want to see a header with your last name and page number (2-3 pages) on the top right; a heading that contains your name, then my name, the class, and then the date. Your paper should have a title that is centered, and everything should be double spaced.

· Next, I also want to see a perfectly formatted works cited page. The works cited page is perhaps the most hated aspect of writing a research paper, so it’s good to get it over with for the rough draft. But as I mentioned in my weekly introduction, we are living in a time where the creation of work cited pages is far easier than when I was an undergraduate. There are a host of websites where all you have to do is input the information for your sources and they will create a perfect citation for you. Below I will provide a link that lists a number of these resources. And I will also provide you a site concisely describes the ins and outs of MLA formatting and citation.

· Finally, and this is related to the works cited page, I want to see you attempt to include in-text citations in your paper. These are also known as parenthetical citations because they’re contained in parentheses at the end of each quoted for paraphrased sentence. Generally, the parentheses at the end of the sentence contains the author’s last name and page number. Of course, it’s not always that simple; sometimes the article you are citing doesn’t have an author or page number, so you might be confused as to what goes in the parentheses in those cases.

EBP and the Theory-Practice Gap

Theory is used in health care and health care practices every day; however, most health care providers are unaware of its influence. By increasing your awareness of philosophy, science, and nursing theory, you are better able to recognize its application in daily practice. The use of evidence-based practice (EBP) models also help facilitate the implementation of research in clinical practice. This Discussion explores EBP as a strategy for bridging the theory-to-practice gap.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the interrelationship between theory, practice, and research and how evidence-based practice integrates this relationship.
  • Consider the pros and cons of implementing EBP in nursing practice.
  • Conduct additional research as necessary using credible websites and the Walden Library to better understand the benefits and concerns of EBP in clinical practice.

By Day 3 post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

  • Why would a focus on EBP be good for advanced nursing practice?
  • What are some drawbacks?

McEwin, M., & Wills, E. M. (2019). Theoretical basis for nursing. (5th ed.) Philadelphia, PA: Wolters Kluwer Health.

  • Chapter 19, “Application of Theory in Nursing Practice”

Chapter 19 examines the relationship between theory and nursing practice. It discusses how evidence-based practice provides an opportunity to utilize research and theory to improve patient outcomes, health care, and nursing practice.

Sula

Post your tentative thesis statement for your literary analysis essay on Sula. Remember that a thesis takes a position about your topic. You are making a kind of argument, an argument that supports a particular analysis of the novel.

Here are two examples of posts and responses with good suggestions for improvement:

Cassie:    In Toni Morrison’s novel Sula, both Sula and Nel go on journeys of self-discovery and happiness, which is accomplished through their friendship. However, Sula’s journey of self-discovery continues after their friendship is destroyed while Nel’s is halted due to their differing life paths.

Brian:    Hey Cassie! I love how you started off your thesis really strongly, making a clear the idea that Nel and Sula go on journeys of self-discovery together. I do also see that the thesis has been broken up in two sentences which I think should be an entire sentence. I like how you ended it as well, seeing both sentences combined would make your thesis statement even better!

Professor:     Cassie, good point about the characters’ journeys being made possible through their friendship! To focus this idea more clearly, you may need to describe the character traits that make Sula more able to pursue her journey of self-discovery and Nel less able to do so (at least maybe until the very end of the novel). By the way, sometimes, especially when two sentences are closely connected to one another, you can have two sentences make up your thesis. You might even use a semi-colon (;) between the two sentences to indicate their close connection.

Case Conceptualization: Interventions and Evaluation

In this assignment, you will continue to discuss your work with the client you presented in your Unit 5 Case Conceptualization paper.

Complete this assignment by addressing the following topics in a four-part format.

Part 1: Interventions

List the three goals you formulated for this client and presented in your Unit 5 paper. (If your instructor provided feedback or comments about your goals on that assignment, you can include revised goals here.)

For each goal, list one specific counseling intervention you used during your work with this client to help him or her make progress toward that goal. Each intervention must be evidence-based; you will need to support your choice of intervention with reference to the current professional literature and research showing its effectiveness.

For each intervention, your list, include the following:

  • Discuss how you introduced this intervention into the counseling session and how the client responded.
  • Describe how the intervention is reflective of your specific theoretical approach, drawing from the key concepts and assumptions of that theory.
  • Discuss your rationale for selecting the intervention, in terms of its appropriateness for your specific client and his or her presenting issues. Address all sociocultural issues that you considered when introducing this intervention into your work with the client.
  • Include at least one reference to a current article in the professional literature that supports the use of the intervention as being effective with this type of client and/or presenting issues.

Part 2: Ethical and Legal Issues

Discuss any ethical or legal issues that emerged during your work with this client. (If no such issues arose, then discuss the types of ethical or legal issues that might emerge when working with this type of client and/or these presenting issues.)

Discuss the steps you took to address the ethical or legal issues. Refer to the specific standard from the ACA Code of Ethics that relates to any ethical issue that you describe. Include reference to specific laws or regulations that apply to these types of situations.

Part 3: Client Progress and Counseling Outcome

For each of the goals you developed, describe the ways in which the client demonstrated progress during the time you worked with him or her. Include specific changes that the client reported to you, changes that you observed during sessions, and/or information that you gathered from other sources (such as self-report measures or assessments or reports from third parties that you gathered with the client’s written consent).

  • If the client showed progress toward a goal, what do you believe led to this change? For example, was a specific intervention particularly effective? Did the relationship you formed with the client, or some interaction between you and the client during a session, have an impact on how the client changed?
  • If the client did not show the progress you anticipated for the goal, what is your understanding of this? Would you consider a different theoretical approach, or different types of interventions, based on your review of the work you have done with the client?

What is your overall evaluation of the work you did with this client? If you were going to make recommendations to the next therapist who works with this client (or with a client similar to this one), what would you suggest, in terms of the main approach, goals, and interventions that the therapist might consider?

Support your ideas with reference to the current professional literature.

Part 4: Future Development

Discuss the progress you have made as a counselor during your fieldwork experience.

  • What are your main strengths?
  • What specific areas of knowledge and self-awareness have you developed?
  • What has been particularly challenging for you?

Thinking ahead to the work you will be doing in gaining your post-degree hours towards licensure, what are three specific skills or areas of knowledge that you would like to focus on?

  • How will you select an internship or clinical experience that will assist you in meeting these goals?
  • How do you plan to maximize your supervision experience in your post-degree internship, based on what you have experienced during supervision so far?
  • What specific license, certification, and/or credentials will you be seeking after graduation?

As you move forward in your career, how will you align your continued professional development and your clinical practice with the standards we have for mental health counselors?

  • Refer to specific standards from the ACA Code of Ethics, as well as to other national and state standards that guide the work counselors do.
  • Include a description of the professional organizations to which you’ll belong and how this membership will be important to your professional and career development.
  • List three specific areas of professional development that you will be exploring in the future.

Assignment Specifications

Your Unit 8 assignment should be 5–8 pages long and include a minimum of four references from current articles (no more than 10 years old) in professional journals. You can also include books and Web sites from professional organizations in your references. Please use direct quotations sparingly; you should paraphrase most of the information drawn from outside sources and present ideas in your own words. Remember to follow the APA format for your citations.
