Discussion: Recognizing the Connection Between Job Attitudes, Individual Performance, and Organizational Effectiveness

Every day, employees bring to work their attitudes about the organization, the job, and coworkers. Some of the attitudes may interfere with their performance, but others may actually contribute to work and organizational effectiveness. It is often easy to spot the negative attitudes. Less often, positive attitudes are the topic of conversation. Be that as it may, recognizing attitudes that contribute to personal and organizational success is an important skill that I/O consultants acquire and develop.

In this Discussion, you will explore how job attitudes can affect performance, organizational citizenship, and organizational effectiveness using an example from your own experience.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Reflect back on your own job experiences and/or those of past or current coworkers. Consider all that you have learned from this week as well as all of the previous course readings, discussions, and assignments.
  • Read the article “Attitudes and Attitude Change.” Consider how attitude, job related or not, can be fixed and change in a moment due to personal values as well as social and sociohistorical events.
  • Read the article “Improving Firm Performance Through Inter-Organizational Collaborative Innovations: The Key Mediating Role of the Employee’s Job-Related Attitudes.” Think about the mediating role HR can play in employee job attitudes.
  • Read the article “An Extended Model of the Interaction Between Work-Related Attitudes and Job Performance.” Reflect on the analysis of organizational support (POS), job satisfaction, and organizational commitment on job attitudes.
  • Read the article “Attitude, Job Satisfaction, and Task Performance of Thai Millennial Employees Toward Workplace Fun.” Think about the role of workplace fun in increasing job satisfaction and job performance.
  • Read the article “The Impact of Job Satisfaction, Organization Commitment, Organization Citizenship Behavior (OCB) on Employees’ Performance.” Consider how OCB can mediate performance of employees.
  • Read the article “The Antecedents and Consequences of Psychological Capital: A Meta-Analytic Approach.” Think about leader and member psychological capital and OCB and the effects on job performance.

By Day 3

Post a response to the following:

Provide an example of how job attitudes can affect performance, organizational citizenship, and organizational effectiveness. Base your comments from personal observation, as well as drawing from the relevant empirical literature.

Discussion: World Poverty

Thoughtfully reflect on the issues discussed in the video(s) you viewed.  Address the following points in your discussion:

  • What is the speaker’s point of view about the topic? Is the speaker biased?
  • What ethical issues and ethical reasoning are argued?
  • Do you think that world poverty issues have moral and ethical implications? Why or why not?
  • Do you agree with the speaker’s point of view? Be specific and thorough. Express how and why you agree or disagree and discuss how ethics and values contribute to your opinion. Consider the theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Do not just state your viewpoint, rather provide relevant details to support your findings and/or position.

View one or more of the following YouTube TED Talk videos about world poverty:

Media

This is what my teacher asked me to do:

This writing assignment tests your critical thinking skills and the ability to connect sections of the assigned reading material and develop an argument that examines the changing relationships between the individual, society, and the communications media.

Explain how the changes from the television culture of the 1950s through the 1970s to the internet and streaming culture of today affected relationships between individuals and American society and how an individual’s place in society affects experiences, values, or choices. (1) Begin with a brief description of over-the-air television’s common-denominator programs, emphasizing corporate control and the attention-selling model of making money. (2) Then describe how this model works with the range of streaming and social media fare available these days. (3) Finally, write about how an individual’s place in the social hierarchy of American society affects experiences, values, or choices.

In writing about the shifting communications structure from over-the-air television to cable to streaming to social media sites, you should connect your answer to other concepts we’ve been exploring. These include the ethics and underlying premises of racial categories, gender roles, or pertinent aspects of media law. For example, you can write about racial representations, changing gender roles for men and women, or the dilemma created by Section 230 of the 1996 Telecommunications Act. The material for your response should come directly from the assigned reading—but be entirely in your own words. Your answer should be in three distinct, clearly identifiable parts with a total of no less than 500 and no more than 600 words. Each section of your three-part answer should be separated and labeled.

Note: It is okay if you don’t include specific examples from the book since you don’t have it. I am looking for a general response regarding these topics. Thank you!

Essay – Summarizing & Analyzing Rhetorical Strategies

GOAL The goal of this essay is to accurately summarize another writer’s article and to analyze the writer’s rhetorical strategies. Your primary goal as a writer is to inform your reader about the content of the article and the writer’s rhetorical strategies. Your secondary goal as a writer is to appropriately determine the writer’s rhetorical effectiveness.

TOPIC Don’t Blame the Eater by David Zinzcenko

DIRECTIONS Summarize the writer’s main points. Focus on the writer’s points – what do “they say”? After summarizing the writer’s main points, present their rhetorical strategies – how do they attempt to convince their audience? Finally, explain whether or not the author’s rhetorical strategies are effective – do the rhetorical choices further the rhetorical goal(s) of the author’s article? Your essay is about what your article says, how it says it, and whether it is effective. Your essay is not an argument about the content of the article. You should not agree or disagree with the author at any point in your essay.

FORMAT The essay should be 3-5 full pages, typed and double spaced, and include a work cited page. The MLA-style works cited page should include the article you have chosen for a total of one (1) entries. The essay must include at least four quotations, which must be correctly formatted using MLA-style parenthetical citation, and at least four TS/IS templates, including at least one (1) to introduce a quotation (see p. 47) and one (1) to explain a quotation (see p. 47). You may not use any other sources for this essay. When you use quotes, make sure you “sandwich” them, as described in class and in Chapter 3 of TS/IS.

AUDIENCE As you write each part of your essay, assume that your audience (me and your classmates) may not be completely familiar with the essay you have chosen.

JD: Week 8 Discussion 1

Discussion 1 – Week 8COLLAPSEEvolution of Counterterrorism Strategies

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the U.S. government has struggled to develop a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy – one that balances diplomatic, informational, military, and economic approaches. Prior to these terrorist attacks, U.S. counterterrorism strategies were nearly non-existent. Terrorists were treated as criminals and law enforcement agencies were in control. Since 9/11 and in recognition of the growing threat of terrorism, the U.S. has increased combating efforts through changes in their counterterrorism strategies.

To prepare for this Discussion: see the attachments

Review Chapter 8 in the course text Introduction to Homeland Security and the excerpt “Counterterrorism” from the Encyclopedia of United States National Security. Focus on how U.S. counterterrorism strategies have evolved since 9/11.

Review the online articles “Targeted killing in U.S. Counterterrorism strategy and law” and “National Strategy for Combating Terrorism.” Reflect on contemporary counterterrorism strategies.

Review the NPR podcast “Calls renewed for better U.S. counterterrorism strategies” and the article “US Counter-Terrorism Options: A Taxonomy.” Consider the effectiveness of historical and contemporary counterterrorism strategies and how ineffective strategies might be improved.   Retrieved from http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6362624

Reflect on your thoughts as to whether or not the evolution of U.S. counterterrorism strategies has increased the effectiveness of U.S. counterterrorism efforts and why or why not.

Think about how historical counterterrorism strategies have influenced contemporary counterterrorism strategies.

Reflect on the extent to which contemporary counterterrorism strategies are effective and why or why not

Post by Day 3 an explanation of how U.S. counterterrorism strategies have evolved since 9/11. Then explain how historical counterterrorism strategies have influenced contemporary counterterrorism strategies. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation. Finally, explain the extent to which contemporary counterterrorism strategies are effective and why or why not. Again, be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

case study portfolio

Case Study Portfolio

For this assignment, you will be doing a case study of your job. You will take real-world experience and combine it with some research to create a portfolio that meshes reality with theory. One of the biggest things I will be looking at here is your ability to synthesize information and correctly use academic writing and citation. You will need to do some research and incorporate that information into your writing. You need to have at minimum 2 sources for each piece of this portfolio, so a total of 8 sources for the entire portfolio.

Some of the topic choices are things that we may have touched upon in Journals or Discussion posts. You may choose to use some of the information that you have already written for those previous assignments, but with revisions that are appropriate to this assignment. Otherwise, you will be writing fresh.

There will be several working parts to this assignment. You will work on them for the first half of the semester. The due date for the completed portfolio will be Sunday, June 24th  by 11:59 pm. I have given you several choices of things that you may include in your portfolio listed below. Please choose 4 of them to include in your portfolio. Each piece of your portfolio should be at minimum 400 words, for a total of 1600 words (not including works cited).

  1. An overview of your internship and the company. (This MUST be one of your four parts of the portfolio)
  2. Process Improvements- How is this company working to improve processes? Are there any processes that you are currently helping to streamline or change within your department?
  3. Hiring and Onboarding
  4. Communication Strategies
  5. Use of Technology
  6. Strategy Planning/Long Range Planning
  7. Employee Comfort/Recreation in the Workplace
  8. Remote Work
  9. Other- if you want to research something else, you must have me approve the topic before you begin writing

You will also have a works cited at the end of your portfolio that includes all of your research articles that you used. Please keep in mind that you need to use MLA or APA clearly throughout, including in your works cited.

NURSING – Evidence Based Practice Poster and Presentation (APA FORMAT and ZERO PLAGIARISM)

Individual Assignment-

Evidence Based Practice Poster and Oral Presentation

Objective: To help nursing students become accustomed to searching the literature for evidence that supports nursing practice, and to polish poster and oral presentation skills. This is an individual assignment.

Task: You are an experienced nurse who just signed a contract for a staff position at Passaway General Hospital. On your first month at work, you notice a few questionable nursing practices that you learned to do differently at your previous place of employment. As a BSN-prepared nurse, your unit manager has asked you to review the best evidence on the topic and create an A/V poster presentation for your colleagues on the unit. He has asked you record your presentation using YouTube so both night and day shifts can view it at their convenience.

Issues

 Nursing uniforms for proper identification

Plan:

1. Choose a topic  Nursing uniforms for proper identification

2. Review nursing, medical, and evidence-based practice literature related to your topic, following guidelines from the rubric to ensure you obtain information that addresses each section of the rubric.

3. Critically appraise the evidence you have located (refer to textbooks for instructions).

4. Synthesize information into the following areas using the rubric as a guide:

Purpose, Introduction, Search Methods, Findings (includes research literature and nursing guidelines) Nursing Implications, Conclusion

4. Create a Professional Poster: Create a professional scientific poster in MS Powerpoint, to be saved as a computer file (you do not need to have it printed) using a scientific poster template. Poster templates can be downloaded from many sources. Here are a few suggestions.

www.makesigns.com

www.posterpresentations.com

www.postersession.com

Use How to Create a Professional Poster in resources, as your guide for spacing, text size, headings, and content in your poster. Poster examples are also located in the resources tab.

Please Note: A good oral presentation should address each of the areas of the rubric below. However, your poster should not contain, word for word, everything in the rubric. The purpose of the poster is to highlight and summarize the information.

JD Week3: Assignment

Please see attachments

Application: Ungoverned Areas and Safe Havens

Terrorist groups often thrive in ungoverned areas and safe havens, where the ability of states to extend the rule of law is weak or non-existent. Ungoverned areas and safe havens range in their geographic locations within state and government boundaries. They are not only remote locations like the Philippine Archipelago, an ungoverned area characterized by rugged terrain used by terrorist groups such as Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). They can also be located in both urban and suburban areas such as Pakistan’s cities. In addition to these locations, there is evidence showing that terrorist groups also use cyberspace and the Internet to recruit and train terrorists and plan terrorist attacks. Ungoverned areas and safe havens provide terrorists groups with a location in which they can promote, train, and educate followers, protect their leaders, and plan future terrorist activities and movements.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the Chapter 4 article “The Ultimate Organization” in the course text Terrorism in Perspective. Reflect on the potential use of ungoverned areas for terrorist recruitment and training.
  • Review online “Chapter 5: Fragile States and Ungoverned Spaces” from the Institute for National Strategies Studies. Consider how ungoverned areas are used to promote and sustain terrorism.
  • Review the PBS video segment The Challenge Just Over the Border. Think about the influence of Afghanistan tribal, ungoverned areas, and safe havens have in promoting terrorism.
  • Reflect on examples of ungoverned areas and safe havens.
  • Consider how ungoverned areas and safe havens might sustain and promote terrorism.

The assignment (1–2 pages):

  • Briefly describe and provide an example of an ungoverned area.
  • Briefly describe and provide an example of a safe haven.
  • Explain the roles of ungoverned areas and safe havens in sustaining and promoting terrorism. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your explanation.

Eurocentrism and Life Span development

Assignment: Eurocentrism and Life Span Development Theories

Doctoral students often ask, “How do I decide what theory to use in my dissertation or DSW capstone study?” Sometimes, researchers select their theory based on the study population. For example, if a researcher is studying middle-age adults, it may make sense to use a life span development theory. Or perhaps the researcher is studying characteristics inherent to a particular stage of life; then it may also make sense to use a life span development theory. Before you choose a theory to apply to your study population, consider whether the theoretical concepts or constructs reflect a Western perspective and are insensitive to the needs of the target population. Some scholars, for example, have questioned whether theories developed by theorists who hold White European or Anglo-American cultural perspectives respect the values from other cultures that may be more collectivist. As you read the articles for this Assignment, pay particular attention to how Griffin, Mroczek, and Wesbecher critique the life span theories. To prepare:

  • Review the following articles from the Learning Resources:
    • “Living happily despite having an illness: Perceptions of healthy aging among Korean American, Vietnamese American, and Latino older adults” by Nguyen, Lee, Sorkin, and Gibbs.
    • “Personality Development Across the Lifespan: Theory, Research, and Application” by Griffin, Mroczek, and Wesbecher.
  • Using your potential doctoral capstone topic as a guide, identify a specific topic with which you can incorporate Levinson’s theory on midlife development or Neugarten’s theory on aging and one of the three diverse populations (Asian immigrants, Latino immigrants, or Native Americans). For example, if your topic is domestic violence, a specific topic that incorporates the above elements might be domestic violence among Latino immigrant elders.
By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 3-page analysis that addresses the following:

  • Identify your topic and its connection to a diverse population group.
  • In 2–3 sentences, briefly summarize the assumptions of the life span development theory you selected.
  • Describe the cultural values and belief systems of the group you chose, using literature to ground your claims.
  • Analyze the extent to which the assumptions of Levinson’s theory or Neugarten’s theory are culturally relevant to the group you selected.
  • Relative to the topic and population, describe one social work practice recommendation from each of the micro, meso, and macro levels when working with the population in relation to your topic or problem.
    • Remember that the social work practice recommendations need to be informed by the life span theory you selected.
  • Evaluate how the life span theory you selected is consistent with social work ethics.

Be sure to:

  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style, including double-spacing.
