NRNP WEEK 1

Discussion: Factors That Influence the Development of Psychopathology

In many realms of medicine, objective diagnoses can be made: A clavicula is broken.  An infection is present. TSH levels meet the diagnostic criteria for hypothyroidism. Psychiatry, on the other hand, deals with psychological phenomena and behaviors. Can these, too, be “defined objectively and by scientific criteria (Gergen, 1985), or are they social constructions?” (Sadock et al., 2015).

Thanks to myriad advances during recent decades, we know that psychopathology is caused by many interacting factors. Theoretical and clinical contributions to the field have come from the neural sciences, genetics, psychology, and social-cultural sciences. How do these factors impact the expression, classification, diagnosis, and prevalence of psychopathology, and why might it be important for a nurse practitioner to take a multidimensional, integrative approach?

To Prepare:
  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, considering the many interacting factors that contribute to the development of psychopathology.
  • Consider how theoretical perspective on psychopathology impacts the work of the PMHNP.
By Day 3 of Week 1

Explain the biological (genetic and neuroscientific); psychological (behavioral and cognitive processes, emotional, developmental); and social, cultural, and interpersonal factors that influence the development of psychopathology.

Week 1: History and Theories of Psychopathology

The history of the diagnosis of mental disorders is fraught with examples of how cultural norms and prejudices interfere with and warp a diagnosis. The result is that normal behavior and orientations have been pathologized as an illness or disease. An example of this would be the story of Alan Turing, the famous British computer scientist of the 20th century, who was instrumental in inventing modern computers and deciphering German code in World War II. He was convicted in 1952 in England of gross indecency for being gay. Turing was forced by the courts to undergo 12 months of hormone therapy and could no longer work for the British government. At the time, homosexuality was pathologized as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and was criminalized in most Western countries. It was not until 1973 that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) finally removed homosexuality from the DSM.

Historically, the process of rendering a diagnosis has been used to pathologize those who fell outside what was considered the cultural norm of human behavior. This process often marginalized diagnosed populations and prevented individuals from receiving appropriate care. It is of utmost importance to consider cultural issues that influence how you as a clinician interpret a client’s behavior and how cultural issues influence how a client may express behavior. This week, you explore the history of psychopathology and the evolution of theoretical perspectives in the field.

Learning Objective

Students will:

  •  Analyze historical and currently recognized biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that inform the expression, course, and prevalence of psychopathology

Statistics Assignment Lab

Scenario/Summary

This week’s lab highlights the use of graphics, distributions, and tables to summarize and interpret data.

Follow the directions below to find one of the given academic articles from the school library and then use that to describe the graphs and tables included. Further, you will describe other ways that the same data could be presented.

Deliverables

The deliverable is a Word document with your answers to the questions posed below based on the article you find.

Required Software

  • Microsoft Word
  • Internet access to read articles

Steps to Complete Week 3 Lab

PART 1:

Step 1: For our first broad-based search, choose one of the articles listed below that interests you.  Use the underlined words in your chosen article to search and see how many articles from the Pro-Quest Nursing database contain these underlined words (see the example below the article list)

Article Titles Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and pulse pressure: An evaluation of their joint effect on mortality

Step 2: Go to the school Library

Step 3: Click on the ProQuest Nursing link under the search box

Step 4: Type the underlined words from the article that you chose into the first search bar. Checkmark Full Text, Peer-Reviewed, and choose Last 12 Months from the drop-down list.  Last, choose English Language under the language section.

Step 5: Choose Search to see how many articles in the ProQuest database have those words.

Step 6: Post a screenshot of your search results (topic and the number of articles containing your search terms) to the top of a Word document [see Step 5 above]. Below the screenshot, answer the following questions:

On your search:

    A. What terms did you use?

    B. What other things did you mark on the search page before conducting your search?

C.Why did you choose the keywords that you did?

    D. How many articles were found with these search terms [from screenshot]?

Part 2:

Step 1: For our second more narrow search, go back and search using THE ENTIRE TITLE of the article you used the keywords from in your first search.  Paste the ENTIRE title into the search bar and find the full article [Do NOT checkmark anything to narrow your search this time!].

Step 2: Find a frequency table and/or graph within the article and post a screenshot in your Word document.

Example:

Frequency Distribution      OR            Graph

Step 3: Answer the following questions about your table and/or graph:

    A. What type of study is used in the article (quantitative or qualitative)?

    B. What type of graph or table did you choose for your lab? What characteristics make it this type?

    C. Describe the data displayed in your frequency distribution or graph (consider class size, class width,             total frequency, list of frequencies, class consistency, etc)

    D. Draw a conclusion about the data from the graph or frequency distribution you chose.

    E. How else might this data have been displayed? Discuss pros and cons of 2 other presentation options, such as tables or different graphical displays.

    F. Give the full APA reference of the article you are using for this lab.

Reference List

Review the “Reference List Example” in the topic study materials.

This assignment will help you prepare for the Topic 3 “Annotated Bibliography” and the Topic 4 “Three Pillars and Future Impact” assignments. Review the directions in Topic 3 and Topic 4 assignments for details.

Pick an industry (health care, marketing, retail, technology, etc.) with which you are familiar. Using Google Scholar, the GCU Library, or another reputable site, identify industry-relevant scholarly sources that support the three pillars concepts: servant leadership, ethics, and entrepreneurism. Refer to the topic study materials to determine what is considered a scholarly resource. Create a title page and a references list that cites nine references from the past five years. Include at the following types of references:

Five journal articles (include at least one article for each of the three pillars: servant leadership, ethics, and entrepreneurism)

One book

One website

One dissertation/thesis from a database

One book chapter

Home Appraisal: Ethics Brief 1

Scenario

You work for a U.S. based company that does home appraisals. While conducting an inspection on a home, you know the home has been contracted to sell for $50,000.00. You come to the conclusion that the home can appraise for $80,000.00. You also know that your sister has been looking for a home in this desirable neighborhood but most homes are well over six figures. You mention to the owner that your sister would be happy to pay $60,000.00 for the home and it would certainly appraise for that. You wink as you walk out the door, after handing the owner your card with your contact information. The owner calls you and says she would accept if your sister made an offer.

Instructions

Must be in APA format

  • Review the situation and conduct scholarly research on contract law. Write a brief in Microsoft Word (minimum two pages) that analyzes the legal and ethical issues involved in the business situation. Specifically, describe the legal theory of a claim, appropriate court level, classification of law, and likely ethical issues that exist.
  • Address the following:
  • What are the elements for a valid contract involving a real estate transaction? Do your comments to the owner constitute a valid contract? why or why not?
  • If the initial buyer wants to sue the homeowner for breach of contract, what court(s) would have jurisdiction and why?
  • If the initial buyer wants to sue you for intentional interference with contractual relations, what court(s) would have jurisdiction and why? Could the initial buyer sue your company? Why or why not?
  • What ethical issues are involved in this situation (consider any personal conflicts of interest and any professional obligations you owe to your company)?
  • Use at least three credible sources. These should be cited and in APA format.

WACC & Risk vs expected return trade-off.

Professional Assignment 2

PA2 included two parts: Part 1 about evaluating beta and WACC, and Part 2 is about data acquisition in preparation of the CLA2. You need to do both parts to demonstrate your comprehensive evaluation of the company’s opportunity cost as well as your skills in retrieving and organizing historical data on securities for the purpose of portfolio formation.

1. Search Yahoo Finance, or any other credible source to retrieve the most recent income statement and balance sheet for a major leveraged corporation.

a. Provide these statements in proper format and include a screenshot of the data.

b. Retrieve the data on the company’s historical data and calculate annual rate of return by using adjusted closing prices for the past 20 years. using adjusted closing values the past 20 years.

c. Using the data on the company’s stock rate of return and the index’s rate of return estimate beta of the corporation. Compare this value with the value stated by the source.

d. Retrieve the risk-free rate of return as the annual interest rate of US treasuries. Based on these values estimate the expected annual rate of return of the corporation’s security. Compare your estimate with the expected rate of return as evaluated based on your data in part b.

e. Using the financial statements mentioned above estimate the annual rate of interest paid by the corporation (cost of debt). Also, find the tax rate and capitalization ratio (proportions among equity and debt). Using these values that you have found estimate the annual weighted cost of capital (WACC) of the corporation.

2. This part of the assignment is in preparation for CLA2. Choose 5 major securities from different industries, among which one can be the one you chose in part 1 of the question, Retrieve the data on the companies’ historical data and calculate annual rate of return for the past 20 years for each security.

Provide your explanations and definitions in detail and be precise. Comment on your findings. Provide references for content when necessary. Provide your work in detail and explain in your own words. Support your statements with six (6) peer-reviewed in-text citation(s) and reference(s).

Presentation Requirements
1. SLIDE SETUP AND ORGANIZATION
Your presentation must include the following slides and sections:

Item 1: Title Slide
Your Title Slide should contain the following:

  • Project Name
  • Your Name
  • Instructor’s Name
  • Course name and section number

Item 2: Definition (Section 1)
Item 3: Description of the Topic (Section 2)
Item 4: Illustration of the Topic (Section 3)
Item 5: Summary Slide
Item 6: Question Slide (this is where the audience is invited to ask questions). You will only need to include a “Title Only” slide.
Item 7: References Slide(s) (Your References MUST be in APA format)!

2. PRESENTATION LENGTH
Minimum of 10 slides; Maximum of 15 slides.
(Title and Reference slides do not count toward the total slide count).
NOTE 2: Going over 10 slides is fine, but if you are under 10 you will be penalized 10% (one letter grade) for every 2 slides you are under the 10-slide minimum.
3. SLIDE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
a. Keep it Simple: Slides must be easy to read and uncluttered. Keep in mind the 7 x 7 rule with presentation software, which effectively states no more than 7 words per bullet and 7 bullets per slide.
b. Images: Pictures and images should be used sparingly to avoid distraction from the main contents. Include at least one table, graph, or image of an appropriate size that is relevant and supports the information provided in your paper. Feel free to create the image if you like, but it must be professional.
c. Fonts: Make sure you use Visual Hierarchy when designing your slides (an example would be Using a 36-point font for your slide title, 28-point font for main points, and 24-point font for secondary points).
d. Footer: Include the slide number, title of your presentation, and your name in the footer (except on title slide).
e. Background: Appropriate for the presentation. Use creativity here, but your background color or design must not detract from the readability of the slides. A bad example would be using dark text against a dark background. Make sure the background and font colors are a good contrast.
f. Contrast: Appropriate Foreground-Background Segregation (use dark text against a light background or white or light colored text against a dark background. This creates contrast.
4. PRESENTATION NARRATION
Add “Narration” to each and every Slide in your presentation.
Present your presentation as if you were giving it to a LIVE AUDIENCE. In addition to designing each slide, provide the transcript of the words you would actually say, word-for-word while each slide is being displayed.
Adding Narration
You can accomplish this in several ways, including:
a. Adding Text Narration to the Notes Section of each slide, OR
b. Adding Voice Narration to each slide (Export the Narration as a .MOV file).

Project Charter

Please review the attachment of the part has been done, and finish the rest.

Here is the request & the case:

Choose one of the 11 projects from the portfolio of projects in the Queensland Food Corp case and prepare a project charter using the template provided.  As you learned in Unit 2, there are a variety of projects (efficiency, market extension, new product, compliance, and new markets).  Choose one that resonates with most members of your group.

For charter content information not available in the case study, your group (using brainstorming and research by the support group members), develop your best ideas of what the paragraph would include so that it addresses all of the required content contained in the template.

Content:  (90 points)  The charter should be at least 2, but not more than 3 pages (excluding the key stakeholder list).   Each of the 13 sections will be evaluated for completeness and quality (i.e., realistic content) as it relates to the project selected.  Your group can make some assumptions about content in each paragraph where information is not available in the case.

At least 5 key stakeholders must be identified.

Your Instructor will use Turn-it-in to ensure your paper is authentic work.  To avoid plagiarism, see the course home page for more information and use the Purdue Online Writing Lab to learn how to paraphrase, summarize and cite the references you use in all academic writing assignments.

Mechanics (10 points) It is expected that the charter will have excellent mechanics (presentation, grammar and spelling) exhibit the quality of work capable of a group of graduate students and working professionals. All sections of the charter must be readable at 100% magnification.

A strategy for completing this assignment:

Read the project description and meet as a group to discuss gaps in information.  After discussion, assign each person to research missing information for each section.  Some sections of the charter, such as “overall project risk” will require you to read up on the topic.

The PMBOK 6e is the primary reference recommended for completing this assignment.

Each group member should write a draft of each section using a collaborative document (e.g., Office365 cloud-based MS Word).   Don’t overweight one paragraph at the expense of other paragraphs with respect to how much content each contains.  Two to 3 pages will require you to think critically about what content to include versus what is not high- or summary-level.

After drafts of all questions are complete, everyone should meet to walk through and discuss the results before finalizing the charter.

As a reminder, the case study follows:

Personal Perspective

PLEASE READ FULL INSTRUCTIONS. NO PLAGIARISM! NO QUOTES, MUST PARAPHRASE. I WILL CHECK FOR RECYCLED WORK AND PLAGIARISM, SO WILL THE TEACHERS. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS DUE 07/11/21 AT 9PM PST. IF YOU CANT MEET THIS DEADLINE, DONT AGREE TO DO MY ASSIGNMENT. PRICE ISNT NEGOTIABLE. PLEASE READ GRADING RUBRIC. TEACHERS USE THE GRADING RUBRIC TO DETERMINE GRADE. IF DIRECTIONS ARENT BEING FOLLOWED, I WILL DISPUTE RIGHT AWAY. LETS AVOID THAT.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, please read the Biological Basis of Determinants of Health (Links to an external site.) article. In this assignment, you will be creating a video presentation responding to the scenario described below regarding genetic technology.

In the very near future, it may be possible to use something like a smartphone that contains information on your genetics so you can be updated on a regular basis about the potential risk you have for developing certain diseases. (e.g., “The forecast for today is light rain and your risk for heart disease is at 50% by age 42”). Additionally, while current genetic technology allows us to see the sex a person is born with, it may soon be possible, given the developments that are occurring in genetic research, to also identify gender identity and even sexual partner preference on a spectrum.

Imagine that you have been asked to address this possibility at a conference by addressing the following questions from a public health perspective:

  • What do you personally think about genetic information being tracked and shared?
  • What do you think about this information from a professional standpoint?
  • What are some potential benefits to such a possibility?
  • What are some potential drawbacks to such a possibility?
  • What are other potential public health applications for such a possibility?
  • Given that epigenetics acknowledges that not all genes would be expressed even if present, would this type of technology still carry value?

 In your Personal Perspective assignment,

Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Assignment 2: Analyzing Theories of Crime

Assignment 2: Analyzing Theories of Crime

You are an investigative reporter for a large news network. You are working on a news piece identifying how theories of crime explain specific crimes including the demographics of perpetrators and victims. You are required to make a thirty-minute presentation to your producers to convince them to run your story.

Choose a specific crime from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program at the following:

Research this crime using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Be sure to include the UCR and other crime reports in your research

Based on your research, develop a presentation that addresses the following:

  • Define the crime. Include both the legal definition and others as necessary.
  • Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Gender
    • Ethnicity
    • Socioeconomic characteristics
    • Other relevant diversity issues
  • Choose two theories of the causes of crime that have been discussed and analyzed so far in the course; apply those theories to the selected crime. Be sure to cover the following:
    • Explain the type of each theory in detail.
    • Discuss the development of each theory and the main theorists associated with them.
    • Compare and contrast the two theories of crime selected. Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime.
  • Based on your research, develop your own hypothesis of the cause of this crime. Using the theories that you have chosen, you can develop your own “combination” theory.
  • Give valid reasons and scholarly, peer-reviewed sources in support of your theory.

You are allowed to present your theory in first person; however, be careful not to abuse this privilege.

Your presentation should include the following:

  • A title slide and a reference slide (these will not count towards the total number of slides).
  • At least five sentences of speaker notes for each section to clarify anything not included in the slides. (As this is a presentation the slides should cover the main points and the details should be covered in the speaker’s notes.) The speaker notes should be properly referenced.

Develop a 10–15-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.
