The two basic needs—physiological (or biological, such as breathing, sleeping, and so on) and safety (such as health)—are often at the root of anxiety, frustration, anger, or fear. Once you understand that a person’s reaction is based on a physiological or safety need, it is often easier to respond to them and ease their concerns. Focus on these two needs for your assignment.

• Physiological needs: These are biological requirements for human survival (e.g., air, food, water, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep). If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow considered physiological needs the most important because all of the other needs become secondary until these needs are met. 
• Safety needs: Once an individual’s physiological needs are satisfied, the need for security and safety become salient. People want to experience order, predictability, and control in their lives. These needs can be fulfilled by family and society (e.g., police, schools, businesses, and medical care).

Case Study

Mary Smith handles the billing for Dr. Major’s busy primary care practice. Patients are sent to Mary to give her information about their insurance coverage, to make payment arrangements, and to pay their portion of office visits. One day, she is collecting a payment from an elderly patient, Mr. Lee, who came to Dr. Major for treatment of arthritis. He moved to the United States from a small island in China a few years ago. The patient is visibly upset. Mary asks if Mr. Lee is all right. He says, “Everything here is so rush-rush. The doctor has no time. How am I supposed to feel better if I can’t spend enough time with the doctor?” 

When answering the questions below, please know that Mr. Lee has not been sleeping well and has been ill for some time. How would you respond to the questions below knowing what you know about Mr. Lee and Maslow’s theory? There is no need to cite the article or text.

Use this template to answer the following questions:

• How can Mary appropriately respond to the patient, knowing that he has been ill for a while (safety need hasn’t been met) and he hasn’t been sleeping (physiological or biologic need hasn’t been met)? 
• Are there questions she might ask him to learn more about his feelings?

Managers must understand that success may hinge on an astute analysis of ethical business practices and how a particular philosophical approach to ethics can affect an organization’s ethical standing abroad.

A business manager in a corporation involved with international business faces numerous challenges. One that seems particularly challenging is the issue of business ethics. Most would agree that it is difficult to come up with a single definition of ethics that would be agreed to across all countries and cultures. Thus by definition, a business manager involved with international business faces challenges at the most basic level, which is how to define business ethics, and then even more prominently how to interpret, monitor, and ensure appropriate compliance with policies put in place. It is very common to see business news headlines of some company (even a highly respected company) suddenly facing a major issue (often, a crisis) associated with ethics.

As a way to help manage this, Apple Computer put a “Supplier Responsibility” program in place, whereby they try to ensure all of their suppliers are meeting the policies they have defined, including particularly those related to business ethics (Hyatt, 2011). It is clear that Apple’s program requires a major investment, including auditing their suppliers and then taking whatever action is deemed appropriate, even terminating their relationships with some suppliers.

Foreign investment is yet another area that is both complex and controversial. On one hand, business managers might consider it an appropriate strategy to own (or at least invest in) organizations that they are involved with, regardless of if those organizations are in their “home country” or not, so as to have better control over how that organization operates (at both the strategic and tactical levels). On the other hand, many governments have laws in place that restrict or control various types of “foreign ownership.” One interesting company related to this topic is Schlumberger, the very large oil services company. Schlumberger’s culture is truly multi-national, and their managers perceive the company as a “world” company rather than one associated with a given country. They do business in most countries in the world and attempt to distance themselves from politics and many country-specific issues. Most would likely say that Schlumberger is highly respected and successful on a global basis and has established a fairly unique culture in the context of globalization.

  Background of the Assignment: You have been recognized as an expert on financial analysis. As such, you have been hired to conduct a review of a company’s latest consolidated financial statement and make recommendations to leadership based upon your findings.
  You will need to research and then choose a health care organization (see list of suggested organizations below), review their latest annual report and identify operational challenges, and opportunities, which entails providing a financial analysis of their financial statements. You should provide the following information on the organization as well as an analysis of the organization’s financial statements to develop a comprehensive business

Some of the factors that make me tend more toward mental health are having more experience in mental health in nursing, enjoying learning about psychology, and the need for more advocacy for people who suffer from mental illness. Some struggles that I face with choosing a career in mental health are increased risk of being harmed by violent patients, increased risk of emotional exhaustion, and sometimes my role as a nurse not being taken seriously as other specialty nurses because I am mental health nurse.

Since most psychiatric patients become agitated and violent if unmedicated and lack therapy. There are certain safety precautions that facilities use and ways to de-escalate violent patients. Where I work, my fellow coworkers and I were taught CPI training to properly defend ourselves in a safe manner that will not harm the patient. CPI training teaches ways to defend against physical attacks and how to properly do holds when needed without hurting the patient. My hospital does not do restraints. We try to start with verbal de-escalation first if possible and then last resort to physical holds per doctor’s order. 

Sometimes there are times that being in mental health is emotionally overwhelming. If one does not take time for a proper work-life balance, mental health can take its toll on your personal mental and psychical health as your relationships and family. One must take time out to spend time with family and loved ones. Personally, I feel that if I do not have self-care first that it makes it difficult to take care of others.
