Final
Project – Discussion Board Briefing Instructions

In this class we have only one Discussion Board and this discussion board and related replies make
up your final project.   The discussion
board will be comprised of an original post and reply posts.  This discussion board is research-based and
will require significant outside journal article reading.

Your original thread will be based on the prompt
below.  Your original thread shall be 800
to 1,200 words with a minimum of 5 properly formatted citations (this does not
include title page, abstract, attachments, or reference section).  The thread must be submitted in the Discussion Board Forum’s textbox
and as well as an attached properly formatted, current APA Word
document.  The original post shall be
completed by Wednesday of the week assigned (week 8).

You will post a 250-word reply to 2 classmate’s
threads. The reply requires a minimum of 1 properly formatted citation. Each
reply must be completed by you, the individual student. The reply posts are due
the last day of the week assigned (Friday of Week 8).

Responding to a classmate’s post requires both the
addition of new ideas and analysis. A particular point made by the classmate
must be addressed and built upon by your analysis in order to move the
conversation forward
. Thus, the response post is a rigorous assignment that
requires you to build upon initial posts to develop deeper and more thorough
discussion of the ideas introduced in the initial posts. As such, reply posts
that merely affirm, restate, or unprofessionally quarrel with the previous
post(s) and fail to make a valuable, substantive contribution to the discussion
will receive appropriate point deductions.

Reference expectations:

You must use a minimum
of 5 recent relevant sources.  You may
use .gov sources as your recent and relevant sources as long as the writing is
academic in nature (authored works) or well researched (CIA or State
Department.  Although the rigor of the
quality references is not as demanding as your previous papers – you will still
be graded on your reference quality.  If
you have questions about the applicability of references contact your professor
prior to turning in your discussion board/paper.

This course utilizes the Post-First feature in all
Discussion Board Forums. This means you will only be able to read and interact
with your classmates’ threads after you have submitted your thread in
response to the provided prompt. For additional information on Post-First,
click
here for a tutorial.

Warning:

This Discussion Board is not a traditional 350 to 500
word original and 250 word reply posts.
This discussion board is your final project and represent a major
research project.  800 to 1,200 words is
3 to five pages of writing.

Discussion Board Prompt:

You are a university professor preparing to bring a
group of Liberty University students to a foreign country as part of your
comparative criminal justice systems class.

W8REPLY

**REPLY TO EACH POST 100 WORDS MIN EACH***

1. Throughout this course we have learned that the terms CBRN and WMD are interchangeable and can be best defined as any chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weaponized variant capable of producing immense destruction and large-scale casualties. Of the various types, chemical weapons really stood out to me as interesting because of their historical use in warfare, specifically mustard gas (HD) in World War I. It belongs to the sub classification of chemical weapons known as blister agents and although it does not always cause death, sulfur mustard, whether it is ingested, inhaled or makes contact with the skin can have adverse effects on the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, bone marrow, and mucous membranes of the body (CDC, 2018). Being a vesicant, it can be dispersed through any medium and has the ability to cause serious long term impairment of individuals through permanent blindness, chronic respiratory infections, lung cancer, and extensive third degree burns which is why the Chemical Weapons Convention banned the use, sale, and production of it in 1993. It is relatively easy, compared to the implementation of a radiological or nuclear device, for a terrorist organization to acquire the source materials and have the knowledge to create it. Iraq’s repeated chemical bombing of Iran’s Halabja district in 1988 and Syria’s use of chlorine gas against their own people in 2014 stand as recent examples of why mustard gas, or other forms of chemical weapons are of a higher threat level. Their simplicity, availability, and ability to be dispersed in multiple manners appeal to rogue nations and terrorist organizations alike. Prevention methods to diminish the associated risks include training and equipping individuals to be able to utilize personnel protective gear such as gas masks and hazmat suits, providing in place shelters capable of defending against gas exposure, tracking the buying and selling of toxic industrial resources, and limiting the knowledge available on how to produce such (although I am certain the latter would be the hardest with the development of the internet and information sharing).

2.Hello Classmates. I have chosen to discuss chlorine again because it is one of the most common chemicals that most people have in their homes right now. Chlorine’s most dangerous form is in its gaseous state but it is also used to clean pools, sanitize surfaces, and clean clothes. We even use it to decontaminate drinking water in water treatment plants. Injuries can be caused from eye exposure, skin exposure, inhalation, and ingestion (CDC, 2020). The chemical was used in World War I effectively as a chemical weapon. The chlorine gas was put into fuel tanks similar to the ones used today for propane. Since the gas is heavier than air, it would settle into the trenches where soldiers were hiding. This would force them out of the trenches to be shot fleeing or be forced to succumb to the chemical. I do believe that future threats of chlorine being used as a weapon is very possible. Not only is chlorine very common and can be bought in large quantities, but the United States is one of the biggest suppliers of the chemical world-wide. This requires us to ship more than 15 million tons of the chemical over long distance through public and unprotected routes every year. (Jones, Wills, & Kang, 2010). Protecting these routes should be made a priority. The United States has already decreased production locations to 20 states and has implemented regulations, but we appear to have less prevention after the chemical has been produced and is in transport. I think focusing on that aspect would further protect our country and our citizens.

3. I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with each and every one of you during this course. I have learned so much about the difference between the Law Enforcement Community and the Intelligence Community. My view was so narrow before as I have only ever interacted with the Intelligence Community. One of the main challenges the Intelligence Community faces in supporting the Homeland Security Enterprise is potentially violating American civil liberties. There are a lot of laws dictating what these agencies can and cannot do when it comes to collection within the United States. Domestic terrorism can be a very serious challenge especially when it comes to investigating terrorist activity from United States citizens. Currently, the Intelligence Community has a good balance with the Homeland Security Enterprise as far as support. I believe the two have a relationship were the information and missions coming from each side can be fused together to meet an objective. There are also several middle men like fusion centers. In regards to the last question about the IC being able to adapt to emerging threats, its’ hard to say for sure. Unfortunately, these agencies have a reputation from learning from their mistakes. It’s also very hard to judge how an agency will respond to a threat when you haven’t actually seen something play out in the real world. All and all, the IC and LEC always need to keep American civil liberties at the front of their mind in every operation. We cannot protect the American people if we are somehow violating their privacy

4. Just like with any federal agency the Intelligence Community also faces challenges. One of the main challenges that the Intelligence Community faces in supporting the Homeland Security Enterprise seems to be the balancing act of ensuring the Americans United States Constitutional rights are not withheld in the name of intelligence collection. I feel as though most people would not have any contingencies if the government is invading the privacy of a foreign non-citizen of the United States. However, when it comes to actual Americans rights it calls for a little more caution in the way intelligence collection process is conducted. I understand that security is important and when there is probable cause on a suspect then so be it, however, it is crucial to ensure the proper steps are taken and that we do not cut corners when it comes to an Americans rights. In fact, this same concept is supposed to be embedded in all of the Intelligence Community efforts per the National Intelligence Strategy, “The Intelligence Community must exemplify America’s values: operating under the rule of law, consistent with Americans’ expectations for protection of privacy and civil liberties, respectful of human rights, and in a manner that retains the trust of the American people.” (Office of the Director of National Intelligence)

5. There are many different initiatives that have been implemented from the PATRIOT ACT. The 1st of many of this initiative was ” The Patriot Act allows investigators to use the tools that were already available to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking”.((The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty) This 1st initiative gave  law enforcement the same ability as if they going after the mafia towards investigating terrorist.  The next initiative was ” The Patriot Act facilitated information sharing and cooperation among government agencies so that they can better connect the dots”. (The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty )With this initiative it got rid of the major legal issues that was preventing law enforcement, intelligence, and national defense communities form having to talk and coordinate their work to help protect our national security. (The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty) A third initiative that came from the Patriot Act was ” The Patriot Act updated the law to reflect new technologies and new threats”.(The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty) This initiative allowed the Patriot Act to bring the law up to date with the latest technology, this way we are not using out of date equipment to use against the digital age. (The USA Patriot Act: Preserving Life and Liberty ) A fourth initiative that was implemented from the result of the Patriot Act, was that ” The Patriot Act increased the penalties for those who commit terrorist crimes.” This initiative created tougher penalties for those who were accused of supporting or committing  crimes toward terrorisms.

6. The Patriot Act was put into place following 9/11 with the goal of prevent another such attack. the primary initiatives are to “deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and other purposes, some of which include: To strengthen U.S. measures to prevent, detect and prosecute international money laundering and financing of terrorism; To subject to special scrutiny foreign jurisdictions, foreign financial institutions, and classes of international transactions or types of accounts that are susceptible to criminal abuse; To require all appropriate elements of the financial services industry to report potential money laundering; To strengthen measures to prevent use of the U.S. financial system for personal gain by corrupt foreign officials and facilitate repatriation of stolen assets to the citizens of countries to whom such assets belong.” (DNI.gov, US patriot act, paragraph 2).  Balancing security and civil liberties is a very difficult task. Something I feel often gets overlooked, especially in the name security or safety is the voice of the people. If you want to maintain peoples civil liberties then they have to be included in the rule making. With the Patriot Act, there was good intent when it was put into place. Later it was determined that parts of it violated civil liberties. If we the people would have been included in the decision making and the vote for that then that never would have been included. I feel it is often forgotten that the people control the government not the other way around. If the government remembers that then that is the best way to balance security and civil liberties. – Tayler

Keys to the Assignment

The following instructions are adapted from Project Kaleidoscope.

Write your vision (2-3 pages)

Imagine it is 10 years into the future. You feel that you have achieved your potential and become the leader you have always wanted to be. Write a story to describe your vision of yourself.

Do not get hung up on past accomplishments and future plans, and do not worry about barriers. Use some of these questions to guide your thinking:

  • What is your typical day like?
  • Who do you interact with?
  • What are you thinking about?
  • What are you feeling?
  • What skills do you possess?

While you are dreaming, think about your legacy. Imagine yourself at the end of your career. What do you want people to say about you after you are gone? How must you start living now in order for that to happen?

When you have finished writing your story, summarize the visionso it is easy to remember. Think of something or someone that symbolizes it. This summary should be no longer than three or four sentences and should be denoted in the paper by a separate heading. Keeping your personal vision in mind is highly motivating.

Identify obstacles (2-3 pages)

Internal obstacles are thoughts, opinions, and beliefs that can prevent you from moving forward. External obstacles are situations or conditions outside of yourself that can prevent you from achieving your goals. Make a chart comparing the internal and external barriers you see as standing in the way of achieving your vision.

Nearly all internal barriers are within your control. The barriers outside of your control are largely external. These are things you have no influence over. It is fruitless to fret over barriers you cannot control. Focus on the ones you have some control over.

There are three proven techniques for dealing with obstacles:

  • Decide what you are willing to give up in order to eliminate the obstacle.
  • Identify hidden opportunities or strategies that could help you face the obstacle.
  • Chunk the problem into manageable pieces, so you can deal with each smaller piece separately. You could also compromise. This would enable you to accomplish two seemingly independent tasks or goals at once.

How will you overcome your obstacles?

confidential data

Suppose you have been hired by your city’s police department. The police department asks you to develop a program that matches arrest records with court records. In addition, the program must show the ultimate outcome or the verdict for each case. You have been given access to all police databases records so you can start testing the new system that you are developing.

A friend of yours works for an important multinational company, in the human resources department. Your friend must perform background checks of potential employees. (Job seekers sign a form authorizing this review). The police records are open to the public and your friend might look for them at the courthouse, but it would take many hours per week to complete this task. As a convenience, should you provide your friend with the results of any arrest records of job applicants?

Suppose that some data is incorrect, and an applicant is not hired. Would you feel responsible?

Because we have been hired by the city’s police department, the ease of access to data for us will be more easier and swift as compared to any outsider. Despite this fact, we cannot break certain rules and regulations based on the code of conduct and the integrity with which we must hold the position of a police department. As per the rules we must not let out the confidential data in a manner despite the person who is asking is an acquaintance. The person seeking any information must apply for the data as per the standard operating procedure. This is the correct functional way of seeking data from the police department. No favor must be meted out to anyone in this regard. If any mishap happens, we will be blamed for absolutely no fault of ours. In such critical issues it is best to operate as per the standard procedures. Keeping this is mind, we must not provide our friend with results of any arrest records of the job applicants for convenience.

Constructing an arguement

QUESTIONS: Be sure to use at least two primary sources and one secondary source from the list, and one primary or secondary source you find through research of the databases listed above. The textbook counts as a secondary source, as do the articles by historians. Introductions to the primary sources, written by historians/editors of the primary source collections, fall under the secondary source category as well.

Be sure to check with me if you have any questions about which sources count as primary and as secondary. It is extremely important that you meet the source requirement in order to receive a passing grade.

1.  Question: Consider The Narrative of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Written by Herself, by Harriet Jacobs as works of abolitionist literature. How did Douglass and Jacobs attempt to convince their readers to oppose slavery? Were these arguments that Douglass and Jacobs used against slavery primarily similar, or different, and why?

Note: Students should provide historical context for the abolition movement. Students might use the Slavery and Anti-Slavery database to provide this context.

Aviation incident case study paper do tonight

 ase Studies:

The case studies are intended to help you gain knowledge in the following areas:

1. Aircraft accident report requirements and writing.
2. Accident investigation requirements and the problems associated with an investigation.
3. Critical thought involving aviation safety issues.

Each case study should address the following questions:

1. What happened to cause the accident?
2. Why did the accident happen?
3. What can be done to prevent this type of accident?
4. A discussion of the deficiencies (political, technical, or investigative) of the accident investigation report.
5. The aviation safety issues associated with the accident.

Case studies should be no more than four pages long. The first and second page should review what happened and why the accident happened. The third and fourth pages should address recommendations to prevent such accidents from happening and the weaknesses of the accident report. These weaknesses may result from the lack/loss of evidence, lack of investigation technology, political constraints, or just a poor investigation. Aviation safety issues should also be discussed.

General Rules and Tips:

1. Always write in third person; never first person.
2. Do not copy an Aviation Accident Report verbatim: Summarize.
3. Do not include extraneous material in your case study.
4. If you quote the works or ideas of another, you must give appropriate credit.

Movie Review-Dreams

Dreams

After watching Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams and reviewing all materials in this week’s Content unit, address at least three of the following questions, separately or in combination. You may also take the conversation in new directions. Be sure to apply concepts studied in this week’s reading.

  1. Are you familiar with other movies directed by Akira Kurosawa or other Japanese films? How did your experience of those films shape your expectations of Dreams? If you had not watched other Japanese films, were you surprised by this one? How?
  2. Provide examples of patterns or motifs in in one or more of the dreams. What is the purpose of these patterns? What are the reactions viewers are likely to have?
  3. What is the main point concerning the creative process of art as presented in “Crows”?
  4. The different dreams use very different lighting and color? What is the effect of lighting and color in one or more of these dreams?
  5. Discuss realism and anti-realism in one or more dreams. Where do they alternate between the two modes? Why do you think the film-makers made those choices? Do the dreams maintain verisimilitude?
  6. Does the director manipulate our experience of time and space? How? What is the purpose? Please provide specific examples.

Interview Guide

For this assignment, you will develop a 2–4-page interview guide for a research study, focusing on issues of work–life balance for online learners in a business or technology program. The questions in the interview guide must: Be conceptually valid, Flow logically from the concepts and theories that you plan to explore in your research, Generate the type of data you are seeking.

Note: You can also use articles apart from the attached articles but make sure to use the attached articles,

For this assignment, review the articles attached about work–life balance and online learners. The research purpose you construct in the next step must be developed from concepts described in one or more of these articles.

Instructions

1.  Construct a research purpose statement based on selected references that is informed by an abbreviated theoretical framework and includes the research methodology and a construct of the central phenomenon, experience/event, or process that will be the focus of the study. To do this, develop a research purpose using an abbreviated theoretical framework. The research purpose must be developed from concepts described in one or more of the articles on work–life balance for online learners. Use the following research purpose template adapted from Creswell (2009) to develop your research purpose statement:(1 PAGE)

The purpose of this _________________ (exploratory/generic qualitative inquiry, phenomenological, case study, grounded theory, Delphi) research is to ________ (understand, describe, develop, discover) the ________ (central phenomenon, experience/event, process) for online learners in a business or technology doctoral program informed by the ________(theoretical framework). At this stage in the research, the ______ (central phenomenon, experience/event, process) being studied will be generally defined as ____________ (provide a credibly supported definition).

2.  Construct a research question or questions, and sub-questions, as needed. The questions must clearly align with the research purpose statement, use constructs from the purpose statement, and be characteristic of the chosen methodology. Specifically, as you write the research questions, ensure. There is a clear link between the research purpose and research questions. The questions must explicitly speak to the phenomenon, experience/event, or process and the associated constructs under study. The constructs in the questions are identical to those discussed in the purpose and the selected theoretical framework. The primary research question re-casts the purpose in question form. Sub-questions, if needed, represent deeper or further inquiry into relevant sub-issues such as constructs of the overarching phenomenon, experience/event, or processes under study. The research questions are characteristic of the research methodology and align with the methodological approach (exploratory/generic qualitative inquiry, phenomenological, case study, grounded theory, Delphi) identified in the research purpose.(1 PAGE)

3.  Develop 8–10 open-ended interview questions that will be responsive to the research question and are appropriate for the collection of data from your population. Order the questions to promote logical interview flow, ease of interaction, and rapport-building between the interviewer and interviewees. Be sure the questions flow logically from the research purpose and research question, are suitably worded for your population (online learners), and will successfully capture the data you seek in response to your research question.(1 PAGE)

4.  Construct a chart to show how each proposed question relates to the research purpose, research question, and key concepts or theories.Be sure to use wording that is clear and suitable for your population (sample of participants), yet is consistent with good scholarly writing and free of grammatical or other mechanical errors.(1 PAGE)

Must include 7-8 references related to focusing on issues of work–life balance for online learners in a business or technology program

Submission Requirements

Your assignment should meet the following requirements:

·  Written communication: Written communication must be grammatically correct and free of errors that detract from the overall message. Writing should be consistent with graduate-level scholarship.
