Biomedial Sciences in Nursing

Theories from the biomedical sciences have shaped nursing practice, as well as research, throughout the years. In order to engage in the highest level of practice and aid in addressing current and future issues in health care, it is important for nurses to become more cognizant of these theories.
For this Discussion, you will differentiate among theories within the basic, or pure, sciences, and consider how they may be applied to improve outcomes in health care.

To prepare:

  • Review the concepts and principles of the various biomedical theories and models presented in this week’s Learning Resources, and consider how they influence clinical practice. Which biomedical theories and models are used most frequently in health care? How do they relate to improved health outcomes? Reflect on your specific practice area and identify at least one biomedical theory or model that is utilized.

By Day 3 post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

  • Describe one biomedical theory or model frequently used in health care and provide your rational for how it relates to improved patient outcomes.
  • Describe one biomedical theory or model that is utilized in your specific practice area. Provide at least two examples related to its application

Final Proposal Project

Hide Assignment InformationTurnitin®Turnitin® enabledThis assignment will be submitted to Turnitin®.Instructions

Final Proposal Project:

Please find the rubric attached.

Each student will be required to complete the term project, which is a research proposal written in an APA Style. The project should have at least 8-10 pages of substance not counting the cover and reference page. Please include a Cover Page, an abstract and a list of references. The research proposal you write in this course will NOT be sent to the IRB for approval. This is because you will not be conducting actual research for the purpose of this class. You will, however, gain an insight as to how to write a research proposal.

Each student will be required to complete a research proposal, as the term project. The research proposal will include the following:

  • Title page
  • Abstract (100-120 words)
  • Introduction
  • Problem Statement
  • Purpose Statement
  • Hypothesis
  • Literature Review and Definitions included in the research
  • Research methods/design
  • References
  • Appendices – as needed (annotated bibliography, example consent form, example survey if used)

The research proposal (Term Project) must be in a Word Document (.doc) uploaded to the student’s folder through the assignment section. Students will be required to use at least five scholarly references in their work.

Students are required to follow APA Style guidelines.

Please make sure that you are using the course-writing rubric to use as a checklist so that you write a solid paper.

Students must use a topic, which was approved by the instructor or their research proposal.

Do not include quotes in your work. The student needs to display good critical thinking skills and not a string of quotes written by published authors. Your proposal is what is needed for a successful research project to be conducted in the future.

Do not wait to the last minute to research, write, format, and edit. Proper time management is required to turn in a quality research proposal that highlights your understanding of how to conduct scholarly research.

Your Term Project must be submitted by the end of week 8. No late submissions will be accepted past the official end of the semester.

Based upon the assigned readings and presentations, you will answer all questions using current APA formatting (Times New Roman, 12- point font, and double spaced). All answers must be compiled in a Word document. Citations from the assigned reading are required in answering the questions. The written assignments must include at least one reference(s) in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. Each answer must be comprehensive, with sport related current examples. Each question must be answered with 400–500 words. Select 4 of the following questions to answer. Critical thinking must be demonstrated in each answered question.

  1. Should coaches be fired for running up the score? What do cases suggest about good sporting behavior.
  2. Does sport play a positive role in promoting diversity and equal opportunity?
  3. To equalize the number of scholarships for men and women at Universities, should leaving out football out of Title IX an equitable solution? If not, what other ideas would you for an athletic director who faces the increasing cost without an increasing budget.
  4. What moral lessons have you learned from participating in sport?
  5. Do players have any ethical obligations to their sport, their fans, and the media?
  6. Has Title IX changed our views on gender logic in our society?
  7. Why is using a team name such as the fighting Sioux or the Redskins a problem?
  8. How can sports challenge the views of race logic and help transform racial and ethical relations?

victimologists 300 words

The job profile of correctional officers includes security and inmate accountability. They are responsible for preventing disturbances, physical attacks, and escapes by the prisoners or inmates. The job profile of correctional officers can make them both sympathetic as well as hateful towards victims. They may be sympathetic because they deal with perpetrators who have been victimized.

In this context, do you think it is essential to educate correctional officers on the field of victimology? The study of why certain people are victims of crime is known as victimology. It also includes the study of how lifestyle makes certain people more susceptible to be victims. Author Susan Sontag wrote the following quotation on victims: “Victims suggest innocence. And innocence, by the inexorable logic that governs all relational terms, suggests guilt”

Is the quotation in the context of the study of victimology, acceptable? Why? Have you witnessed any situations in your life that would support or rebut this quotation? Provide two such instances from your personal life to substantiate your agreement or disagreement.

Can officers working with the same criminal populations have differing views on victims? Can victimologists help correctional officers or do victimologists and correctional officers form an unnatural team? Why? Support your rationale with research-based examples or real-life experiences.

Quantitative and qualitative research methodologies

Another reflection, everyone…this one will help you to discover (or re-discover?) your own approach to advanced inquiry…Here is your prompt:
Recall in the Module 3 section titled, Differences in Research Methodologies, I described having all 3 research methodologies in my portfolio: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods. While you are not researchers (yet!), and therefore you may not have consciously considered this, we all have a philosophical perspective that guides our thoughts, beliefs, and values as we walk through this life. This means that how we view ‘reality’ or the world ‘out there’ will strongly influence the methods we choose to investigate it.

Reflecting on how you view the world will provide perspective on why you view the world as you do and yourself in it. Such introspection provides a model for social inquiry and, by extension, advanced nursing inquiry. Considering that it is not unusual for a researcher (or a non-researcher for that matter) to occupy a range of positions along the spectrum from Positivist to Pragmatist to Constructivist, where would you place yourself on that continuum? How do you know? What real-world examples lead you to this conclusion? As a result of critically reflecting on your beliefs and values, which is intended to lead us to a better understanding of self, which research methodology would you be drawn to as a nurse researcher and why? Why is this process of self-discovery an important leg of your journey of learning in this course?
As you are engaging in this process of reflection, please do not restate the questions in your response post but rather weave your answers into a scholarly narrative

Topic 1: Exploring Core Values

In this discussion, you will chat with your classmates about the assigned readings for this week.

Initial Post (due

Select the This I Believe essay that you found most interesting from the Assigned Readings for this week.

Assigned Readings:

Capo, N. (2011). Teacher.This I Believe. https://thisibelieve.org/essay/68896/

Coyne, W. (2007). Creating our own happiness.This I Believehttps://thisibelieve.org/essay/24791/

Porter, C. (2015). Moving beyond stereotypes. This I Believe. https://thisibelieve.org/essay/1717/

Then, write a post where you do the following:

(1) indicate the core value(s) that the author presents in the essay

(2) discuss why you find your chosen essay interesting

(3) explain a personal connection you have with the author’s core value(s) and experiences

(4) demonstrate basic sentence structure

Sample Initial Post

In her essay, “We Are All Stardust,” Kimberly Woodberry shares her core values of spirituality and interconnection. I found Woodberry’s essay interesting in that she expresses both our reliance on the divine and on each other as human beings. This idea really resonates with me because I also believe that we are all bound together by our common human experience and that a higher being orchestrates it all. The personal connection that I can make with Woodberry is that her core values of spirituality and interconnection were largely shaped by her father. As the daughter of a minister, it is my father who really helped me to understand the divine and how our lives are connected with the lives of others.

Peer Response (due

Respond to at least one of your classmates and comment on any aspect of their post. In writing your response, you should consider the following questions:

(1) What was your reaction to her/his selected essay?

(2) What about the selected essay stood out to you?

(3) Can you relate to your classmate’s personal connection with the author?

Sample Peer Response

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Woodberry’s essay and your personal experiences. I had a very different reaction to “We Are All Stardust.” While I understand Woodberry’s perspective, I have never really embraced the idea of a higher being. I certainly believe that we are largely impacted by our connections to others, but for me the “divine” is not part of that. I do find it interesting that Woodberry’s values and your values were really impacted by your experiences with your fathers. I have never really thought about the impact of my father’s values on my values, but as I think more about what he believes, it is clear to me that I share many of his values. I guess our upbringing impacts us in ways we don’t always realize.

The variable an experiment measures is called the dependent variable. The variable is dependent on the independent variable which is being controlled by the researcher. Experiments try to identify the effects the independent variable causes on the dependent variable (Flannelly et al., 2014). On the other hand, extraneous variables refer to all variables in an experiment that could have effects on the experiment but are not independent variables. In an experiment, only the independent variable should have effects on the dependent variable. Therefore, researchers try to control the extraneous variables.

Two ways that researcher control extraneous variables are through random sampling and Experimental designs. In random sampling, they do not take away the variables but make sure they are equal in all groups. In experimental design, researchers reduce or completely remove the extraneous variables (Kaya, 2015).

Variables in research are defined as an attribute of an object that is being studied. There are six types of variables in research which are dependent, independent, moderator, intervening, extraneous and controlled variables. The purpose of this paper is to explore independent, dependent, and extraneous variables and to explain how to control the extraneous variable.

Independent Variables are the variable that a researchercontrols or changes during a study. It has a direct effect on the dependent variable. An example of an independent variable is gender or level of education. On the other hand, the dependent variable is the variable that the researcher is measuring or testing during a study. The dependent variable depends on the independent variable. An example of a dependent variable is nutrition status, which depends on the independent variable level of education (Kaur, 2013). There is also the extraneousvariables, which are variables that the researcher is not intentionally studying in the experiment, but they negativelyinfluence the results of the study. There are various types of extraneous variables. The first type is participant variables, where the participants have prior knowledge or health status that could influence the study’s outcome. The second type is the situational variable, which includes lighting, temperature, or other environmental factors that may influence the study’s outcome. Thirdly is investigator effects, where the researcher unintentionally affects the study results by giving clues to the study participants on how they should act during the study.

Extraneous variables can be controlled by random sampling. Although random sampling does not eliminate extraneous variables, it ensures that they are equally distributed in both study groups. Secondly, situational variables, which areamong extraneous variables, become controlled by ensuring that the researcher controls the environment where the study takes place by keeping the noise and temperature levels and other environmental conditions constant.

Strategic Analysis 4-6 Page Paper

Strategic Analysis

This week’s paper is required to be approximately 4 -6 pages in length, not including the title page and the reference page. No paper should be fewer than 1400 words. Double space your work, cite your work, limit quotes, and edit your work well for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. If you have quotes included in your paper, you should have more than 1400 words to compensate. Your work will be automatically reviewed by Turnitin upon submission. Please make sure you have cited your work properly. Utilize the APA resource material provided in the content section of the classroom under course materials.

After our readings over the past five weeks, you should have an understanding of the types of strategy, organizational culture, the pros and cons of different organizational structures, the elements of internal and external environments, and the types of risk a company may take. After reading the attached articles below, you then can incorporate how the strategy decisions affect the company.

Read the two articles attached about managerial economics.

Your essay will address these items:

A. Select a company from the 35 listed at the end of our text (Case Studies – pages 540-541). Do not use any company that you previously wrote about in previous classes. This must be original research. In addition to the information in your text, research this company using at least (2) outside scholarly articles. Do not use a website as a reference. Your reference source must have an author. Discuss six selected topics from our studies throughout weeks one through five. Discuss these six topics in relation to your company and discuss how the economic situation of today influences the strategic decisions your company is making. Each of the six topics discussed should be in bold print. For example, one topic you may choose may be how your company handles competition (Five Forces Framework). Another topic may be your company’s organizational structure and why they have the structure they have. You may choose to discuss your company’s strategic grouping or value chain. Choose your topics and explore them in detail throughout your paper.

Give examples using the terms and concepts in your textbook readings and your research articles.

B. What is the importance of each of the six topics within your company?

C. What is the usefulness of understanding this topic in today’s corporate structure?

D. Through what strategies does your selected company choose to excel over other strategically grouped companies. For example, what strategies does Apple choose that keeps it on top?

Paper Format (no abstract is necessary):

Title Page – Include a title page with your name, student number, title of your paper, course number & course name.

Introductory Paragraph – Include an introductory paragraph that states your company and your six topics and why you selected them.

Font and Spacing – Use Times New Roman 12 pitch font with double-spaced lines.

Length – Write a 4 to 6 page essay not including the title page and citation page. Make sure you have at least 1400 words, not including the title and reference page.

Reference Page – Include all sources including your textbook on a separate reference page. Use references with authors, not websites. All references must have citations within your paper.

Utilize the APA Style for documenting sources. You will need to include at least 2 sources in additional to your textbooks. Finally, remember Wikipedia is NOT a scholarly source.

The case studies in the back of the book are cited and referenced also. They have different authors than our text. An example of citing a case study within a text:

Sainidis, E. (2013). Case Study: Severstal and the global steel industry. In Johnson, G., Whittington, R., Scholes, K. Angwin, D., Regner, P. (2014). Exploring Strategy Text & Cases (10th ed) pp. 666-670. Harlow, U.K.: Pearson

Punctuation, essay format (thesis, supporting paragraphs with transition and topic sentences, and summary) grammar and documentation count toward your grade.

Jackson Ultima Case Study

Highly competitive and professional figure skaters are finding that some of the best figure skating blades are manufactured in the United States. Ultima Skates LTD (www.jacksonultima.com), a division of Jackson Ultima Skates Inc., has become one of the most popular names in the figure skating blade industry. The company was founded in 1994 by Dan Nicholson and his partner Larry James; it produced its first skate blade in 1998. To learn more about Jackson Ultima Skates and its products, visit its website at (www.jacksonultima.com) or its Facebook page at Jackson Ultimate Skates.

Dan Nicholson is the president of Ultima Skates. He is originally from Blackpool, England. Nicholson competed nationally and then skated professionally for a number of years. His ice skating experience convinced him that ice skating blades were not performing as well as he thought they could; Nicholson believed that skate blades could be made better and yield better performance.

“After I stopped skating professionally, I was a distributor for one of our competitors. I then went on to design skates,” says Nicholson. “It was when I started designing skates that I really decided I could make a better ice skate.”

Ultima Skates began blade production in July of 1998 and launched its first blade at the National Figure Skating Championships in January 1999. What makes the blades unique is the manufacturing process. “We use modern machines and laser cutting, whereas our competitors are still making skates the way they always have, with stamping and making them by hand,” says Nicholson. “At Ultima Skates, we are really trying to take full advantage of all of the new technologies. We use a much harder steel, and we computer-profile all of our blades. By using computers to profile our blades, we are able to make blades that are exactly the same, last longer, and hold their edges better. Others still profile by hand, which is not very accurate,” he says.

Nicholson points out that these blades are not for everyone. When skaters get into championship level competition, most wear custom boots and pick specific blades to fit their needs on the ice. “We make blades for a very specific market of high-level competitors and professionals, who need more from a skate than you can buy from a store,” says Nicholson. Top skaters, including Tara Lipinski and three-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Elvis Stojko, skate on Ultima Blades.

The prices for the blades vary but are often upwards of $100, sometimes approaching $500 for customized blades with graphics. “Skate blades are kind of like cars, in that depending on what you want, you may pay a lot or a little. We are making the Mercedes Benz of skate blades,” Nicholson explains.

Ultima Skates is also the only skate manufacturing company that holds a patent on black skate blades. “We are the only company that can make black skate blades, which is a really sharp-looking blade,” he says.

Ultima Skates is the only skate blade manufacturer located in the United States; the only other two manufacturers are located in England. Ultima Skates is in DeKalb, Illinois, sixty miles west of Chicago. “While DeKalb may not seem like a hotbed of skating activity,” Nicholson says, “the location has worked out very well. The Chicagoland area is seeing a huge growth in the terms of skating rinks and skaters. There is at least $100 million worth of new ice and facilities within one hour of DeKalb.”

The next time you watch figure skating on TV, check to see if the skaters may be skating on Ultima skate blades manufactured in the United States—you’ll know they are if the skates are black.

1. What are the organizational attributes of Ultima Skates? Explain the organizational attributes that could be improved.

2. How has technology aided the development of Ultima Skates? What is the role of innovation in Ultima Skates future? How would you classify the Jackson Ultima Skates company?

3. Review the Jackson Ultima Skates website. Does it do an effective job of marketing and promoting the company and its products? How might you improve the website?

4. What are some tactics and techniques that you could used to market and sell Ultima Skates?

Using Health Information Technology as a Source of Evidence-Based Practice

Post a 1 page in APA style( No more than 250 word)description of your practice concern. Outline how you used health information technology to locate evidence-based practices that address this concern. Cite and include insights from the resources. Analyze how health information technology supports evidence-based practice. CITE SOURCES AND USE AT LEAST 3 REFERENCES.

FYI:  Read the following scenario from the text (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018 p. 506):Consider how the resources identified in the scenario above could influence an organization’s practice. •Twelve-hour shifts are problematic for patient and nurse safety, and yet hospitals continue to keep the 12-hour shift schedule. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine (Board on Health Care Services & Institute of Medicine, 2004) published a report that referred to studies as early as 1988 that discussed the negative effects of rotating shifts on intervention accuracy. Workers with 12-hour shifts realized more fatigue than workers on 8-hour shifts. In another study done in Turkey by Ilhan, Durukan, Aras, Turkcuoglu, and Aygun (2006), factors relating to increased risk for injury were age of 24 or less, less than 4 years of nursing experience, working in the surgical intensive care units, and working for more than 8 hours.  • •Select an issue in your practice that is of concern to you. Using health information technology, locate at least three evidence-based practice resources that address your concern and that could possibly inform further action.
