Review the presentations on the elements of fiction and writing about plot given in class.  

Read the story: A Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe (included in this assignment) or you can access it here: http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/telltale.html

1. What type of conflict do you think exists in this story (Look in Unit 3 of the online course under Writing about Plot). Explain why you think it is this type of conflict. Give examples from the story to support your opinion. (5 points)
2. Look at the Freytag Pyramid in the presentation of elements of fiction. Create a pyramid with examples from the story (What is the conflict that sets the plot in motion, the series of events representing rising action, etc.) (5 points)
3. Look at the presentation on an example of the analysis of the Story of an Hour plot: Writing about Plot in the online course content.  Create an outline like the example for Story of An Hour  for the plot of The Tell-Tale Heart. (10 points)

Example outline: Story of an Hour

1. Introduction
   1. Title, author, brief summary
   2. Mrs. Mallard
   3. Mixed feelings about her husband’s death.
   4. Internal conflict
   5. Thesis statement: The emotional conflict between sadness and joy, and which occurs in the period of one hour, is the basis of this story.
2. Mrs. Mallard’s emotional conflict begins with the news of her husband’s death. (This is the topic sentence.)
   1. Heart condition and news of husband’s death
   2. She feels sad, then feels happy
      1. Freedom
      2. Able to live her own life
3. As Mrs. Mallard sat in her room, celebrating her freedom, and imagining her future as a free woman, reality began to invade. 
   1. Mrs. Mallards accepts her feelings of joy
   2. Her sister keeps asking her to come out of the room.
      1. This might mean to come out and face reality.
      2. Her new reality as a free woman.
   3. She comes out of the room to face her new life
4. The conflict seems to be resolved as Mrs. Mallard comes down the stairs, now wishing for a long life, when only an hour ago, she was dreading a long life.
   1. She finds out her husband is alive.
   2. Everyone is surprised, but mostly Mrs. Mallard.
   3. The surprise is too much for her weak heart, and she dies.
   4. The conflict of her desire to be free versus her obligations as a wife are resolved, because death sets her free.
5. “The Story of an Hour” presents a woman’s emotional conflict related to her feelings of duty to her husband, and her desire to be free of these duties.
   1. When she finds out her husband is dead, she feels sad at first.
   2. She begins to reflect on what her life will be like without him.
      1. She won’t have to serve him.
      2. She will be free.
   3. After finding feelings of freedom and joy, she is confronted with the reality that her husband is not dead.
   4. She still finds freedom from her husband, because she dies.

Assignment 5

After studying the sections on Writing about Plot in units 3 and 5 of the online course material, read Woody Allen’s one-act play: Death Knocks.

1. Using the online material as a guide, write a possible thesis statement for an essay analyzing the plot of this play. (5 points)
2. Create a detailed outline for a 5-paragraph essay analyzing the plot of this play based on your thesis statement. (15 points)

Overview

In your exploration of readings this module, you will find articles of interest around the following areas: digestive system diseases and neurologic diseases. The key terms in the Explore section might give you some ideas for diseases to search. As you read the articles, be sure to consider how many of them have multiple issues going on within different systems. Is there a connection between the systems discussed?

Instructions

1. From the list of selected readings below, choose two with topics that you know the least about or are most interesting to you.
2. Then search for, read, and incorporate other readings of your choice in your area of interest that focus on digestive system diseases and/or neurologic diseases. You might include:
   • 1-2 journal articles or websites
   • Book chapters (past textbooks may be good options)
   • Your goal is to have a total of at least 60 pages of content read. 
3. Your summary of each reading should be at least one paragraph (100-200 words) and include the following information:
   • All references must be cited using APA Style format. Please refer to the CCCOnline APA Citation Toolkit.
   • Number of pages read
   • Keywords you used to find the reading
   • A link to the reading
   • Why you selected the reading
   • The main point of the reading
   • Describe how the health deviations you read about alter normal physiology.
   • Provide your key takeaway from the reading. This could be something that made you pause, changed your thinking, supported your thinking, or made you question something.
4. In your post, identify how many systems are discussed or impacted by the disease you read about in the reading. Is there a connection between systems? Be specific.

Case Study 2: Design Process
Due Week 4 and worth 90 points

You have recently started your own software design company. You discover that your local DMV is looking to build a system that will allow receptionists to check customers in quickly. They would like for the system to allow customers to self-check-in during busy times, but have receptionists check customers in the rest of the time. Your company puts a bid in for the project and wins. Read the article located at http://www.bcs.org/upload/pdf/ewic_hc07_lppaper18.pdf. Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

1. Suggest the prototyping technique you would use for this system and support your rationale.
2. Create a management plan containing eight to ten (8-10) stages for proper design of such a system. 
3. Explain each stage of the management plan and justify your rationale.
4. Estimate the length of time it will take to complete each stage of the management plan.
5. Compare and contrast the self-check-in interface with the interface a receptionist would use.
6. Use Microsoft Visio or an open source alternative, Dia, to create a total of two (2) graphical representations of your proposed interfaces, one (1) for the self-check-in and one (1) for the receptionist. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length.
7. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources. 

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

Here’s an example of what your primary post should look like:

As a Veteran, I try to stay informed and serve my community.  I have served on local boards, volunteered my time with various charities, and participated as a county and state delegate at political conventions.  As a result, I get a lot of “robo-calls” and my name ends up on a lot of candidate mailing lists.  I once received a mailer from a candidate running for county commissioner where I live.  I had no issues with the candidate, his background, or his talking points, but there were glaring grammar mistakes in his campaign literature, which made it very difficult to take him seriously.  I felt like someone who went through the effort to pay for and mail out a piece of literature with all those mistakes must lack the attention to detail needed to effectively serve as a county commissioner.  It is possible that it was just a mistake and that someone on his campaign staff had simply failed to proofread, but why would he hire someone who was such a poor writer to handle his campaign’s communication?  As much as I wanted to be objective, the damage was done.  I just couldn’t get past the grammar mistakes considering the qualifications he had and the office for which he was running.

As the firm looks for ways to offset the domestic downturn in sales, Deborah, the CEO of your company, wants to determine if a global strategy is a good fit for the organization.  She has designated you as the manager for this project.  You will work with your team to develop a global marketing plan for your organization.

You begin your research in deciding if and what the global strategy should be. You get your team together and begin to discuss a plan on how you will research this possibility.

You start the meeting by saying “Let’s brainstorm and start to get a plan together for a possible globalization strategy. Tiffany, I’d like you work with me to begin researching possible locations.”

Tiffany says, “I think we need to research some locations, but I think there is more to it than that. There still needs to be a decision on the type of strategy or approach we are taking. Would we use a multidomestic approach, a global approach, or a transnational approach? I’m still not entirely convinced a global strategy is the answer.”

“Great point, Tiffany. It is obvious to me as well that we need to explore a strategy that will put us in a better position to handle the economic downturn. We have to provide the board with the facts. They seem to be leaning in the direction of a global strategy, but I’m not sure it’s the right move either. That’s why we need to do research.”

Domestic profit margins have dropped by 2% this quarter. You wonder how you and your team can help fix this. Is a global strategy the answer, or should the company continue to focus on the domestic market?

You call a team meeting to learn about the progress of their research. 

Tiffany, one of your team members, begins the discussion. “I think we need to look at some of the internal factors,” she says. “We know what our capabilities are on the domestic front, but what about in the global market? We have a fairly strong market presence here in higher-end markets, but how does that translate globally?”

Discuss the following:

• How do you define a global strategy? Compare and contrast global strategy with other international expansion strategies.
• Identify a minimum of 3 possible countries for globalization. Research each of these locations in the furniture industry, and document both the pros and cons of using these in global strategy.
• What country would you choose? What evidence can you provide in support of your choice?
• What evidence might somebody else, who does not agree with you, provide to support an alternative choice?
