For those of you in the HIM program when you join AHIMA, you are automatically a member of your state association as well (NJHIMA for most).  There are also local/regional associations focused on different parts of each state. 

For students in the Health Science program investigate local associations which apply to your healthcare discipline.

Week 5 Discussions: Parenting older children

Consider the following scenario: 

You are a working single parent of a 16-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. Your son has an 11 PM curfew on weekends, but recently, he has been ignoring curfew and coming home after midnight. When you try to address this with him, he either ignores you or gets angry and starts screaming at you. When he’s at home, he tends to shut himself away in his room. His latest report card shows that his grades are slipping. You are getting very concerned, but you work full-time and parent by yourself, so you are getting frustrated as well. 

At the same time, your daughter has been telling you that she doesn’t feel well and doesn’t want to go to school. After some prodding, she shared that she has been getting teased at school and bullied online. 

After reviewing the learning resources for this week, come up with a strategy for dealing with your children that is supported by the literature on adolescent discipline. What are some of the things that you need to take into consideration? What actions would you implement to try and address the problematic behaviors you are witnessing? What actions would you avoid?

For this discussion, an excellent response will be well written and at least 2-3 paragraphs in length, incorporating at least 3 of the learning resources provided. You may also include other resources that you find outside of the classroom. Remember to use in-text citations and a reference list to identify the ideas that you learned from your sources. Any idea that came from something you read must be cited. When in doubt, cite it!

This is the first Assignment of many in the coming weeks that will help you complete your Immersion Project. For this Assignment, you will identify a culture to focus on for your project. Keep in mind that the term “culture” is not limited to a particular race or ethnicity but is much broader and includes gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, physical ability, religion, political affiliations, immigration status, military membership, etc. It would be wise to select a culture that you know little about, one that you anticipate encountering often in your work as an advanced human services professional practitioner, and one that you are able to access through planned activities in your community (e.g., religious service, festival, exhibit, etc.).

To Prepare

• Select a culture to focus on for your Immersion Project that is different from the culture(s) with which you identify. You may select a culture that is discussed in this week’s Learning Resources or one that is not.
• Find an activity of the culture that you could observe before Day 7 of Week 4.
• Consider how the culture you select is different from the culture(s) with which you identify.
• Reflect on your current perceptions of the culture you selected. 

Submit a 1- to 2-page paper that addresses the following:

• Identify the culture you will focus on for your Immersion Project and the activity of the culture you plan on observing (e.g., attend a religious service; take a tour of the group’s community; or attend a gathering, festival, culture-themed play, tour, or exhibit). Explain how this culture is different from the culture(s) with which you identify. Differences should include both the obvious (visible differences, etc.) and the not so obvious (religious beliefs, sexual orientation, etc.).
• Explain your current perceptions of this culture. Your perceptions should include what you were told about this culture as you were growing up (if anything), what your sources of information about this culture have been in the past, and why you have an interest in this culture.

Identify which quality measures and strategies will be used to indicate whether the solution is effective. Specify your data collection method and how data will be analyzed. • How do you intend to collect and analyze information to ascertain stakeholder satisfaction with the initiative? What information will be looked at, and who are the stakeholders that will be considered?

Reaction Paper FormatIntroductionThe purpose of responding to a reaction statement is to enhance critical thinking skills. Your objective in writing a response to the designated statement is to “…define an issue clearly and to formulate and clarify your position on that issue by reacting to a controversial statement” ( Johnson, Rettig, Scott, and Garrison, 2002, p. 127). In this exercise, there are four essential elements to be completed:

1. Define the issue announced in the statement;
2. Clearly state your position with regard to the statement;
3. Defend your position; and
4. Conclude your reaction.

1. Defining the Issue – As you examine the statement, what is the most critical element presented? In this case, is it equality of sentencing? Is it the gender of those being sentenced? Does it imply that women and men commit different types of crimes? Is it the scarcity of prison space that is the controlling condition? As you define the issue(s) in the statement, provide some clarity for yourself that allows you to establish a clear position.
2. Clearly State your Position on the Issue – There should be no doubt where you stand on the issue. Perhaps you believe that “Scarce prison space is too valuable to expend on women prisoners convicted of only property crimes.” Or, you might believe “It is equal justice under the law that makes the U.S. criminal justice system work. Women offenders deserve equality of sentencing under all circumstances!” Your position should be capable of being stated in a short paragraph that includes a clear statement of your position such as those found above.
3. Defend your Position – Here is where the “rubber hits the road.” The traction and credibility of your position rest in large measure on how well you support your stance. To best support your position:

• Identify the most important arguments needed to support your position and state them clearly (if you are using another source, make sure you are citing it properly in your response so that it may be verified);
• Facts, facts, facts win the day, so use plenty of facts and information to support your stand; and
• Be logical, accurate, and clear in the presentation of your facts.
