Global managerial economics IP1

Suppose that there are two products: clothing and soda. Both Brazil and the United States produce each product. Brazil can produce 100,000 units of clothing per year and 50,000 cans of soda. The United States can produce 65,000 units of clothing per year and 250,000 cans of soda. Assume that costs remain constant. For this example, assume that the production possibility frontier (PPF) is a straight line for each country because no other data points are available or provided. Include a PPF graph for each country in your paper. Chapter 5 of the Suranovic text is a good reference for this task.

Complete the following:

  • What would be the production possibility frontiers for Brazil and the United States?
  • Without trade, the United States produces AND CONSUMES 32,500 units of clothing and 125,000 cans of soda.
  • Without trade, Brazil produces AND CONSUMES 50,000 units of clothing and 25,000 cans of soda.
  • Denote these points on each COUNTRY’s production possibility frontier.
  • Using what you have learned and any independent research you may conduct, which product should each country specialize in, and why?

To assist in your thinking and discussion, additional questions to consider include:

  • What is the labor-intensive good?
  • What is the Marginal Rate of Transformation impact?
  • What is the labor-abundant country?
  • What is the capital-abundant country?
  • Could trade help reduce poverty in Brazil and other developing countries?

Cyber Harassment

In many ways, social media platforms have created great benefits for our societies by expanding and diversifying the ways people communicate with each other, and yet these platforms also have the power to cause harm. Posting hurtful messages about other people is a form of harassment known as cyberbullying. Some acts of cyberbullying may not only be considered slanderous, but also lead to serious consequences. In 2010, Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi jumped to his death a few days after his roommate used a webcam to observe and tweet about Tyler’s sexual encounter with another man. Jane Clementi, Tyler’s mother, stated, “In this digital world, we need to teach our youngsters that their actions have consequences, that their words have real power to hurt or to help. They must be encouraged to choose to build people up and not tear them down.”

In 2013, Idalia Hernández Ramos, a middle school teacher in Mexico, was a victim of cyber harassment. After discovering that one of her students tweeted that the teacher was a “bitch” and a “whore,” Hernández confronted the girl during a lesson on social media etiquette. Inquiring why the girl would post such hurtful messages that could harm the teacher’s reputation, the student meekly replied that she was upset at the time. The teacher responded that she was very upset by the student’s actions. Demanding a public apology in front of the class, Hernández stated that she would not allow “young brats” to call her those names. Hernández uploaded a video of this confrontation online, attracting much attention.

While Hernández was subject to cyber harassment, some felt she went too far by confronting the student in the classroom and posting the video for the public to see, raising concerns over the privacy and rights of the student. Sameer Hinduja, who writes for the Cyberbullying Research Center, notes, “We do need to remain gracious and understanding towards teens when they demonstrate immaturity.” Confronting instances of a teenager venting her anger may infringe upon her basic rights to freedom of speech and expression. Yet, as Hinduja explains, teacher and student were both perpetrators and victims of cyber harassment. All the concerns of both parties must be considered and, as Hinduja wrote, “The worth of one’s dignity should not be on a sliding scale depending on how old you are.”

Evaluation of Argument Essay

Evaluation of Argument Essay

Prompt: Which of the two writers we studied for this unit do you believe makes the most effective argument, Schumaker or Twenge?

Write a paper developing your position on the strongest argument of the two. You should start with some pre-writing on the issue to discover your position and the criteria (standards) you will use. Then once you have a thesis decide on what reasons you will give for its support. These reasons will be your topics sentences in body paragraphs. The introduction should help your paper read as a stand-along essay rather than as a mere response to a question asked by a professor. Then flesh out examples and evidence for each body paragraph and write the first draft. Put it aside and return to it a couple of days later to see whether there is a clear thesis, whether each paragraph has a topic sentence (reason) that supports the thesis, and whether evidence in each paragraph relates to the topic sentence. Check transitions, word choice, and edit and proofread. Follow the guidelines for format in the syllabus. Upload the paper for peer and self-assessment by the set deadline. You will then go through the assessment activity, and finally upload the revised paper by the stated deadline.

Structure: You can choose any of the two articles you want, but make sure you are clear in your choice and the reasons for choosing it. Also, be fair—since the essay you did not choose has some great strength also, acknowledge it. Or, you can instead choose to acknowledge some weakness your own choice has (or do both in the concession paragraph). Of course, being fair does not mean being ambivalent. You will still make it clear you find your choice the strongest.

Sources: The two articles will be the sources you will use for this paper, with no other sources needed or expected. You will create a works cited page entry for it with the two articles. For whatever you use in your essay from the articles, put it in quotation marks and indicate the page number in parenthesis, or if you paraphrase it or use an idea from it put just the page number in the parenthesis.

Audience: Your audience will be readers who are considering which of the two articles to include in a college textbook and who are leaning toward the opposite selection of the one you made.

Length: Papers should be at least 900 words (minimum)

Grading: I will grade you on the following criteria:

 Element

Points

A clear structure with a thesis in the introduction, topic sentences for each body paragraph, and conclusion; the title, introduction, and conclusion are engaging.

15

The paper clearly reaches out to its audience. This is evident throughout in tone, and especially in the concession paragraph.

15

Body paragraphs have sufficient evidence for each topic sentence and are focused. Paragraphs have adequate downshifting. The paper clearly reaches out to its audience.

20

There is appropriate use of sources (not extensive—simply strategic)

20

The paper is written in eloquent prose, and there are no frequent errors in grammar, sentence structure and other mechanics. There are effective transitions between paragraphs and diction and sentence structure are appropriate for the college level. There is appropriate sentence variety.

15

The writer has followed the guidelines for a paper’s form in the syllabus

Week 3 project 5/21

Reaching out a Solution

In a Microsoft Word document of 4-5 pages formatted in APA style, you will develop a process for advocating about an issue as a nurse, from identifying a problem that needs to be solved through articulating a process for doing so.

This assignment consists of answering each of the questions listed below from the “Political Analysis and Strategies” chapter of your course textbook. Write each question as a new topic area; then follow with a paragraph or two to answer the question.

Let us assume that you are a school nurse in a high school. At a recent school athletic event, a spectator suffered a cardiac arrest in the stands. A coach of the home team went into the high school to fetch the automatic emergency defibrillator (AED) only to find out that it was not readily available. In the meantime, an emergency squad arrived and resuscitated the spectator. On Monday morning, you learn of the absence of the AED only to find out that it had been locked in the custodian’s closet. Reflect on the following questions outlined in the “Political Analysis and Strategies” chapter

  • What is the issue?
  • Is it my issue, and can I solve it?
  • Is this the real issue or merely a symptom of a larger one?
  • Does it need an immediate solution, or can it wait?
  • Is it likely to go away by itself?
  • Can I risk ignoring it?
  • What are the possible solutions? Are there risks to these solutions?
  • What steps would you need to take in order to solve the issue?
  • Does anyone else at the school need to be involved in the solution?
  • Where is the power leverage in the school to reach the preferred solution?
    • Reaching a solution requires the use of power vested in the nurse. Review Box 9-1 (Sources of Power) and determine which type(s) of power the school nurse has in this situation. State your reasons for your answer.

On a separate references page, cite all sources using APA format. Helpful APA guides and resources are available. c program, bitpacker and its reverse app

Suppose a text file contains ASCII characters ‘0’ and ‘1’ representing bits in human readable form. For example, test.txt may contain 111111110000000 which means its size is 16 bytes. A simple method for compressing the file by a factor of 8 is to represent a block of 8 ‘0’ or ‘1’ ASCII characters as a single byte. Thus test.txt which is 16 bytes long can be compressed into a file that is 2 bytes long where the first byte contains all 1’s and the second byte all 0’s. The resultant compressed file is a binary file since the first byte is not an ASCII character.

Code an app, bitpacker, that reads from stdin the input filename which follows the same specification as Problem 3. However, instead of using getchar(), use the library function fgets() whose the second argument allows specifying how many bytes, at most, should be read which helps prevent array overrun. Process the data in the input file 8 characters at a time by reading them into a 1-D array, char rawdat[8]. Compact the eight ‘0’ and ‘1’ characters in rawdat[] into a single byte using the bit processing techniques discussed in class. Write the resultant byte into an output file with suffix “.P”. For the above example, test.txt.P. We will allow the size of the input file not to be a multiple of 8. Since we are compacting 8 ASCII characters ‘0’ and ‘1’ into a single byte, we will use padding to handle files whose size is not a multiple of 8. For example, if text file test1.dat contains characters 1111111100000000111 (file size is 19 bytes), we will pad the last three characters 111 with 00000 so that the byte containing bit values 11100000 is written to test1.dat.P. To note that we padded the original data with five 0 bit values, we will change the suffix of the output file to test1.dat.P5. For test.txt where no padding was needed, the output filename will be test.txt.P0. Thus the last character of the filename specifies how much padding (0-7) was added.

Code bitpacker as a single main() function in main.c . Test and verify that it works correctlyCode an app, bitunpacker, that performs the reverse operation of bitpacker. bitunpacker reads the input filename from stdin using fgets() and checks that the suffix ends with .P[0-7] where [0-7] means that the last character must one of the digits 0, 1, …, 7. Strip the suffix in the name of the output file. Implement the app as a single main() function in main.c . Test and verify that it works correctly.
