Assignment: Comparing Software Development Workloads

Estimating the cost of developing software in terms of work load is difficult since it is a challenge to quantify the size and complexity of a software system. The article Analysis of Size Metrics and Effort Performance Criterion in Software Cost Estimation provides an overview of different metrics used to assess size and complexity (Malathi & Sridhar, 2012). The metrics include counts of lines of code, function point counts, and operation counts. Function point counts are often utilized because they can be estimated based on project design specifications. The dataset pointworkload.cvs contains data collected from 104 programming projects at AT&T between 1986 and 1991 (Matson & Huguenard, 2005). This dataset include number of work hours for each project, the function point count for each project, and identifiers for operating system, data management system, and programming language utilized. In this application, you will investigate whether operating system, data management system and programming language impact the number of work hours per function point for a project.Open the dataset pointworkload.csv in Excel. Create a new column that calculates the number of work hours per function point for each project. Save the file with this new data column.

pointworkload.csv

Next, you would want to look at the distribution of work hours per function point in a frequency diagram. Doing so in Excel requires either binning and counting the data yourself or installing the Data Analysis Toolpak Add-On. However, even with the add-on, simply getting a histogram requires multiple steps. Excel is designed for data presentation not for significant statistical analysis. It is capable of the statistical analysis but only with add-ons, macros, or programming. Instead of taking these steps, you will switch now to a software tool designed for statistical analysis, SPSS.Go to the Resources section for Unit 4, and download the document IBM_SPSS_Installation_and_Registration_Instructions. This will guide you through the process of installing the statistical analysis platform SPSS which you will utilize for the remainder of this assignment.

  1. Import the file you revised in Excel to include work hours per function point into SPSS (be sure to tell it that yes there are variable names included at the top of your file) and take a screenshot showing your successful installation and import. This screen shot should be pasted into your overall document.
  2. In the top tool-bar, select Analyze, Descriptive Statistics, Frequencies. Put the work hours per function point variable you created in the Variable(s) column. Click Charts and select Histogram. Then, click Continue and OK. SPSS will now run the requested analysis. In the Output, scroll down to the histogram and copy-paste it into your overall document. Describe the distribution of the data. Does it appear to be normally distributed? What are the average and standard deviation? Are there any outliers?  Now, you are ready to determine whether operating system, data management system, or language impact the work hours per function point. To do this, you will utilize two different statistical tools. The t-test for difference in means between two independent samples and the analysis of variance.
  3. There are two different operating systems utilized. A 0 indicates UNIX, and a 1 indicates MVS. The t-test will allow you to assess the null hypothesis that the two operating systems give the same average work load per function point. Select Analyze, Compare Means, Independent-Samples T-Test. Your test variable is work hours per function point. Your grouping variable is OS. You will need to click Define Groups and make Group 1 = 0 (UNIX) and Group 2 = 1 (MVS). With these defined, click Continue and OK to get both the group statistics and the t-test results. Use the group statistics to calculate the t-value. Show all of your work for the calculation. For α=0.05, what is the p-value for the hypothesis? Based on this result, draw a conclusion as to whether or not the different operating systems result in a significant difference in work load per function point.
  4. By examining the t-test results from the previous question, you can see that both the t-statistic and the p-value are calculated there. You will be running several tests to determine if programming language impacts work load per function point, and you should draw your data from these charts rather than calculating by hand. Go back to your Independent-Samples T-Test and change the Grouping Variable to Language. Define the groups as 1 (Cobol) and 2 (PLI). Copy the t-test results to your overall document. Repeat this process for groups 1 (Cobol) and 3 (C), groups 1 (Cobol) and 4 (Other), groups 2 (PLI) and 3 (C), groups 2 (PLI) and 4 (Other), and groups 3 (C) and 4 (Other). Copy all six t-test results to your overall document. Based on these result, draw a conclusion as to whether or not the different programming languages result in a significant difference in work load per function point. Be sure to state the different null hypotheses considered and which are rejected and accepted at α=0.05.
  5. Running six different t-tests certainly answers the question of whether or not programming language effects work load per function point, but it is relatively time consuming to run and assess each of these results separately. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) allows this multiple group comparison. Go to Analyze, Compare Means, One-Way ANOVA. Select work hours per function point as your dependent variable and Language as factor then click OK. Copy the ANOVA table to your overall document. Explain what the ANOVA table tells you and what conclusions can be drawn.
  6. ANOVA has the down side that it only tells if some group is significantly different from some other group but does not identify those groups. You can obtain that information by adding a post hoc test to compare means. Go back to the One-Way ANOVA and click on Post Hoc. You will see numerous options. These are all different methods for comparing the groups. Each approaches the comparison differently. You will utilize the Tukey comparison here. Select Tukey then click Continue and OK. You will see both a comparison table and a table creating homogenous subsets. From this data you should be able to conclude that there is a significant difference between 1 (Cobol) and 2 (PLI). Copy these charts to your overall document and explain how that conclusion may be drawn. How does this compare to your t-test conclusions?
  7. Utilize t-test and/or ANOVA to determine the impact of database management system on work load per function point. The values are 1 (IDMS), 2 (IMS), 3 (INFORMIX), 4 (INGRESS), and 5 (Other). You should present your data, draw conclusions, and explain those conclusions.

Assignment: Neural Communication

Any and all behaviors originate in the nervous system. If you are reacting to a mosquito biting your arm, sensory receptors in your skin detect the insect in a specific place on your arm. They send that information to the brain using a combination of electrical and chemical signals. Your brain receives that information and reacts to it, generating a motor response. This plan is transmitted back to the muscles of the arm, again using a combination of electrical and chemical signals. Likewise, any other behavior—from a memory of your childhood to the emotional reaction to a movie to the decisions about what to have for dinner tonight—is controlled by electrical and chemical messages exchanged by neurons in your nervous system.

Damage to the nervous system will affect its behavior. If a person has a stroke in the motor cortex, there will be impairments in his or her ability to move part of their body. In some cases of a traumatic brain injury, a person’s brain collides with the inside of the skull. This may tear neurons and cause swelling, which will change how the brain functions in both the short term and the long term. An injury to the spinal cord can result in paralysis. While the brain is exceptionally complicated, researchers are starting to identify ways to minimize or reverse such damage to the nervous system, such as the use of brain-machine interfaces.

In this Assignment, you will consider both the normal electrical and chemical signaling that occurs in the brain and damage that can affect the nervous system. In the first half of your Assignment, you will describe in detail how the neurons of the brain use electrical and chemical signals to collect and transmit information. Then, in the second half, you will be assigned a topic based on the first letter of your last name. You will find a recent research article (published within the past 3 years) that addresses the neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, recovery of function following injury, or a new treatment for your assigned topic. You will summarize your article describing what the researchers did and relating their work back to what you have learned about the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system from the course textbook.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Chapter 2 of the textbook, focusing on how information is transmitted through the nervous system.
  • Review Chapter 3 of the textbook focusing on where different functions are localized in the brain.
  • Choose one of the articles out of the two listed below for each category (the category assignment is based on your last name; you only need to read and report on ONE article in total) and then download the full PDF from the Walden Library (the articles have been pre-selected for you and cover topics such as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, recovery of function, or novel treatments associated with one of the following conditions). You may choose your own article; however, it must be approved by your instructor by Thursday before the assignment is due.

Last name A–G: Stroke

  • “Daily repetitive sensory stimulation of the paretic hand for the treatment of sensorimotor deficits in patients with subacute stroke: RESET, a randomized sham-controlled trial”

OR

  • “The effects of Nintendo Wii™-based balance and upper extremity training on activities of daily living and quality of life in patients with sub-acute stroke: a randomized controlled study”

Last name H–M: Traumatic brain injury

  • “The efficacy of prospective memory rehabilitation plus metacognitive skills training for adults with traumatic brain injury: study protocol for randomized controlled trial”

OR

  • “Tonic and phasic alertness training: a novel treatment for executive control dysfunction following mild traumatic brain injury”

Last name N–S: Brain machine interface to address trauma or loss of function

  • “Engineering Artificial Somatosensation Through Cortical Stimulation in Humans”

OR

  • “A new therapeutic application of brain-machine interface (BMI) training followed by hybrid assistive neuromuscular dynamic stimulation (HANDS) therapy for patients with severe hemiparetic stroke: A proof of concept study”

Last name T–Z: Spinal cord trauma

  • “Bone architecture adaptations after spinal cord injury: impact of long-term vibration of a constrained lower limb”

OR

  • “A new therapeutic application of brain-machine interface (BMI) training followed by hybrid assistive neuromuscular dynamic stimulation (HANDS) therapy for patients with severe hemiparetic stroke: A proof of concept study”

The Assignment (3–4 pages):

  • First, describe how information is transmitted through the nervous system. Starting with the dendrites, how does the signal from the previous neuron enter the neuron? How is it integrated? How is information transmitted from the cell body to the presynaptic terminal? How does information leave one neuron to carry the signal to the next neuron?
  • Then, identify and explain the neurobiology (anatomy and physiology) of your specific topic. What parts of the brain are affected by your assigned injury or trauma? What are the potential manifestations of the trauma based on the location of the injury or trauma? Information on each condition can be found both in your textbook and from outside sources.
  • Summarize the article you selected. Provide enough detail that your reader can understand the article and talk about it to someone else, similar to what you saw in the articles from BioPsychology.com in this week’s Discussion. What did the researchers do in their study? Were they attempting to understand the neurobiology of the condition, measuring the recovery of function after the injury, or testing out a new treatment?
  • Explain how the article you read extends your knowledge of this topic from what was described in the textbook.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You should include in-text citations in the body of your Assignment as well as complete references in APA format at the end of your Assignment.

Lyme Disease Case Study # 1

A 38-year-old male had a 3-week history of fatigue and lethargy with intermittent complaints of headache, fever, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. According to the history, the patient’s symptoms began shortly after a camping vacation. He recalled a bug bite and rash on his thigh immediately after the trip. The following studies were ordered: Studies Result

Lyme disease test: Elevated IgM antibody titers against Borrelia burgdorferi (normal: low)

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR):30 mm/hour (normal: ≤15 mm/hour)

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST): 32 units/L (normal: 8-20 units/L)

Hemoglobin (Hgb); 12 g/dL (normal: 14-18 g/dL)

Hematocrit (Hct); 36% (normal: 42%-52%)

Rheumatoid factor (RF): Negative (normal: negative)

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA): Negative (normal: negative)

Diagnostic Analysis:

Based on the patient’s history of camping in the woods and an insect bite and rash on the thigh, Lyme disease was suspected. Early in the course of this disease, testing for specific immunoglobulin (Ig) M antibodies against B. burgdorferi is the most helpful in diagnosing Lyme disease. An elevated ESR, increased AST levels, and mild anemia are frequently seen early in this disease. RF and ANA abnormalities are usually absent.

Critical Thinking; Questions

1. What is the cardinal sign of Lyme disease? (always on the boards)

2. At what stages of Lyme disease are the IgG and IgM antibodies elevated?

3. Why was the ESR elevated?

4. What is the Therapeutic goal for Lyme Disease and what is the recommended treatment.

Peripheral Vascular Disease Case Studies #2

A 52-year-old man complained of pain and cramping in his right calf caused by walking two blocks. The pain was relieved with cessation of activity. The pain had been increasing in frequency and intensity. Physical examination findings were essentially normal except for decreased hair on the right leg. The patient’s popliteal, dorsalis pedis, and posterior tibial pulses were markedly decreased compared with those of his left leg.

Studies Results

Routine laboratory work: Within normal limits (WNL)

Doppler ultrasound systolic pressures Femoral: 130 mm Hg; popliteal: 90 mm Hg; posterior tibial: 88 mm Hg; dorsalis pedis: 88 mm Hg (normal: same as brachial systolic blood pressure)

Arterial plethysmography: Decreased amplitude of distal femoral, popliteal, dorsalis pedis, and posterior tibial pulse waves

Femoral arteriography of right leg: Obstruction of the femoral artery at the midthigh level

Arterial duplex scan: Apparent arterial obstruction in the superficial femoral artery Diagnostic Analysis:

With the clinical picture of classic intermittent claudication, the noninvasive Doppler and plethysmographic arterial vascular study merely documented the presence and location of the arterial occlusion in the proximal femoral artery. Most vascular surgeons prefer arteriography to document the location of the vascular occlusion. The patient underwent a bypass from the proximal femoral artery to the popliteal artery. After surgery he was asymptomatic.

Critical Thinking Questions:

1. What was the cause of this patient’s pain and cramping?

2. Why was there decreased hair on the patient’s right leg?

3. What would be the strategic physical assessments after surgery to determine the adequacy of the patient’s circulation?

4. What would be the treatment of intermittent Claudication for non-occlusion?

5. On the social and moral obligations of Business (Modules 9 and 10

This is a graded discussion forum set up for discussing a variety of different issues concerning different views on the moral obligations of business. There are a variety of different views on this. To receive all of the 25 points for participation in this discussion forum we expect you to do the following:

1. Make sure that you post your first contribution in this forum well before July 5th (the closing date for this discussion forum).
2. Make a minimum of at least two significant original contributions with arguments and examples (generally at least a full page) plus you must also interact with other posters. Note that for a post to count as a significant contribution, it must elaborate on a new point related to the discussion at hand, or else present a new perspective or argument and be supported by logic and/or specific examples. A significant post can either be made as the start of a new thread or else in response to a thread started by someone else.
3. You should also engage in continuing additional interactions with other posters over time (in other words, you should not be posting all your contributions in this forum at the same time). Moreover, you should respond to any posts that are made by others that challenge original posts that you made. Note that this means that you must make your posts early enough that you can interact with others before this discussion board closes. Posts that are made right before the discussion closes will probably neither be read, nor responded to, by other posters and hence posts that are made at the last minute do not represent the same contribution to the discussion as earlier posts.
4. Remain civil and respectful of other posters in the forums. We welcome disagreements and contrary opinions that we can debate and respond to. After all, that is what makes for a good discussion, but we also want to make sure that, even as we disagree about the issues, we will still remain cordial in responding to each other.

response 1

When discussing the matter on the social and moral obligation of business we can see that,  social and moral obligations of a business are stands for those issues that affects negatively on healthy relationship between members of society. In the context of business, moral obligation suggested to follow the legal rules or laws that help in governing transaction between different individuals and organizations. However, a moral and social obligation depends on the different kind of business industries and it changes according to the industries. As an example, the general moral and social obligations suggested not to harm others. In, case of civil laws the prohibition of homicide, dangerous behavior and drunk driving stands for moral and social obligations. On the other side, the social obligation stands for four significant factors in the field of every kind of industries such as philanthropic efforts, organization diversity, volunteer efforts and environmental conservation.

In addition, cultural preferences and diversity stands for the overlapping of moral and social obligation that suggested an organization to avoid discriminatory practice and maintenance of equity in respect to opportunity providence. Besides, the observation of proper business ethics also falls under the social and moral obligations in respect to a business. The most significant social and moral obligation of the organizations lies on the corporate social responsibility  practice which signifies the environmental and social contribution of an organization through their different type of activity. The contribution to the communities towards their lifestyle development can also be recognized as social obligation. On the other hand, the maintenance of carbon footprint limit and enhancement of natural resources through corporate social responsibility practice can be recognized as moral obligations.

response 2

I was struck by the great contrast between Milton Friedman’s argument about the social responsibility of business, and the approach that our culture takes more or less for granted on that subject today.

Friedman argues that “only people have responsibilities,” and therefore we cannot even properly speak of a business having responsibilities. In Friedman’s view, it is only sensible to speak of the responsibilities of business executives, whose primary responsibility is to the shareholders of the company he manages. If he is construed as also having some sort of responsibility to society at large, he can only fulfill this at the expense of the shareholders’ best interests. Friedman also views such social-oriented activity as amounting to a tax on any shareholders who disagree, and functioning as an under-the-table strategy for enacting social agendas that have been unable to gain traction through normal democratic processes. The proper responsibility of a corporation, for Friedman, is to generate profit for individuals, who do have social responsibilities as well as the right to choose how best to fulfill them using their own resources

Contrast that with our modern business environment, in which it is not only commonplace but expected for businesses to take moral positions on all kinds of social issues that may or may not have a bearing on their business. Above and beyond merely seeing themselves as having social responsibilities, there are an increasing number of businesses that actually use a socially-minded outlook as the lynchpin of their marketing mix: “while brands dominate the marketplace, their power lies…in their intangible symbolic attributes. These intangible qualities are particularly salient in ethical brands such as Fairtrade where it is the moral rather than the utilitarian connotations of the label that have inspired growing numbers of consumers to change their everyday purchasing practices.” (1) More cynically, we see marketing agencies explicitly referring to “morality marketing”, which one agency defines as “marketing constructed around an ethical (moral) viewpoint or stance” which “will leave an impact on your audience through messaging that resonates with their core beliefs.” (2)

Friedman speaks of this kind of business activism as a subversion of democracy, and I am inclined agree with him. Not all consumers share the same opinions about social controversies, and it frustrates many people to see simple purchase decisions (a soft drink, maybe) becoming freighted with messages they may not want to support. This is especially true when the brand is perceived to be acting not out of conviction, but in pursuit of profit. For example, many consumers perceive Nike’s social justice advertising as hypocritical given its labor practices at overseas factories. (3)

Week 2 MGT3045

Case Analysis

Analyze the following situation:

Martha has worked for John for two years. About 6 months ago, John asked Martha out to dinner. They had a good time together and agreed that they had some real interests in common outside of work. The pair dated for two months. Martha initially liked John, but he was beginning to get annoying.  John called her all the time, was very pushy about her seeing him, and wanted to control all aspects of her life, both at work and at home. Martha decided to call it off. When she told John that she did not want to see him personally anymore, he went crazy on her. He told her she would be sorry and that he would see to it that she regretted it.

John began to make life miserable for Martha at work. She suddenly started to get poor performance evaluations after two years of exemplary reviews. Even the managers above John were beginning to make comments about her poor attitude.  Martha decided it was time to act. She was worried she would be fired, all because John wanted her to continue to date him. She loved her job and knew she did quality work. She made an appointment with the HR manager.

Using the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991, and the two basic types of sexual harassment as described in our lecture (quid pro quo and hostile work environment), assess the type of sexual harassment Martha is experiencing.

Evaluate the obligations of the HR manager once Martha reports her concerns. If the HR manager investigates and finds Martha is telling the truth, what steps should be taken to comply with the EEOC? How does HRM offer an affirmative defense and prevail in a lawsuit.

Analyze the likelihood that John would be found guilty of sexually harassing Martha. If found in Martha’s favor, what should the HR manager do to remedy the situation within the workplace?

What sort of difficulty can you imagine the manager of an organization would be in if the organization did not routinely prepare cash flow forecasts and working capital analyses?

One of the worst things that can happen to a company is to run out of cash and cash equivalents, and even worse if they don’t realize it. Say a company is in dire need of a piece of equipment and the Accounts Payable Manager writes a check for the full value and the CFO signs it, and the equipment company picks it up and drops off the asset. The next day, that same company comes by and picks up the equipment and explains that the check bounced. What? That can’t be! Well, yes it can if you don’t have a routine Cash Flow Analysis that explains how liquid you are or are not.

That scenario would be even worse if it involved payroll checks as the employees line up at the Controller’s office wanting an immediate solution. The cash budget isn’t the resolution as not all of the customers paid on time, or an unexpected cash outlay occurred that dried up all of the cash. The resolution is a Cash Flow Analysis that pinpoints at any time exactly how much cash is available for use now and in the foreseeable future (to avoid “gotcha’s”).

Some companies are fortunate to have a line of credit to cover overdrafts of cash/credit as backup for operating expenses, but the finance charges are evil. Just as you don’t want to come up short of cash, you also don’t want a glut of cash sitting around slumbering. It takes an experienced Financial Manager to know the nuances of cash flow.

Second Reply:

A cash flow forecast is a computation which permits a business to anticipate how much cash they will have at a specific time sooner rather than later. It considers anticipated costs just as pay, which then, at that point permits the manager to find out about what their benefit will be. A working capital analysis is a significant piece of this, as it builds up the current resources and liabilities of an organization. This permits the administrator to perceive how much cash the organization as of now has accessible to spend. Setting up a cash flow forecast and a working capital analysis is a dependable method to deal with the monetary condition of the organization. In the event that a supervisor of an association doesn’t perform ordinary cash flow analysis and working capital analysis, the administrator may wind up in serve monetary troubles accordingly. Now and again this could cause for some business to have a scaled back workers, which implies more slow creation and generally more cash lost on the off chance that they can not stay aware of the interest of its clients.

Mandated reporting laws cross disciplines (counseling, psychology, medicine, nursing, education, etc.). Some professionals have criticized these laws on the basis of interfering with their professional relationship with children.
