Week2 M Discussion

Week 2 Discussion

Data/Information/Knowledge

1.  Discuss the relationship between data, information, and knowledge. Support your discussion with at least 3 academically reviewed articles.

2.  Why do organization have information deficiency problem? Suggest ways on how to overcome information deficiency problem.

Please use APA throughout.

Post your initial response no later than Friday of week 1. Please note that initial post not completed on the due date will receive zero grade. See class syllabus for late assignment policies. Review posting/discussion requirements

Read and respond to at two (2) of your classmates no later than the last day of week 1. In your response to your classmates, consider comparing your articles to those of your classmates. Below are additional suggestions on how to respond to your classmates’ discussions:

· Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence or research.

· Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

· Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research.

· Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.

· Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.

· Expand on your colleagues’ postings by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.

Read and respond to at two (2) of your classmates: 150 words

Classmate 1:

1.  What are the business costs or risks of poof data quality? Support your discussion with at least 3 references.

The building blocks of all systems is understanding and applying the following terms.

• Data

• Information

• Knowledge

DATA: Despite being hugely useful and everyone talking about how we live in, data on its own has a little or no meaning. It is raw and unprocessed. An example of data might be as simple as the number 100. This could be absolutely anything. Remember if we does not mean anything to you it is classified as DATA.

INFORMATION: Information must inform you of something. In other words, it must have a meaning. At this stage, you will have processed data and put it into context. For example, if we say 100 students, this adds meaning. However, this does not really inform us of anything. We need to put it into context. Adding the context by saying, 100 students are travelling to some place. We can say INFORMATION = DATA + MEANING + CONTEXT

KNOWLEDGE: Empowers us to make right decisions. We need to make an informed decision using the information we have. If we add, how the 100 students will get there. They cannot travel by aircraft as there may be no enough room, so they decide to travel by train. Therefore, knowledge is the process of applying a set of rules to information to help us make decisions.

2. Why do organization have information deficiency problem? Suggest ways on how to overcome information deficiency problem.

It’s difficult to comprehend what information that will be useful later. At that point regardless of whether we are informed or not one should have the capacity to yield required information somehow.  How would you quantify fulfillment, or advance towards an objective/change? Then we can overcome the information deficiency problem in organizations by storing and presenting that information in a way that is really useful. On the off chance that the information isn’t introduced well at the time choices are being made then most this work is lost.

Classmate 2:

Relationship between Data, Information and knowledge

The three words Data, Information and knowledge involves lot of fundamental concepts in the field of management along with the enterprise level understanding. Talking about data it is basically a raw form that is made out of observations and calculations. So basically data is nothing but information that is translated into a certain form that is effective for any process. This data is converted into binary digital form. Data is stored in different forms such as video files, audio files and also text, data is stored in certain formats.

Information is the result that is obtained from data that is processed that is useful to make beneficial for the users. Information is created by understating the relationships and also the link between the data. It is very important to know where, when and how do we get the information, this mainly useful for decision making in any organization. Information is mainly to take any kind of action and this further leads to the stage of knowledge and understating.

Knowledge is the tedious concept to define this can be referred to information that is being processed and structured in a certain manner to implement it into action. But this knowledge can be shared in the form of information and this turns out to be knowledge. So basically knowledge created for information to proceed for an action.

The relationship can be seen as attraction for an individual’s attention it very clean from the above definitions as any of the field above cannot be seen individually it is different form of understanding for taking information and knowledge, so this in depth seen as a linear sequence from one place to another in the form of data. But not in all the cases and scenarios this relationship is clear and straight it differs from org to org and separated by data models as well.

Deficiency problems in the organization

Basically any organization that lacks proper management leads to failure business small or big gets all their forces from the economy. Of course there is no instant solution for any business or an organization. Any problem cannot be eliminated immediately but can be mitigated and be avoided slowly. Having a wrong planning or designing a wrong marketing would lead to deficiencies, basically any business usually is product oriented and service oriented sometimes a customer based business.

So any individual should be able to identify what exactly is the business need, plan should be apt and budget also should be designed in an efficient manner one should not overestimate the calculation. It is always essential to know your audience and try to reach the organizations target accordingly. Financial support if also one of the manor deficiencies in an organization, any business to kick start is a tedious task so one must be sure about it and well prepared for their future scenarios. Calculating current profits we cannot estimate future business.

Bad customer service is one of the major deficiencies to the organization, when a company cannot meet the customer requirements and is not able to satisfy the customer with the product or service it is always got to dig deep and find solution accordingly one must find an alternate source that can handle the customers in a better manner.

The deficiencies can be avoided by having better management such as understanding and analyzing the information and satisfying customer needs for their respective business. Reducing the over load of information such as cutting down content. Auditing the companies outputs in regular intervals will make the work flow proper.

Reading Summaries

  1. Reading Summaries should be a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 500 words (approximately 1-2 pages in standard formatting)(THERE HAS TO BE 4 READING SUMMARIES OF MINIMUM 250 WORDS, THERE ARE 4 INDIVIDUAL READINGS)
  2. All reading summaries must follow standard formatting requirements. (That is, standard margins, font size, and paragraph spacing is observed. Students cannot manipulate font size, margins, and paragraph spacing to meet length requirements.)
  3. Reading Summaries require that you read a primary source selection from the end of each chapter, then write a short summary that identifies the thesis and outlines the main argument. Reading summaries are not about your opinion or perspective – they are expository essays that explain the content of the reading. All reading summaries must include substantive content based on the students reading of the material.
  4. When writing Reading Summaries, you may not quote the author without proper citations. In other words, if you use the exact words of the original author (copy-paste) you MUST do a proper citation. Similarly, if you use any other website (such as Wikipedia, Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, etc.) you must cite the source. Failure to cite sources properly is in violation of Student Rights and Responsibilities Manual which may result in grade penalties.   When in doubt, quote/cite your sources. All quotes, references, and ideas lifted from any source – including internet sources MUST be properly cited in MLA/APA format.
  5. All reading summaries must be thoroughly proof-read and checked for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Students should write in professional, academic prose and use only appropriate language. Spelling and grammar count towards your grade in every assignment.

Joins

For this assignment, continue to assume the role of data analyst at Adventure Works Cycling Company. As you work to address the business problem surrounding sales of the “LL Road Frame-Black 60,” you must continue to refine the data by condensing them into two tables. This requires you to join the table data sets together. While this is an important process, you must be aware of the data integrity issues that can occur as a result of completing joins.

Please note that when SQL queries are run, results are generated in the form of data. This data should be exported and saved to Excel for a visual check of accuracy.

Create a Microsoft Word document that includes the SQL query code used to explore the database tables and answer the following questions.

Complete the steps below to practice joins.

  1. Combine MyProduct and MyPriceHistory displaying the fields into a new temporary table called MyProductPriceHistory. Display ProductID, Name, EndDate, and List Price.
  2. Combine MyProduct and MySalesOrderDetail displaying the fields into a new temporary table called MySalesOrderDetailbyName. Display ProductID, Name, SalesOrderID, and Quantity.
  3. Combine MySalesOrderDetailbyName and ALLSalesOrderDates displaying the fields into a new temporary table called MySalesOrderDetailbyDate. Display ProductID, Name, OrderDate, and SumOfQuantity. This will require you using the SUM and GROUP BY statements.

Create a Word document that includes the SQL query code used for each of the joins listed. Additionally, identify and analyze the data integrity issues you encountered in SQL.

  1. Discuss bad queries and bad table data in your analysis.
  2. Explain the impact of the data integrity issues.
  3. Indicate what needs to be revised in the code.
  4. Discuss specifically what needs to be done to fix the data integrity issues created by the join. Please note that as part of your final project for the course you will be adding these new tables to the ERD you created in Topic 5.

Deliverable 4 – Using Sociological Theory to Understand Organizational Change (POWER POINT 12-16 Slides)

 Competency

This competency will allow you to demonstrate your ability to examine organizational changes that are due to technological changes and apply the sociological theory that would explain such change.

Instructions

You have recently started working for a local department store in the Operations Department. Upon settling into your new position, you come to realize that they have outdated business practices. As a department, you and your peers begin to discuss changes that your store could make to help the store become more profitable and more competitive in the marketplace. This leads to discussions about the evolution of business practices at larger corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, Kohl’s, etc. Partway through your discussion, your Director of Operations comes in and joins the conversation. He likes what he is hearing and starts to brainstorm out loud with the group how your store can get “more with the times.”

Knowing that every change within an organization is made for a specific reason, your director asks that you research some of the key theoretical perspectives that would explain how and why organizations change. Because of your sociological prowess from your days in school, you know that you can apply Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory to the reasons for organization change, but your supervisor has asked for a minimum of three theories that would support change.

In addition to conducting research on theoretical perspectives for change, your supervisor would like you to put together some sort of visual representation that demonstrates how each of the theories explains organizational change, and then highlight the one that you think is most applicable to your store. You will be presenting your visual presentation to store management in an effort to provide them information so that they can determine the avenues of change that are most appropriate for your store. Because your supervisor sees the value in the changes to the organization, he has encouraged you to create a presentation that will grab the attention of the audience and that includes both pictorial and written information so that all the audience can easily envision the application of the change to your environment.

For this presentation you are to reflect and address the following information/questions:

  • Provide a brief definition of Conflict Theory.
  • Provide a brief definition of Symbolic Interaction.
  • What changes have been made in various aspects of society (work, school, shopping, etc.)? Explain them through the lens of Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory.
  • How do Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interaction Theory explain or impact organizational change?
  • Identify at least one other sociological theory, and demonstrate how it applies to organizational change in our society.
  • Of the three identified theories (Conflict, Symbolic Interaction, and the theory of your choice), which theory do you believe best explains organizational changes in our society? Consider various aspects of the organizations that change i.e. technology, online, and face-to-face transactions, local versus global operations, etc.

Metaphysics

1) You must affirm or deny a proposition for a topic. For example, I agree to P or I deny P (P: mental causation exists.)

2) Write a position paper defending your view 400 words. Include objections to your view and your responses.  You can use any ideas or arguments that you think are relevant.

  1. Essentialism

P:  To say that we know the essential properties of something only requires that we consider its properties with Kripke’s modal metaphysics, the new realism about powers adds nothing.

Proof: Water is H20. H20 is the essential property of water. For something to be water it must have this property. Water has certain dispositional properties, i.e., it freezes at 32 degrees fahrenheit, it can extinguish a fire and so on. The ontology of powers insists that these properties in our world must be part of the essence of things. However, these dispositional properties don’t matter in defining the essence of something. For instance, it could be that water, that is H20, exists in some possible world (Mars!) in which it freezes at 10 degrees fahrenheit. Hence, dispositional properties are not part of the essence of things. The new realism adds nothing to our understanding to the essence of things.

2. Mental Causation

P: Mental Causation exists.

Proof: Bob looks into his refrigerator and sees fresh strawberries and a cup of chocolate mousse. He thinks “Well, I started my diet yesterday, but that chocolate mousse looks awfully good.”  He quickly shuts the fridge and opens it again. Then he grabs the cup of chocolate mousse. Hence, mental causation exists.

For question 1 the stance is Agree.

For question 2 the stance is Disagree.

Conflict Criminology and Sociology

Conflict Criminology and Sociology

The concept of critical criminology has been prevalent among criminologists for decades. A derivative of Marxist Theory, the primary focus of conflict criminology is the disparities linked to economic, social, and political affiliation. Chapter 8 in your primary textbook and the Karl Marx & conflict theory (Links to an external site.) video discuss social conflict and critical criminology (Siegel, 2015, & CrashCourse, 2017).

In your paper

  • Explain how conflict theory is related to both criminology and sociology using appropriate terminology.
  • Discuss how politics play a role in conflict theory using appropriate terminology.
  • Discuss how politics influence crime rates of the lower class using appropriate terminology.
  • Evaluate various sociological schools of crime causation using appropriate terminology.

Your paper must

  • Be three to five double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
  • Include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Use at least five scholarly sources in addition to the course text and the article being evaluated.
  • Document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Discussion post 6 & 7 – ART100

W5: Discussion Post 6 – Discussion Groups C 2

For this discussion post, like last week, you’ll select a work of related to what we’ve studied to learn more about and share with the class. Because we’ve covered a massive amount of art history in this one chapter, you have a lot to choose from (*like other chapters, this one covers so much and really should be further broken up into a chapter on each region but that is the nature of the survey!).

  1. Select a work of art from one of the curatorial areas of the Denver Art Museum linked below (it can be historical or contemporary):
  1. In 300 words or more, summarize in your own words what’s significant about your piece, what’s its meaning, and what you found intriguing about it after you learned about it. Your post is due Friday by 11:59pm.
    • You’ll need to post first to see other’s posts in your group.
    • Like other posts, this is an exercise in identifying the importance of a piece and it’s important for it to be in your own words. If you used other sources, please include those.
    • **A note: Most works don’t have a lot of information about them which is similar to what you’d come across when in a museum.  See how you can relate your work to what’s covered in the book and do a little research on your own. If you picked a work that is difficult to write about, I suggest you pick another as there are plenty to choose from. As with last week, I’m happy to offer guidance.
  2. Remember to:
    • Embed your image.
    • Include its info —  name of the artist (if known), title, date, and medium. Please include the geography and/or culture.
    • Include a link to the online entry in the museum’s collection. If you used other sources, please include those.
  3. Comment thoughtfully on two other posts by your classmates. Your comments are due Sunday by 11:59pm.
    • Your reply should be longer than one sentence and engage in a substantial way with what they posted.

Discussion 7

For this discussion post, I thought you all could do something a little different around two famous works of art from one this week’s chapters – Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Munch’s The Scream. Both are enduring and very popular artworks that have found their way into our popular culture.

  1. Watch the three videos on Munch’s The Scream and Van Gogh’s Starry Night that are in this week’s module.
    • There is one video for Van Gogh and two for Munch.  I’ll be able to see how much you’ve watched and some of your points for this discussion come from that.
  2. By Sunday, in 150-200 words or more, describe how you connect to either original work by Munch or Van Gogh.
    • Questions you can use to help guide you include: What did you think this work meant and was that the same or different after  learning about it from the videos and textbook reading? What stands out to you about the artist and what they were attempting to do with their art? What do you like about their approach to painting? What questions do you still about about the work?   (Links to an external site.)
  3. Next find a contemporary take on one of the two paintings. You’ll need to post first to see everyone else’s.
    • This can be a parody, a reimagining of the painting edited to include something else, a meme, new use (say an album cover) or recreation. Find it in a film or music video? No problem add away. It’s totally open! See the two examples below. Again, you just need to pick one
  4. Then, in 100-150 words or more, explain what was done to change the work from the original to your reworking.
    • Think about what new meaning does this create? Why do you think the original work, the Van Gogh or Munch, was picked for this parody?
  5. No need to comment or include sources here as this prompt is more based on opinion.
  6. But….remember to embed your image!

communication strategy paper

Today, there are a variety of ways in which health information may be communicated to the public including traditional methods such as brochures, posters, magazines, newspapers and other news outlets, and newer methods including mobile and web based applications, social media, and streaming media. These methods may include audio or visual elements or both. To effectively communicate health risk information, consideration must be given to the target audience. For this Assignment, you will select and support a communication strategy for different audiences and sectors. Your Instructor will provide you with a current health risk scenario and three different possible audiences and sectors.

By Day 7 of Week 10

Prepare and submit a 2-3 page paper that includes the following:

  • An APA style title page, including your name, date, course and section, and title
  • APA style headings for each section below
    • Explain what considerations are important when selecting a strategy for a particular audience and sector. Support your answer. Provide examples of communication strategies that can be used to convey health risk information to different audiences and sectors.
    • Select a communication strategy for each of the provided audiences and sectors and explain why you believe it is the most effective way to convey risk and prevention information to that audience and sector. Support your answer.
    • Explain how you would evaluate the efficacy of your selected communication strategies. Note:The title page and References page do not count towards the paper’s page requirement.
  • Cite the sources within your text in APA style
  • Include an APA formatted reference list at the end of your paper.

Note: The title page and References page do not count towards the paper’s page requirement.

Your Instructor uses the Module 6 Assignment 1 Rubric to grade this Assignment.

Highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus is spreading across the United States. Those at the highest risk are pregnant women, young children under the age of 5, and adults older than age 65. While the available flu vaccine is expected to work well with this strain, there are limited supplies.  The following populations need to be informed about the risk and to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

  • Residents of Morningside Nursing Home
  • Parents of ABC Preschool
  • New immigrants from Nigeria

Be sure to discuss all three populations!

Case Study on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – 8 Pages – APA – No Extension or Negotiation

CSR is an evolving concept and a set of practices. There are increasingly more standards and guidelines for companies to follow, but there remain many differences among companies in how sustainability practices are employed and deployed. As a leader and as a student of sustainability, you must learn to sort, prioritize, and negotiate among CSR desires and needs in order to balance these with what is possible and ethical.

You will create a case study on an organization that is listed in the 2018 Fortune 500 Global Index that addresses the following:

  • Create a description of your organization that provides the reader with its Fortune rank, type of industry, its Global Standard Industrial Classification (GSIC), CEO name, number of employees, headquarters, number of offices globally, reported sales and organization performance over the last fiscal year (including data from Standard Poor’s and one other source).
  • Evaluate the organization’s CSR position. Incorporate evidence of its compliance with or violation of CSR principles, including information from the organization’s website and two sources external to the company. (Note: These two external sources are not considered part of the five scholarly sources that are required for this assignment.). Incorporate the ranking of the organization’s CSR and sustainability practices from at least two rating sources, including one non-profit or NGO source. (Note: These two rating sources are not considered part of the five scholarly sources that are required for this assignment.)
  • Evaluate the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, using the SWOT model, relative to its CSR and sustainability performance.
  • Devise a concluding plan that provides your opinion of the organization’s overall level of social responsibility.
  • Here is the link (Links to an external site.) to the 2018 Fortune 500 Global Index.

Your well-written paper must adhere to the following parameters:

  • 8  pages in length, not including the title and reference pages
  • Supported by twelve references, with at least ten scholarly references. Remember, you must support your thinking/opinions and prior knowledge with references; all facts must be supported; in-text references used throughout the assignment must be included in an APA-formatted reference list
  • Review the grading rubric, which can be found in the Module 8 folder
  • Formatted according to the CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
