Training

 Assignment 1: Discussion—Training

You are a manager in the HR department at WidgetMaker. It has recently been brought to your attention that many of the workers require more training to accurately perform their jobs.

Using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research the costs and benefits of implementing training programs.

Write a memo to company executives explaining why adequate training is important to the company and how the financial costs can be justified.

Within your memo, address the following:

  • Evaluate the costs and benefits to both the company and the employee. How do the benefits justify the costs?
  • What factors should the company consider when designing a training program? How should its effectiveness be evaluated?

After your initial posts discuss the following:

  • Under which circumstances is training not transferable from company to company?
  • From a management perspective, is it ever disadvantageous to hire individuals who have been previously trained at other companies? Why or why not?
  • How much can the company culture of one company affect the training required at a different company?

By the due date assigned, post your response to the Discussion Area. Throughthe end of the module, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Your response should be thorough and address all components of the discussion question in detail, include citations of all sources, where needed, according to the APA Style, and demonstrate accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Description

Assignment 3: Assault, Battery, and Crimes against Persons
Due

Review the following scenario in order to complete this assignment:

(A) is walking to towards her car in the shopping mall parking lot when a man suddenly jumps in front of her, points a knife in her face, and demands her purse. The attacker strikes (A) and rips the handle of her purse. Fortunately, (A) took self-defense class and hits the attacker with her knee and fists, keeps her purse, and runs to safety.

Use the Internet or Strayer databases to research assault, battery, and crimes against persons.

Write a four to six (3) page paper in which you:

1.      Compare and contrast the key similarities and differences between the crime of assault with a deadly weapon and the crime of felonious and aggravated battery. Provide one (1) example of each crime to support your response.

2.      Determine whether or not the jurisdiction in which the crime has occurred should consider the man’s actions as assault. Next, determine whether or not the jurisdiction should punish the man’s actions as battery. Justify your response.

3.      Suggest one (1) different fact pattern that would change the scenario from felonious and aggravated assault and / or battery to simple assault. Support the validity of your response.

Consider the following change to the scenario. (A) is forced at knifepoint into her car and made to drive the suspect away from the mall, where they encounter a police roadblock. (A) is not allowed to leave the car, despite the police negotiator’s demand that she be allowed to exit the car.

1.      Discuss the crime of kidnapping. Next, debate whether or not the suggested change in Question 3 would allow the court to convict the attacker for the crime of kidnapping. Provide a rationale to support your response.

2.      Differentiate between the crimes of hostage taking and kidnapping. Support or critique the notion that one of the two crimes is more serious than the other. Justify your response.

Consider the following change to the scenario. (A) and the attacker are romantically linked and are having an argument in the shopping mall parking lot. (A) pulls a knife from her purse and swings it at the attacker.

1.      Debate whether or not (A)’s action would require the attacker to defend himself. Provide a rationale to support your response. https://samples.eliteacademicessays.com/professional-code-of-ethics-2/

2.      Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar types of websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Probability and Statistics for Business and Economics

I need at least two pages.

I also included a word document with the same information:

1.  Read the article at the following link:

https://www.the74million.org/article/alarming-statistics-tell-the-story-behind-americas-college-completion-crisis-nearly-a-third-of-all-college-student-still-dont-have-a-degree-six-years-later/ (Links to an external site.)

a.  Provide a detailed summary of the article in terms of the key points, major issues raised, what you perceived as the most important facts, and any suggestions or recommendations you might have etc.

b.  Evaluate the article and identify the important factors which the author overlooked or were not taken into context and might have led to different conclusions.

c.  Comment on the various statistics which were used throughout the article and whether the statistics provided enough evidence to support the writer’s position.  If you were to write a similar article, which statistics would you collect that the writer did not mention, and why would you collect them?  What would be the importance of the statistics?

d.  Based on your review of the article, provide alternatives to the author’s view, that you believe are the most significant indicators of the failure to earn a college degree within six years.

2.  Using the information in the article:

a.  Choose or develop an independent and a dependent variable related to the information.  Clearly state how you would collect data related to the variables and describe the type of relationship you would expect to see from simple linear regression analysis.

b.  Identify a significant moderating variable between your dependent and independent variable and explain the impact of the moderating variable.  Explain how a college student, the college administration, and the Department of Education could benefit from your regression analysis and the specific variables you identified.  State how your regression analysis could change the outcome for students.

c.  You are now the president of a university.  Describe the actions you would take, based on the analysis you completed.

Note: Please be sure to respond in a manner which demonstrates that you have thoroughly read the article, that you are familiar with linear regression analysis, and that you can make inferences and decisions based on the analysis.

Case Study 5 -2: Security Breach at Equifax

In May 2017, it was revealed that Equifax has joined other high-profile companies including Marriott, Home Depot Inc., Target Corporation, Anthem, Blue Cross, and Yahoo! as a victim of cyberattacks. Equifax is one of the largest credit-rating companies in the United States and operates or has investments in 24 countries and employs over 11,000 employees worldwide. Hackers gained access to the Equifax network in mid-May 2017 and attacked the company for 76 days. In July 29, 2017, Equifax staff discovered the intrusion during routine checks of the operating status and configuration of IT systems. This was 76 days after the initial attack. Hackers accessed Social Security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses, and some driver’s license numbers and credit card numbers, which impacted over 148 million people. The security system at the company did not keep up with the aggressive company growth and the company failed to modernize its security system. According to the report the company did not take action to address vulnerabilities that it was aware of prior to the attack. According to Equifax, hackers exploited a software vulnerability known as Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638. This vulnerability was disclosed back in March 2017. There were clear and simple instructions of how to fix the problem from the software provider Apache. It was the responsibility of Equifax to follow the recommendations offered by Apache right away. According to Apache, software patches were made available in March two months before hackers began accessing Equifax data. In addition to the previously mentioned vulnerability, the hackers found a file containing unencrypted usernames and passwords. Hackers also found an expired security certificate on a device for monitoring network traffic. This indicated that Equifax did not detect that data was being stolen. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) report indicated that the hack took place because Equifax failed to segment its databases into smaller networks. This, in turn, allowed the attackers a direct and easy access to all of its customers’ data. As part of fixing the security issues the company hired a new chief information security officer, Jamil Farshchi, and has invested $200 million on data security infrastructure.

Answer the following questions in a Microsoft® Word document and save the file on your computer with your last name in the file. (Example: module_05_case1_Jones.doc)

  1. Which vulnerability enabled hackers to breach the security system at Equifax?
  2. Was the breach preventable? Discuss.
  3. How is the company going to stop future attacks?

Lewis, Aydin, and Powell Reading Assignment

In either the text box below or in a separate document, answer the following questions about the text.  You can just number your answers or copy and paste the questions- whatever is easiest for you.  Aim to use full sentences and to use your words– don’t copy exactly what the original text says unless it is for a quote.  Probably 2-3 sentences max per response will be enough to answer each question (aside from the list you make for question 3)When you’re done, upload your document or submit your answers in the text box here to receive 1 point of credit towards the Pre-Writing of Essay #4.

Questions to Answer:

  1. Who wrote the book this excerpt is from, March: Book 2, and why do you think they wrote it? When was it written? [Feel free to look this up online]
  2. Why do you think the authors chose to use a graphic novel format instead of the more traditional novel format for this book/story? Basically, what could a graphic novel provide that a regular novel could not?
  3. This excerpt focuses on leaders who played a role in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (whether supportive or unsupportive), as well as the events leading up to it. Who were those leaders and what role did they play?  List each person that’s mentioned and how they felt about the March (so, whether they supported it or not).
  4. In the excerpt, there are some backgrounds in the panels that are either all white or all black, unlike the other backgrounds which tend to be in grayscale. What kind of ideas are presented in the panels with black backgrounds?  White backgrounds?  Why do you think the illustrator chose these particular colors to convey those ideas?
  5. The illustrator uses the size of the comic panels and their layout to emphasize important ideas.  Which ideas seem to be emphasized by the illustrator most?
  6. The illustrator also uses different fonts and typefaces to emphasize important words or ideas. What type of words or ideas are put in bold or emphasized?  Why do you think the illustrator chose to emphasize them?
  7. Finally, although this excerpt focuses on the leaders of the march, it ends with an image of the people participating in it taking over and actually beginning it without the leaders. In the end, who do you think actually lead the march: the people (the collective groups) or the leaders (the individuals)?

Presentation

As promised, here are the instructions for the final paper due May 20th (20% of the final grade) and a 5 minute in-class presentation of the paper either on May 6th or May 13th (10% of the final grade). After next week, Thursdays will be allocated to working on your individual presentation and papers.

Subject:****** My topic is autism in children/adolescents *******

Presentation of the paper

This is based on the paper you started to write/you’re writing and in either powerpoint or word to share on Zoom, whichever is easier for you and helps you – but the point is to talk about your work for 5 min:

·      introduce your topic

·      present your research question ·      describe what format/method you’re using (lit review? observation? case study? biography?) ·   explain why this seemed to be the best format you’re writing that briefly describes and asks questions about your study ·     describe how this project idea relates to developmental psychology, with an example – for example, if you’re doing a literature review, present the variables you’re researching; if you’re doing an observation, present the children (age, gender etc), activity, environment, setting, social interactions (even if you have not undertaken the observation yet)

See paper instructions below on what to write. Also please find on Blackboard under ‘Course Documents’ — ‘Samples For Final Research Project’ what students previously have done in other classes.

Paper

You will be producing a final paper on a topic of your choice from the field of developmental psychology, around 6-8 pages (double-spaced). In line with our readings and discussions, it can also expand to be about family or social service issues. Please when you pick your topic during the term, let me know which week, chapter, readings, subfield that it is related to and run your idea with me (by the end of March) so that we will decide together whether it is feasible.

Some project format ideas:

Literature review with an argument:

If you choose this option, you can get some ideas from our discussion questions to conduct your literature review. You are free to ask ‘how’ questions (i.e. how does attachment develop in infants?) as well as questions looking at association between variables (i.e. is there a relationship between authoritarian parenting and self-esteem (or academic achievement etc…) in middle childhood?). Simply anything that has interested you in the course based on the lectures or discussions. You can also draw on our discussion questions we pose weekly. Please try to use around 8 research articles that look at the question you’re interested in and is looking at the definitions and variables you draw on. You can also use some of the articles we read during discussions, or draw from the references included in our textbook.

But for further support that is essential for your research, start your research at google scholar or Baruch library website (from databases please pick PsyInfo or related psychology or social sciences data bases where you can find relevant literature) and type keywords: https://guides.newman.baruch.cuny.edu/databases/O-P

O – P – Databases – Research Guides at Baruch College646-312-1600 151 East 25th Street, New York, NY 10010guides.newman.baruch.cuny.edu  Observation of children’s interaction or play in your household or family setting:  In a household or family setting, observe a child or a group of children who are playing. Provide information on ages of children and describe what you see in terms of play environment, types of play and social interactions (and what you see relevant that you would like to mention) and what is significant in your opinion about it. Make sure to refer to some theories that explain play and play behavior that we covered in the class, by also finding additional resources to cover that.

Case study of a children’s organization or a community organization working for children or families (in your neighborhood, home country, or if it’s a large international organization, choose their particular program or operation):

Describe the organization, brief history, its vision and mission, what they’re doing, how they evolved, who they are providing services for: as you do that you can do a review of news article or a historical review of policy documents on the organization.

Movie/series or book critique: Make sure to both summarize and then go on critiquing the book and the movie. You can also use one of the options below, or choose your own book or movie that centers on a child’s perspective, childhood, play, adolescent, aging, or family issue/setting/relationships.

Biography of a child psychologist/researcher/child or play advocate (you can use a mixture of library website research + news articles + opensource textbooks or a movie)

Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services, & Environmental Decline

If you watch or read the news, you get the idea that biodiversity concerns are principally about pandas, tigers, elephants, whales, polar bears, etc. These are what conservation biologists refer to as the flagship species biodiversity, i.e. species who you are likely to recognize and care about. The flagship ecosystems are tropical rainforests and coral reefs. No matter how you divide up the planet in terms of what is important from a sustainability perspective, biodiversity is always one of the main categories. This probably seems strange to the average person who wonders why scientists are so concerned about the survival of these species. After all, will the planet really be in peril if they end up existing only in zoos? The reality is that the biodiversity concerns of scientists are with the entire, vast array of millions of species from tiny to large that drive ecosystem functions, functions upon which we humans depend in innumerable ways. The other reality is that it usually takes something as a cute as a panda or big as an elephant to get the attention of most people.

System functions are things such as photosynthesis and nutrient cycling which are dependent on bacteria, fungi, algae, plankton at one end and plants, herbivores, and carnivores at the other end. System functions also include physical processes such as rainfall, wind, ocean currents, etc. Both ends of the living component (large species and small species) need to be in balance for the systems to function in a manner that works optimally for humans as well as the organisms that comprise the systems. The “work” that these organisms do that we take advantage of without having to “pay” anything for is referred to as ecosystem services, i.e. the ecological systems and species are providing a service to humans for free. An example would be the breakdown of organic materials in the soil by bacteria and fungi that is needed for plant growth which translates into successful farming. At an even higher level, tropical rainforests are the water pumps that initiate the movement of the atmosphere which determines climate patterns worldwide. Take a look at this video to see what that looks like – Global Atmospheric Circulation  Now that is one heck of an ecosystem function! In addition, there are millions of other uses made of species from antibiotics to foods and medicines for everything from blood thinners (saliva from vampire bats) to cancer medicines – some of the latter are made from snake venoms, vampire bat saliva, etc. The list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, much of the world’s biodiversity is in serious trouble due to both the direct and indirect actions of human activities. The situation has become so obvious and acute that there is a serious proposal to create a new geological period name, the Anthropocene, to formally recognize human dominance over the planet. Read this recent piece to get a better idea of what is happening beyond our many city limits. Species Decline Dramatic.

INSTRUCTIONS

Read Chapters 5-7 in the eText and do a web search to provide information and data to address the following questions. There are dozens of videos on biodiversity and ecosystem services on YouTube and ScienceDaily, ScienceNews, Google, and Wikipedia are excellent places to search for information.

Choose a single ecosystem of any type – desert, prairie, tropical rainforest, boreal forest, etc. – of your choice and briefly describe its diversity.

For the ecosystem that you chose, describe 3 ecosystem services it provides to humans.

What are the biggest threats to the biodiversity in your chosen ecosystem?

*Use 3-4 academic references in APA format with in-text citations to support your initial post!
