This project provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of theoretical perspectives of deviance and their application to social issues and problems.

First, you must choose a form of deviance that interests you. This could be any topic we have been studying or will study or something else we are not covering that interests you. For example, topics might include: bulimia, hoarding, binge drinking, cutting, etc. Then, take two theories that interest you and compare and contrast them in terms of their application to the topic you have chosen. You may choose theories from Chapters 3-11 of Adler and Adler’s text.

You must fully and sensitively master, think through, and expand on the central concepts and questions of the two theories you have selected and stay grounded in our course readings, material I have posted on Blackboard, and class discussions. Draw on course material wherever possible in your project. This means you need to quote directly from readings in our text. It is more important that you draw more on our course material rather than rely on materials from other classes or from library or Internet research. I trust that you will agree that we have plenty of rich material to work with right here.

I am interested in how you demonstrate your own ability to think critically. Avoid using very long quotations and close paraphrasing of the readings. Some quoting from the readings is important though to support your points where applicable. I am most interested in how you discuss and interpret ideas in your own words and how you come to evaluate these theories in light of the topic you choose. When citing any sources, please be consistent throughout.

This paper must be two pages maximum. Late papers will not be accepted. Your paper must have page numbers, be double spaced and in 12 point Times font, in black ink, and with one inch margins. Be sure to put your full name on the file and on the actual paper.

The paper is worth 20% of your final course grade. I hope you enjoy doing this project and having a new way to think about theories set forth in the course.

Strategy, Planning, and Selection

Scenario

Assume  for this assignment that you are being highly considered for a  director-level HR management position for a best-in-class national  retailer. You are in the final phase of the interview process and must  respond to the interview panel regarding specific questions and  scenarios that will help them determine if you are a good fit for the  new role. The company’s culture is centered on the effective development  of strategy, plans, and selection criteria aimed at building and  sustaining a competitive and profitable organization. It will be  extremely important that you respond with a strategic mindset in order  to convince the organization you are able to help them ensure the  execution of the business strategy.

Instructions

Write a six- to seven-page paper in which you do the following:

  • Analyze  and discuss types of business strategies (cost leadership,  differentiation, and focus or niche) and select which one you would deem  more appropriate for an “efficiency-minded” retail organization and  explain your rationale. How would the selected strategy ultimately  affect how HR does its job?
  • Examine  the four approaches to job design or redesign and provide an example  (not a definition) of each. Then, make your case on the importance of  effective job design applications in supporting the overall strategic  goals of the organization.
  • Consider  at least 3 challenges and constraints in recruiting and discuss. What  advice would you give to the management team to deal with the challenges  or constraints? Be specific.
  • Review  the selection process exhibit on page 188 of the Lussier textbook. Now,  identify and describe 2–3 additional selection process ideas that might  add value and effectiveness to the process you reviewed. Example: 5 Tips for Designing an Effective Employee Selection System. Also, what problems should HR and management teams avoid during the selection process?
  • Use at least four quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: You  may only use the resources listed in the Course Resources section and  those that are specifically provided by the professor.

and class lectures, you will be completing two Analytical Essays (3-5 full pages each).  To garner the highest possible score on each of these Analytical Essays, you must draft a clear thesis statement in the introduction to each of your Analytical Essays, and you must substantiate that thesis by referencing and analyzing specific information and ideas that are covered in the class readings, lectures, and/or media presentations.  In other words, it will not be enough to simply type, “I think that….” You will have to denote specific details from the lessons and explicitly cite the book pages, speeches, documentaries, and/or other sources you will be using to argue why your thesis is correct.  You will need to cite your sources in compliance with the Kate Turabian/Chicago Manual style of citation.  (See pages 11-12 of the syllabus.)

For the Second Analytical Essay, you must cite at least 4 sources.  For the First Analytical Essay, all 4 sources had to be in-class sources.  For this Second Analytical Essay, at least 2 of the sources must be in-class sources.  Any additional sources can be in-class or outside sources.  However, you must properly cite every source you use.

For this second of two Analytical Essays, draft a 3-5 full paged response to the following prompt:

How similar and different are the issues faced by and tactics used by proponents of the Black Power Movement of the late-1960s from those faced by and used by proponents of the modern-day #BlackLivesMatter movement?  And, what do the similarities and differences in public responses to those movements during their respective eras reveal about racial progress in America?

JavaScript Exercises

This is in JavaScript

1. Write a program that uses the TokenScanner class to display the longest word that appears in a file chosen by the user. A word should be defined as any consecutive string of letters and digits, just as it is in the TokenScanner class.

2. Write a program called CountWordFrequencies that reads a sequence of lines and produces a table showing how many times each word appears. Your program should be able to replicate the following sample run:

Enter the lines of text, ending with a blank line.

One fish

Two fish

Red fish

Blue fish

Blue: 1

Fish: 4

One: 1

Red: 1

Two: 1

3. Write a function elapsedTime that returns how many milliseconds are required to perform an operation. The elapsedTime function takes two parameters. The first is a callback function that implements the operation whose running time you want to measure. The second argument, which is optional and defaults to 1, indicates how many repetitions of the function call should occur between the time measurements. Although it is impossible to use Date.now to measure short running time, you can for example, see how long it takes to call a function 100,000 times and then compute the average running time by dividing the total elapsed time by the number of repetitions. You could therefore see how long it takes for the Math library to calculate the square root of 2 by calling: elapsedTime(function() {Math.sqrt(2);}, 100000)

4. When playing Scrabble, one of the most useful things to memorize is the list of all legal two-letter words. It is easy to use the English lexicon to create a list of two-letter words, but there are at least two strategies for doing so. The most natural one is to iterate through the words for doing so. The most natural one is to iterate through the words in the lexicon and print those whose length is two. A somewhat less obvious strategy is to generate all 26×26 combinations of letters and see which ones are words. Implement each of these strategies and then use the elapsedTime function from the preceding exercise to see which strategy is more efficient.

5. One of the most important strategic principles in Scrabble is to conserve your S tiles, because the rules for English plurals mean that many words take an S-hook at the end. Some, of course, allow an S tile to be added at the beginning, but it turns out that there are 680 words including for example the words cold and hot tat allow an S-hook on both ends. Write a program that uses the EnglishLexicon class to display a list of all such words.

Week 1 EDUC 4205 Application

Application: Infant Settings as Supportive Systems    As you have been learning throughout your program and in the first week of this course, quality infant settings provide supportive environments for very young children and their families. In this course, you are exploring the role developmentally appropriate practice and programs play in creating nurturing, respectful environments that emphasize partnerships with families.  Before you begin your Week 1 Application, review the outline below in order to plan effectively: •Week 1: Infant Settings as Supportive Systems. You will develop a newsletter that provides information on the role infant settings play in supporting young children and their families. •Week 2: Observing Infant Development. You will practice observation skills within an infant setting and learn more about the development of a child between the ages of birth and 18 months. •Week 3: There is no Application this week; however you will apply much of what you learn in Week 3 when you participate in the observation assignment in Week 4. •Week 4: Observing Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Part 2: You will observe and reflect on the role indoor and outdoor environments and curriculum play in supporting healthy infant development and learning. •Week 5: Developmentally Appropriate Programming from the Teacher’s Perspective. You will interview an infant teacher regarding the role s/he believes developmentally appropriate programming plays in supporting healthy infant and family development and learning.  For your Application assignment this week, imagine that you are a director of an infant program, and have been asked by a community leader to create a newsletter that brings to life the role infant settings play in supporting young children’s healthy development and learning. Reflect on what you have learned in Chapters 1 & 2 about the vital role infant settings can play in the lives of very young children and their families, and how infant settings are impacted by community, state, and national factors. Be sure that your newsletter addresses the following: •How infant care meets pressing family needs today •The role of infant teachers in supporting infant and family development and learning •How factors external to infant settings—such as government policies and funding—impact quality care •Why high-quality, developmentally appropriate infant care is an important aspect of every community  Before you begin, note:  Take time to think about what you want to say and how you can make the information you want to communicate clear and useful. Though an elaborate design for your newsletter is not a requirement of this assignment, give your newsletter a title and also consider charting the information into short articles using titles that will capture the attention of readers. To cover the points above, you may also include a short editorial that expresses your professional views on at least one of these topics and sections that use a series of bullet points to communicate your thinking in concise and clear ways. Additionally, do not forget to cite your sources to substantiate your thinking and recommend one or two resources to your readers.   Assignment length: 2 pages
