MODULE 4 – CASE- MGT412- LABOR LAW AND UNIONIZATION

Review the background materials. Imagine that you have applied for a position as an HR executive in a private-sector corporation. As part of the interview process, you have been asked to prepare written notes and a PowerPoint presentation of your outline with voiceover responding to the following interview questions:

  • When a business anticipates that its workforce is trying to unionize, which laws and legal issues are most important for the business leaders to know about?
  • What is the role of unions in the modern American labor force?
  • How is the Human Resources Management function different in a unionized private-sector workforce setting?
  • Would you prefer to work with a unionized or non-unionized workforce? Explain.

Important: Be sure to submit a Word document in which you provide your notes and cite and reference along with the other sources utilized to prepare the presentation.

Portofolio Management

Question 1:

As a recent CUD graduate, Bloomberg Dubai found your cv interesting and appoints you as their market analyst. You are provided with the single index model result for Vodafone LLC stock. The S&P500 market index is used as the market proxy. The returns data are given, and the single index model result is as follows:

                              Returns                            Market Index

                              Vodafone                           S&P500

1-Jan-17                 4.0%                                    -2%

2-Jan-17                 1.5%                                    -4%

3-Jan-17                  5.0%                                   -6%

4-Jan-17                                                              -2%

                                                Coefficients

Alpha                                        0.0593

Beta                                         0.5214

Given a standard deviation of the error of  0.0201

A.  If the S&P500 market index is expected to go change from 2500 to 2750, what is the expected return on the stock above? Show your workings. (1 mark)

B.  Provide some clear justifications why you would use the single index model over the Markowitz model in determining the variables required to construct a client’s portfolio made up of 20 stocks? [2 marks]

C.  Estimate Vodafone’s total risk (standard deviation) using the Single Index Model. [2 marks)

D.  Evaluate the impact of Vodafone’s market-specific risk relative to the stock’s variance. (2marks]

E.  You are looking into the construction of a portfolio, which will be made up of two stocks, namely Vodafone and Billabong (Ticker: BG). Given the beta of BBG is 0.65, and the standard deviation of BBG is 3%, calculate the correlation coefficient between the two stocks. [2 marks]

F.  If you must decide between creating a portfolio made up of Vodafone and BBG based on the results in (e), and a portfolio made up of Vodafone and Yahoo which has a correlation coefficient of -0.75, which one would you recommend? Explain your answer. [2 marks)

G.  if you want to construct a portfolio based on 50% Vodafone, 20% Billabong and the rest invested in a risk-tree asset, what would be the portfolio beta? Show your workings. (1.5 marks)

8.Evaluate one strength and one limitation of feminist theory in working with the client.

                                        Jake Levy

Identifying Data: Jake Levy is a 31-year-old, married, Jewish Caucasian male. Jake’s wife, Sheri, is 28 years old. They have two sons, Myles (10) and Levi (8). The family resides in a two-bedroom condominium in a middle-class neighborhood in Rockville, MD. They have been married for 10 years.

Presenting Problem: Jake, an Iraq War veteran, came to the Veterans Affairs Health Care Center (VA) for services because his wife has threatened to leave him if he does not get help. She is particularly concerned about his drinking and lack of involvement in their sons’ lives. She told him his drinking has gotten out of control and is making him mean and distant. Jake reports that he and his wife have been fighting a lot and that he drinks to take the edge off and to help him sleep. Jake expresses fear of losing his job and his family if he does not get help. Jake identifies as the primary provider for his family and believes that this is his responsibility as a husband and father. Jake realizes he may be putting that in jeopardy because of his drinking. He says he has never seen Sheri so angry before, and he saw she was at her limit with him and his behaviors.
Family Dynamics: Jake was born in Alabama to a Caucasian, Eurocentric family system. He reports his time growing up to have been within a “normal” family system. However, he states that he was never emotionally close to either parent and viewed himself as fairly independent from a young age. His dad had previously been in the military and was raised with the understanding that his duty is to support his country. His family displayed traditional roles, with his dad supporting the family after he was discharged from military service. Jake was raised to believe that real men do not show weakness and must be the head of the household. Jake’s parents are deceased, and he has a sister who lives outside London. He and his sister are not very close but do talk twice a year. Sheri is an only child, and although her mother lives in the area, she offers little support. Her mother never approved of Sheri marrying Jake and thinks Sheri needs to deal with their problems on her own. Jake reports that he has not been engaged with his sons at all since his return from Iraq, and he keeps to himself when he is at home.

Employment History: Jake is employed as a human resources assistant for the military. Jake works in an office with civilians and military personnel and mostly gets along with people in the office. Jake is having difficulty getting up in the morning to go to work, which increases the stress between Sheri and himself. Shari is a special education teacher in a local elementary school. Jake thinks it is his responsibility to provide for his family and is having stress over what is happening to him at home and work. He thinks he is failing as a provider.
Social History: Jake and Sheri identify as Jewish and attend a local synagogue on major holidays. Jake tends to keep to himself and says he sometimes feels pressured to be more communicative and social. Jake believes he is socially inept 11 and not able to develop friendships. The couple has some friends, since Shari gets involved with the parents in their sons’ school. However, because of Jake’s recent behaviors, they have become socially isolated. He is very worried that Sheri will leave him due to the isolation.

Mental Health History: Jake reports that since his return to civilian life 10 months ago, he has difficulty sleeping, frequent heart palpitations, and moodiness. Jake had seen Dr. Zoe, a psychiatrist at the VA, who diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Zoe prescribed Paxil to help reduce his symptoms of anxiety and depression and suggested that he also begin counseling. Jake says that he does not really understand what PTSD is but thought it meant that a person who had it was “going crazy,” which at times he thought was happening to him. He expresses concern that he will never feel “normal” again and says that when he drinks alcohol, his symptoms and the intensity of his emotions ease. Jake describes that he sometimes thinks he is back in Iraq, which makes him feel uneasy and watchful. He hates the experience and tries to numb it. He has difficulty sleeping and is irritable, so he isolates himself and soothes this with drinking. He talks about always feeling “ready to go.” He says he is exhausted from being always alert and looking for potential problems around him. Every sound seems to startle him. He shares that he often thinks about what happened “over there” but tries to push it out of his mind. Nighttime is the worst, as he has terrible recurring nightmares of one particular event. He says he wakes up shaking and sweating most nights. He adds that drinking is the one thing that seems to give him a little relief.
Educational History: Sheri has a bachelor’s degree in special education from a local college. Jake has a high school diploma but wanted to attend college upon his return from the military.
Military History: Jake is an Iraqi War veteran. He enlisted in the Marines at 21 years old when he and Shari got married due to Sheri being pregnant. The family was stationed in several states prior to Jake being deployed to Iraq. Jake left the service 10 months ago. Sheri and Jake had used military housing since his marriage, making it easier to support the family. On military bases, there was a lot of social support and both Jake and Sheri took full advantage of the social systems available to them during that time.
Medical History: Jake is physically fit, but an injury he sustained in combat sometimes limits his ability to use his left hand. Jake reports sometimes feeling inadequate because of the reduction in the use of his hand and tries to push through because he worries how the injury will impact his responsibilities as a provider, husband, and father. Jake considers himself resilient enough to overcome this disadvantage and “be able to do the things I need to do.” Sheri is in the good physical condition and has recently found out that she is pregnant with their third child.
Legal History: Jake and Sheri deny having criminal histories.
Alcohol and Drug Use History: As teenagers, Jake and Sheri used marijuana and drank. Both deny the current use of marijuana but report they still drink. Sheri drinks socially and has one or two drinks over the weekend. Jake reports that he has four to five drinks in the evenings during the week and eight to ten drinks on Saturdays and Sundays. Jake spends his evenings on the couch drinking beer and watching TV or playing video games. Shari reports that Jake drinks more than he realizes, doubling what Jake has reported.
Strengths: Jake is cognizant of his limitations and has worked on overcoming his physical challenges. Jake is resilient. Jake did not have any disciplinary actions taken against him in the military. He is dedicated to his wife and family.
Jake Levy: father, 31 years old
Sheri Levy: mother, 28 years old
Myles Levy: son, 10 years old
Levi Levy: son, 8 years old

Technology Support of a Great Workplace

We now know that so many more things matter to employees in the workplace than organizations once did.  The challenge is achieving the capability to measure and improve the areas that matter, and there are now so many. The conversation between Alley and Robert about organizational cultural alignment, personal wellness, employee surveys (with lots of power to vary delivery structure), recognition framework from all directions, peers, leaders, and direct reports tells us how important engagement is. Finding the right platform to support all of those HR needs is not easy and can be done incorrectly. Now, what do Alley and Robert need to do to make sure they pick the best possible platform to support the most successful engagement model?

  • What are some key criteria for selecting an effective platform to support employee engagement programs for the organization?
  • What actual elements of an engagement platform as discussed by Robert and Alley are most important in your opinion?

Assessment 3: Project budget

Develop a Project Management Cost (Budget) and Project Management Schedule for Cosmos, Inc. or your selected business, using the Project Management Plan template.

Introduction

Estimating project budgets is far from an exact science. Many of us have heard of projects running over budget. Why is this? Why do we consistently forecast low? Reasons for this inconsistency include everything from improper funding at the beginning of the project to taking shortcuts that should never have been taken.

The project management schedule helps you and your project team evaluate progress and assess whether or not the project will be completed by the deadline. It is also a way to identify bottlenecks in the process so you can creatively reallocate resources and adjust timelines to ensure that the project remains on time and within budget.

Scenario

For this assessment, choose either Option A or Option B. You do not need to do both. Your instructor will grade both options using the same scoring guide.

Option A: Use Cosmos, Inc. to develop a Project Cost Budget and Project Management Schedule as the next components of your Project Management Plan. Refer to the Cosmo, Inc. Business Case document for more information.

Option B: Use a project from your selected business to develop a Project Cost Budget and Project Management Schedule as the next components of your Project Management Plan.

Your Role

As the project manager, you are responsible for forecasting, completing, and managing the project’s budget and schedule.

Requirements

For Options A and B, use the information from the prior assessment and your Work Breakdown Schedule to complete the Project Management Cost (Budget) component of the template:

  • Develop a project cost (budget) section. Prepare a cost estimate for the project by identifying the costs of each task and create categories to prioritize project expenditures. Prepare a preliminary budget using the cost estimate for your selected project.
    • Note: Copy and paste the Summary Table and Comments into the Project Management Cost (Budget) section of the template.
  • Develop project management schedule section. This should identify the time frames within which the costs will be incurred.
    • Note: Link your Microsoft Project timeline that meets project duration requirements.

Using your Work Breakdown Schedule and Microsoft Project, identify the activities you must perform to produce the project deliverables and include the following as part of the Project Management Schedule component of the template:

  • Summarize the intent of using a project schedule for the selected project.
  • Develop a Microsoft Project plan for your project schedule. Include an introduction and link into this section of your plan. Create a Gantt chart showing:
    • Resources assigned to each task. Note: Limit project tasks to 10 business days or less. Shorter task durations make it easier to assess project progress. Provide additional amplifying information about the schedule in your Project Plan, as applicable.
    • Predecessors to tasks.
    • Project tasks, milestones, and other measurable, tangible, and verifiable outcomes or results that must be produced to complete the project.

Deliverable Format

  • Attach your updated Project Management Plan Template.
  • Attach your MS Project File.
  • Attach your Project Budget File.
  • References: There is no set number of references required for this assessment. Use scholarly or academic sources where applicable.
  • Format:
    • Use the Project Management Cost (Budget) and Project Management Schedule components of the template provided.
    • The Project Cost (Budget) and Project Management Schedule are professional documents and should therefore follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document Guidelines, including single-spaced paragraphs.
    • Use APA style and format for references and in-text citations.
  • Length: Utilize the template, including the title page and reference page.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Analyze project management methodologies and frameworks.
    • Create categories to prioritize project expenditures.
    • Create timeline that meets project duration requirements.
  • Competency 3: Analyze the application of various project management frameworks.
    • Develop a project cost-budget section.
  • Competency 4: Analyze how leadership characteristics and behaviors affect project quality and success.
    • Develop a project schedule section.
  • Competency 5: Communicate project management needs, opportunities, and strategies with multiple stakeholders.
    • Communicate in a manner that is professional and consistent with expectations for members of the project management profession.

Your course instructor will provide feedback as if he or she were the recipient of your deliverables in the workplace, using the scoring guide and providing feedback. Refer to the Project Budget and Project Management Schedule scoring guide to ensure that you meet the grading criteria for this assessment before submission.

ePortfolio

This assessment demonstrates your competency in applying knowledge and skills required of a MBA learner in the workplace. Save this activity to your ePortfolio for future reference in the workplace.

research essay 2

The Research Proposal is a minimum 2-page (double-spaced) first draft. It must contain your thesis, a minimum of two (2) sources, and should contain many of the key points that will be used in your final essay. It should be a COMPLETE essay – not the first two pages of your final draft. In that sense, it should have a beginning — containing your thesis or topic of research — at least two points of research, and should have a solid conclusion.

DO NOT USE “WRITE SUBMISSION,” meaning do not write directly to Blackboard. If you do, your assignment will not be graded, and you will earn a zero. Your assignment MUST be uploaded as a Word document or PDF file. Please submit in MLA formatting, with a separate MLA 8th formatted Works Cited last page. (NOTE: the Works Cited page is NOT included in the essay’s minimum page count.)

This Research Essay should include the following elements:

  • Indicate a specific goal, career path or creative endeavor (eg. owning a restaurant, becoming an accountant, a career in law enforcement, becoming a musician, a dancer, sailing the Pacific, etc.).Then using either the career path or creative endeavor, introduce the main topic of your Research Essay though a THESIS STATEMENT (argument), and the motivation behind you’re wanting to achieve it.
  • GO DEEP into your topic through analysis backed up by research. Include specific passages or paraphrases from your sources to support a reasoned argument about your goal. Points of research should include the specific steps you’re taking to achieve your “American Dream.”  For example, if your American Dream involves becoming an accountant, then your research steps could include four-year colleges you’re considering after Mercer, graduate schools, internships, certifications and licenses, potential employers, cities to move to, professionals in the field to interview, etc.
  • Sourcing should be a mix of different media–online, library databases, in-person, print sources, etc., using primary sources with no more than one or two informational sites, if needed, to explain a complex profession.
  • The research needs to be practical, real-world sourcing with current (no more than two years old) information. Sourcing should show a practical pathway to attaining a goal. The steps to your goal are your sources, and those sources need to be realistic, recent, and attainable.
  • Tie all points together in a ‘conclusion’ statement that “proves” your goal is attainable.
  • Remember, this is an exploration on attaining your own personal “American Dream,” and should NOT be an extended definition of it.

Before you  start essay 2 List the CRAAP Test score for both news articles you’re comparing for Essay Two (just the TOTALS for each, not the catagory breakdown), then cite both articles according to MLA 8th formatting for Works Cited.

FOR Essay 2

FOCUS: Internet Searching, Peer-Reviewed Sources, Comparing Sources, Bias in Reporting, “Fake News.”

Twenty-five years ago, all one had to do to find out what was going on in the world, was to pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV for the evening news. Through career print reporters or network correspondents, consumers expected and arguably received reliably sourced and reported stories on current events. But today, with the explosion of news and social media sites on the internet, it’s becoming more and more difficult to discern what’s reliable and what been referred to as “fake news.” With the purported sum of human knowledge only a Google-click away, how can you tell what’s true or not when the “truth,” some people believe, can sometimes be as reliable as the weather?

For this essay, you will concentrating on Internet searching to see how various sites deal with the same issue, and how viewpoints can be skewed by opinion. Some news sites are considered “bias-neutral”, where other sites tend to lean toward a more progressive or conservative agenda. Your first step is to search for a current and POPULAR news story –one that’ll be covered by all the news sites–as a popular story will be widely reported and easier to find several different viewpoints. Your story should be no older than the date this essay was assigned.

STEP ONE – Search for a news story described above on one of these “bias-neutral” websites ONLY: CNN.com, ABCNews.com, BBCNews.com or NJ.com. You only need one article from ANY ONE of these sites. Try to go broad, as you’ll have a better chance of finding more coverage. DON’T choose stories from the Opinion or Editorial pages as these stories, by their very nature, are biased.

STEP TWO: Search for another news story covering the same issue on one of these sites ONLY: FOXNews.com, MSNBC.com, breitbart.com, Slate.com, huffingtonpost.com, wsj.com, or nytimes.com. Again, you only need one news story, but it’ll need to cover the new story as you’re covering in Step One. The same rule for Opinion pages above applies.

STEP THREE: Read both stories and compare and contrast, using the CRAAP test as a gauge, who makes the better argument and why, as who tells the story more fully and with less bias. Keep an eye out for any instances of so-called “fake news,” and if any viewpoint skews from one extreme to the other.

KEEP IN MINDYou don’t necessarily have to agree with what the writers are saying. You’re only going to determine who tells the story with less bias. The object is to persuade, whether what they write is convincing enough to change opinion, and score high enough on the CRAAP test to be reliable.

FOR YOUR THIRD SOURCE – In addition to your two news stories, pick one (1) of the three (3) fact-checking sites in the Lesson One Seven folder: Factcheck, FAIR, or The Checklist for Fake News. Use the criteria listed in one (or all) of the sites to analyze your news stories for accuracy and bias. Or use their search to look for your exact news story for analysis.

Essay will be a 5-7page (doubled space) argumentative essay that supports your position of which news coverage of the SAME news story tells that story more accurately, and with less bias. Essay must follow MLA 8th guidelines for formatting and citing, including an MLA 8th Works Cited on a separate last page. The essay must have THREE (3) sources, one from each news site you’re comparing, then a third from one (or all, if you want) of the three fact-check sites in this module (FAIR.org, FactCheck.org, or Checkology.org) using the fact-checking principles in these sites as a basis for your analysis.  You must refer to ALL three sources in your essay.

Group Project MKT

This is the most important time that you will be working on your project. If you let this slide, it will be difficult to catch up.

  1. Your team will scour the news and tap into personal experiences to relate your specific brand to all the concepts we have discussed so far/and are discussing currently in the class. You may want to ignore some introductory topics in Chapter 1 as they may be too generic to apply. And you will have to be choosy with the actual concepts that truly apply. Only some concepts/terms will apply and you will need to provide evidence from literature to support your claim.
  2. You will have to also have to tell me why the connections that you made are important to the study of Consumer Behavior. You can add advertisements (print or video) to illustrate these connections. It will augment your arguments.
  3. Your group should collaborate through Canvas or Google docs or some such sharing mechanism in order to keep a running tab of all contributions, connections, and observations.

April 1-15

Start writing your group report on all your observations. Your written report needs to be at least 15 pages long with the following sections.

  1. Brand and product category chosen and why that specific one (1 to 2 paras)
  2. History of the company and brand in particular (2 pages max)
  3. CB terms/concepts that relate to your brand and how and why (1 page for every concept with evidence, APA style in-text citations)
  4. Observations, conclusions (2 pages min, 4 pages max)
  5. Appendices (in addition to the 15 pages)
  6. References (in addition to the 15 pages)
  7. Double spaced (or at least 1.5)

Business Ethics, Government and Society EXAM #3

Questions:

  1. In your view, which of the following mechanisms is most effective in protecting consumers: the consumer movement, government regulation, the courts, or industry self-regulation? Explain your reasoning.
  2. Income inequality has grown in the United States since the 1980s. Do businesses contribute to this trend, and if so, how? What, if anything, can businesses do to reduce income inequality?
  3. What explains the gender and racial pay gap? What can be done about it?
  4. Consider the following statement: “Effective civic engagement makes firms more competitive.” Do you agree or disagree? Explain your position.
  5. What can a company do to build and maintain a good reputation?

I want you to first open a new text file using the word processing application of your choice. Write your name, course number, and section number at the top of the page. Next, copy and paste the five questions below into your document. Type your response to each question in complete sentences, using no more than 250 words per question.

Your score on each question will be determined primarily by two factors: (1) use of course material (i.e., incorporating ideas and concepts from course readings and lectures) and (2) evidence of critical thinking (e.g., showing an understanding of multiple sides of an issue). Prose should be clear and concise. Answers should be written in your own words. Plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated.
