Fallacies to Persuade and Possibly Manipulate

Advertisements exist to sell you a product. It might be soap, music, political positions, or ideas. Most advertisements use a variety of logical fallacies to persuade but some use them to subtlety or overtly manipulate the intended audience.

– Review the list of logical fallacies in your content and study the ads presented.

– Select at least two (2) ads that you feel represent two (2) different logical fallacies.

– Determine how the language and images of the ads appeal to the consumer; identify the kinds of fallacies being used;  and describe what needs or insecurities the ads are trying to reach.

– Explain the ads’ effectiveness.

Here is a list of fallacies

Ad hominem – attacking the person rather than the issue. Sometimes this is acceptable if the reason for attacking the individual is related to the issue.

All or nothing (black-and-white and either/or) – unfairly limiting reader to only two choices when there are most likely more options.

Appeal to authority – appealing to an authority is a fallacy if the authority is not an expert on the topic, cannot be trusted to tell the truth, or is misquoted.

Appeal to emotions – attempting to use emotions as key premises or tools to downplay relevant information.

Appeal to force (scare tactic) – threatening opponent rather than giving logical reason.

Appeal to ignorance – saying that something is false because it is not known to be true.

Bandwagon – saying that a claim is correct because it is what most everyone believes.

Begging the question – using circular reasoning to prove a conclusion that is included in the premise.

Circular reasoning – beginning an argument with what the reasoned is trying to prove.

Either/or – unfairly limiting reader to only two choices when there are most likely more options.

Exaggeration – overstating or overemphasizing a point.

Rationalizing – providing reasons that may not be our reasons for supporting our claim.

Red herring – like using a smelly fish to distract a bloodhound, using a digression to lead reader off track from relevant information.

Scapegoating – blaming an unpopular person or group for a problem.

Self-fulfilling prophecy – not recognizing that an act of prophesying will produce the effect that is predicted.

I need 2 response

3. Respond to two (2) posts by your classmates regarding their views on whether they believe public policy can be separated from politics or if they believe it is inherently political by definition. Your responses should be at least two paragraphs long. A paragraph consists of at least three sentences.

4. Your answer to the question should be no less than three paragraphs long.  A paragraph consists of at least three sentences.

first one

I believe step 1 of the policy process model, which is problem identification, is influenced the greatest by citizens. I think this because it says that the government must believe that there is an important policy challenge to be solved. This usually comes from interest groups, politicans and large number of the american public being concerned with a particular policy issue.

An example of this would be with the 2008 presidential campaign when Obama drew attention to the fact that a lot of americans lacked health care insurance. He made it his mission to make it a possibility for everyone in the United States to have access to affordable healthcare. Obama’s mission came to life in 2010 when the Affordable Care Act was implemented.

No, I do not think that public policy can be separated from politics because it involves many components with interconnected steps. Each of the steps affect all the others and how it influences the ultimate form and shape of the policies that are produced and not produced by the government. One example given in the textbook is with Medicare. Republicans say that the system is unsustainable due to the growing population of senior citizens, but Democrats say that with modest changes the system can be sustainable for a long period of time.

second

East of the six steps in the policy process model are important. In my opinion, the 1st step: Problem Identification is the step in the policy process model that is most influenced by citizens. This step includes input from the general public in reference to policies or problems that they feel need attention and / or government intervention to make changes. If we can’t identify the problem, no action can be taken for the betterment of all.

An example of this is childhood hunger. If we don’t first identify and admit that there is a problem, nothing will change and children will continue to struggle through each day in school; trying to learn and focus while their stomachs are empty. According to feedingamerica.orgthere are 13 million kids in the US facing hunger; 1 in 6 kids doesn’t know where their next meal will come from. It is never an easy task to look at any of the number of pockets that money being brought into the government comes from and to then allocate those funds. Texas Partnership for Out of School Time reports that Texas had the 8th highest rate of childhood food insecurity in 2014. It costs $3,500,000.00 annually for grade retention costs directly related to childhood hunger and other causes.  Whole many children receive free or reduced lunches during the school year and CCN reports that in July of 2015, that number was 21.7 million children. However, during the summer less than 4 million are fed are fed through summer food programs. Regardless of what year is represented, I feel it is safe to say that if just one child wakes up and wonders if they will get to eat that day; that is one child to many.

The Rivard Report as of February 13, 2017 states that 1 in 11 children in the United States calls Texas home. I believe that if we are able to figure out a way to focus on our children which ultimately are our future, we will all start to see a positive change and everyone’s future will be brighter. We have to care for our children if we expect them to care.

I worked for the Texas Department of Human Services from Feb 1998 to June of 2001 as a fraud investigator. I would receive cases from the social workers that somehow didn’t make sense and my job was to find out what the “real situation” was. There were very few cases that I investigated where all of the facts that were presented to the social worker were accurate. With this statement, I mean the person applying for benefits was straight-up lying. Now, there were some that didn’t report minor details and those details would not have made a difference in their case even if they had reported it. There was also a case that I worked that involved an elderly woman; 92 years old. On the day of her interview, it was Feb, extremely cold and raining. She walked to our office and arrived there at approximately 7:30am. One of the receptionists came to me around 4:30pm and asked if I would see her. I said, “Of course”. She was receiving survivor’s benefits from her deceased husband as her only income. Her 74-year-old disabled son lived with her and only received disability benefits. When we calculated her income versus her bills, she was allocated $10.00 for the month in food stamps. This hit me so hard that shortly after this interview, I left the Department of Human Services.

I tell the preceding story because I believe this is a problem that should be addressed. I do not believe that the public process model can be separated from politics. Somewhere along the line, we must require that our politicians recognize these issues. I know that I have a soft spot for the young and the elderly but, we must take care of them. They are our history and our future.

Poem

You will write a poem that both uses and deconstructs metaphor, paying attention to metonymic, disjunctive and other poetic effects.

We’ve seen how metaphor can be used powerfully; we’ve also seen how metaphor can become a cliché. For a poem, a metaphor is just another tool—hopefully used to create a surprising conjunction or impression. Sometimes metaphors are broken, extended or warped on purpose by a poet to create conjunctions that are more strange and fragmented.

After reading the poems attached in files (Must read all first!), take into account the many ways these poets use and break metaphor for their specific effects. We have had a lot of different examples of poetry so far, so there should be plenty of different examples and modes to give you inspiration. It should be clear, however, that what you are doing is somehow related to what you’ve read. Create a poem that has internal consistency and works as a complete piece unto itself. There is no page limit because if you pay attention to internal consistency, the poem should dictate its own shape. However, unless there is a good reason for it, for excessively short poem you most likely be asked to do more, if only to explore your poetic ideas further.

Final 1500 word essay

The texts for this part of the course have focused on how to “be” in the world either in relation to God/religion (including without God or religion). Within the context of this broad theme, write a literary analysis drawing from both The Plague and Life of Pi. You might consider the following questions, but your paper is not limited to these issues:

  • How should we be in the world in relation to or without God/religion when we face severe crises?
  • How should we be in the world in relation to or without God/religion when the “right” way to live or act seems complicated or unclear?
  • How should we be in the world in relation to or without God/religion when there is not an easy or obvious way to make sense of existence?

For this paper, please take the following points into consideration:

  1. You should have a clearly stated and compelling thesis
  2. Your thesis should not be a statement of the obvious – it needs to be a disputable argument that you are making, grounded in the texts
  3. ***Your thesis is not your opinion about the texts – it is an argument about what the tests are saying and, thus, must grounded in the texts***
  4. You should draw on the two texts with enough interpretation and/or evaluation (including the background to the texts and authors’ intent) to develop a comprehensive literary analysis
  5. Papers should demonstrate an understanding of the themes in the context of the works you select
  6. You need to identify at least two literary devices from each work that support your thesis
  7. You should have a well-organized argument with evidence drawn from the texts. Any references to the text must include page numbers. For example: (Martel, 23). You may refer to the text broadly, but you also must use specific quotes to support your argument.
  8. ***The paper should be typed, left-justified, double-spaced, and approximately 1500 words.***
  9. You must indicate word count at the bottom of the last page. Papers must uploaded in a .doc or .docx format.
  10. Papers with excessive spelling, grammatical, punctuation, and other writing errors will be graded accordingly.

SOCW 6311 wk 10 Discussion: Use of Group Designs in Program Evaluation

SOCW 6311 wk 10 Discussion:  Use of Group Designs in Program Evaluation

Group programs are common in social work. Just as with other types of programs, social workers must understand the options available to them and know how to select the appropriate research design.

For this Discussion, you evaluate group research design methods that can be used for an outcome evaluation of a foster parent training program. You also generate criteria to be measured in the program.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the “Social Work Research: Planning a Program Evaluation” case study in this week’s resources, Plummer, S.-B., Makris, S., & Brocksen S. (Eds.). (2014b). Social work case studies: Concentration year. Retrieved from http://www.vitalsource.com , and the section of “Basic Guide to Outcomes-Based Evaluation for Nonprofit Organizations with Very Limited Resources”, titled “Overview of Methods to Collect Information.”

Questions in bold then answers 300 to 500 words cite everything and full references

Post your explanation of which group research design and data collection method from those outlined in the Resources you selected as appropriate for the “Social Work Research: “Planning a Program Evaluation” case study and why.

Then, generate criteria to be measured using the research design by identifying a specific outcome and a method for measuring that outcome.

Specify who will collect the data and how the data will be collected.

Week 3 Discussion – BUS3055

Week 3 DiscussionDiscussion Topic Task: Reply to this topic Due June 18 at 12:59 AM

Negotiable Instruments

Before beginning work on this week’s discussion forum, please review the link “Doing Discussion Questions Right,” the expanded grading rubric for the forum and any specific instructions for this week’s topic.

The discussion assignment consists of two parts. Select one of the questions for Part 1 and answer Part 2.
By the due date assigned, submit your answers to Part 1 and Part 2 to this Discussion Area. Post the answers to both parts in one thread. Label your answers Part 1 and Part 2, but do not repeat the scenario text in your responses. Start reviewing and responding to your classmates as early in the week as possible. You should review and critique the work of other students as outlined in the expanded rubric by the end of the week.
Discussion Question Part 1
Select one of the scenarios listed below and explain the best solution for each. Include comments related to any ethical issues that arise. You should locate at least one scholarly source from the SUO Library or one case that has been decided or is currently pending to support your answer.

Scenario 1 – Liability on Negotiable Instruments
Porter Cable hired a bookkeeper, Gerald Smith, and gave him general authority to issue company checks drawn on First Bank so Smith could pay employees’ wages and other company bills. Smith decided to cheat his employers out of $9,500 by issuing a check payable to Timkin Bearings, one of the suppliers of bearings. Smith does not intend for Timkin to receive any of the money, nor is Timkin entitled to the payment. Smith endorses the check in Timkin’s name and deposits the check in an account that he opened in Sunny Bank in the name “Timkin Bearing Co.   Sunny Bank accepts the check and collects payment from the drawee bank, First Bank.   First Bank charges Porter Cable’s account $9,500.  Smith transfers $9,500 out of the Timkin account and closes it. Porter Cable discovers the fraud and demands that their account be re-credited.

  • Evaluate the arguments for Porter Cable and the banks.
  • Determine which party should win and support your answer.
  • Provide arguments for each party.  Determine which party will win.  Provide support for the arguments and the final answer with cases or scholarly articles from the South University Online Library.

  • Scenario 2 – Negotiable Instruments
Ginny DeWitt borrowed $30,000 from SunTrust Bank to pay for her first year of college and signed a promissory note that required payments to start six months after graduation or the student fails to enroll in at least one-half of the full time load.   Ginny dropped out of college to pursue her passion of opening a gift shop.   When Ginny failed to pay the debt, SunTrust transferred the note to First Bank in New York.  New York Bank obtained a  court order allowing it to garnish Ginny’s wages and her federal income tax refund.  Ginny filed a lawsuit seeing to avoid the payment, claiming the debt was not valid because she did not sign any documentation promising to pay First Bank. She also argued that the note lacked consideration.
  1. Explain the holder or holder in due course status of SunTrust when the bank took the note from Ginny and then First Bank when it took the note from SunTrust.
  2. Address GInny’s arguments concerning the validity of the debt.
  3. Determine the outcome of the case and provide support for your answer.
  4. Scenario 3 – Holder in Due Course
John Haley hired Mary Black as a bookkeeper at Florida Dental Center, Inc.  Haley fired Black when he learned that she embezzled more than $200,000 and did not pay over $150,000 in state and federal taxes owed by the business. Haley said that if Black did not repay the embezzled funds, he would notify law enforcement. Black started working as a bookkeeper for Senior Daycare, a business owned by her father. Without proper authorization, Black wrote a check to Florida Dental for $175,000 out of Senior Daycare’s account and deposited the check directly into Florida Dental’s checking account. Black told Haley that the funds were a loan from her family so she could repay Florida Dental. Haley used the funds to pay the back taxes owed. Two years later, Black’s father discovered her theft and sued both Haley and Florida Dental for conversion because Black did not have authority to take the funds.
  • Evaluate Florida Dental’s status as a holder in due course (HDC) of the funds Mary repaid.
  • Since Haley knew that Black previously embezzled funds from Florida Dental when she was an employee, should Haley have been suspicious about the source of the funds that Black used to repay the debt? Could this knowledge impact the court’s decision?
  • Provide support for your answers.

Discussion Question Part II
Using the business you created in Week 1, select three topics from the list below  and explain how your business will handle issues related to the topics. Justify your answers with relevant laws, cases, or examples.

  • Acceptance of checks
  • Prevention of forgery (internal employees)
  • Dishonored (returned checks)
  • Acceptance of payment by electronic means, such as PayPal
  • Alternative payments such as Bitcoin, BPAY
  • Gift cards
  • Issuing credit to customers

Assessment 2: Analytic Technicques

Download data on a company’s stock history. From this data, create scatterplots, histograms, and calculate the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation of some data points. Write a 3-5-page report including the graphs and descriptive statistics you have created.

Business analytics techniques are used to facilitate decision making by transforming large amounts of raw data into meaningful information. Many businesses rely on analysis of relevant historical data to make key strategic and operational decisions. Therefore, understanding how to use techniques such as graphical representation and descriptive statistics to translate raw data into useful information can be a valuable skill in an organization.

In this assessment and the next, you will have the opportunity to sharpen your analytics skills by locating and interpreting real-life stock data.

You have been learning about how to explore data. In this assessment, you will apply those skills by downloading a practical dataset and creating graphical representations of that data. The work you do in this assessment will lay the foundation for future assessments in which you analyze and interpret those graphical representations. Since the purpose of business analytics is to make sense of large quantities of raw data, this assessment helps you develop skills in applying analytics to business contexts by practicing the exploration and display of data.

In addition to graphical and tabular summary methods, numeric or quantitative variables and data can be summarized numerically using various techniques of description and display.

Descriptive methods, which describe existing data, are also methods for using a subset of the available data to estimate or test a theory about a measurement on a larger group. This larger group is called the population, and the measurement being studied is the parameter. The smaller group, or subset, of the population that is taken in order to make an inference (to make an estimate or test a theory) is referred to as the sample. The measurement taken on that sample is then referred to as the statistic, which is usually the best single-number estimate for the population parameter of interest. Most often, however, the estimate should not be restricted to a single number that would be exactly correct or incorrect. Instead, it is preferable to calculate some range of possible values between which there can be a certain percent confidence that the true population parameter falls. These are referred to as confidence intervals.

You are an analyst in a publicly traded company. Your supervisor has asked you to create graphical representations from raw stock data for a company-wide meeting at the end of the quarter.

Your Role

Your task is to analyze the stock history of the company and create a scatterplot and a histogram. Then you will calculate mean, median, mode, and standard deviation of the adjusted daily closing stock price and the stock volume.

It is your responsibility to turn that data into meaningful information using descriptive statistics.

Instructions

  • Select a business of which you are a part or in which you have interest and download the raw data on the company’s stock history. Any business that has practical meaning for you is appropriate for this assessment.
  • Follow these steps to locate and download stock history from Yahoo! Finance:
    1. Go to Yahoo Finance.
    2. Search for and find the stock of the company you have chosen.
    3. Click on the “Historical Data” tab. Then select the following settings above the table:
      • Select Time Period of one year.
      • Select “Historical Prices.”
      • Select Frequency as “Daily.”
    4. Click Apply.
    5. Click on “Download Data.” Go to the bottom of your screen or your Downloads folder to open the Excel file you just downloaded. Open the Excel file. Check to be sure that you have enough lines to show the whole year. If not, reset the settings at the top of the Historical Data chart and try again.
    6. Once you are sure that you have a year’s worth of data, save the Excel file.
  • Using the Excel file with the year’s stock data, conduct descriptive analysis as follows:
    1. Create a scatterplot of the highest stock price (in the column labeled “High”) against time. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you created this graph.
    2. Create a scatterplot of the lowest stock price (in the column labeled “Low”) against time. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you created this graph.
    3. Create a histogram of the adjusted daily closing stock price (in the column labeled “Adj Close”). Make sure the histogram is meaningful by adjusting the bin size so you can see the shape of the histogram. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you created this graph.
    4. Create a histogram of the stock trading volume (in the column labeled “Volume”). Make sure the histogram is meaningful by adjusting the bin size so you can see the shape of the histogram. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you created this graph.
    5. Calculate the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation of the adjusted daily closing stock price. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you calculated these statistics.
    6. Calculate the mean, median, mode, and standard deviation of the stock volume. Write a sentence explaining the process by which you calculated these statistics.
  • Prepare a report that you would present to your supervisor, including the following:
    • An APA-formatted title page.
    • A one-page introduction of your chosen company, including the company background and practical business context.
    • A section headed Graphical Representations of Data, in which you include the four graphs you created above and a summary of the processes by which you created each graph.
    • A section headed Descriptive Statistics, in which you include the statistics you calculated above and and a summary of the procedures you followed to calculate the statistics.
    • APA-formatted in-text citations and a corresponding references page. Remember to cite the source of your financial data.

Walkthrough: You may view the following media piece to help you understand concepts addressed in this assessment:

Additional Requirements

  • Length: 3–5 pages, double-spaced. Include a title page and the graphical representations of the data selected.
  • Written communication: free of errors that detract from the overall message.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 2: Use analytic and statistical techniques to make meaning of large quantities of data.
    • Create four different graphical representations of data.
    • Calculate descriptive statistics for two different variables.
    • Summarize the processes by which each graph and statistics were created and calculated.
  • Competency 4: Present the results of data analysis in clear and meaningful ways to multiple stakeholders.
    • Introduce the company and practical business context.
    • Correctly format citations and references using current APA style.
    • Write content clearly and logically with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.

Note: Faculty may use the Writing Feedback Tool when grading this assessment. The Writing Feedback Tool is designed to provide you with guidance and resources to develop your writing based on five core skills. You will find writing feedback in the Scoring Guide for the assessment, once your work has been evaluated.

Urgant

Competency
Develop examples of ethical and privacy concerns associated with data supporting business intelligence efforts.
Instructions
You work for a tourism board at a top destination within the United States that among other tasks, sends information out to potential visitors, performs direct mailing campaigns, solicits newsletter sign ups, and helps drive economic growth by attracting visitors to the destination. The direct mailing team for your organization accomplishes this through email blasts, mailing flyers, and texting campaigns. The address list the organization has in place is seen as a strategic advantage, as it has extensive information about potential and repeat visitors, and has been compiled from various sources over the years.
The organization has recently developed a mobile application and hopes to leverage mobile devices and tablets to help make obtaining information easier for the visitors, as well as collecting more information on patterns of consumer behavior. Since the mobile application will have access to a great deal of personal information belonging to the users (email address, GPS data, phone number, etc.), it has been suggested this information be automatically uploaded to the direct mailing database, and signing them up for various promotional efforts and communications. It had also been suggested there may be an opportunity for the marketing department to partner with the local theme parks and attractions within the area, sharing the databases from each to form one large database to reach more users.
The idea has been presented to the organization’s legal counsel for review, as the IT team is fairly certain the end user agreement for the mobile application states the collected information can be reused and sold as needed. The public relations team has taken a different position and feels there is potential for backlash in social media as well as other public outcries should the data be sold to or shared with other organizations, and questions whether the data should even be stored since there are additional pieces of data being collected that have no purposeful use for the tourism board. They have asked for your input on the matter.
The questions they are presenting you with include:
What are the general practices surrounding data collection?
How can privacy violations occur?
Are there any risks, issues, or problems associated with collecting and storing data that isn’t needed now, in the event it may be needed in the future? What information do other organizations collect?
The end user agreement says we CAN collect, reuse, and sell data as needed, but does that mean we should? Is there a level of ethical data collection and storage that we should be considering?
The task:
Record a presentation using the screen sharing Webware/software of your choice (an Internet search will reveal many free options). Your presentation can be recorded with your own voiceover and visuals, just as you would if you were giving the presentation live.
In addition to the presentation, prepare a memo to the head of the public relations department outlining any possible risks associated with collecting and using the data in the manner described. Your report should include general practices around data collection that are relevant to business operations (i.e., data that is needed vs. not), as well as specific examples how possible privacy violations may be incurred.

  Grit

A time when I have experienced a challenge and overcame is when I was trying to graduate high school. I had basically no motivation to do so and I was going through a lot at the moment as well and that made everything be so difficult, but I eventually did. I was failing a few of my classes and that was putting a lot of stress on me causing me to procrastinate on improving my grades. I tend to procrastinate a lot when I am a bit stressed and that is why I struggled so much to graduate. I eventually ended up finishing my classes before a lot of people and graduated in time. I felt very relieved when I graduated. I also learned that I really could get through anything life throws at me even if I am not in the right mindset.

The strategies that I personally liked the most were the one saying to know your priorities, communicate with others about your obligations and multitask. I like to keep in mind my priorities because if I do not, I usually end up not having enough time to do the things I need to do rather than the things I want to do. I have always had a problem with that so making a list of what my priorities are will be helpful. I also like communicating with others either at work at home or with friends about my obligations I usually use this strategy the most because if I have something to do that has with school and it is overlapping with work, I will usually just let my boss know that way I do not have any problems with that. I also let my friends know I cannot go out with them if I have schoolwork. I also like to multitask if I am at work and I am on my lunch or a break. Multitasking will help me catch up with whatever I have due, and it will also help me use up my time wisely.

What resonated with me the most is what Amelia Manning stated about her basically liking proving people wrong. When she says that she did the things that others told her she could not do, I related with that. I have always been the person that would love proving people wrong but only when it had to do with me personally. I once stayed at a job I did not like very much for a long time because one of my coworkers insultingly said I would not last in front of me and some ex-coworkers. I worked extremely hard to prove him wrong and was exceptionally good at it too. The point is, if someone tells me I cannot do something, I will basically make it my goal to prove them wrong. I will continue working full time and studying for school to get the career I have been dreaming of since a child and I will prove to them that I can do that and much more.
