A letter to an officail

For this assignment, write a letter to someone related to the local issue you highlighted in the week 8 forum. This issue must be relevant to this course’s topics.

Please do not just copy your discussion answers. Your letter needs to be more developed – including your problem’s explanation and proposed solutions. Please spend as much time as possible researching both the problem’s explanation and solution. You don’t need to provide your return address for the assignment, but you’ll need to include it if you decide to send your letter. Provide the name and mailing address of one person you could contact regarding the local issue at the top of your submission. Then write a three-paragraph letter using this format:

Paragraph 1: introduce yourself and explain the problem;

Paragraph 2: explain the relevant history of the problem (cite your sources);

Paragraph 3: explain concepts and theories (think of IR theories if applicable) related to the problem (cite your sources and relate to course materials if possible); and,

Paragraph 4: propose possible solutions and explain what you want this person to do.

Your letter should have a professional tone and look and follow the standard letter format. Add legitimacy to your claims by providing citations using the Turabian style and include a list of your references (required). Use 12 pitch, Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins. Include your last name in your file name and upload your work in a .doc or .docx file by Sunday of week 8. lastnamefirstnamefinalclasssectionumber example: GonzalesJose final IRLS21001 A template is attached for your convenience.

It is up to you whether or not you send the letter, but you are encouraged to do so. Civic engagement is crucial in democratic societies.

Philosophy 15

Answer of the following questions in 100 words based on the attach document.

Albert Camus, ‘The Myth of Sisyphus,’ (1942)

1. Why does Camus describe Sisyphus in the classical myth, as an “absurd hero” (2)? Why is Sisyphus’ situation absurd for Camus? And why is he a “hero”?

(Answer the question in your own words. Also find examples in the text).

2.  In Camus’ retelling of the myth, as Sisyphus goes back down the mountain following his ascension with the rock, Camus writes:

“It is during that return, that pause, that Sisyphus interests me” (2).

Why is Camus the most interested in this period in the myth when Sisyphus descends the mountain? Why is this moment the most important for Camus, and for his ethical theory?

(Find examples in the text to support your answers). (2-3).

3. At the end of the reading, why does Camus write that:

“One must imagine Sisyphus happy” (4).

What is Camus’ main point by concluding his essay this way?

4. Finally, how do you interpret Camus’ essay in relation to the world today? Are there any parallels to our contemporary society? Also, what lessons might his ideas provide in relation to our own lives?

Think about the question critically and thoughtfully, and answer in your own words.

Expectations in Context

1: Expectations in Context

Contains unread posts

The article “Young Writer With a Following Admits Fabricating Dylan Quotes in Book” describes the situation of Jonah Lehrer, a writer who violated expectations regarding the integrity of his work.

Expectations for writers can vary from one context to another. In WRTG 112, we have been studying how to use sources in a research paper. In this discussion, we will explore how the expectations for college research writing are similar and/or different from expectations in other writing contexts.

Initial post (by Friday):

Respond to the following in 1-2 paragraphs.

  1. Summarize the expectations for use of sources in a college research paper, as you understand them.
  2. In what ways are these expectations similar to or different from expectations you have observed in other contexts, such as workplace, personal, or journalistic writing? You might use observations from your reading about Jonah Lehrer in addition to personal experience in your response.

Guided response (by Sunday):

Respond to at least one of your classmates. Are there areas in which your understanding differs from theirs? What can you add to their observations?

  2. Identify the antecedent of each pronoun in your paragraph. The antecedent is the noun to which the pronoun refers.
  3. If you found any of the three types of pronoun problems—unclear pronoun reference, vague subject pronoun, or agreement error—in your paragraph, identify the problem and revise the problematic sentence.

Guided response (by Sunday):

In response to one of your peers:

Compare and Contrast Rough Draft

Purpose

The grade you receive for the rough draft is a small portion of your overall class grade, and you will not be graded on the quality of your writing. Your grade will be based only on whether you meet the minimum requirements specified on the grading rubric below.

The purpose of the rough draft, then, is to give you a chance to get your thoughts on paper so I can offer comments. One of your classmates will also review your rough draft. Then you will be prepared to revise the draft into your best possible final paper.

Instructions

Complete the rough draft as a Word document and submit it to Canvas by the due date.

You are required to include 2-4 in-text citations of outside sources. At the end of the draft, include the correct website URLs that link to each of the in-text citations. If you already know how to format a reference page, according to any citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) then feel free to do so.  If you don’t know how to format a reference page that’s okay—just give me the website URLs.

As you write the rough draft, it is preferable (but not required) that you use both the new elements introduced in Lessons 4-6 as well as the older elements introduced in Lessons 1-3. Doing so will give me a chance to comment on your technique. If you give me more to comment on, you will get more guidance for the final paper.

Viewing my comments

When I return your draft with my comments, I highly recommend viewing the comments on a full-size screen, not on a phone or a tablet. Some of my comments will be in the right margin, and these may or may not be visible on a phone or tablet. If you view them on a laptop or desktop computer, you will be sure to see everything.

Elements to consider: Lessons 1-3

Paragraphs: Write paragraphs which are unified by a main idea. See the page entitled Developing Paragraphs – Main Ideas, Unity, and Topic Sentences from Lesson 3.

Introduction: Introductions should be 1-2 paragraphs long, should catch the reader’s attention, and let the reader know the purpose of the essay. Do not refer to the process of writing the essay itself. See the page entitled Writing Introductions from Lesson 3.

Rhetorical techniques: Consider incorporating any rhetorical techniques you used in the Extended Definition Paper to help you to express yourself and make your meaning clear. You may find that illustration and analogy are particularly useful when comparing and contrasting. See the page entitled Techniques to Develop the Rough Draft from Lesson 2.  You are NOT required to use any particular rhetorical techniques in the rough draft nor in the final paper.

Conclusion:  It is fine to summarize in the conclusion, but the conclusion should also go beyond just a summary of main points. See the page entitled Writing Conclusions from Lesson 3.

Elements to consider: Lessons 4-6

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to compare the similarities between two subjects and to contrast the differences between the same two subjects. See the page entitled The Compare & Contrast Paper from Lesson 4.

Insights: When you choose points to compare or contrast—go beyond the obvious. Offer the reader your insights. See the page entitled Going Beyond the Obvious from Lesson 4.

Thesis: Develop a thesis statement which will control the direction of your essay. Required in the rough draft:  Underline the thesis statement.  See the page entitled Writing a Thesis Statement from Lesson 5.

Organization: Use block organization, point organization, or a combination of both to structure your essay. Use an outline to help you visualize the structure of your essay. See the pages entitled Essay Organization: Block Organization and Essay Organization: Point Organization from Lesson 6.

APA in-text citations: Use APA in-text citations to indicate information in your essay that comes from an outside source. Also, at the end of your essay, include the website URL for each article you cite in-text See the page entitled APA In-text Citations—Show Who is “Talking” from Lesson 6.

Formatting Guidelines

The formatting guidelines specify how your paper should look. I will not deduct points from the rough draft for formatting errors. However, it is preferable to follow the formatting guidelines, anyway, so that I can point out any errors and you can correct them for the final paper.

The formatting guidelines for the Compare & Contrast Paper are the same as for the Extended Definition Paper.

  • Margins — All four margins should be set at 1 inch (2.54 cm).
  • Font — Use Times New Roman, 12-point font.
  • Line spacing — Use double spacing throughout the paper. Do not add extra space between paragraphs.
  • Indentation — Indent the first line of each paragraph about 5 spaces.

Grading rubric

Your grade for the rough draft will be based ONLY on the following rubric.

ELEMENTEXPLANATIONVALUEName & assignmentThe student’s full name and the assignment should appear at the top of the first page. This assignment is called “Rough Draft of the Compare & Contrast Paper.”Worth 3%.Due dateThe draft must be submitted by the due date.See the syllabus for the late submission policy.Word countThe draft must be between 400 and 800 words long, not counting the heading or reference page.

Points are deducted as a percentage under the minimum word count. For example, if a rough draft is turned in with only 300 words, that is 25% under the minimum, so 25% would be deducted from the grade.

No points will be deducted for exceeding the maximum word count.

Purpose of the assignmentThe draft must compare and contrast two subjects. If a reasonable attempt is made to compare and contrast two subjects, then no points will be deducted.APA citation

Include information from 2-4 outside sources. Cite each source in-text. At the end of the paper, add the website URLs that link to each article. No more than 20% of the information and ideas in the paper may come from outside sources.

If you use a direct quotation, the copy/pasted text must be enclosed in quotation marks and then given an in-text citation.  See the page APA in-text citations – Show Who’s “Talking”

At least two different sources are required.

If only one source is cited in-text, 10% will be deducted from the grade.

If no sources are cited, 15% will be deducted from the grade.

10% will be deducted for each missing website URL.

10% will be deducted for each direct quotation missing quotation marks.

No points will be deducted for citation formatting errors. Any reasonable effort to cite the sources will be given full credit.

Points will not be deducted for unintentional plagiarism. See the syllabus for the policy on intentional plagiarism. Some points will be deducted from papers which exceed the maximum use of outside sources.

DAta

Once a research focus is selected, the vision and target have been clarified, and research questions have been developed, a researcher begins to plan data collection based upon the research questions. Data collection takes on different formats, such as observation, surveys, samples, documents, multimedia materials, assessments, and interviews. This is the fourth step of the action research process. Data provides the researcher with the ability to investigate authentic behaviors, responses, and work samples in an attempt to respond to the research questions.

Select at least one of the options listed (i.e. observation, surveys, samples, documents, multimedia materials, assessments, and/or interviews) to collect data based on the vision, target, and research questions developed in Topics 1 and 2. Use a graphic organizer to display the data collected that aligns to the research questions created in Topic 2.

Explain the data collection process and the research considerations for your action research study.  the Process is interviews

  • Describe the data collection plan and the rationale for your selected data collection method.

Plan is to reach out to a teacher sped parent, and a student who needs sped services not receiving.

Support your data collection plan with 3-5 scholarly resources.

History of Criminal Law and Punishment

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Pioneers in Criminology: The Historical Development of Criminology (Links to an external site.) and Evolution of Punishment (Links to an external site.). Additionally, watch 002 History of US Law and What Is the Law? (Links to an external site.)

Western societies have been punishing criminal actors since ancient Greece. This begs the question of whether or not punishment is an effective means of crime control and recidivist reduction. As you explore the balance of freedom versus security and the history of criminal punishment, be willing to think of new ways to address and deter criminal behavior.

Explain the history of punishment and its goals. Your response must detail the origins of punishment, how notions of what is “appropriate” punishment is for a given circumstance over time, and an analysis of the effectiveness of modern punishment methods and schemes. Offer one or two suggestions for improvement to methods of punishment currently in use.
