Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs)

In a virtual world (VW) of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), collaboration and communication are provided through the Internet between MMORPG-ready devices such as the Microsoft Xbox, and Sony PlayStation, and by using the Web browser. Gamers around the world can play against other gamers without seeing their opponent face-to-face. The Internet and MMORPG devices have become a social phenomenon. For example, a mobile game called “Game of War” enables players to play against each other anywhere around the world. Other diversions include Second Life, which isn’t really a game at all, but rather just that, another life people can live online through their online persona.

Before you begin this assignment, engage in an online game or experience such as Game of War, Second Life, or Words With Friends, which has a phone app you can download free or play from your computer on the Internet or even as a Facebook app. It can be any game where you are playing against a live person over the Web. If you have difficulty finding an online multiplayer game, reach out to your instructor for guidance.

Write a paper with screenshots from your experience in which you complete the items below. Be sure to include what your choice was in the introduction paragraph. Although there is not a specific page length, you should fully explore and answer the questions asked. Typically you will have two or three paragraphs with your main point supported by a few sentences of fact for each. The goal is to convince the reader that you have done your assigned reading and the additional research being asked. 100 percent original work is required.

  1. Describe cognitive social phenomena that occur specifically to the context of the MMORPG that wouldn’t happen in a      face-to-face checkers game.
  2. Compare and contrast the MMORPG user interaction environment to the face-to-face environment where a board game like      Scrabble is being played.
  3. Assess whether or not the environment has an impact on the player’s ability to play a game such as Words With Friends in this environment.
  4. Outline and describe the user interface requirements that a game designer needs to include in order to engage players in an      MMORPG environment.
  5. Use at least three quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not  qualify as quality resources.

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Examine the difference in cognitive social phenomena      between face-to-face and MMORPG interactions.

· By submitting this paper, you agree: (1) that you are submitting your paper to be used and stored as part of the SafeAssign™ services in accordance with the Blackboard Privacy Policy; (2) that your institution may use your paper in accordance with your institution’s policies; and (3) that your use of SafeAssign will be without recourse against Blackboard Inc. and its affiliates.

Informal Fallacies

Due: Sunday night at 11:59pm Mountain Time

In this assignment, you will identify argument and fallacy forms.

Step 1: Consider the scenario:

Scientists from the Coalition of Concerned Scientists claim that fresh water is going to be the scarcest resource on the planet in 50 years. This claim, though alarming, is based only on a single study performed in the Appalachian Mountains over a span of 10 years. The study involved testing the percentage and availability of fresh, drinkable water along the mountain range once every April for 10 years. The study has many citizens concerned this could mark the beginning of a slippery slope, and many are beginning to think irrationally about how to maintain an abundance of clean water. As a well-respected environmental blogger, many have come to you looking for answers, and while you may not have the solutions they want, you do believe you can prove that the Coalition of Concerned Scientists study is riddled with fallacies.

Step 2: Examine the presence of fallacy.

Create content for a two to three-page (minimum) blog entry aimed at easing the anxiety of your readership, address the following statements:

  • What type of argument is being presented? How does that differ or coincide with the fallacy form?
  • What fallacy or fallacies are present in the Coalition of Concerned Scientists’ claim? What are the ramifications of the fallacy or fallacies within this scenario?
  • By what criteria can you distinguish between arguments and fallacies? In the case of the Coalition of Concerned Scientists study, what improvements would transform this into a viable argument?
  • Are there any logical fallacies present in the scenario? If so, explain. How can you discern logical fallacies within an argument?

Step 3: When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place.

Cite any sources in APA format.

Forensic Biology in Crime Scene Investigations

Listed below are the details outlining a crime scene that occurred over a period of time. You are to investigate and evaluate the crime and be prepared to present your information in a court in the form of a written document. You will have to use entomology, odontology, anthropology, pathology, and microbiology techniques to complete your investigation.

Carl and Joseph were in the woods of Georgia in early fall. They had set up a camp because they were both deer hunters. In the fall of years when the weather is cooler, deer are very prevalent. On this cool November morning, the men were walking through the woods in their quest for deer. On the second day of being in the woods, walking through what was really thick brush and uneven terrain, one of the men slipped and fell into what appeared to be a covering of a hole in the ground. As he began to try and pull himself out, he saw several skulls and bones lying around. He immediately screamed for his friend, who assisted him in getting out of the hole. Together, they looked in and saw skeletons and what appeared to be a decomposing body.

The two men called the local police. The police arrived, secured the area, and called for the forensic team to come and investigate. You are the forensic person that has been asked to identify the 5 skeletons in the grave and the body that was only partially decomposed.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in 10–12 pages:
    • Why will this particular case require the use of forensic biology? Explain in detail.
    • When you arrive on the scene, what is your first course of action? Describe your process, and be specific.
      • How will you avoid contamination at this stage of the investigation? Explain.
      • How will you control the other first responders or law enforcement officers? What challenges do they pose to a forensic investigator? Explain.
    • What will you do to identify the remains at this crime scene? Explain.
      • What is the documentation process for collecting and preserving this type of evidence? Explain.
    • How will you transport your evidence to the lab safely? Explain.
    • Once you arrive back at the lab, what significant risks of contamination exist? Explain.
      • How will you avoid this contamination? Explain.
    • What is the process for DNA analysis on the decomposing body?
      • What specific tests will you use? Explain.
      • How will serology play a role in the selected testing processes? Explain.
        • Using this decomposing body as an example, what is the process that you will follow to properly conduct this DNA test?
      • What challenges or barriers exist when you begin to interpret the results of your DNA test? Explain in detail.
    • How large of a role will facial reconstruction play in this investigation? Explain.
    • Next, provide 2 scenarios of court case outcomes regarding this investigation.
      • One scenario must result in the successful identification and conviction of the perpetrator. You will need to fill in the blanks with regard to physical evidence and other necessary details.
      • The other scenario must result in a wrongful conviction. You will need to identify the elements that lead to this wrongful conviction.

Supreme Court Opinion

Supreme Court Opinion

[WLO: 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Prior to beginning your written assignment, read the Excessive Bail (Links to an external site.) article and review all previous weeks’ materials concerning the 4th Amendment, due process, the right to remain silent, the right to counsel, cruel and unusual punishment and capital punishment.

In the state of Denial, the Capital City Police have been watching gang activity between two local gangs, the Drips and the Scruds. The Scruds are mad at the Drips because they believe that the Drips have been encroaching on the Scruds’ territory and selling drugs in the Scruds’ neighborhood. Members of the gangs take the first letter of the gang’s affiliation for their “gang name.” For example, the leader of the Drips is assumed the name Dripster, while the leader of the Scrips took on the name Stupido. Officers Do-Right and Justice have been assigned to the case and have been following members of both gangs closely over the past several weeks.

Dripster (the leader of the Drips) has been driving around in a Black Chevrolet Blazer that is registered to his girlfriend. Do-Right and Justice have placed a tracking device on the vehicle so that they can follow the gang leader at a safe distance without him noticing them. Using the tracking device, they have followed him to a party being held at a house owned by the girlfriend of a fellow Drip, Dufus.

The officers decide to use a new device that they have obtained from the police department called the Bloodhound, which can sniff out certain smells from a distance. Using the Bloodhound, the officers have determined that inside the house are the following substances: marijuana, creatine (which is commonly used to cut cocaine), and lye (which can be used in making methamphetamine). Based upon the information they have obtained from the Bloodhound, they call a magistrate and obtain a search warrant for Dufus’ house.

After backup arrives, Officers Do-Right and Justice lead the way to the house, where they break through the front door of the house without first knocking and announcing their presence. Inside the house, they find Dripster sitting at the kitchen table in front of a scale and a white powdery substance, which is later determined to be to be cocaine. They also find Dufus in a back room surrounded by boxes of electronics and a pile of cash that they later determine to be $50,000. With Dufus are two low-level Drips, Dummy and Duncecap, who are armed with automatic assault rifles and loaded handguns.

When the officers rush into the room where Dufus, Dummy, and Duncecap are, Duncecap immediately throws up his hands and tells the officers, “I’ll tell you everything I know! Just don’t arrest me!” Dufus turns to his accomplices and says, “If either of you says a word, you are dead meat.” Duncecap immediately stops talking and claims he “doesn’t know anything about anything.”

As Do-Right is escorting Dripster to his cruiser after he has arrested him, a carload of Scruds drives by slowly. The Scruds’ leader, Stupido, leans out of his window and yells to Dripster, “I told you to keep your business off our turf!” Dripster, thinking Stupido is the reason that the cops raided the house, grabs Do-Right’s gun and opens fire towards Stupido’s car. Dripster misses Stupido and his car, but he shoots and injures a 12-year-old girl, Innocent, who is watching the arrests in her front yard across the street. Innocent survives but is paralyzed. At the same time, Stupido, realizing that Dripster is shooting at him, grabs his own weapon from the car and shoots at his arch-enemy but misses him.

Officers are able to safely transport Dripster, Dufus, Dummy, and Duncecap to the police station and have also arrested Stupido. They search Stupido’s car at the scene and find the gun he used to shoot at Dripster. Ballistics shows that the gun was used in a previous armed robbery of a party store. Stupido is charged with the robbery.

At the police station, Officer Justice, who is questioning Dummy without first reading Miranda warnings, tells Dummy that if he tells him everything he knows about the rivalry between the Drips and the Scruds and agrees to testify against the members of both gangs, the police will charge him with only possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. Dummy takes the deal.

Stupido was interrogated at the police station regarding the armed robbery and told that he had been named as the robber by an eyewitness. He asked for his lawyer three times, but his lawyer, who arrived at the police station while Stupido was being interrogated, was twice denied entry to the interrogation. After three hours of interrogation, Stupido confesses to the armed robbery.

Dripster is convicted of attempted murder of Innocent and sentenced to death. He is also convicted of possession with intent to sell marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine. He is additionally convicted of possession of stolen property (the electronics) and unregistered firearms. Stupido is convicted of the armed robbery and attempting to murder Dripster. Dufus and Duncecap are also convicted of possession with intent to sell marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine; possession of stolen property (the electronics); and for unregistered firearms. Dummy is convicted of misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

The cases are all combined as People v. Dripster, Dummy & Stupido , et al. The following points have been appealed to the Supreme Court of the United States. You are an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and this case has come before the Court. The Chief Justice has assigned you to write a majority opinion resolving the case. In your paper,

  • Write an opinion (an analysis of the questions below that will serve as the reasoning and the ruling of the Supreme Court) that resolves the case based upon previous cases from the United States Supreme Court, other federal and state courts, and other scholarly sources.
  • Explain your opinion on each of the following points:
    • Evaluate whether all the evidence from the house should have been suppressed as fruit of the poisonous tree, because the placing of a tracking device on the Blazer driven by Dripster without a warrant and without probable cause violated the Fourth Amendment.
    • Assess whether all the evidence from the house should have been suppressed because the use of the Bloodhound device without a warrant and without probable cause violated the Fourth Amendment.
    • Determine whether all evidence from the house should have been suppressed because the warrant issued by the magistrate was based upon information obtained in violation of the Fourth Amendment.
    • Rule on whether all evidence from the house should have been suppressed because the police officers did not knock and announce; the warrant was not a no-knock warrant.
    • Conclude whether the gun used by Stupido should have been suppressed because the officers had no right to search his car at the scene.
    • Examine whether Dummy’s conviction for marijuana possession should be overturned, because he was not read Miranda warnings before making a deal.
    • Evaluates whether Stupido’s confession should have been suppressed, because his lawyer was not allowed to see him.
    • Explain the validity of Dripster’s death sentence for shooting and paralyzing Innocent violates the Eighth Amendment.

The Supreme Court Opinion Final Paper

  • Must be 1,500 to 2,000 words in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing Center’s APA Style (Links to an external site.)
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:

Negligence

Based on your research, what is negligent security?
300 Word Discussion
Negligence
Negligence is a common liability associated with tort cases against security practitioners. Whether it is a failure to perform a duty, lack of training or improper level of background screening, negligence liability is one of the biggest problems facing private security.
Some of the cases and material available through online research date back over twenty years but their relevance in today’s scenarios is very much as real now as it was then.
Negligence can also lead to other torts representing serious potential financial losses. An improperly trained security officer runs a high risk of executing a false arrest or unwarranted search of an individual (Moore, 1988).
The class text and related Internet research can point towards a number of cases in which the plaintiffs have prevailed resulting in excessive fines and awards due to bad security practice.
The challenge that typically faces most security companies is that of the cost associated with the training of personnel. Many security contracts have very close profit margins right near actual cost many times. These tight margins prohibit training from a financial perspective.
However, the cost of not providing training can permanently ruin and destroy a business. Even if security companies provide state-mandated training, if required at all, many times the training is minimal and inadequate averaging 8 to 16 hours total (Button, 2007).
Meeting a state’s requirements may satisfy requirements for licensing but may not be enough to keep one out of civil tort for negligence. According to Pastor (2007), if a causal connection between a recognized harm and an insufficient level of training and supervision a negligence case may be proven.
Adequate supervision ties in with training in the respect that ensuring employees are properly prepared to carry out their duties. Recurring and remedial training are seen as components of effective training. Court cases revolving around negligent hiring practices are commonplace and numerous.
A common premise of many negligent hiring cases is:
The employer knew or should have known that the employee had a particular unfitness for the position so as to create a danger of harm to third persons;
The particular unfitness was known or should have been known at the time of the employee’s hiring or retention; and this particular unfitness proximately caused the plaintiff’s injury (Pastor, 2007)
Private Security Officers Employment Act of 2004
With the passing of the Private Security Officers Employment Act of 2004 (PSOA), an easier means to provide a substantial criminal records check has been provided to employers. Through established state channels a private security company can submit a criminal check on new and incumbent employees utilizing the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Criminal Information Center records database. This is the largest and most complete national repository of criminal records within the United States.
Employee Screening
Other potential areas of negligence when hiring a new employee include physical fitness and education. If a prospective security officer is not properly screened through the staffing process and the requirements of the contract or position to be filled are not properly translated into application and position requirements, the hiring entity is left exposed for potential negligent liability claims.
Case Law
REVIEW THE CASE LAW BELOW:
RONG DONG LI, Plaintiff, vs. AKAL SECURITY, INC., et al., Defendants. CASE NO. 10cv2465-LAB (BGS)
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA 2012 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 4993 January 17, 2012, Decided January 17, 2012, Filed
Li, an illegal immigrant and detainee at the El Centro Service Processing Center (“Detention Center”), alleges that Akal Security is liable for personal injuries he sustained when two other detainees attacked him in a bathroom. Akal is a private security company that provided security for the Center pursuant to a contract with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. (RONG DONG LI, Plaintiff, vs. AKAL SECURITY, INC.)
Li’s story is straightforward. He entered the men’s restroom at the Detention Center and saw two men fighting. He alerted guards, who came quickly, broke up the fight, and escorted the two men from the restroom. As he was washing his hands, after using the restroom himself, one of the men who had been fighting, joined by another man, entered the restroom and attacked Li. The attack lasted for three to four minutes, leaving Li bloody with injuries to his face and body. (RONG DONG LI, Plaintiff, vs. AKAL SECURITY, INC.)
Li’s grievance, in essence, is that Akal Security failed to protect him from the aggressions of fellow detainees at the Detention Center. Typically, this is a civil rights claim brought by prisoners under the Eighth Amendment, and it requires that prison officials demonstrate “deliberate indifference” to “conditions posing a substantial risk of serious harm.” Clem v. Lomeli, 566 F.3d 1177, 1181 (9th Cir. 2009) (quoting Farmer v. Brennan, 511 U.S. 825, 834, 114 S. Ct. 1970, 128 L. Ed. 2d 811 (1994)). Li doesn’t allege, though, that his Eighth Amendment rights were violated by Akal. He simply accuses Akal of negligence: (1) for failing to station guards outside of the restroom to respond to emergencies therein; (2) for its employees’ failure to respond to Li’s cries for help from within the restroom; (3) for its employees’ failure to segregate or detain the man Li had seen fighting, and who subsequently attacked Li; and (4) for failing to investigate the original fight. (RONG DONG LI, Plaintiff, vs. AKAL SECURITY, INC.)
On April 3, 2011, the Court dismissed with prejudice most of Li’s claims against Akal Security. One claim, for the negligent infliction of emotional distress, survived. The Court found that Li hadn’t stated adequate facts to support that claim, but it allowed him the opportunity to do so in amended complaint. Now before the Court is Akal’s motion to dismiss Li’s First Amended Complaint. In addition to alleging the negligent infliction of emotional distress, Li also alleges basic negligence. (RONG DONG LI, Plaintiff, vs. AKAL SECURITY, INC.)

Statistics Project One

Overview

The purpose of this project is to have you complete all of the steps of a real-world linear regression research project starting with developing a research question, then completing a comprehensive statistical analysis, and ending with summarizing your research conclusions.

Scenario

You have been hired by the D. M. Pan National Real Estate Company to develop a model to predict housing prices for homes sold in 2019. The CEO of D. M. Pan wants to use this information to help their real estate agents better determine the use of square footage as a benchmark for listing prices on homes. Your task is to provide a report predicting the housing prices based square footage. To complete this task, use the provided real estate data set for all U.S. home sales as well as national descriptive statistics and graphs provided.

Directions

Using the Project One Template located in the What to Submit section, generate a report including your tables and graphs to determine if the square footage of a house is a good indicator for what the listing price should be. Reference the National Statistics and Graphs document for national comparisons and the Real Estate Data spreadsheet (both found in the Supporting Materials section) for your statistical analysis.

Note: Present your data in a clearly labeled table and using clearly labeled graphs.

Specifically, include the following in your report:

Introduction

  1. Describe the report: Give a brief description of the purpose of your report.
    1. Define the question your report is trying to answer.
    2. Explain when using linear regression is most appropriate.
      1. When using linear regression, what would you expect the scatterplot to look like?
    3. Explain the difference between response and predictor variables in a linear regression to justify the selection of variables.

Data Collection

  1. Sampling the data: Select a random sample of 50 houses.
    1. Identify your response and predictor variables.
  2. Scatterplot: Create a scatterplot of your response and predictor variables to ensure they are appropriate for developing a linear model.

Data Analysis

  1. Histogram: For your two variables, create histograms.
  2. Summary statistics: For your two variables, create a table to show the mean, median, and standard deviation.
  3. Interpret the graphs and statistics:
    1. Based on your graphs and sample statistics, interpret the center, spread, shape, and any unusual characteristic (outliers, gaps, etc.) for the two variables.
    2. Compare and contrast the shape, center, spread, and any unusual characteristic for your sample of house sales with the national population. Is your sample representative of national housing market sales?

Develop Your Regression Model

  1. Scatterplot: Provide a graph of the scatterplot of the data with a line of best fit.
    1. Explain if a regression model is appropriate to develop based on your scatterplot.
  2. Discuss associations: Based on the scatterplot, discuss the association (direction, strength, form) in the context of your model.
    1. Identify any possible outliers or influential points and discuss their effect on the correlation.
    2. Discuss keeping or removing outlier data points and what impact your decision would have on your model.
  3. Find r: Find the correlation coefficient (r).
    1. Explain how the r value you calculated supports what you noticed in your scatterplot.

Determine the Line of Best Fit. Clearly define your variables. Find and interpret the regression equation. Assess the strength of the model.

  1. Regression equation: Write the regression equation (i.e., line of best fit) and clearly define your variables.
  2. Interpret regression equation: Interpret the slope and intercept in context.
  3. Strength of the equation: Provide and interpret R-squared.
    1. Determine the strength of the linear regression equation you developed.
  4. Use regression equation to make predictions: Use your regression equation to predict how much you should list your home for based on the square footage of your home.

Conclusions

  1. Summarize findings: In one paragraph, summarize your findings in clear and concise plain language for the CEO to understand. Summarize your results.
    1. Did you see the results you expected, or was anything different from your expectations or experiences?
      1. What changes could support different results, or help to solve a different problem?
      2. Provide at least one question that would be interesting for follow-up research.

What to Submit

To complete this project, you must submit the following:

Project One Template: Use this template to structure your report, and submit the finished version as a Word document.
