The article summary will include the following:
• Discussion of the focus of the research• Description of the hypothesis of the study• Description of how the study was conducted including the population that was studied, the methodology used (i.e. naturalistic observation, experiment, case study, survey, etc). How the data was collected and analyzed• Description of the results of the study

Your review/discussion of the article will include
A discussion of the way the research was conducted and potential impact on results (e.g. problems with the studymethodology that might have affected its validity and/or generalizability).
A description of three ideas inspired in you by the article.
A description of the use, impact, or potential the research might have.

For this type of academic paper scholarly publications from the APUS online library must be used.  Why is the APUS online library required? Scholarly sources are found in academic journals (The Journal of… is a good tip for identifying these) and the APUS online library has a very large set of holdings and a staff of librarians to assist.  You can connect with both by clicking the Library link while logged into your classroom.  Other university libraries also carry such journals but online access is frequently restricted to those universities’ enrolled students.  Hard copies from traditional “brick-and-mortar” libraries cannot be used unless you can also provide an online copy to verify the article’s existence in digital format.  This is because your instructor needs to be able to verify that you are using actual published journal articles, the journals they are published in, their dates of publication and their authors.  Although some of the following may be accessed through links in the APUS online library, popular magazines, Wikipedia, About.com, Ask.com, newspapers, blogs or other opinion-based publications may not be used.  Not all articles found in the databases are scholarly.  If you are unsure about the appropriateness of a resource, check with your instructor before using it for your assignment.  The source for your article must be cited in the paper body and listed in APA style in a page entitled “References” attached separately to the end of your paper.  (HINT: since this is a review of a single scholarly article, your reference page will only contain only SINGLE source.  Do not incorporate any information outside of this SINGLE source.) The Online Library contains and excellent discussion on identifying scholarly articles in the Tutorial and Student Studies Center.
APA style can be a bit like learning a second language.    HYPERLINK “http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/hypertext/apa/index.html” http://owl.english.purdue.edu/workshops/hypertext/apa/index.html is an excellent practical, how-to guide to this formatting style.  Your classroom Resources folder also contains APA formatting guides.

You don’t need to have an abstract, as is typically required for APA style, for this paper but you must include an APA formatted cover page in addition to the References page mentioned above.  The 2-3page requirement does not include the cover or reference pages and the paper must be formatted in Times New Roman or Arial font no larger than size 12 with 1” margins on all sides of the paper body and double spaced.  Length compliance is determined using these formatting rules in grading the work.  Formatting will be checked on your instructor’s end and a paper that falls short of the required length submitted in large font or with wide margins will receive a point deduction of 10% for each missing page.  Be careful to check your work for proper formatting and other instructions compliance before submitting.  Revisions cannot be allowed after students are notified via grading feedback of these problems.  Your paper must be written at a college level.  This means a minimum amount (nobody often achieves perfection) of spelling and grammar errors that don’t get in the way of following your points; no use of personal first or second person pronouns (“I” or “you”) in your article summary; no personal story sharing or creative writing style wording (papers that begin with a question or “Imagine for a moment that…” or “Webster’s Dictionary defines _____ as…” style openers are fine for some courses but not for this assignment.  Simply start with, “This paper focuses on ________” with the topic of your paper in the blank space, and then move on to summarizing the findings of the publication you cite in the paper and the other required elements).

The 2nd part of your paper will include your review/discussion of the article as outlined previously. This section of your paper may include first person writing.  Please be sure that your article summary is clear and distinct from your review of the article. Do not intermingle the two sections of your paper.

post your response for this discussion forum, and don’t forget to reply to at least one of your classmates:

Many people are being sentenced to really long prison terms. This means that the prisoners are aging. Some inmates come into prison with terminal illnesses while others develop terminal illnesses while incarcerated. Please review the article in this week’s lesson and discuss the following ethical dilemma…..

Bob is a 60 year old man serving a life sentence in prison for robbery.  He is a habitual offender and is on his third strike. Bob is also terminally ill with brain cancer. The doctors estimate that he has six months to live. His family would like for him to come home where they can care for him until his death.

  • Imagine you are a state lawmaker and Bob’s family is requesting that a law be passed to release terminally ill inmates from prison so they can be cared for by their families.
    • If you were a lawmaker would you support this law?
    • Provide three reasons to support your opinion.
    • Use research and empirical data to support your opinion.

Remember your post must be at least 300 words and you must reply to at least one classmate’s post with a 100 word reply. You will not be able to see your classmate’s posts until you post your original response.  Make sure your reply is completely different than your main post.

Re: Topic 5 DQ 1

Internal and external stakeholders play an essential role in the healthcare system, and the participation of these stakeholders results in the successful implementation of the change project. These stakeholders are patients, family members, nurses, pharmacists, government, and insurance companies. A stakeholder is a person or group with something to gain or lose through the outcomes of a change project (Dialogue by Design, 2008 as cited in Health Knowledge, n.d). Every stakeholder has a different degree of interest, responsibility, and authority. In order to develop a relationship with stakeholders, it is essential to have strategized plan for the way stakeholders’ support will be requested and implicitly incorporated into the change project and process (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d. as cited in Akins, 2021). The support of stakeholders is essential as their contribution and participation will lead to the success of the change project.

In order to secure the support of stakeholders, it is crucial to ensure that stakeholders understand the benefits of the change project and their role in the implementation of the change project. Moreover, getting the stakeholders’ support involves strong motivation from those directly affected by the change project, and these people could be the patients, families, and other stakeholders. This motivation helps to secure the support of stakeholders and increase their participation in implementing the change project (Pandi-Perumal, 2015).

Topic 5 DQ 1

To ensure success with a project it helps to know the key stakeholders. Whether internal or external all projects have stakeholders. To help reduce and uncover risks and increase stakeholder approval it is important to engage with them from the beginning of a project. Stakeholders are important to a project in 4 ways.

  1. Providing expertise – Stakeholders are a wealth of knowledge about current processes, historical information, and industry insight. Key stakeholders can provide requirements or constraints based on information from their industry that will be important to have when understanding project constraints and risks.
  2. Reducing and uncovering risks – Engaging and involving stakeholders will reduce and uncover risk on a project. Uncovering risks and discussing a plan to work through them before issues arise will increase success of the project.
  3. Increasing project success – Gathering and reviewing project requirements with stakeholders will help increase project success. Stakeholders should always be aware of the project scope, key milestones, and when they will be expected to review project prior to finished project.
  4. Granting project acceptance – Engaging with stakeholders along the way will have a positive conclusion on the project. The final acceptance of project should just be a formality if they have had an opportunity to review the project along the way. (Schoenhard, PMP, CSM, 2019)

For my change project I will engage with nursing administration and get their perspective on the psychological effect Covid-19 has had on health care professionals. With their assistance begin the implementation of small things that are cost effective, we can do for staff to help them cope with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Discussion 1: Contributing to Community Recovery

Discussion 1: Contributing to Community Recovery

The damaging effects of disaster on mental health and the increased vulnerability to addiction of survivors are well documented. The most common conditions that follow a disaster are post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, grief, and an increase in substance abuse and addictive behaviors (Beaudoin, 2011; Cepeda, Valdez, Kaplan, & Hill, 2010; Johnson & Fendrich, 2009).

As a helping professional, it is essential that you become familiar with federal and local regulations that can impact your role in community recovery.

For this Discussion, review the two scenarios below. Choose one of the scenarios and reflect on the ways in which government and community organizations might contribute to the treatment of addiction.

Scenario A: You are the director of a local addiction treatment center in a West Coast metropolitan area that has experienced an earthquake of major magnitude. The earthquake has caused a large loss of life and destruction of property. The entire metropolitan infrastructure is disrupted, including transportation, sanitation, emergency medical care, and power. People are unable to get to work, children are unable to attend school, and people are confused and frightened. Many mental health and substance abuse facilities have been destroyed, so their services will be interrupted for a long time. A large number of citizens are left homeless, without jobs, and are dealing with the trauma of the event and loss of family and friends. The level of destruction is so vast and far reaching that it will be several months to a year before life returns to what the community could consider normal.

Scenario B: You are the director of a local addiction treatment center in a small Midwestern town of 20,000. A tornado has struck the community, cutting a path of destruction through the entire town and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage. More devastating, the tornado has resulted in a huge loss of life, including the deaths of over 100 children who were in the local elementary school. Many families are left homeless and grieving over the loss of their property, businesses, friends, and loved ones. The loss of such a large number of children has a particularly serious impact on the emotional well-being of the town’s citizens.

Course Wrap-up Assignment

What did you learn?

This assignment is designed as an appraisal of what you have learned over the course: as a consideration of the complex relationships between natural and human environments (geography/landscape, chronology/history, cultural and personal memory, and visual communication/art history), and as a self-reflective analysis of what you have gained from pursuing these studies.

For your write up, provide a discussion of the materials and approaches you’ve been introduced to through the course lectures, discussions and assignment practices with reference to visual culture and associated concerns.

Lecture material can often seem somewhat abstract – does ‘seeing’ how the concepts are picked up for individual research help illuminate how it might be more broadly applicable? Refer specifically to Alexa Heenan’s presentation on the American West.

NOTE: This paper is not intended as a response to your course project and/or the other course assignments specifically, but rather as an evaluation of course issues and considerations more generally (i.e. don’t just summarize what we/you did, but elaborate on the kinds of directions and insights that might have been opened up for you). Nor is it a course evaluation – there are other venues for such. This is for you to reflect and consider your own developments in knowledge and/or skill.

One of the following questions might help get you started:

Does this information and/or approaches raise other questions for you?

What points of interest or directions of study were brought to your attention?

What struck you as most interesting/informative/valuable? Why?

Has course content helped you in your personal/historical understanding? How?

What did you learn about visual culture and ways to study it?

Suggested length 3-4 pages (around 750-1000 words)

  1. ultural Perspectives on Death Systems

This question serves as a minor antecedent activity to your capstone research/problem paper whereby you are asked to write the literature review portion of a research/problem paper “exploring the death and dying rituals, practices, burial methods, and beliefs about the afterlife for a culture other than the Anglo-American culture.”

In this WK3 activity, you will explore your own family’s culture regarding death practices and death systems – from your own heritage (ex. Jamaica, Hawaii, Japan, Korea, China, Spain, Mexico, Cuba, France, Africa, a specific Native American tribe, etc.). Although death comes for every culture around the world, each one has its own unique rituals and memorials for their loved ones. In at least one robust paragraph, describe the beliefs and traditions about death, rituals for burial, funerals and ceremonies, grieving practices, music, dance, etc. for your ancestral culture; and in one paragraph describe the death systems of your family culture – certifications, notifications, autopsies, capital punishment, suicide, homicide, organ transplantation and donation…

  1. Healthcare and End-of-Life Issues
  2. In one robust paragraph, compare and contrast Hospice vs. Nonhospice palliative care:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Complete the chart below with the reality that contradicts the myth provided:

Death and Dying Myths

Emerging Reality in America

You will become more afraid of death as you grow toward old age and your death becomes more imminent.

Terminal patients go through predictable stages as they approach death.

A sudden or unexpected death has more adverse effects on the survivors than does a death that is expected.

Older men are likely to die at home, and older women are more likely to die in institutional settings such as hospitals and nursing homes.

Among those adults whose spouses die, elderly widows and widowers are much more likely to die themselves a short time later.

Hospice utilizes morphine to euthanize people.

Being Mortal Chs. 5 AND 6 (Provide brief responses to the questions below)

  • What comes to mind when Guwande outlined the Three Plagues of nursing home existence: boredom, loneliness and helplessness?
  • In the story of Sarah and Rich Monopoli, Sara underwent excruciating treatment right to the end. What attitudes and approaches used by this couple do you admire, or agree with, and with which do you disagree? If you were Sara’s doctors, what would you do differently? As a family member or close friend, what conversation would you have with them, or should you just “mind your own business”?  What were the tradeoffs of Sara’s continued treatments? What did it buy her?
  • Dr. Gawande quotes statistics that show 25% of Medicare spending goes to the 5% of patients in the last stages of life. How should priorities be set? With catastrophic illness, the trend seems to indicate high costs during the onset of the illness, a leveling off of costs during the mid-stages, and skyrocketing costs during the last stages of life. Yet, the extreme or even experimental measures do not always improve the quality of life, or even prolong life. How can we avoid ICUs that turn out to be, as one doctor commented, “a warehouse for the dying”?
  • Why did the addition of animals trigger so many improvements among residents?
  • Nurse Creed is a hospice nurse, skilled in her profession. Summarize her strategies as she spoke with her families. Do you agree with her apparent priorities? What personal traits do you think contribute to someone choosing and being successful at this nursing specialty?

Title CITY OF SOMERVILLE, MA: TRANSACTION ANALYSIS (FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING)

DATA SET BACKGROUND

Paul Revere rode through the City of Somerville, Massachusetts, during his famous “Midnight Ride.” Its Prospect Hill was where the first Grand Union flag was raised under orders by General George Washington on January 1, 1776.

Today, Somerville is a city with a population of almost 80,000 and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country. It is located just two miles north of Boston and occupies just over 4 square miles.

The City of Somerville, MA, posts its checkbook online (Links to an external site.) for public use. This data analytics activity uses the City of Somerville (Somerville) checkbook dataset for the years 2013 – 2016 and contains more than 55,000 records.

Note: Even though the City of Somerville, MA, uses a fiscal year from July 1 through June 30, calendar years are used here so that the analysis does not get complicated from the conversion from fiscal years to calendar years in Excel pivot tables.

DATA DICTIONARY

Item Number: This field is a sequential number assigned during the year. The year was added to the item number to create a unique identifier for each transaction.

Category of Gov: This field indicates whether the transaction relates to Education, General Government, or Public Works, the three divisions of government for the City of Somerville.

Vendor Name: This field contains the name of the entity related to the transaction.

Amount: This field is the amount of the check.

Check Date: This field is the date that the check was written.

Department: This field is the department within the Category of Government related to this transaction.

Check # : This field is the sequential check number.

Org Description: This field gives additional detail about the specific organization within the general Department related to this transaction.

Account Desc: This field provides additional detail about the purpose of the transaction.

Item Class: This is the only fictitious field that was added to Somerville’s dataset. This field attempts to classify Somerville’s checkbook items into broad classes for ease of analysis and interpretation.

REQUIREMENTS

For each of the following requirements, create a new pivot table in a new worksheet. Name each new worksheet as “Req 1,” “Req 2,” etc. Format the dollar amounts in each pivot table or pivot chart using the accounting format with zero decimal places. Format non-currency numbers in each pivot table or pivot chart using the accounting format with zero decimal places.

From 2013 – 2016, what was the total spending in each of the four calendar years?

In each of the years 2013 – 2016, how much was spent in each of the three categories of government (Education, General Government, and Public Works)?

In 2016, which account (use the field “Account Desc” for this answer) was the largest in the General Government category?

In 2016, who was Somerville’s largest vendor as measured by total dollars spent? How many separate payments did the city make to this vendor? What was the average amount of each payment to this vendor? Why did the city pay this vendor?

How much in expenditures did Somerville have related to Property, Plant and Equipment (use the field “Item Class” for this answer) in the General Government category in each of the years 2013 – 2016? How much in expenditures in each of those years were related to repairs and maintenance?

Prepare a pivot table that shows a line chart of Somerville’s expenditures in each of the three categories of government (Education, General Government, and Public Works) for the years 2013 – 2016. Prepare a pivot chart using the line chart type of this information on the same worksheet. Analyze the pivot chart and summarize the trends.
