the topic is Total Quality Management

Extra credit is available for the class by preparing a New Topics Paper. The paper will consist of a minimum length of ten single-spaced pages and must follow the formatting and guidelines for paper preparation. In addition, copies of your works cited articles must be turned in with the paper. You may receive anywhere from zero to three points added to your final grade depending on the quality of your paper.

In addition to the numerous topics listed here in 16 general categories, you may select another “new” topic that you may find in your initial research. Please refer to the Written Assignment section of the syllabus for paper formatting requirements and paper guidelines.

Your topic choice must be approved. As soon as you decide you will be preparing an extra credit paper, submit a first, second, and third choice. I will then let you know who will be preparing which topic; assignments will be made on a first come-first served basis.

My idea here is that you would find the MOST recent information on these topics. For example, you could go to the Library databases and look for information. Or you could go to the library and physically look up references. Do not simply re-hash what your textbook says about the topic – you MUST provide new information. If you rehash what the book says, you will lose most of your points.

The points will be allocated for the quality of the paper presentation itself (in order to encourage you to not treat the project lightly, rather than to punish you for not using color graphics!) and points for coverage of your topic.

In the paper:

1. state what the topic means and how it can be applied,

2. give at least three example of an application of the topic,

3. provide your opinion about the future of the topic (for example, bar coding could be replaced by RFID tags if the price per unit decreases significantly),

4. provide the most recent information that you can find about the idea/issue,

5. provide a list of the references that you used or found helpful – books, articles, web pages, etc., and

6. provide copies of the reference materials you used (except for books)

References:

You must use a minimum of six references from books, textbooks, reputable journals and/or news periodicals. You may use no more than one textbook reference. You may use web references to support your paper; however, the web references (other than those from the journal databases at the Library) do not count against the six required references.

ESSAY: WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

If you mow the lawn, I’ll give you twenty bucks. How about for five dollars, or even two bucks—would you do it? Would you mow the neighbor’s lawn for free out of the goodness of your heart, or only if Mom told you to do it? Okay, now think about this: if you memorize a list of fifteen countries, you’re guaranteed to get 100% on your next history quiz. Will you memorize that list? If you finish your homework by 8 p.m., you can watch TV . . . but it can only be the news. Do you care enough to complete your studies by then? If you pass driver’s education, you can get a learner’s permit to drive. Will you show up for class? If you arrive to class on time, you don’t get marked tardy. Are you on time, even after lunch is over? If you eat broccoli, even though you hate the taste, you’ll get lots of nutrients in your body. Do you eat that vegetable? If you drink milk, your bones will be stronger. Do you drink milk or instead have a soda pop? If you buy rollerblades, you won’t have money to buy your sister a birthday gift. Do you make the purchase for yourself or save your pennies for her?

Why do you do the things you do?

OBJECTIVES

  • Write responses to assess your motivations in different situations.
Directions

What motivates you? You are faced with situations every day where you have to make choices, and there is a deep reason that compels you to do so. Some choices are just matter-of-fact, such as showing up to school. It’s the law. Being motivated to go to school could simply come from the desire to not have a visit from the truancy officer, or it could be that your family really values learning. But other choices—like what you wear or how you talk—have motivating influences. Do you want to talk cool or be popular, so you use slang? Do you do a good job on your English essay because you want a good grade, or do you simply love to write and you enjoy putting effort into your hobby? There are so many motivating forces: acceptance, respect, and competency (being able to do a good job), to name a few. Some people are motivated by having power, influence, or control.

Your task is to take some time to reflect on the questions presented below and write responses to each question. Place all of your responses in one paper, and you can number the questions on your paper along the way. By the time you finish writing your responses, you should have a better idea of what motivates you to do and act certain ways. This knowledge is useful if you decide you ever want to change your reason for doing something or the attitude behind it.

Questions
  • What activities do you do a lot because you enjoy them? What makes the activities enjoyable, and do you get anything out of the experience?
  • What activities do you do a lot that you don’t enjoy? (These might be chores or responsibilities you can’t get out of.) Why do you still do them? How do you motivate yourself to get through it?
  • Why do some hobbies appeal to you but others don’t?
  • Which school subjects do you find fascinating to learn about and which ones bore you? Are there any subjects that make you feel some anxiety to learn about or electives you try to get out of taking? What is it about these subjects that motivate you to do well or avoid them?
  • What kind of grades do you get in your classes? Do you put in the maximum or minimum effort? Why do you do it that way? Are there expectations you perceive and what are they?
  • How do you reward yourself for doing something hard?
  • What inspires you to do a good job?
  • How do you like people to reward you?

Deliverable 7 – Reorganization

Competency

This competency will allow you to demonstrate your ability and skill as a consultant and use your analysis of NoJax’s structure and organizational behavior to provide a plan for reorganization.

Instructions

You have been asked by NoJax to come in as a consultant and analyze the business for factors that impact the organizational behavior of the company. NoJax would like to ensure that their company design is current and that their employees are as efficient as possible. You have been analyzing several elements of the organization structure and behaviors using the NoJax Company Background document Click for more options

to identify areas of improvement. You will use that information to provide NoJax a new reorganization plan to continue their success, to be more efficient, and to stay ahead of their competition.

In your reorganization report, address the following questions:

  • Using your behavior analysis from module 01, provide a detailed plan to positively change current employee behavior. Include at least three aspects of diversity that will have a positive impact on the behavior of the organization. What new processes and continued training plans can NoJax implement to ensure successful assimilation of new employees?
  • Utilizing the Big-Five personality traits you identified in module 02, relate them to how management can affect organization culture. How can the culture be altered in a positive manner to improve relationships with management and employees? What plan will you put in place to continue the positive relationships?
  • Include the key elements you identified in module 03 that go into creating an organization as you describe NoJax’s company structure. How can the basic structure of NoJax be improved to better align business goals and employee objectives? Include at least five elements to improve the structure.
  • Using the barriers in communication you identified in module 04, propose at least one change for each of NoJax’s barriers, so they are able to change their communication process. How will a more effective and supportive communication process have the most impact and build better relationships and a stronger culture within the company?
  • Utilizing what you identified in module 05 as the process of decision-making NoJax currently uses, how can they become more efficient and better use the negotiation process? Make sure you identify each step of the decision-making process NoJax currently uses. Then you will need to add any elements of the decision-making process that are missing. If any current step is not working or is weak, you will need to describe how NoJax can improve each of those steps to be more efficient.
  • In your proposed change for NoJax from module 06, how should each management person best use their management style to have the greatest positive impact on employees? How can management maintain a balance between the current culture and making new and improved relationships to minimize resistance to change? Include at least six elements in your plan.

Chapter 7

Chapter 7: Discussion

Go online and find information about a well-known psychopath.

1. What interpersonal, emotional, and behavioral characteristics does the individual exemplify that suggest to you that he/she is a psychopath? Provide a link(s) to your source(s).

Now, find an article on a well-known individual that the media or society in general portrayed as a psychopath, but that you, given your reading of the chapter, believe is not a psychopath.

2. Explain why. Provide a link(s) to your source(s).

Make sure to:

  • Write a short essay or paragraph of at least 300 words.
  • Use concrete examples/details and avoid generalities.
  • Address all questions.
  • Use proper grammar and punctuation.
  • If you researched your topic and are using information from what you learned, remember to cite your sources.
  • Do not plagiarize.
  • You will not be able to edit your assignment once you post, so please proofread and spell check before hitting post!
  • As part of the assignment, you must also reply to ONE of your classmates with at least 150 words. You will have to POST FIRST to see your classmates’ postings. Make sure your replies are a thoughtful and relevant to what your classmate has posted. Try to build the discussion and keep it going.
  • YOU must post your word count at the end of your discussion and the word count at the end of your reply.  Your references cannot be included in your word count.

Health Law Discussion-300 words

You are the CEO of Acme Hospital, a small rural facility. On your staff, there is a physician (OB-GYN), Dr. Thomas Cole, with whom you have been having some problems. Dr. Cole:

  • does not finish his morning rounds on a regular basis
  • does not attend medical staff meetings
  • often very late in arriving to deliver babies
  • most of the time, the nurses on duty in the delivery room deliver the majority of Dr. Cole’s babies

You know that these issues must be addressed but there are other connecting problems.

  • First, Dr. Cole is the son of Dr. Frederick Cole who just retired after 55 years of service with Acme Hospital.
  • “Dr. Fred” was much beloved among hospital staff and before he left, he used his charm and status to make certain staff members (you were not one) promise to help and to protect his son, the younger Cole.

You know that when you begin raising these issues there will likely be resistance to take any action.

Please discuss the following:

  1. What are the possible liability issues that the younger Dr. Cole is exposing the facility to?
  2. How would you manage the staff that promised to help the younger Dr. Cole?
  3. Would you approach the elder Dr. Cole? Why or why not?
  4. Is this a problem that can be “fixed”? If so, how can it be fixed? Are you willing to give the younger Dr. Cole the time to “fix” the issues as the CEO?

Article #2: Global Perspective

Assignment Name: Global Perspective Article
Purpose: Construct an evidence-based argumentative history paper
Skills:

  • Produce argumentative, thesis-driven, and evidence-based academic papers.
  • Construct an evidence-based argument that integrates multiple perspectives related to a topic in the history of South Africa. (Global Perspective)

Knowledge:

  • Assess key events, central themes, and questions pertaining to South African history.

Task:

Write a minimum 500-word article you will construct an evidence-based argument that integrates multiple perspectives on a topic related to your Travel Guidebook. (Global Perspective)

This is a perspective article. The primary purpose of this perspective essay is to accurately and fairly present the views of multiple people or groups and provide adequate support for those views using concrete examples. Note: you are not being asked to “choose a side” here. The goal is to understand the motivations, thoughts, and actions of two or more groups or people.

Let’s use the same Soweto / Apartheid topic example from the last article assignment. For a Travel Guide topic “Taking a Stand in Soweto” you would want to use this article assignment to write a paper that examines multiple perspectives on an issue related to apartheid in Soweto. One way of doing this would be to choose a primary source that provoked reactions from multiple groups. In this example, one might choose the Afrikaans Medium Decree (Links to an external site.) passed in 1974 that decreed the use of Afrikaans and English in all schools. Such an article would then analyze the different perspectives on this decree by schoolchildren, public figures, and government officials.

Some other ways to approach this assignment can be:

– Choosing an event to analyze from multiple perspectives

– Analyze different perspectives on a custom or practice.

– Analyze different approaches to solving a problem.

Many of you have received specific recommendations on how to tailor your topic to this assignment written in your topic proposal comments. I strongly recommend reviewing them prior to beginning this paper, and making an appointment to discuss further if necessary.

Make sure your paper begins with an introduction, continues with body paragraphs, and ends with a brief conclusion. Your introduction must feature a straightforward thesis statement that identifies your historical argument. The thesis for this paper will depend on how you approach the topic, but the thesis should in all cases be a debatable claim with logical reasons of support. Your body paragraphs need to begin with topic sentences that establish a connection to your argument. Each body paragraph must contain support from reliable and/or scholarly sources that are properly cited using footnotes.

Double-space all text (except for footnote text). Use margins of one inch on each side of each page. Indent the first line of each paragraph.

Your paper must be at least 500 words, but should be as long as necessary to effectively answer the prompt. Paginate the paper throughout and include a word count at the end.

Submit as a Microsoft Word or PDF file.

Format your paper in accordance with the standards of the Chicago Manual of Style (Links to an external site.). Identify all directly and indirectly cited content with the aid of proper footnotes (Links to an external site.).

Submit the paper to Canvas by the date indicated. Please and by all means heed what the syllabus states with regard to academic honesty (particularly plagiarism) and late submissions.

Papers that are off-topic and/or do not match the topic of your proposal will not be graded. They will will receive a “0” score until they are rewritten to conform with the topic of your guidebook, with the regular late penalties applied until resubmission.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the Week Three Lecture in the left navigation, read Chapters 4 and 14 in the textbook and The Case For ‘Data Governance’ (Links to an external site.) article, and view the Data: Ethical Use and Storage (Links to an external site.) video. You will use these sources to support your work in this assignment.

As part of your IT Proposal final assignment, you will explain how your proposed information system solution will ensure data quality and security. This assignment will prepare you for that part of the IT Proposal. Review the instructions provided in the Week Six IT Proposal to begin thinking about how your proposal will address this topic.

The reading in the text provides two key reasons for poor data quality, “the rush to install new systems and the failure to take an integrated view of the organization’s data” (p. 109). Data security breaches seem to occur every other day, and as discussed in the Week Three lecture, there are serious implications for organizations that do not take the necessary measures to ensure data security. Include the following elements in your paper supporting your statements using the required sources for this assignment.

  • Analyze the role of data in information systems for business and describe the risks that can arise from poor data quality.
    • Explain the challenges that can result from poor data quality. Provide an example of the results of poor data quality from your own personal or professional experience.
    • Explain at least two methods of how organizations can ensure good data including the structure and applications necessary.
  • Analyze the risks of poor data security.
    • Research an article in the popular media that covers a recent data breach. Explain the impact of the data security breach on the organization and its leaders using evidence from your article.
  • Explain the role of data governance in keeping data secure.

The Data Quality and Security Paper

  • Must be two to three double-spaced pages (600-900 words) in length (

Assesment 1: Accounting tools and practices

Develop either a training deck (12-15 slides) or training manual (3-4 pages) to ensure new hires have a solid understanding of income statements, balance sheets, and the elements that go into them.

Introduction

This portfolio work project will help you to not only better understand commonly used accounting tools, but it will also give you the opportunity to use your skills and experience by preparing training materials to train someone else.

Scenario

You work for an organization that is seeking growth and recently has hired new district managers to assist in this growth. In talking to other regional managers, you have heard that some district managers do not have a thorough understanding of commonly used accounting tools including an income statement and balance sheet. You have a new district manager hire, John, and see the need to do some training with him so he has a solid understanding of income statements, balance sheets, and the elements that go into them, including advertising costs, Web development costs, and store opening costs.

In preparing to train your new hire, you have determined that the use of examples (a picture is worth a thousand words) can be a great approach to use. So you have decided to gather some examples from the company’s summary of significant accounting policies from its latest financial statements.

You may apply this scenario to either Option 1 or Option 2, described in Requirements below.

Your Role

You are a regional manager for Urban Outfitters or your selected organization and oversee a number of districts. You have recently brought a new district manager on board and want to ensure he has the knowledge and tools needed to effectively do his job.

Requirements

Option 1:

The organization you work for is Urban Outfitters. Use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission website to find the Urban Outfitter’s 2016–2017 financial statement’s summary of significant accounting policies. Look at the data for 2015, 2016, and 2017 for the following examples of essential elements you need to cover with John and ensure his understanding.

  • Advertising. Examine the criteria used to expense and capitalize advertising costs and where these costs appear in the financial statement.
  • Store opening costs. Examine how store opening and organization costs were handled and where these costs appear in the financial statement.
  • Website development costs. Examine the approaches taken during the application and infrastructure development stage and the planning and operating stage.
Option 2:

Use a firm or scenario of your choosing.

Before choosing a company, read the assessment thoroughly to ensure:

  • The company fits the assessment requirements.
  • You have access to the financial statement’s summary of significant accounting policies and the Note disclosures from which you are drawing your materials. Include this information in the appendix for reference.
  • You can distribute the data without disclosing confidential company information.
Training Materials

As you prepare your training materials for John, use the examples you collected from the company’s Notes to financial documents to illustrate how you address the following items:

  • Explain how one or more of the following costs are captured:
    • Advertising.
    • Store opening. If store opening costs were capitalized, over what time period would you amortize them? Explain why you selected this time period.
    • Website development.
  • Analyze the importance of Notes to financial statements in interpreting financial statements.
  • Explain how the accounting method the company uses affects the financial statements.
  • Explain how the financial statements would differ if another method were used to capture the costs.
  • If you have a preference for capitalizing or expensing these costs, explain why it is your preference.

Deliverable Format

Leadership has asked that you develop either a training deck or a training manual that you will use with John and that can be deployed with other new hires as well. Regardless of the format selected, the information should address the points identified above and with detailed explanations within the notes areas of slides or within the training manual text. It will also be helpful to include information in regard to why each item is important to the organization as well as the success of the new district manager.

To use your time and John’s time wisely, be conscientious about providing thorough yet concise information. These materials are expected to be used by others for future training needs, so make sure they are well organized and clear.

Training materials requirements:
  • 12–15 slides for a training deck. Include additional details as slide notes.
  • 3–4 pages for a training manual.
Related company standards for either format:
  • The training manual is a professional document and should therefore follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document Guidelines, including single-spaced paragraphs.
    • To learn more about creating presentations, click “MBA Program Resources” and then “Presentation Skills.”
  • In addition to the training deck or manual materials, include:
    • Title (slide or page).
    • References (slide or page).
    • Appendix with supporting materials. If you are using a firm or scenario of your choosing, ensure faculty has sufficient information to understand how you reached your recommendation.
  • At least two APA-formatted references.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Explain how accounting concepts and practices impact financial reporting.
    • Explain how the accounting method the company used affects the financial statements.
    • Compare how two accounting methods differ in their effects on the financial statements.
  • Competency 4: Communicate financial information with multiple stakeholders.
    • Communicate accounting information clearly.

Faculty will use the scoring guide to review your deliverable as if they were your immediate supervisor. Review the scoring guide prior to developing and submitting your assessment.
