Human Resource Management

 CASE: STARK ENGINEERING

Many different organizations in various industries have focused on safety and health for employees. STARK ENGINEERING, provides engineering, network, and infrastructure services to numerous communications industry firms. With 500 employees, STARK has emphasized safety to all managers and employees. The success of its safety efforts resulted in STARK’s efforts being designated “Safety Program of the Year” by an international safety forum. To emphasize the importance of safety, every STARK individual signs a safety pledge upon being employed. After hire, all employees are expected to identify any potential safety problems and assist co-workers as needed. A safety guidebook is posted on the firm’s Website, with a special section being set for safety training and information. A safety newsletter is posted every month also. The success of STARK’s safety efforts is evident. Compared with an industry incident rate of 9.6%, STARK’s rate is less than 1%. Recently, the firm had zero lost workdays in the year which is extremely unusual. The safety focus of STARK is paying off for the employees in terms of their personal safety, as well as maintaining low safety costs for the business. Having been in business for over 50 years STARK’ has experienced highs and lows in organizational performance. In the past decade, the firm has faced a dramatically changing business environment from competitors. Despite their success in safety, STARK’ was increasingly viewed by customers and analysts of the industry as lagging in its strategies for service provision. Even the compensation system at STARK’ was viewed as traditional and paternalistic in nature because it emphasized rewarding employees primarily for their length of service. Also, most promotions were made internally, which created a more static organizational culture.

Q1. Discuss TWO of the main Human Resources functions inside this organisation and their impact on employees. In your response describe and analyse responsibilities and tasks of individuals at different levels within the organisation that are likely to impact the safety initiatives at STARK.

Q2. There are a variety of employee types in STARK e.g. department heads, managers, trainees and a variety of support staff, both technical and administrative. STARK is suffering high employee turnover of their young managers and their clerical trainees in the administrative department. Using the context of the case, analyse what might be causing the staff turnover. Suggest how these two roles might be re-designed to reduce the employee turnover. Provide supporting justification, with examples, for the roles you design.

Q3. To improve the retention of staff at STARK, the HR team decided to develop their recruitment practices to find suitable department heads and management trainees to work at the organisation. Use the case and industry sector to research and explain clearly, the recruitment strategies you would recommend to the HR department to search for these two types of employees? Evaluate your own recommendations in terms of improving employee retention.

Diversity and Culture

Your final assignment helps to integrate all that you have learned over the course. Your future role as a leader will benefit from this exercise by applying your new knowledge to the real world.

Answer each prompt using at least 350 words.

  1. Develop a list of five criteria for a CEO assuming that he or she has effective diversity management and inclusion as a strategic goal. Now that this course is coming to a close, select any one of the managers in a case from this text. Evaluate this manager on your established criteria for diversity. Based on your evaluation, give this person a grade ranging from A to F for his or her diversity.
  2. In terms of the change model (unfreezing, change, and refreezing) what internal and external forces might resist each of the following: instituting mandatory diversity training for all employees, appointing a chief diversity officer, initiating applications for diversity awards, or establishing a phased retirement program?
  3. Assume that you are a mentor to an employee who came from a low-class background. She is bright and has career potential. However, you recognize that some elements of her behavior such as the way she speaks, her dress, her manners, and her communication patterns will prevent her from advancing to the next level in your organization. How could you help her?
  4. The list of primary and secondary dimensions of diversity include:
    – Race
    – Ethnicity
    – Age
    – Gender
    – Sexual Orientation
    – Physical and Mental Challenges
    – Social Class
    – Religion
    – Appearance
    – Language and
    – Military Service

Now that you have read about the primary and secondary dimensions of diversity, what have you learned about yourself? Of all of the dimensions covered in this text which so far have affected your life the most? What examples can you provide to substantiate your answer? Do you think these may change in importance during your lifetime? Why or why not?

Data structures and arrays-1

Please read below and respond with 150 words or more.

Data structures allow programmers an easy and efficient way to store and  organize data and with the use of specific algorithms, we are able to  the data stored in those structures. Data structures provide the user  certain advantages such as efficiency, reusability, and abstraction all  of which may prove to be useful in a programmers development. An array  that is used in data structures can be defined as a container for a set  of numbers, or elements of the same type that can easily be retrieved  based on the index number that the variable has been assigned. Arrays  may be useful in programming in that it is a more concise and efficient  way of writing code and the retrieval process of certain variables is  easier than alternative methods. Arrays can be used in a number of ways  such as in modern pc games where a user has a specific skill that may be  assigned to a certain key, the data is retrieved from the stored  database and used to compute the outcome. Likewise, it can also be used  in contact lists in cellphones, in the same sort of way in which a  number is stored based on the name of the person it is assigned to.

Discussion: Reflections on Qualitative Research for Social Change

Be the change you wish to see in the world.
—Mahatma Gandhi, (1869–1948)
Indian Leader/Anti-War Activist

Education without action is like a billboard in a basement—big, bold, but actionable to no one. By incorporating social change as part of its mission statement, the leadership of Walden University is asking students, faculty, and leadership to consider the possibility of how to use one’s education to deliberately be in the world and make some part of it a better place.

Consider what you have learned from this course—the fundamental procedures of how to conduct qualitative research; and the critical processes that identify the researcher as a self-reflective co-participant. For this week, reflect on how these considerations have influenced your understanding of research and your direction for your dissertation or doctoral study.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the readings from the Ravitch and Carl and Rubin and Rubin and consider reflecting on your experiences in qualitative research throughout this course.
  • Review the media programs related to The Qualitative Dissertation Experience: A Doctoral Candidate Experience and consider the experience of other doctoral candidates through this qualitative research process.

ASSIGNMENT

Post your responses to the following:

  • Explain what social change means to you as a Walden doctoral candidate. What experiences from the course most influenced your understanding?
  • Explain what in qualitative research you would like to know more about as a result of taking this course.
  • Reflect on your problem statement and the next steps for developing a research topic for your dissertation or doctoral study. Include an explanation of whether you would choose a qualitative approach, why or why not.

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

“Disaster Recovery” Please respond to the following:

  • Disaster recovery has been the topic of study this week. What do you think is the most difficult and expensive disaster to plan for? Do you think companies plan adequately? In your experience (or research if you have no experience) what aspect is most lacking in corporate planning? Why do you think this is?
  • Additionally, this week, we are going to start thinking about the CISSP Certification. This is a very important certification for managers in the IT field. Managers need to understand the gravity of securing data and data systems. Strayer University, the faculty and staff, want all our students to be successful in the IT field. While we don’t require students to get certifications, we strongly encourage them to do so as the likelihood of finding and being qualified for that dream job is increased with certification as well as education (your degree). Start thinking about where and when you’re going to sit for your certification exam. You know more than you may think, and you are encouraged to sit for your exam as soon as you’re ready. How will you know that you’re ready? Discuss it with your instructor and your classmates.

Week 3 Project Bus 3101

Escalation

The following scenario looks at how escalation occurs when making a decision.

Chip Davis has been running his car dealership business successfully for five years. This year, he started to suffer losses because some of his customers have defaulted on their payments. At the end of the third quarter of the year, the defaulters have increased and the losses have intensified so much that he decides to do something about it.

A consultant suggests that he offer a 5% discount for immediate payment, but Davis is not sure if that will solve the problem. He also wonders how much this discount will cost him in the end.

Davis’ friend suggests to him that the offered discounts would be a bad idea because he knows of another business setup that used the discount policy, which ended in disaster. The company lost 5% of its revenue on those who would have paid promptly anyway, and those who did not intend to pay on time simply did not pay. This friend suggests decreasing the monthly installment but increasing the number of installments.

Davis also consulted his uncle, who has run several successful businesses, on this matter; the uncle suggests offering a 5% discount upfront on advance payments and this would give customers more incentive to pay. In addition, he suggests adding a penalty on defaulters who are behind on their payments by more than 30 days. If the defaulters do not pay within an additional 30 days, they could then be referred to a collection agency.

Based on the above scenario, provide your analysis in the following areas:

A critical analysis of the advice given by the consultant, Davis’ friend, and Davis’ uncle. Of the three, which one can assist Davis with his decision on how to collect the payments? Why?

An explanation of the relevant aspects of the advice given by the consultant, Davis’ friend, and Davis’ uncle.

An evaluation of the judgments, assumptions, pros, and cons for each piece of advice.

An assessment of the type of bias that applies to this scenario.

Propose at least two alternatives for Davis, with clear descriptions of their relative advantages as well as disadvantages.

An explanation of the impact of emotions—in terms of helping or hindering the ability to make rational decisions—while making a decision.

An analysis of at least two factors each that should be most important to Davis’ for making a decision.

Risk Analysis and Project Communication Plan

Project Implementation Plan:

(Project Communications Plan, Risk Analysis) for Building a Bridge

Write a 1,100-word Project Implementation Plan for the organization using the Learning Team Project Charter of “Building A Bridge”

The Project Implementation Plan must include the following sections:

Project Communications Plan: This plan will include the communications plan for project implementation.

Your plan should:

·  Describe the communication models, mediums, and methods that will be employed, and include a Data Flow Diagram.

·  Examine how the project inputs and outputs will be communicated, including performance reports and updates.

·  Describe the tools and techniques that will be used for the project, including information management systems and assets.

Risk Analysis Plan: This plan will include risk analysis and contingency planning for the project.

Your plan should:

·  Assess qualitative risk analysis inputs and outputs, including scope baseline, risk register, and environmental factors.

·  Evaluate risk analysis tools and techniques, and include sources of risk, a risk probability and impact assessment, and risk data quality and urgency assessments.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines (intro/closing paragraphs, etc). Tables may be used to format and organize the implementation plan. They can be included within the plan rather than at the end as normally required by APA guidelines. Words used in the tables/charts do not count against the word count.

Note: Do not just put a chart/table in your paper without explaining what it is the reader is looking at; in other words a table does not replace words used to discuss the topics, it enhances it.

Can someone do my Week 5 Assignment in Strategic Planning for Organization?

The final paper is a culmination of your research throughout the term. The overall purpose of the paper is to prepare a strategic plan to overcome the identified challenges and grow the business over the next three years.

Your strategic plan must include the following sections:

Week 1 – Section 1:

Below is a list of five large and significant organizations. Research each organization and select one as the topic for the final paper:

  • CSX – Transportation industry
  • JBS – Food industry
  • University of Arizona Global Campus (formerly known as Ashford University) – Higher education
  • Nokia – Technology industry
  • Simon Properties Group – Real Estate and Retail

Each organization is unique and has important strategic challenges. Once you select an organization, begin a detailed search to identify the history, industry, mission and vision, values and purpose, the leadership within, and potential competition.

Also, research and locate a news item (within the last 12 to 24 months) that is affecting the company and posing a challenge to its strategy. Challenges come in many different forms and could be positive or negative. You may discover leadership issues, legal or legislative issues, environmental challenges, human resource concerns, product design and research challenges, growth challenges, or possibly financial issues. Keep in mind that the identified challenge will be the core of the strategic review and recommendations developed throughout the paper.

Once your research is complete, prepare Section 1 of the paper. Section 1 must have at a minimum three full pages of content (excluding the cover and reference pages). You must include at a minimum three resources that provide qualified information related to the organization. Wikipedia is not a qualified resource. Use the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) document for additional guidance. Include the text as a scholarly resource to support theory and concepts related to strategy. During the construction of Section 1, be specific and refrain from making assumptions.  .

  • To complete this assignment, you must address the following:
  • Select an organization.
  • Identify the history, the industry, the mission and vision, the values and purpose, the leadership within, and potential competition.
  • Research and locate a new item that is affecting the company and posing a challenge to its strategy.

Week 2 – Section 2:

During Week 2, much focus is placed on various strategic thinking models and the impact upon the overall organizational strategic process. Now that you have a broad knowledge of your chosen organization, it is time to dig a bit deeper into the structure and the process by which decisions are made within the company. Define the specific organizational design and the governance structure of the chosen company. Support your choices with specific examples and research.

During Week 1, you researched and identified a specific problem or challenge the organization is experiencing. Describe the challenge and explain why it is a problem for the organization. Include how the problem is or has the potential to affect the strategies of the company. Be specific and support your findings.

Section 2 of the paper must have at a minimum two full pages of content (excluding the cover and reference pages). You must include at a minimum two scholarly resources (in addition to the text) that support specific strategies used to prepare the paper. Wikipedia is not a qualified resource. Use the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) document for additional guidance. Include the text as a scholarly resource to support theory and concepts related to strategy. During the construction of Section 2, be specific and refrain from assumption.

Week 3 – Section 3:

When an organization is faced with a challenge, or perhaps a new opportunity, care must be taken to properly diagnose the issues at hand so that proper actions are developed to accomplish the task in the most effective manner possible. During Week 2, you clearly defined a challenge for your chosen organization. During Week 3, you will develop a SWOT analysis targeting specifics of the organization that will impact the potential outcomes of the challenge.

Prior to building the SWOT analysis, review the following websites for ideas and guidance on developing proper questioning for the analysis:

Develop a SWOT analysis for the organization you are researching for your Final Paper. Define one or two findings for each section of the SWOT analysis that would be pertinent and specific to the outcome of the challenge identified during Week 2. For each section of the SWOT:

  • provide a definition for the section,
  • define a characteristic of the organization for the section, and use the defined questioning as the catalyst for the characteristic
  • and then, tell why that finding is important to resolving the challenge.

EXAMPLE: Using scholarly research, define the letter S in SWOT. Then, through research, define a strength of the organization that is vital to resolving the challenge defined during Week 2. Include the reasoning as to why the strength is important and relate your findings to your SWOT questions. Continue this process for each letter of the SWOT analysis.

Conclude this section of the paper with a paragraph briefly discussing the importance of the findings and how they will help reach a logical solution to the challenge and the possible type of strategy that best fits the process.

Section 3 of the paper must have at a minimum two full pages of content (excluding the cover and reference pages). You must include at a minimum of two scholarly resources (in addition to the text) that support specific strategies used to prepare the paper. Wikipedia is not a qualified resource. Use the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.) document for additional guidance. Include the text as a scholarly resource to support theory and concepts related to strategy. During the construction of Section 3, be specific and refrain from assumption.

Week 5 – Final Section and Requirements of the Capstone Paper:

The final section of the Capstone Paper must review the challenge and recommend a strategy for addressing the challenge based on research. Along with the strategy, define the potential financial or budgetary impact the strategy might present, including the additional costs that may arise if the problem or issue is not resolved effectively. Describe the metrics that the organization might consider for measuring the outcomes of the strategy utilized to resolve the challenge.

The entire paper will consist of the sections written during Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 5. It should begin with an executive summary, which is an abbreviated capture of the entire paper and as such should touch upon all major points while engaging the reader. The paper should close with a proper conclusion summarizing the concepts discussed in the paper. Remember, the summary is not a reiteration of the assignment requirements but a focus on the concepts and strategies related to the defined organizational challenge.

  • Your paper must be at a minimum of 10 pages in length (excluding the title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Writing Center. In addition, you must use at least five scholarly sources to support and defend theories, informational resources to define and describe the organization, and the course text for further support. Remember to incorporate information that you have learned from this course as well as your personal experience. Review feedback received on assignments submitted during Weeks 1, 2, and 3. All revisions, corrections, or recommendations must be included in the final paper.

The Capstone Paper
