Week 9 Assignment 4

Week 9 Assignment – Implementing the Plan

Overview

You have had the opportunity to examine three years’ worth of assessment data that reflects student performance on the annual reading assessment in grades 3 and 4. You identified strategies through targeted instruction with a goal of improving overall student literacy performance. You have presented your plan to your principal, Dr. Smith, parents, and other community stakeholders, and have received their support.

You now are required to select a strategy that you would like to pilot with your students. This strategy will be piloted at the beginning of the 3rd nine-week grading period. Your scores from the 3rd nine-week benchmark assessment will be used to help guide future decisions about the use of this strategy.

Requirements

Based on the information provided, please write a three-page paper addressing the following:

  • Identify and discuss the strategy that you have selected to pilot. Make sure that you reference at least one academic resource about the effectiveness of this strategy.

  • Based on the strategy selected, design and share one activity for a small reading group. Make sure to include how often you meet with the group (daily, twice a week, et cetera). Reference at least one academic resource that demonstrates the effectiveness of your selected activity.

  • Discuss your expected outcome after implementing the strategy. For example, do you expect to see an improvement in student fluency, improvement in understanding the main idea of a passage, et cetera? Make sure that you include a measurable goal as part of your expectations.

  • Use three sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides

Medical Office Management-Assignment 4

Part A: Kayla Christianson, CMA, has been employed six years by the cardiology practice of three physicians. She is a graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited school. Furthermore, Kayla received extensive hands-on training performing ECGs while doing her required externship.

Kayla has completed an ECG ordered by Dr. Hsu for Mrs. Warner, a 76-year-old patient. Dr. Hsu, Kayla’s boss, has telephoned her explaining that he was behind schedule doing rounds at the hospital. He asked her to do him a favor and interpret Mrs. Warner’s ECG, sign his name, and fax the report to Mrs. Warner’s referring internist who is expecting the results.

Provide detailed answers for each of the following questions. Your response should be two (2) pages in length.

· Given the scope of Kayla’s education, training, and years of experience as a CMA, would this favor fall within the AAMA guidelines of her responsibilities?

· Would any portion of Dr. Hsu’s request fall within the guidelines? If so, which portion(s)? Is an exception to these guidelines ever allowed?

· How should Kayla respond to Dr. Hsu?

Part B: For more than two years, medical assistant Linda Lewis had been employed by Drs. Norek and Klein, who are gerontologists. Also on staff are two registered nurses, a medical laboratory technician, and a medical social worker. The daughter of one of the doctor’s patients has just called the office. She is very distraught at the seemingly diminished capacity of her mother and insists on speaking to the doctor.

Linda explains that both physicians take only emergency calls during patient appointment hours, but that she will take a detailed message. This caller, however, suggests that not only should her call be considered an emergency, but that she will sue the doctor if the call is not handled accordingly.

Provide detailed answers for each of the following questions. Your response should be two (2) pages in length.

· What should Linda do immediately to diffuse the situation?

· Is this clearly a case when the call should be passed on to one of the registered nurses or the medical social worker?

· Is this a case when the physician should be called to the telephone because of the threat of an impending suit?

· How could Linda ascertain whether or not this is indeed an emergency? Is it up to her, as a medical assistant, to make such a determination?

· Because this is the patient’s daughter rather than the patient herself, does Linda have any reason to enter into a conversation with the caller? Could Linda be ethically bound by confidentiality not to admit the woman’s mother is a patient?

Big Data Risks and Rewards

When you wake in the morning, you may reach for your cell phone to reply to a few text or email messages that you missed overnight. On your drive to work, you may stop to refuel your car. Upon your arrival, you might swipe a key card at the door to gain entrance to the facility. And before finally reaching your workstation, you may stop by the cafeteria to purchase a coffee.

From the moment you wake, you are in fact a data-generation machine. Each use of your phone, every transaction you make using a debit or credit card, even your entrance to your place of work, creates data. It begs the question: How much data do you generate each day? Many studies have been conducted on this, and the numbers are staggering: Estimates suggest that nearly 1 million bytes of data are generated every second for every person on earth.

As the volume of data increases, information professionals have looked for ways to use big data—large, complex sets of data that require specialized approaches to use effectively. Big data has the potential for significant rewards—and significant risks—to healthcare. In this Discussion, you will consider these risks and rewards.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the web article Big Data Means Big Potential, Challenges for Nurse Execs.
  • Reflect on your own experience with complex health information access and management and consider potential challenges and risks you may have experienced or observed.

ASSIGNMENT:

I. Describe at least one potential benefit of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why.

II. Then, describe at least one potential challenge or risk of using big data as part of a clinical system and explain why.

III. Propose at least one strategy you have experienced, observed, or researched that may effectively mitigate the challenges or risks of using big data you described. Be specific and provide examples.

Short Paper: Analysis of Documentary Film RBG

Background

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the second woman appointed as a justice to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was appointed to the court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and served until her death in September 2020.  Ginsburg successfully fought against discrimination throughout her legal career.  She was a rarity in Harvard Law School: one of nine women among a class of 500 men. She excelled in her studies at Harvard but transferred to Columbia Law School when her husband took a position in New York. She graduated first in her class from Columbia Law in 1959.

As the director of the influential Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union during the 1970s, she successfully argued six significant cases before the Supreme Court. In those cases, she fought against gender discrimination for both men and women. She was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. And served as a judge on that court until her appointment to the Supreme Court.

Throughout her career, her strategy was to make slow but steady progress against discrimination. She attacked specific areas of discrimination and violations of women’s rights. She believed that it was the responsibility of Congress and state legislatures to enact major changes; it was the responsibility to tell the legislatures what they are can and cannot do. She believed social change should be the responsibility of the legislatures with guidance from the court system.

When the Supreme Court hears a case, the justices review the information and generally take manyl months to make a decision in the case.  As the cases are decided, the justices who are in the majority write a “majority” opinion explaining the court’s decision. Frequently, those who disagree with the majority write a dissenting opinion stating their opinion on the issue.

During her years on the Supreme Court, Ginsburg wrote many opinions either in support of the majority opinion or as a dissent of the majority’s decision. As more conservative Justices were appointed to the Supreme Court, Ginsburg has increasingly disagreed with the majority opinions. She often wrote dissenting opinions expressing her thoughts on a decision and became known as “The Dissenter.” Ginsburg was a formidable intellect and a powerful voice in the Supreme Court.

Instructions

The following is a 90 minute documentary film on the life and work of Justice Ginsburg. RBG was released in 2018. Watch the film then write an expository essay about the film answering the following prompts. Do not refer to any outside sources.

  • As a student, a lawyer and a judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg overcame many obstacles. How did her personal and early professional experiences lead to her focus on arguing sex discrimination cases?
  •  How did Justice Ginsburg’s dedication to ending discrimination continue in her role as Supreme Court Justice? Select one case that was discussed in the film to illustrate that your point.

The essay should be between 500 and 700 words, using correct grammar, punctuation, paragraph structure. Once again, do not refer to any outside sources for this assignment.

The rubric used in grading this assignment is available by clicking on the three vertical dots at the top of this page.

week 4 discussion

When a business considers investing in a new project, the decision must be carefully evaluated. Businesses should invest in projects that are expected to add value to the company. One method to determine the added value of a project is net present value (NPV) analysis. NVP analysis determines the present value of the benefits and costs of a project. If the project’s NPV is greater than $0, then the project is considered to add value to the company. For this discussion, you will practice calculating the added value of project using the NPV.

Prepare:

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

For the initial post, you will complete the NPV problem below. You will not be able to see other students’ posts until you post your initial post.

Problem:

A large auto company has just completed the research and development (R&D) on a new product, the Electrobicycle. The Electrobicycle is an electronic, climate-controlled bicycle with zero emissions. The R&D efforts focused on developing the capability to utilize electricity to power bicycles. Ultimately, the auto company expects Electrobicycles to be popular for most urban citizens due to convenience and low cost.

The R&D, which cost $3 million, is complete and paid for. The plant and equipment to mass produce the Electrobicycles will cost $2 million. This plant and equipment will be depreciated over 5 years using the straight-line method to zero book value ($400,000 per year). A working capital investment of $1 million will be needed at the beginning of the project. A working capital investment of $200,000 per year will be needed thereafter.

At the end of 5 years, the auto company believes there will be no more sales opportunities for Electrobicycles and will cease all production. Thus, at the end of the project, all working capital investments (the $1 million initial investment and the $200,000 per year) will be recovered at full value. The plant and equipment will be scrapped for a salvage value of $300,000 (after tax).

The company expects moderate sales in years 1 and 2, and then significant growth in each year thereafter as consumers adopt the Electrobicycles. Revenues and earnings will cease at the end of Year 5. The revenues, after-tax earnings, and cash flow for the 5-year life of the project are shown in this table.

Table 1

Note: n/a = not applicable

Calculate:

  • Determine the NPV for the Electrobicycle project. Use the annual project cash flow from the table above. For the required rate of return, use the percent value from your birthday date. For example, if your birthday falls on the 16th of the month, the required rate of return would be 16%.
    • For guidance, review Section 7.1 of the textbook, NPV Example: The Pizza Scooter Delivery Project Revisited.

Write:

In your post, include the following:

  • Calculate the NPV of the Electrobicycle project. Be sure to show your NPV calculations.
  • Explain, in your own words, why working capital investments are subtracted each year in the cash flows.
  • Explain, in your own words, the meaning of the required rate of return for the project.
  • Assume the auto company has a required rate of return of 15%. Based on the required rate of return you used for the Electrobicycles (based on your birthday date), is the Electrobicycle project more or less risky than the auto company? Explain your answer.
  • Based on your concluded NPV, should the company invest in this project to build Electrobicycles? Justify your answer.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts, and reply to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You must respond to two classmates who have completed different calculations than you. In your written responses to your classmates, address the following:

  • Confirm the calculations or explain a correction to the calculation in the initial post.
  • Compare how the required rate of return you used differs from your classmate’s rate of return.
  • Explain how the different rate of returns impacted the concluded NPV.
  • Explain why the salvage value is added to the cash flows in the final year of the project.

Leading Emergency Preparedness and Management

Describe one evidence-based strategy for leading emergency preparedness.

One evidence-based strategy for leading emergency preparedness is using effective training practices and policies and procedures that address various types of emergencies.  Providing regular training to prepare healthcare providers for emergencies is an effective method in emergency preparedness.  Education and training should be provided for what to do in case of epidemics and pandemics especially as we have navigated the unchartered waters of the COVID-19 pandemic (Dobalian et al., 2020).  This has driven home the need to expand emergency preparedness trainings beyond those of hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, and loss of electricity, just to name a few typical trainings offered.  Having the right policies and procedures in place direct staff to the appropriate way to provide care and services.  Communication plans are one type of policy and procedures that is necessary to effectively communicate needs during an emergency (Taschner et al., 2017).

Identify one evidence-based strategy for shaping healthcare system outcomes in disaster.

One method for shaping healthcare system outcomes in disaster is to have processes in place before the disaster ever happens.  This can be accomplished through partnerships with other agencies and resources within the same geographic region.  The World Health Organization (WHO) called for “partnering” to encourage and mobilize support from various world partners to address and support the global health system (Pereira et al., 2020). Partnerships should focus on organizing and facilitating regions cooperation for preparedness and response in the health care system, develop collaboration projects, identify, and develop metrics, engage partnerships among similar agencies and health systems, and collaborate with professional organizations and nongovernmental groups to strengthen preparedness and identify and secure resources (Berwick & Shine, 2020).

Examine the disaster risks for your local community. Identify two priority concerns. Describe the significance of these issues of concern.

One disaster risk of my local community is the possibility of tornadoes.  We live in tornado alley and as such we often get strong thunderstorms with the possibility of producing tornadoes.  Our local health care centers must have processes in place to handle damaging winds and tornadic action.  For instance, at the long-term care facility that I previously worked at, we had a process for announcing when severe weather was likely in our community.  This included announcing what type of severe weather threat had been announced by our local national weather service.  This provided a verbal prompt for staff members to take immediate action to prepare the facility and the residents for the type of severe weather we were likely to receive.  This might include providing blankets to the residents and moving them to an interior location to protect from flying debris in the event a tornado did strike.

Another disaster risk in my local community is the possibility of fire.  In the long-term care facility that I worked at we went through monthly fire drills and engaged the residents in the drills.  We would move them to a secure location behind a two-hour fire rated door, or to an exterior location if appropriate.  Alarms would sound and our pagers would go off to notify all the fire.  We were all instructed to treat each drill, regardless of the type, as an actual event.  Often, we did not know when a drill versus the real thing was going to occur.

Living in a very rural part of Nebraska, we had to have memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in place in the event of a disaster that our facility was not able to provide care of services for due to damage or lack of resources.  The surrounding communities all shared in written format the type of resources they had available to them if they were needed to help provide support services to another community.  This was all initiated by the Gage County Emergency Management Agency.

Identify one professional organization active in emergency preparedness or disaster response. Describe the services provided.

Gage County Emergency Management Agency is our professional organization in my rural community in Nebraska that is the main coordinator of the emergency.  Prior to the Gage County Emergency Management Agency arriving it is often the nurse in charge who is the initial coordinator of the emergency.  The Gage County Emergency Management Agency is a county agency authorized under the Nebraska Emergency Management Act.  The primary function of the agency includes planning, acting as liaison between emergency operations agencies, updates Local Emergency Operations Plan, maintains Emergency Operations Center, develop, and maintain hazard warning systems, training of severe weather spotters, coordinating county-wide hazardous materials, planning and reporting of response, conducting various trainings for public including nursing homes, schools, hospitals, and other organizations (Wiegand, 2010).

Algorithm discussion response – 2

Respond to the discussion about algorithms and their roles below using 150 words or more.

At  the most basic level, an algorithm is simply a set of step-by-step  instructions that we utilize to accomplish a specific task. We use  algorithms every single day in our day-to-day activities: Brushing our  teeth, getting dressed, driving to work, making dinner. These daily  tasks which we complete are all composed of a set of instructions that  starts with a certain action and ends with a certain action.

In  the realm of computer programming, algorithms are utilized to enhance  the efficiency, effectiveness, and functionality of the programs we  create. Two such types of algorithms are searching algorithms and  sorting algorithms.

Sorting  algorithms are designed to sort an array of objects into a specific  order. Searching algorithms are designed to compare the elements of an  array to find a particular value within an array of objects. Just a few  examples are search engines, the sorting of a business’ online item  inventory, and sorting/searching a database of students who attend a  university.

There  are multiple approaches which people have taken to solve the issue of  sorting and searching an array of items. Two frequently used searching  algorithms are linear search and binary search. Three frequently used  sorting algorithms are insertion sort, selection sort, and bubble sort.

Each  of these types of algorithms have both pros and cons associated with  them. The main properties that we want to keep an eye on when choosing  an algorithm are memory usage, maintainability, and time complexity. It  is always best to assess the situation and to use discretion when  choosing which algorithm that we want to implement into our program.

While this weeks topic highlighted the uncertainty of Big Data, the author identified the following as areas for future research.  Pick one of the following for your Research paper:

  • Additional study must be performed on the interactions between each big data characteristic, as they do not exist separately but naturally interact in the real world.
  • The scalability and efficacy of existing analytics techniques being applied to big data must be empirically examined.
  • New techniques and algorithms must be developed in ML and NLP to handle the real-time needs for decisions made based on enormous amounts of data.
  • More work is necessary on how to efficiently model uncertainty in ML and NLP, as well as how to represent uncertainty resulting from big data analytics.
  • Since the CI algorithms are able to find an approximate solution within a reasonable time, they have been used to tackle ML problems and uncertainty challenges in data analytics and process in recent years.

Your paper should meet these requirements:

  • Be approximately four to six pages in length, not including the required cover page and reference page.
  • Follow APA 7 guidelines. Your paper should include an introduction, a body with fully developed content, and a conclusion.
  • Support your answers with the readings from the course and at least two scholarly journal articles to support your positions, claims, and observations, in addition to your textbook. The UC Library is a great place to find resources.
  • Be clearly and well-written, concise, and logical, using excellent grammar and style techniques. You are being graded in part on the quality of your writing.

Best Practices in Student Self-Assessment

Students learning self-regulation strategies may not always recognize how those skills can be developed across content areas. Teachers can assist these students by providing them guidance on how to expand their skills. It is also helpful when teachers establish common processes that provide students with the feedback they need to assess their personal efforts and outcomes.

For this assignment, take on the role of an elementary level teacher at a K-5 school. Your principal has noticed how well you communicate learning objectives, guide students to set individual goals, and guide students to self-regulate and track their progress across multiple content areas. Because of your successes using these best practices, your principal has asked you to present best practices to fellow teachers across all content areas in an upcoming professional development.

Part 1: Best Practices Presentation

Create a 10-12 slide digital presentation to present to your teacher colleagues describing evidence-based instructional practices related to the self-regulation cycle, including goal setting, communicating learning objectives, monitoring student progress, providing effective feedback, and promoting self-regulation across multiple content areas.

The presentation should include the following components:

How to communicate the unit or lesson learning objectives to students, and how they will be measured on their performance of those objectives

How to encourage students’ motivation and engagement through the use of technology and other strategies, creating opportunities for students’ active participation in learning, self-motivation, and positive social interaction

How to continuously monitor student progress to provide effective, descriptive feedback across multiple content areas

How to work with students to collaboratively establish learning goals, identify quality work, and analyze their assessment results across multiple content areas

Title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Part 2: Reflection

In 250-500 words, summarize and examine the process of implementing best practices in encouraging self-regulation, setting goals, communicating objectives, monitoring progress, and providing effective feedback.

Consider the following questions:

How can you use students’ performance data to guide and engage students in thinking and learning?

How does the assessment data inform future instructional planning based on identified learning gaps and patterns?

How does planning for students to engage in the self-regulation cycle influence students’ confidence in learning independently and taking ownership of their academic progress?
