Sports, Media and the Economy

The article critique assignment investigates professional journals and current relatable information. You should locate an article(s) pertaining to how the media and/or economy have impacted sports.

The article(s) should be less than 3 years old.

Include the following components:

  • Title page: Include the assignment title, Columbia Southern University, and your name.
  • Introduction: Provide a brief Introduction of your article and connection to this chapter’s topic.
  • Article summary: Summarize the article. List the main points that the author has tried to establish (i.e., 1, 2, 3 or first, second, third). Typically, there will be three to five main points. If your article(s) summarizes a court case, you should discuss the following points: What provision of the law was at issue? Briefly state the facts of the case. What legal tests were applied? Were there any unusual elements in the case?
  • Article critique: Critique the article. You are to provide your reaction (insightful, critical, and logical) to the points that the author tried to make or an overall critique of the entire article. Be sure to state how this information has impacted the sports arena. A simple statement of agreement or disagreement is not sufficient. While you may make such a statement by way of introduction to your reaction, you must clearly and logically state the reasons for the position that you have taken.
  • Conclusion: Provide a brief conclusion wrapping up the elements of the article and how it relates to the chapter topic.
  • Reference page: Include a reference page that lists the source in proper APA format. If you also used content from our textbook, be sure to include this as a source in your reference page, as well. It is important that you provide the reader with enough information about your article so he or she will be able to locate the article.

Your article critique must be at least two pages in length, not counting title and reference pages. Follow APA Style when constructing this assignment, including a title page, and in-text citations and references for all sources that are used.

Managerial cost accounting

What is the difference between a direct and indirect cost? Variable versus fixed cost? What are the differences in accounting for inventoriable (product) versus period costs?

What are the relationships among financial, management, and cost accounting?

1-34 Budgeting, ethics, pharmaceutical company. Chris Jackson was recently promoted to Controller of Research and Development (R&D) for BrisCor, a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company that manufactures prescription drugs and nutritional supplements. The company’s total R&D cost for 2017 was expected (bud-geted) to be $5 billion. During the company’s midyear budget review, Chris realized that current R&D expen-ditures were already at $3.5 billion, nearly 40% above the midyear target. At this current rate of expenditure, the R&D division was on track to exceed its total year-end budget by $2 billion! In a meeting with CFO Ronald Meece later that day, Jackson delivered the bad news. Meece was both shocked and outraged that the R&D spending had gotten out of control. Meece wasn’t any more under-standing when Jackson revealed that the excess cost was entirely related to research and development of a new drug, Vyacon, which was expected to go to market next year. The new drug would result in large profits for BrisCor, if the product could be approved by year-end.

Meece had already announced his expectations of third-quarter earnings to Wall Street analysts. If the R&D expenditures weren’t reduced by the end of the third quarter, Meece was certain that the tar-gets he had announced publicly would be missed and the company’s stock price would tumble. Meece instructed Jackson to make up the budget shortfall by the end of the third quarter using “whatever means necessary.”

Jackson was new to the controller’s position and wanted to make sure that Meece’s orders were fol-lowed. Jackson came up with the following ideas for making the third-quarter budgeted targets: a. Stop all research and development efforts on the drug Vyacon until after year-end. This change would delay the drug going to market by at least 6 months. It is possible that in the meantime a BrisCor com-petitor could make it to market with a similar drug.

b. Sell off rights to the drug Martek. The company had not planned on doing this because, under current market conditions, it would get less than fair value. It would, however, result in a one-time gain that could offset the budget shortfall. Of course, all future profits from Martek would be lost.

c. Capitalize some of the company’s R&D expenditures, reducing R&D expense on the income state-ment. This transaction would not be in accordance with GAAP, but Jackson thought it was justifi-able because the Vyacon drug was going to market early next year. Jackson would argue that capitalizing R&D costs this year and expensing them next year would better match revenues and expenses.

Required

1. Referring to the “Standards of Ethical Behavior for Practitioners of Management Accounting and Financial Management,” Exhibit 1-7 (page 17), which of the preceding items (a–c) are acceptable to use? Which are unacceptable?

2. What would you recommend Jackson do?

2-33 Inventoriable costs versus period costs. Each of the following cost items pertains to one of these companies: Best Buy (a merchandising-sector company), KitchenAid (a manufacturing-sector company), and HughesNet (a service-sector company): a. Cost of phones and computers available for sale in Best Buy’s electronics department b. Electricity used to provide lighting for assembly-line workers at a KitchenAid manufacturing plant c. Depreciation on HughesNet satellite equipment used to provide its services d. Electricity used to provide lighting for Best Buy’s store aisles e. Wages for personnel responsible for quality testing of the KitchenAid products during the assembly process

f. Salaries of Best Buy’s marketing personnel planning local-newspaper advertising campaigns g. Perrier mineral water purchased by HughesNet for consumption by its software engineers h. Salaries of HughesNet area sales managers i. Depreciation on vehicles used to transport KitchenAid products to retail stores

Required

1. Distinguish between manufacturing-, merchandising-, and service-sector companies. 2. Distinguish between inventoriable costs and period costs. 3. Classify each of the cost items (a–i) as an inventoriable cost or a period cost. Explain your answers.

2-34 Computing cost of goods purchased and cost of goods sold. The following data are for Marvin Department Store. The account balances (in thousands) are for 2017.

Marketing, distribution, and customer-service costs                    37,000

Merchandise inventory, January 1, 2017                                            27,000

 Utilities                                                                                                                      17,000

General and administrative costs                                                               43,000

Merchandise inventory, December 31, 2017                                        34,000

 Purchases                                                                                                                  155,000

Miscellaneous costs                                                                                             4,000

Transportation-in                                                                                                    7,000

Purchase returns and allowances                                                                   4,000

Purchase discounts                                                                                                  6,000

 Revenues                                                                                                                 280,000

Required

1. Compute (a) the cost of goods purchased and (b) the cost of goods sold.

2. Prepare the income statement for 2017.

Literature Review/ Ways to Prevent the Development of Cancer

Introduce some of the in-text references with introductory phrases.

This section provides a review of different sources relating to the topic of study with the aim of determining the gaps that have not been researched on by other scholars. In determining the relevance of the sources to the prevention of cancer, the relationship between nutrition and cancer either in causal perspectives and in protective perspectives will be assessed. Through a thorough analysis of the sources, a research gap will be determined through which this study aims at focusing on.

There is a high correlation between nutrition practices and colorectal cancer where nutrition plays a big part in both the protective role and in causal role. There are various nutrients that are associated with causing colon cancer which includes fat from red and processed meats. In preventing the development of the cancer, dietary rich in fruits and vegetables are recommended (Thanikachalam, 2019).

Nutrition practices have a great role in the development of breast cancer where dietary patterns featured with high intake of unrefined vegetables, cereals, nuts improve survival after diagnosis of breast cancer. Also, low consumption of red meat and saturated fatty acids increases chances of survival after diagnosis of the cancer (De, 2019).

Selenium can be used in preventing the development of cancer in the first place but when supplemented with other nutrients such as Vitamin E. Selenium is a mineral which plays an important role in the protection of the body against damages resulted from oxidative stress. It is also important in metabolism and thyroid function. Selenium is found in foods such as seafoods, Brazil nuts and organ meats in large quantities or other foods such as cereals and muscle meats though in smaller quantities (Vinceti, 2018).

Based in an assessment conducted by the use of the Scored-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), nutritional practice of an individual has a direct relationship to their risk of developing a given type of cancer. Diets which cause nutritional conditions such as obesity increases the risk of the obese individuals in developing many types of cancer (Jager-Wittenaar, 2017).

Nutritional practices such as the use of the traditional Mediterranean diet is linked with improvement of life quality and longevity through reduction of the risk of most common pathologies such as cancer (Battino, 2019).

Based on the literature review of the existing research work on the relationship between nutrition and the development of cancer, it is evident that there is a need to establish the role of a complete balanced diet on the development of cancer. The study will determine the link between the two variables in the process of supporting ways in which cancer can be prevented through a nutrition practice of using a balanced diet.

W11D1 349 – compliance auditing fundamentals

I need 4 clear and quality references.

These references need to be current and website based with an author who is current (2008-2018). I need to be able to go to a website and see that actual work.

Hints these are current subject related cited references.

No ebooks.

No google books

No paid sites for access.

No make believe books.

****Must be current and visible references*****

Will not accept anything but true references.

References mean the world to me and they should to you if you want to accept my money.

Again all references must be cited!!!!!! All references must be made clear and precise websites I can go and look up the information.

I need actual articles!!! Articles and authors I can references and read about the topic! Please do not submit to me a reference page that does not reference actual authors and actual websites with valuable information.

No google books or Wiki. I need media articles to references and see. Please understand this requirement.

Also this needs to follow APA style and be in 12 Times.

here is the example of APA:

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/18/

Also I just need the document in a clear well written single spaced. I will do the editing no need to send cover page or double space. I will do that through my review.

Thank you and see the topics below that need addressed.

  • Share two new insights about compliance auditing fundamentals you have discovered from this course.
  • Take a position on whether or not this type of course is essential for every IT professional. Justify your response.

Analyze Human Resource considerations to business decision making.

Review the SHRM case, “Designing a Pay Structure.”

You will prepare the SHRM case analysis on “Designing a Pay Structure,” which consists of your completion of Tasks A–J that simulate the creation of a compensation system for an organization in meeting its goals and supporting its mission. In your analysis, respond to the following tasks found in the case study by using Excel.

Your case analysis should consist of:

  • Task A: Create a complete job description for the benefits manager position using O*NET.
  • Task B: Calculate the job evaluation points for the administrative assistant, payroll assistant, operational analyst, and benefits manager jobs. Provide a rationale for assigning specific degrees to the various jobs.
  • Task C: If there were any outliers (i.e., extreme data points) in the data, what would you recommend doing with them? From this point forward, assume no extreme data points exist in the dataset.
  • Task D: Conduct a simple regression in Excel to create a market pay line by entering the job evaluation points (on the X axis) and the respective weighted average market base pay (on the Y axis) for each benchmark job.
  • Task E: What is your R squared (variance explained)? Is it sufficient to proceed?
  • Task F: Calculate the predicted base pay for each benchmark job.
  • Task G: Because your company wants to lead in base pay by 3%, adjust the predicted pay rates to determine the base pay rate you will offer for each benchmark job.
  • Task H: Create pay grades by combining any benchmark jobs that are substantially comparable for pay purposes. Clearly label your pay grades and explain why you combined any benchmark jobs to form a grade.
  • Task I: Use your answer to Task H to determine the pay range (i.e., minimum and maximum) for each pay grade.
  • Task J: Given the pay structure you have generated, consider the following: Does this pay structure make good business sense? Do you think it is consistent with the organization’s business strategy? What are the implications of this pay structure for other HR systems, such as retention and recruiting?
  • Your analysis of this case and your written submission should reflect an understanding of the critical issues of the case, integrating the material covered in the text, and present concise and well-reasoned justifications for the stance that you take. You are to complete this case analysis using Excel in a spreadsheet analysis format.

You may discuss your case analysis assignment with the class, but you must submit your own original work.

Case analysis tips: Avoid common errors in case analyses, such as:

  • Focusing too heavily on minor issues.
  • Lamenting because of insufficient data in the case and ignoring creative alternatives.
  • Rehashing of case data — you should assume the reader knows the case.
  • Not appropriately evaluating the quality of the case’s data.
  • Obscuring the quantitative analysis or making it difficult to understand.

Assessment Checklist:

  • Create job descriptions for multiple jobs.
  • Conduct a regression analysis that results in a market pay line that supports the validity of the pay ranges in the case study.
  • Calculate the predicted base pay for each benchmark job.
  • Create pay grades by combining any benchmark jobs that are substantially comparable for pay purposes.
  • This Assessment should be a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
  • This Assessment should be a minimum of 10–15 slides, with analysis notes, in addition to the title and reference slides.
  • Respond to the questions in a thorough manner, providing specific examples of concepts, topics, definitions, and other elements asked for in the questions. Your paper should be highly organized, logical, and focused.
  • Your analysis must be written in Standard English and demonstrate exceptional content, organization, style, and grammar and mechanics.
  • Your analysis should provide a clearly established and sustained viewpoint and purpose.
  • Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful.
  • A separate slide at the end of your spreadsheet analysis should contain a list of references, in APA format. Use your textbook, the Library, and the internet for research.
  • Be sure to cite both in-text and reference list citations where appropriate and reference all sources. Your sources and content should follow proper APA citation style. Review the writing resources for APA formatting and citation found in Academic Tools. Additional writing resources can be found within the Academic Success Center.

HW4: Rock Report

Learning Goals:

  • Describe an unfamiliar igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rock using terms learned in this class

Resource: HW4: Rock ReportPreview the document

Submission: via Canvas Quiz (next page)

Instructions: Complete the homework. You may talk among yourselves about different strategies, but you may NOT copy answers from other students (this won’t help you anyway since each student will be researching a different rock). Make sure everything you write is in your own words, and be careful to cite any sources for information. DO NOT START THE QUIZ UNTIL YOU’VE FINISHED YOUR REPORT!

This is an individual homework that shouldn’t require too much of your time.. But it’s important to follow these rules:

  • First, and most important, everything you write must be in your own words. You may not copy and paste material from other sources (of course not!). You may not use quotation marks either to get around this restriction. Every word must be your own.
  • I know that for some students in this class English is not your first language. I am totally in awe of your ability to take a class in English (if I had to take a class in one of my foreign languages . . . let’s just say it wouldn’t go well). But just because your English isn’t perfect doesn’t give you the right to copy/paste or use other people’s words. I do not care if you make grammatical or stylistic mistakes–I’m only interested in the content. Resist the temptation to “improve” your report by borrowing phrases and sentences from a native-English source.
  • You will need to do some research, but you should use as a foundation what you’ve learned about rocks from your readings. This means that if you have a metamorphic rock, for example, that you apply what you’ve learned about metamorphic rocks. Do not “re-learn” everything about metamorphic rocks by searching online–use the concepts and language that is presented in the readings.
  • As directed in the instructions, you should underline and define every word that you had to learn. These definitions must be in your own words and must not include other words that are unfamiliar (unless you define them too). For example, if you’re unfamiliar with the rock “syenite” (which is to be expected!), then you can’t simply describe it as an “undersaturated igneous rock” because you don’t know what “undersaturated” means either (why would you?!?). Going back to the first point, every word must be your own and you must understand it.
  • Look at the example. I am not expecting a report much longer than this (a single paragraph), but it must include a description of all minerals found in the rock along with the mineral’s composition and structure (e.g., if it’s a silicate I want to know if it’s a layer silicate or framework silicate or whatever). Also note that there are other terms used to describe silicates like “tektosilicates” and “phyllosilicates” that are in common use–these are alternate words for the terms I used, and if you choose to use them you should define them like any other unfamiliar word. But, honestly, it would be more useful to you to simply use the terms I used to describe these minerals (e.g., island silicates, single-chains, double-chains, etc.).
  • Don’t leave it to the last minute and feel free to contact me or Matt if you need help.
