You will gather evidence on present a well-reasoned argument or debatable issue. The goal of an argumentative paper is to show that your perspective is valid. You are to form reasons, draw conclusions and apply them to your findings. The purpose is not to completely prove your point, but to convince readers, with your evidence, that your argument or position has merit.

You will be evaluated according to your topic selection, thesis and outline, annotated bibliography, and final paper delivered in proper format as follows:

Week 5: Debating Abortion Scenario and Reflection

Reflections: With the reflections: Make sure to discuss the key points of the argument by both presenters in the scenario. Discuss what side you take on the argument, then discuss the strong points the other side makes as well. Present evidence for both pro and con arguments. Then follow-up with an ethical theory on to support how your ethical stance is valid. Ethical theories include- Kant, Act Utilitarianism, Rule Utilitarianism, Care Ethics, Virtue Ethics, and social contract. 1 page.

In the scenario assignments below, you are asked to reflect on responses to the presented scenario. It should not just be writing down your first reaction or what you already know.Reflection involves critical thinking, which means rethinking your existing knowledge and previously held opinions in light of what we have learned about theories of ethics, logic, and reasoning. You will need to question your current knowledge and beliefs.Discuss the main points of the debate, what stance you take, support that stance, and discuss the opposing argument. Also discuss an ethical theory that would apply to defend your view.To complete each scenario assignment:

  1. Complete the entire scenario.
  2. Compose your reflection in a Word document and be sure to address, at a minimum, the following questions:
    • Why do you feel the way you do about the issue presented?
    • Of the four responses offered in the scenario, which do you think is the most ethical and why?
  3. Support your conclusions with evidence and specific examples from the textbook, including a minimum of one theory of ethics to defend your stance.
  4. Your reflection must be 1-2 pages in length and follow APA formatting and citation guidelines as appropriate UPDATED 7TH APA FORMAT THROUGHOUT PAPER

LET’S PRACTICE:  Identify the sample, the target, and the property.  Then say whether the argument is an inductive generalization or an analogical argument.  HINTS or a “re-cap” are included below the 4 items.

  1. Mickey and Minnie both have legs, so Pluto does, too.

              Sample:

              Target:

              Property:

              Argument type:

  1. Since the US sides with Israel over Jerusalem as its capitol, you can bet it will side with Israel if Israel rejects a two-state solution.

              Sample:

              Target:

              Property:

              Argument type:

  1. The US has made it clear that it will always side with Israel, since it even supports their claim that Jerusalem is its capitol.

              Sample:

              Target:

              Property:

              Argument type:

  1. We’ll have a good time at that club. After all, we’ve had a good time the last three times we went there!

              Sample:

              Target:

              Property:

              Argument type:

_______________________________________________________________________

HINTS and Partial RE-CAP:

Sample – always in P

Property – usually explicitly in both P & C, but always implied

Target – always in C

INDUCTIVE GENERALIZATIONS (also called Enumerative Induction or Inductive Enumeration) – part-to-whole

*The sample is a subset of the target class

It is going to be hot on Monday.  So, it is going to be hot all week.

Here, the sample is Monday, the target is all week, and the property is being hot.  It is an inductive generalization because Monday is a part of the week.

ANALOGICAL ARGUMENTS

*The sample is not a subset of the target item (the sample and target are “terms of the comparison,” or “analogues”)

It is going to be hot on Monday.  So, it is going to be hot on Tuesday.

Here, the sample is Monday, the target is Tuesday, and the property being hot.  It is an analogical argument because the sample is not included in the target; that is, Monday is not a part of Tuesday.

KEY:  Rather than thinking of inductive reasoning as moving from the “smaller to the greater” (which is not always the case), it is better to think of it as “moving from what is known, to what is unknown.”  It is because of this feature of inductive reasoning, that we think of it as (potentially) generating knowledge.  Just remember the problem of induction, and that a “gap” always exists!

______________________________________________________________________________

Information that may be helpful:

 Sample and Target

The evidence in all inductive arguments is contained in the premises, and the evidence itself is called our sample.  Whatever we are saying is true of our sample, is called the feature (or property) in question.  It is usually found in both the premise(s) and the conclusion.  In the conclusion we talk about something new, or expand our knowledge (hopefully, if it is in fact a good inductive argument).  This “new thing” in the conclusion is called the target:

Enumerative Induction Example:

P: I’ve met sixteen hippies, and they were all cool people.

C: All hippies are cool people.

Here, “sixteen hippies” is the sample, “all hippies” is the target, and “cool people” is the feature.  Enumerative arguments move from part to whole.

Inductive Syllogism Example:

P1: Most students have part-time jobs.

P2: Deshaun is a student.

C: Deshaun has a part-time job.

Here, “most students” is the sample, “Deshaun” is the target, and “having a part-time job” is the feature.  Inductive syllogisms move from whole to part.

Analogical Arguments

Analogical arguments are inductive arguments.  They are extremely common and we use them frequently in daily life.  Analogical arguments all contain claims which assert that because two things are alike in certain respects, they are alike in an additional respect.

Unlike enumerative and inductive syllogisms, in analogical inductive arguments the sample is not a subset of the target item (the sample and target are “terms of the comparison,” or “analogues”).  Consider this analogical inductive argument:

It is going to be hot on Monday. Monday is a day of the week, but so is Tuesday. So, it is going to be hot on Tuesday.

Here, the sample is Monday, the target is Tuesday, and the property is being hot.  The “analogs” are Monday and Tuesday, respectively. It is an analogical argument because the sample is not included in the target; that is, Monday is not a part of Tuesday.  If you compare this to the hippie argument above, you can see there that the sixteen hippies mentioned in the sample is included in “all hippies” (the target).  Analogical reasoning moves from part to part.

Here are three more analogical arguments:

  • “The experiment was successful on lab rats, so it will be successful on human beings.”
  • “Killing babies is immoral, and babies and fetuses are both potential adult human beings, so killing fetuses is immoral.”
  • “Lions must eat meat, and lions and human beings are both mammals, so human beings must eat meat.”

Summary Reflection on Inductive Reasoning

Rather than thinking of inductive reasoning as moving from the “smaller to the greater” (which is not always the case, as we have now seen), it is better to think of them as “moving from what is known, to what is unknown.”  It is because of this feature of inductive reasoning that we think of it as (potentially) generating knowledge. It doesn’t always, and there are limitations to this kind of knowledge, but it works well in much of our everyday decision-making.

Notice above that the terms of the analogies must be stressed by the inductive reasoner, since all of the arguments omit differences that necessarily exist between the sample and the target.  Differences must exist, since if one thing is being compared to another, they cannot be the same thing.  Be wary of the differences.  It is often unwise to uncritically accept the conclusions of analogical arguments.

IV PowerPoint Presentation

For this assignment, you will discuss what you have learned in Unit III and Unit IV by creating a 12-slide PowerPoint presentation that addresses the case studies below. Based on your reading of the case study “Is Business Ready for Wearable Computers?”

  • Discuss at least three examples of wearable technology.
  • Discuss how wearable technology could change the way the company you work for or a company you are familiar with conducts business, and provide an example.
  • Discuss at least one advantage and one disadvantage to wearable technology.
  • Discuss how business intelligence (BI) systems are used for reporting and data analytics.

Based on your reading of the case study “How Reliable Is Big Data?”

  • Explain the term big data in your own words.
  • Discuss how the music service Spotify used big data to better serve its customers.
  • Discuss how New York City used big data to reduce crime rates.
  • Discuss at least one ethical or security issue that big data can pose to individuals.

Based on your reading of the case study “Google, Apple, and Facebook Battle for Your Internet Experience”

  • Explain what is meant by mobile technology.
  • Discuss how telecommunications and mobile technology networks are vital to companies and how they are fundamentally changing organizational strategies.
  • Discuss the mobile strategy used by Google, Apple, and Facebook.
  • Discuss at least two challenges posed by the Internet and networking.

Based on your reading of the case study “How Secure Is the Cloud?”

  • Discuss at least two security threats to cloud data.
  • What should companies do to protect cloud data?
  • Discuss why both the company and the cloud vendor are responsible for security.
  • Discuss at least one security control that companies can use to increase security.
  • Explain why data management has a tremendous impact on an organization’s survival.

In formatting your PowerPoint presentation, do not use the question-and-answer format; instead, use bullets, graphs, and/or charts in your slides to identify important points, and then discuss those points in the speaker notes of each slide. Your PowerPoint presentation must be at at least 12 slides in length (not counting the title and reference slides). You are required to use a minimum of three peer-reviewed, academic sources that are no more than 5 years old (one may be your textbook). All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; all paraphrased material must have accompanying in-text citations. One source must be from the CSU Online Library.

Victimology: Human Trafficking

Topic: Human Trafficking, You will then investigate (a) who are the victims of this crime, (b) how prevalent is this crime, (c) what are the causes of this crime, (d) in what ways do victims contribute to the crime, (e) methods of prevention, (f) resources available to assist victims of this crime, and (g) the student’s opinion of any needed changes in resources, laws, sentencing, etc. related to this crime.

Please be sure that you turn in your topic for approval in Week One. If your topic has not been approved prior to you turning in your final paper, there will be a five-point deduction off of the final paper.

The report should be at least 8-10 pages (not including the Title page and Reference page), typed in Microsoft Word, using 12-point font in Times New Roman font, in APA format.  Please ensure that you utilize sources that are not only relevant to your material, but that are also verified as credible, at least one must be a peer reviewed resource. Be careful of what you find on the internet as not all sources are credible (this includes Google Scholar).

Please be sure to check out the online library and attempt to select sources through there before searching anywhere else.  This will ensure the validity of your citations. Also, you may want to run your paper through safe assign to check it for any possible plagiarism issues before submitting your final version. Remember that you may also use the OWL lab as a resource to help improve your paper before submitting it for a grade; the OWL usually takes 24-48 hours to return your work so plan accordingly so that you can make any recommended changes and submit your work by 11:59 a.m. EST on Saturday at the end of Week 3.
