Assessment: Minimizing Social Influence in Political Debates

Assessment Instructions—Must use attached template for the assessment

Preparation

Use the Capella Library and the Internet to research theories of social psychology and strategies for minimizing social influence in political debates. Some suggestions for keyword searches include (but are not limited to): debate format analysis; moderator influence; the impact of social and mainstream media; self-presentation and visual influence; minimizing bias; presentation style, and voter perception.

The authentic deliverable for this assessment is a proposal with an executive summary. There are many resources on the Internet and free templates or examples, if you choose to use one as a guide for completing this assessment. This assessment is also an exercise in disciplined professional writing. Carefully parsing down information to maximize conveyance of knowledge with the minimum of space is as rigorous as writing an academic paper.

Instructions

Assume the role described in the following scenario as you complete this assessment.

Scenario

You are a political consultant to a “better government” citizen group, such as the League of Women Voters. You have been hired to develop guidelines for holding neutral and fair public town hall–style debates, covered by social and mainstream media, to ensure that the voters make up their own minds as free of social influence as possible.

Deliverable

Develop a proposal of research-based guidelines for neutral and fair public debates and media coverage. The first part of the proposal is an executive summary, which should be about one page in length.

The Executive Summary

Writing must be succinct, clear, and comprehensible to a layperson. The purpose of the executive summary is to:

· Provide a concise analysis of the problem.

· Explain the rationale.

· Report the main conclusions.

The first two subheadings constitute the executive summary portion of your proposal:

Analysis of the Issue: Social Influence and Politics

· Analyze how social psychology theory can be applied to identify and reduce sources of social influence in a debate setting.

o Write an introductory paragraph or two.

Analysis of the Issue: Perception and Bias

· Assess how social context (relationships, groups, and culture) influences perception and behavior in a debate setting.

o Write an explanatory paragraph or two.

Proposed Guidelines

· Write research-based guidelines for fair public debates and media coverage.

o Use subheadings to organize content.

o Use bullet points and phrases for main points, in addition to short, succinct paragraphs.

o Include a visual, such as a graph, table, or chart to succinctly convey information, if you choose.

Guidelines for Fair Public Debate

· Integrate principles of social psychology and research to develop guidelines for fair public debate.

o Consider the following guiding questions as you develop the guidelines.

o How does the format affect voter perception?

o How can a moderator influence voter perception?

o How can social and mainstream media be managed in a debate for balance?

o Consider the implications of visuals and voter perception.

o What participant behaviors would you prohibit?

o How do you propose to manage the behavior of the audience?

References

· Support positions with references from scholarly and professional literature.

o Support each guideline with at least one reference using APA format and style.

Additional Requirements

· Length: Maximum length is 3–4 pages.

· References: Your references may include both scholarly literature and practitioner sources. Support each guideline with at least one current reference.

· Written communication: Write clearly and logically, with correct use of spelling, grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and APA format and style.

Nervous System only please

Assignment: Assessing and Treating Patients With Bipolar Disorder/NURS 6630: Psychopharmalogical Approaches to Treat Psychopathology

Bipolar disorder is a unique disorder that causes shifts in mood and energy, which results in depression and mania for patients. Proper diagnosis of this disorder is often a challenge for two reasons: 1) patients often present as depressive or manic but may have both; and 2) many symptoms of bipolar disorder are similar to other disorders. Misdiagnosis is common, making it essential for you to have a deep understanding of the disorder’s pathophysiology. For this Assignment, as you examine the patient case study in this week’s Learning Resources, consider how you might assess and treat patients presenting with bipolar disorder.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the Medication Resources indicated for this week.
  • Reflect on the psychopharmacologic treatments you might recommend for the assessment and treatment of patients requiring bipolar therapy.

The Assignment: 5 pages

Examine Case Study: An Asian American Woman. Diagnosis-Bipolar Disorder. You will be asked to make three decisions concerning the medication to prescribe to this patient. Be sure to consider factors that might impact the patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.

At each decision point, you should evaluate all options before selecting your decision and moving throughout the exercise. Before you make your decision, make sure that you have researched each option and that you evaluate the decision that you will select. Be sure to research each option using the primary literature.

Introduction to the case (1 page)

  • Briefly explain and summarize the case for this Assignment. Be sure to include the specific patient factors that may impact your decision making when prescribing medication for this patient.

Final Presentation

prior to beginning this assignment, please review your written assignments and required readings and resources in Weeks 1 through 6.

The Final Presentation will culminate this week’s research and incorporate work from the previous five weeks of the course. You will create a screencast (screen recording) of an eight- to 12-slide PowerPoint presentation that will include the points listed below along with components highlighted in your Week 1 assignment’s proposal and appropriate peer-review feedback from Weeks 2 and 5, as well as your Week 2 through 5 written assignments. You are to create your presentation as though you were presenting the elements to a group for review. Note: You will use a screencasting video creation tool of your choice which will record your voice and the presentation on your computer screen (see the instructions below). If you run into a problem using a screencasting tool, please contact your instructor for alternative instructions.

In your Final Presentation, you should

  • Present the needs that were highlighted within your selected case study as it applies to your “ABC Health Care” organization.
  • Propose a risk analysis strategy on how organizational needs were met in accordance with applicable laws and standards.
  • Assess the essential components of health care decision making models, emphasizing the system development life cycle (SDLC).
  • Determine the impact technology has on cultural factors in health care provisions and decision-making.
  • Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of key players in strategic planning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Assess enterprise-wide data’s role in health information governance.
  • Compare and contrast the roles of technology and enterprise-wide information as it relates to data governance.
  • Summarize best practices and policies as they relate to data governance, information exchange, and technical and structural interoperability.
  • Explain the economic impact of your proposed system acquisition.
  • Formulate and provide answers to three questions that you feel would be appropriate for the board to ask.

Part 1: Creating the PowerPoint

Your PowerPoint presentation should be eight to 12 slides in length. Add speaker’s notes (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to the bottom of each slide for ease of narration (as your video script) and to provide accessible content to students with accessibility needs. (See the Final Presentation section below for specific details that need to be included).

Presenting engaging multimedia content also improves learner retention of information. You may wish to include visual enhancements in your presentation. These may include appropriate images, a consistent font, appropriate animations, and transitions from content piece-to-content piece and slide-to-slide. (Images should be cited in APA format as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center guide to Tables, Images, & Appendices (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Students may wish to use the Where to Get Free (and Legal) Images (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. guide for assistance with accessing freely available public domain and/or Creative Commons licensed images.) It is recommended that you access Garr Reynolds Top Ten Slide Tips (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Simple Rules for Better PowerPoint Presentations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., which provide useful assistance with creating successful PowerPoint presentations.

Part 2: Creating the Screen Recording using any screencasting platform your wish.

Quickstart guides are provided for Screencast-O-Matic and Jing platforms for video recording your PowerPoint presentation on your computer screen, but you are welcome to use any of the many free screen recording platforms available. For guidance on recording your screen using Jing, access the Jing Tutorial (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. pages. For guidance on using Screencast-O-Matic, access the Screencast-O-Matic Tutorial (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. pages. Quickstart guides for Screencast-O-MaticPreview the document and JingPreview the document are also provided for your convenience. Be sure to copy and paste the screencast URL to the top of your speakers notes on slide one and at the bottom of the reference slide in your PowerPoint presentation.

When creating a screencast of your presentation,

  • Include a title for your presentation in the description box when you publish your screencast.
  • Limit your presentation to between 8 and 12 minutes.
  • It is highly recommended that you practice reading through your script prior to beginning the screencast capture. Do not read your slides. The slides should provide general talking points.
  • The speaker notes for the presentation comprise your script and also make your PowerPoint accessible.
  • Copy and paste the screencast URL to the top of your speakers notes and at the bottom of the reference slide in your PowerPoint presentation prior to submitting your PowerPoint in the assignment drop box.
  • All sources used within the presentation must be cited properly within the slides and included on the required reference slide, which will be the last slide of the presentation.
  • Due to the time limit of your presentation, you are not required to speak or read through the reference slide. However, all sources used within the PowerPoint must be cited properly with in-text citations where necessary and a separate final reference slide.

Part 3: Submit your PowerPoint presentation into Waypoint for grading.

BUS 637 WEEK 5 ASSIGNMENT

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read chapters 4 and 6 and watch the following video McDonald’s Segmentation, Targeting and Positioning (Links to an external site.).

Create an assignment focused on segmenting, targeting, and positioning. The assignment evaluates a formal approach to segmenting, targeting, and positioning as a foundational marketing activity, compared to an informal approach that combines a small business launch along with a feedback loop focused on segmenting, targeting, and positioning.

Before creating your assignment, do the following:

  • Execute the Chapter 4 Mini Sim on segmentation, targeting, and positioning through the link, MyLab Entrepreneurship All Assignments. Click on “Week 5 – Assignment” to complete the Chapter 4 Mini Sim in MyLab.

A formal approach to segmenting, targeting, and positioning is structured and takes time, money, and staff to execute. A more informal approach to the process requires a general view of the market that is developed concurrent with the business launch. Effectively, the entrepreneur manages a feedback loop concurrent with business activities and tunes segmenting, targeting, and positioning activities as the business progresses.

In your paper,

  • Identify resources the entrepreneur requires to effect formal segmenting, targeting, and positioning.
  • Reflect on resources the entrepreneur requires to effect informal segmenting, targeting, and positioning.
  • Evaluate approaches that resonate and addresses why they resonate.

Methodology and Rationale Instructions

Prompt: In 100-300 words describe a hypothetical methodology for studying your research topic. In the same document, in 250-350 words, create a rationale to a scholarly audience of experts on your topic justifying studying your proposed research question to your audience.

Requirements:

1.  Do not use first or second person in the rationale, but you may use first person in the methodology.

2.  In addition to a specific explanation of how you will test your research question, your methodology should explain how you will analyze the data and how you would recognize a significant result. Use the following outline to build your methodology paragraph. Generally, 1-2 sentences will be enough for each item:

a.  Explain who or what your sample is and how you will locate it.

b.  Describe your independent variable’s process.

c.  Describe how you will collect and observe your data.

d.  Describe how you will analyze your data.

e.  Describe what a significant result would look like.

3.  In your rationale, the question you are answering is this: Why is your research proposal a good way to study this problem, and why should we fund this research? Pretend you are convincing a board of academics in this field that your research proposal is worth financial support. Remember: your audience is already experts in the field, so you do not need to explain basic principles.

4.  Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation should be flawless. Visit the Liberty University writing centers if you want extra help: https://www.liberty.edu/academics/casas/academicsuccess/index.cfm?PID=38382

5.  Use APA formatting; no abstract or title page is required, but do include a reference page if you use sources.

Additional Suggestions for Methodology:

1.  Look up methodologies in the journal articles you have been researching and use those as models and guides.

2.  Everyone’s methodology will look a little bit different. Your methodology may include an experiment with two groups getting different treatments, one group that gets tested before and after a treatment, or a large group of people filling out a survey. Or you may be suggesting a research proposal that involves reading literature and analyzing it.

3.  Remember that simply reading textbooks or other journal articles is just secondary research. A good methodology does primary research and finds new information rather than just compiling old information.

4.  Whatever you do, make sure that your results cannot be brought into question. For instance, if you wanted to test the effects of a drug on humans and did not clarify what humans, I might wonder if your results would be skewed because more or fewer men or women could be in different experimental groups than in the others. Be specific about your demographics or aspects of your methodology.

5.  Or if you were doing a study of postmodern literature but did not say when the postmodern era began, you would get very different results based on your cutoff date.

6.  You can be creative with your methodology, but you must also be skeptical. Would you have faith in your methods to return a reliable result?

7.  Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to get started:

A.  What would I need to find to suggest that my hypothesis is correct?

B.  How can I eliminate variables that might confuse my results? (i.e. If studying effects of sunlight on positivity in a work environment, make sure you are not also adding free food or opportunities to walk around.)

C.  If you’re studying humans, which ones, and why does it matter? How old are they? What ethnicity? What religion? What income level? What education level? Not all of these will matter for every study (education level would be more important than religion in studying effects of education on earning potential), but identify the ones that do.

D.  If you’re doing textual analysis, what texts do you plan to analyze? And what will you be looking for when you read them?

Additional Suggestions for Rationales:

1.  Usually the introduction of a journal article shares some similarities with a rationale—they both typically mention the problem being studied and why it’s important to learn about it. Use the journal articles you’ve researched so far as models and guides for developing your rationale.

2.  Your rationale will likely be 1-2 paragraphs.

3.  You can begin your first paragraph with a mini thesis statement that sounds something like “Research Topic X is important to study because a significant finding will have such-and-such an effect(s).” Use your own words, but those key elements (research topic, value judgment, effect(s) that is important to your audience, etc.) should appear in your justification.

4.  The rest of your rationale can expand on these effects as you connect those to your audience and show the importance of what you are proposing studying.

5.  The last sentence of your rationale should summarize your main idea and emphasize the importance again.

6.  Remember to speak in terms of what your audience (the people you want to convince) want. Are they philanthropic and want to help others? Are they considering you for a research grant to promote an area of study they care about? Don’t make it obvious you’re talking to someone in particular (i.e. “Because my audience loves children, I want to study children.”), but consistently speak in terms of the benefits others will receive from what you find. These do not need to be big benefits either—research is often a series of small steps towards big conclusions.
