Chapter 4: Questions

For Q1-6: Assume there are 2 countries, the US and Malaysia, that can produce 2 goods, PCs and wheat; assume PCs are capital intensive and wheat is labor intensive; and assume the US is endowed with lots of capital and Malaysia is endowed with lots of labor.

1. Who are the winners and losers according to the factor model? Explain.

2. What is the Stolper/Samuelson theory?

3. What is the factor mobility assumption in the Factor Model? How does it differ in the Sector Model?

4. Given the different assumption about factor mobility, what does the sector model predict will be the result of trade? Who are the winners and losers?

5. A Society-Centered approach argues that “Trade policy reflects interest-group demands.” What do the factor and sector models agree on? What do they differ on?

6. What is the evidence for the factor model? Sector model?

7. Once we determine certain groups have common interests to lobby for or against trade barriers, how might the Collective Action Problem prevent them from organizing? Explain the 3 Important Characteristics of Trade Politics that seem to support this is a problem.

8. The factor and sector models show how trade preferences are formed. And we have seen the challenges of organizing the interest into a demand for trade policy. But how the supply side work? In general, why does the electoral system and the number of veto players matter?

9. What part/statement/example/concept/story in the chapter did you like the most? Why?

10. What question do you think needs to be asked about this chapter that has not been?

 Chapter 5: Questions

1. Contrast the State-Centered approach to the Society-Centered approach. What are the 2 central assumptions of the State Centered approach that contrast sharply with the Society Centered approach?

2. Define industrial policy. What is meant by a “strong state?” Is a strong or weak state more likely to implement industrial policy? Why?

3. Explain the Infant Industry justification for the industrial policy of raising tariffs to protect a new industry.

4. How does Strategic Trade Theory differ from the Infant Industry theory? Explain the impact of subsidies using the example detailed in Figure 5.1 pages 100-103.

5. Why is industrial policy used most in the high-tech industry? Previously, we had said comparative advantage determines what country should produce a good. What does Strategic Trade theory suggest?

6. What part/statement/example/concept/story in the chapter did you like the most? Why?

Sibling abuse has only recently started receiving scholarly attention, though it is the most common type of family violence (Wallace & Roberson, 2017). Abuse and aggression by children towards caregivers is less common, but still prevalent in that 51% of juveniles adjudicated for domestic assault have victimized a parent or caregiver (Hong, Kral, Espelage, & Allen-Meares, 2012). Parricide, caregiver homicide committed by adolescent or adult children, is the least frequent of all, with adult children making up the clear majority of these perpetrators (Malmquist, 2010).

Forensic psychology professionals in numerous roles are often faced with investigating family violence, conducting risk assessments, and making recommendations to the court for service delivery plans for perpetrators and victims. In this Assignment, you analyze knowledge about the features of family members who are typically involved as perpetrators, victims, or both in each type of family violence covered this week. You also analyze similarities and differences in these features. You then propose a plan to gather additional knowledge about one of the three types of family violence.

To prepare for this Assignment:

Read the Learning Resources about sibling abuse, caregiver abuse, and parricide. Identify re-occurring themes across these types of family violence and ways in which they differ. Identify the type of family violence among these three that most interests you and outline a plan to gather more information that you believe would assist a forensic psychology professional in recognizing and intervening in this form of family violence.

The Assignment: 4 page

Based on scholarly references:

  • Identify and explain themes and features, such as perpetrator, family, or victim characteristics, that seem to be common to all three types of family violence: sibling abuse, caregiver abuse, and parricide.
  • Identify and explain themes and features that differ among these types of family violence.
  • Consider the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychology professionals. Pick the type of family violence among the three that interests you the most and that would be professionally relevant. Identify features of this type of violence with limited or no information. Explain why you think a forensic psychology professional would need more information about these features.
    • For example: In parricide, little is known about the victims of parricide. Information about the victims’ characteristics, as well as their relationships with the perpetrator and other family members, could assist case workers in identifying families at risk of parricide [further explain why . . . ].
  • Describe how you would conduct a scholarly literature review to gather more information about the features that you have identified.

Homework due Monday 112-14-2020

The state legislature recognizes the need to focus efforts and resources on criminal justice reform. Acting as a state policy analyst and building on the annotated bibliography and literature review you have completed, propose 2 policy alternatives to address criminal justice reform.

Your readings in the course have exposed you to many of the key topics in criminal justice while showing you the importance of research and theories to the development of sound policies. You have seen how the writing in the text and other sources is not mere opinion or unsupported assertions. Rather, the work is built upon existing knowledge and contemporary studies.

As you consider how to advise the legislature on how to address criminal justice reform in your state, you must rely on factual information and utilize a theoretical foundation. Criminal behavior results from a variety of factors explained through various theoretical perspectives. One or more theories may draw your attention as instructive about the issues surrounding criminal behavior. Have these theories been supported by research?

Assignment Guidelines

You are a policy analyst in the legislative affairs office of your state legislature. The criminal justice committee of the legislature has requested recommendations about how to address criminal justice reform in the state. You must conduct research and assemble 2 possible policy initiatives in your proposal. Use the 7 step process outlined in the MUSE link, CHDS Policy Options Analysis. Include the 7 steps in your proposal.

  1. Define the Problem
  2. Construct Alternative Solutions
  3. Criteria for Judging Success of Proposed Solutions
  4. Projected outcomes for alternative Solutions
  5. Analyze Trade-Offs for Solutions
  6. Choose Best Solutions
  7. Explain Recommendations.

Address the following in 3–4 pages:

  • Prepare a professional policy memo to the criminal justice committee outlining the actions to be taken, funding sources, and implementation challenges that may arise for each alternative.
    • Compare and contrast the two policy recommendations.
  • How would you evaluate whether either policy was successful after it was implemented?
  • How will you utilize your research from the first 3 weeks? Explain.

Area of Interest in NP Overview

Over the course of the next eight weeks, we will be examining concepts related to nursing research and the translation of evidence to practice. To help you better understand the process, you will be identifying a practice issue for nurse practitioners. You will develop a PICOT question associated with the issue, find evidence to support a change in practice, and present your recommendations for change to your peers. This week, we will work on helping you refine your area of interest so that you will be able to develop a concise question for next week’s assignment. You are encouraged to use the area of interest you chose for the project in NR500NP and/or NR501NP; however, you may choose a different area if you wish.

Select an issue in nurse practitioner (NP) practice that is of interest to you and in which you would like to see a practice change occur. Conduct a review of literature to see what is currently known about the topic. In 1-2 paragraphs, describe the scope and relevance of the issue and your recommended change. Provide reference support from at least two outside scholarly sources to support your ideas.

Requirements:

Discussion Criteria

  1. Application of Course Knowledge: The student post contributes unique perspectives or insights gleaned from personal experience or examples from the healthcare field. The student must accurately and fully discuss the topic for the week in addition to providing personal or professional examples. The student must completely answer the entire initial question.
  2. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: The student responds to a student peer and course faculty to further dialogue.
    1. Peer Response: The student responds substantively to at least one topic-related post by a student peer. A substantive post adds content or insights or asks a question that will add to the learning experience and/or generate discussion.
      • A post of “I agree” with a repeat of the other student’s post does not count as a substantive post. A collection of shallow posts does not equal a substantive post.
      • The peer response must occur on a separate day from the initial posting.
      • The peer response must occur before Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT.
      • The peer response does not require a scholarly citation and reference unless the information is paraphrased and/or direct quotes are used, in which APA style standards then apply.
    2. Faculty Response: The student responds substantively to at least one question by course faculty. The faculty question may be directed to the student, to another student, or to the entire class.
      • A post of “I agree” with a repeat of the faculty’s post does not count as a substantive post. A collection of shallow posts does not equal a substantive post.
      • The faculty response must occur on a separate day from the initial posting.
      • Responses to the faculty member must occur by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT.
      • This response does not require a scholarly citation and reference unless the information is paraphrased and/or direct quotes are used, in which APA style standards then apply.
  3. Integration of Evidence: The student post provides support from a minimum of one scholarly in-text citation with a matching reference AND assigned readings OR online lessons, per discussion topic per week. Two resources total and to count must be an in-text citation.
    1. What is a scholarly resource? A scholarly resource is one that comes from a professional, peer-reviewed publication (e.g., journals and government reports such as those from the FDA or CDC).
      • Contains references for sources cited
      • Written by a professional or scholar in the field and indicates credentials of the author(s)
      • Is no more than 5 years old for clinical or research article
    2. What is not considered a scholarly resource?
      • Newspaper articles and layperson literature (e.g., Readers Digest, Healthy Life Magazine, Food, and Fitness)
      • Information from Wikipedia or any wiki
      • Textbooks
      • Website homepages
      • The weekly lesson
      • Articles in healthcare and nursing-oriented trade magazines, such as Nursing Made Incredibly Easy and RNMagazine (Source: What is a scholarly article.docx; Created 06/09 CK/CL Revised: 02/17/11, 09/02/11 nlh/clm)
    3. Can the lesson for the week be used as a scholarly source?
      • Information from the weekly lesson can be cited in a posting; however, it is not to be the sole source used in the post.
    4. Are resources provided from CU acceptable sources (e.g., the readings for the week)?
      • Not as a sole source within the post. The textbook and/or assigned (required) articles for the week can be used, but another outside source must be cited for full credit. Textbooks are not considered scholarly sources for the purpose of discussions.
    5. Are websites acceptable as scholarly resources for discussions?
      • Yes, if they are documents or data cited from credible websites. Credible websites usually end in .gov or .edu; however, some .org sites that belong to professional associations (e.g., American Heart Association, National League for Nursing, American Diabetes Association) are also considered credible websites. Websites ending with .com are not to be used as scholarly resources
  4. Professionalism in Communication: The post presents information in logical, meaningful, and understandable sequence, and is clearly relevant to the discussion topic. Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation are accurate.
  5. Wednesday Participation Requirement: The student provides a substantive response to the graded discussion question(s) or topic(s), posted by the course faculty (not a response to a peer), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
  6. Total Participation Requirement: The student provides at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic, one to a student peer, and one to a faculty question) on two different days during the week.

Solving the Problem: Five-Step Marketing Research Approach Presentation

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to place students in the active role of a marketing manager with a problem threatening the organization’s survival. Students will respond to a specific scenario that requires them to address the concepts both critically and creatively to solve the scenario’s dilemma.

Assignment Steps

Resources: Marketing: Ch. 2: pg. 40-46, 54-69; Ch. 3: pg. 72-92; Ch. 8: pg. 207-227; Ch. 9: pg. 242-257

Scenario: You are the marketing manager for a local nonprofit charity whose funding is based on membership fees. You’ve noticed a severe drop in new memberships and a decline in repeat memberships, which is threatening your organization’s ability to survive and grow. You have decided to implement the Five-Step Marketing Research Process to help understand the problem and create solution strategies to implement.

Create a 10- to 20-slide (not counting the cover slide and reference slide) Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with speaker’s notes on the Five-Step Marketing Research Approach detailing how you will use each step to solve the membership issue the local nonprofit charity is facing.

Address the following in your role as marketing manager:

  • Define the Five-Step Marketing Research Approach and discuss the importance of research in marketing.
  • Describe each step of the Marketing Research Approach (one slide for each step) in detail including its goal, and create an example aligned to the scenario above to illustrate how that stage would be implemented toward the problem’s solution.
  • Define the two types of research data this process gathers and their pros and cons. Share examples of each type that would be useful in solving the scenario.
  • Compare and contrast the Five-Step Process with two alternative methods for conducting marketing research.  What are the pros and cons of each?
  • Define what it means to differentiate a service and provide an example to illustrate how the local nonprofit charity in the scenario can use the strategy to help increase target market interest.
  • Explain how differentiation will help position the organization.

Cite a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources with one being from the textbook or the University Library.

Format your presentation consistent with APA guidelines.

Why is social media important for business ?

  • The goal of this assignment is for you to annotate two empirical articles from peer-reviewed journals that answer your research question. An annotated bibliography includes an alphabetical listing of sources and an annotation, or a brief description of each article (max 175 words).
  • Your annotated bibliography must contain at least two relevant empirical articles from peer- reviewed journals and use APA format. The articles must have been published within the last five years.
  • As a reminder, an empirical article refers to a peer-reviewed article published in an academic journal that includes some sort of data collection and analysis. In other words, the authors need to have conducted an experiment, surveyed participants, interviewed individuals, or collected some sort of data from which they drew conclusions. Theses or dissertations will not be accepted. If you’re not sure if your article is empirical or not, please ask me.
Each annotation should answer the following questions for each article:
  1. What are the researchers investigating?
  2. What is the primary hypothesis or research questions in the study? (If a study has more than one research question and/or hypothesis, only include the question(s) or hypotheses that are relevant to your research question. You can quote these from the study. Don’t list more than three hypotheses or research questions.
  3. Describe the method of the study, or how the researchers collected the data.
  4. What did the researchers find regarding their hypothesis or research question– were they supported or unsupported?
  5. How does this article apply to your topic (i.e., how is it relevant)? Be specific here.

For example, here’s an annotated bibliography:

Danel, D., Dziedzic-Danel, A., & Kleisner, K. (2016). Does age difference really matter? Facial markers of biological quality and age difference between husband and wife. Journal of Comparative Human Biology, 67, 337-347. doi:10.1016/j.jchb.2016.05.002

In this study, the researchers are investigating the role of age, attractiveness, and masculinity in mating.

The researchers hypothesized that attractive women prefer and enter in relationships with older partners, and masculine men prefer and enter in relationships with younger attractive partners. To assess attractiveness and masculinity, the researchers examined 55 couple’s photographs to measure markers of biological quality such as symmetry and averageness. To assess age, they used birth records. The data were consistent with their hypothesis: Attractive women had husbands who were relatively older than themselves, and masculine men had attractive wives who were relatively younger than themselves. This study is relevant to our research question because we are investigating the relationship between attractiveness and mate selection in online dating. We now know that hetero males prefer attractive younger mates for reproductive reasons and attractive hetero females prefer older mates for stability and security reasons.

SPC 3210 1

page1image5777984page1image7928176page1image5896336page1image7958752

In terms of mechanics, your annotated bibliography should follow the following guidelines:

  • Be typed, use 1-inch margins, 12-point font (single or double spacing is okay)
  • Include your name and class title (SPC 3210) in the upper left or right corner of the paper
  • The reference for the article should be in APA format
  • Each annotation should be no more than 175 words
