management what kind of leaders are you

To highlight a phrase used often in leader development research, “LEADERSHIP begins in the mind.” For anyone to lead effectively you must understand what is going on inside of ourselves. To lead others, we have to lead ourselves. Only when you have developed a consistent habit of looking within, can you then better understand and lead others.

Leadership, as you have seen in this course, is not a title; it is the ability to influence people. For people to follow you, or any leader, they must have trust in the leader. If you are to develop a leader-follower relationship, you have to have a consistency of character, a clear vision, and personal discipline and moral conduct.

Today there are untold challenges facing leaders and the requirements for effective leadership remain constant regardless of the crisis, situation, or organization.

This leads me to the following:

  • What kind of leader are you?
  • Has your philosophy on leadership changed in the past few weeks?
  • If you had one leader you want to emulate, who is that leader? (Be specific in identifying that leader’s leadership traits, attributes, values, and competencies.)

Post your discussion thread and respond to at least one classmate’s discussion post by providing additional insights and information on the current topic. Consider using personal experiences as they may relate to the weekly topic. Remember that the expectation is for all students to participate in these discussions.

IPR Recording Mental health nursing

Module 02 Content

  1. Interpersonal Process Recording (IPR)

    Purpose
This assignment will help prepare you for conversations with clients with mental health conditions.

    Course Competency
Describe the foundations of mental health nursing.

    Transferable Skill
Communication: Displaying capability in writing, reading, and oral communication; understanding of non-verbal language.

    Instructions
It will be carried out with two students working together. This is a “role-play exercise,” One student is the student nurse, and the other will role-play as a client. In this assignment, the nursing student will demonstrate the therapeutic nurse-client relationship and analyze the therapeutic and nontherapeutic techniques used. You will take turns in the roles.

This is not about always having therapeutic responses. It is about learning from practice and review. It is expected that you will think of other ways to respond or interact with the client that may be more therapeutic after the interaction is terminated. After the conversation is over, you will complete in IPR form.

    The client roles are:

    • Mr. Jones is a 69-year-old retired engineer. He was admitted to the in-patient psychiatric unit the previous day. His daughter had called the police when he locked himself in his bathroom and refused to come out. She thought he was suicidal. He was brought to the hospital by the police and was admitted on involuntary status. Since admission, he has been reticent but told his daughter he had no reason to live since his wife died.
    • Diagnosis: Major Depressive Disorder
    • Nursing Diagnosis: Risk for suicide.
    • Mrs. Alvarez is a 34-year-old female who has lived in this country for the past 10 yrs. She is a stay-at-home mom with three small children. Her husband works two jobs to support the family. Lately, she has been extremely anxious and fears that her children will become ill or injured. This seems to be an unrealistic concern, but she has been unable to sleep well and has lost 15 lbs. in the past month. She is a voluntary admission and states she knows she needs help.
    • Diagnosis: Generalized Anxiety Disorder
    • Nursing Diagnosis: Ineffective coping
    • You will select the role you wish as a client and take turns switching roles. After the conversation, you will document the interactions using the form provided and following the guidelines instructions for each column.

      IPR Form Explanation

The IPR is completed with the form to guide you and the rubric to explain the grading process for content.

      IPR Form

    • The first column is for you, the nursing students, comments/ questions, and responses. You may want to include the introduction process. It is understandable if the initial conversation is more superficial to establish rapport. You may not want to include all of this but move on to the more focused interaction. Your nonverbal communication is included here.
    • Then, the conversation will focus on the client’s feelings, concerns, issues as they have identified them. After the introduction, it may be beneficial to establish a short-term goal for the interaction with the client.
    • The second column is for the client’s comments, questions, responses. Also, the nonverbal reactions of the client are included in this column.
    • The middle column is for you to write what you are thinking or feeling.
    • The last two columns are for you to document the technique that you used in that portion of the conversation. If it is a non – therapeutic response, you must write the response and think of how to revise it to more therapeutic response. You can change any response if you think of how you could have responded differently but, identify and change all non – therapeutic responses.

Chapter 8 Theme

Be sure to distinguish between your typical understanding of a story’s themes, plural, and a story’s theme, singular, the overall meaning of the text. As the book points out, you won’t be able to capture the entire complexity of the work in the one sentence, but you can articulate a meaningful interpretation that encompasses the whole story. The theme itself can work as your entire thesis as theme is a full sentence with a narrowed topic and a controlling idea. The narrowed topic will be the primary subject of the work. What the book calls “subjects” is very much like the elements you usually associate with themes, plural. Some texts call them sub themes. They include general subjects of importance that writers often use for their works. Notice the quote at the beginning of the chapter by Herman Melville: “To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” Some of the sub-themes of Moby Dick include revenge, authority, gender, race, etc. However, many would choose revenge as the central subject of the book. After choosing the central subject of the book, you must then choose the next part of your thematic sentence, the controlling idea. When articulating that, ask yourself what it is you think the author may be saying about the narrowed topic, just like we do when we are typically establishing our thesis statements. It may also help to further narrow your topic. For instance, the book offers a possible interpretation of theme for Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home,” and the central subject that was narrowed to was “war.” That was narrowed further to “The brutal experience of war.” After that the question of what about the brutal experiences of war in this story is answered. The theme ends up looking like this “The brutal experiences of war can alienate a person from those – even family and friends – who are innocent of war’s realities.” For Moby Dick, it could be something like “Taking revenge can lead someone to destroying themselves instead of the target intended.” Read the chapter carefully, especially the list of pointers provided, and use the method we have been using to establish the thesis statement, just like I did above, to establish a theme for one of the stories assigned for the chapter this time. Choose a quote as evidence and do it just like any other discussion board. The response post can offer a competing theme or add more evidence to the original post’s interpretation

Voter ID laws in Texas have been the topic of many controversial conversations, even more recently within my circle of friends.  My opinions and beliefs often vary from that of my close peers because 50% of them follow a Republican, more conservative school of thought in contrast with my more liberal belief system.  My thoughts regarding the need for strict voter ID laws are binary and complicated at least, because while I believe voters should be required to provide an official form of identification to vote, I also believe those laws would be burdensome and discriminatory to various racial and ethnic  groups.  I believe that while voter fraud doesn’t exist on a large scale, there has been evidence of fraud in smaller numbers.  According to a study from the ACLU, since 2000, fraud occurring at physical voting locations are “vanishingly rare” and found less than fifty instances where voters were pretending to be someone else.  Furthermore, the ACLU stated that some of those incidents were the direct result of an “honest mistake” by the election worker or the voter themselves.  Their overall opinion is that the requirement to show an ID at the poll is a “solution in search of a problem” (Oppose Voter ID Legislation – Fact Sheet).

As mentioned earlier, the introduction of strict ID requirements to vote, I believe, does have an adverse effect on various racial and ethnic groups as well as suppresses voter turnout.  Making an appointment is the first step, which can be difficult for those without a computer or internet access.  Once they arrive for their appointment, the only way for a first-time applicant without a U.S. passport to obtain an ID is to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship in the form of a correct birth certificate provided by the state where the applicant was born.  As a second and third requirement, the applicant must provide two proofs of Texas residency and a second form of identification, both sourced from a lengthy list published on the Texas Department of Public Safety website.  Finally, a document showing proof of a social security number is also required (How to Apply for a Texas Identification Card).  This process alone is extremely confusing and can be difficult to navigate with assistance.

For many, that process to obtain an ID is easy and convenient, but for others, the process can also be a stringent, time consuming, and very expensive one.  According to an article from The Washington Post, a black Houston resident found the process to be very difficult and restrictive, disqualifying him from casting a vote in the 2016 presidential election.  Anthony Settles name did not match his birth certificate because his mother changed his name when he was fourteen.  In order to secure a Texas ID, the state mandated he provide a copy of his 1964 “name-change certificate” which they were unable to produce.  As a result, he would be required to pursue the legal process, costing him in excess of $ 250 (Horwitz).  For the elderly, most live on a fixed income from social security benefits and do not have the extra money to spend.  The entire process could even be more costly for others that live in rural areas and have no method of transportation to and from the city, or for the racial and ethnic minorities, like Settles, that are unable to verify their identity due to a lack of  access to historical and statistical records.  Using data from an exit poll, a study indicated that “African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans” were not likely to have a source to verify their identity (Pryor et al., 69).  In 2014, a study found that 400 votes were not cast because the new laws were confusing and unclear to some.  Many voters indicated they did not vote because they believed they didn’t meet the ID requirements and later discovered that they did (Pryor et al., 68).

Texas has a history of trying to enact legislation to disenfranchise the voters of some racial groups, and in my opinion, the voter ID law is no different.  I look forward to a day where everyone regardless of vote is treated equally, of his or her skin color, origin, or religion.
