Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 3 , 4
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Initial Post Instructions
A cellphone company once ran a television ad touting its call reliability, in which a young man is talking to his future father-in-law, who is telling him to address him by his first name and consider him a friend. The young man launches into a series of variations of the first name. Unknown to either party, the call is dropped and the young man does not hear any response from the father. He becomes very nervous and reverts back to “Mr.” and “Sir.” The ad’s message is clear: Use our service and this sort of thing won’t happen.

For the initial post, address one or more of the following:

  • Why do you think the ad agency chose this power relationship for its commercial? Is it one to which you can relate?
  • Have you had any kind of similar experience at your workplace or school (e.g., with a patient, client, or professor), perhaps with a rule or law?
  • Have you encountered the power relationships exemplified in the commercial when implementing various healthcare practices such as disease prevention or hospital protocols/regulations? Are co-workers and patient receptive?

Having a better understanding of the Gospels allows for a deeper, more personal connection with Jesus and God. I have always tried to put others before me, sometimes to the point of my own detriment. I am very much aware of what I do and how I present myself to the world. I learned early on that sometimes we are the only Bible that people get access to. My wife thinks I care too much about how others perceive me. I am still growing in my faith and walk with Jesus. By remembering that God will always forgive a truly repentant heart, I can pick myself back up, with God’s help, and learn from the mistake and move on. By doing this, I am showing others the loving mercy of God. We are chosen by God for a reason. He has a great plan for us that includes work on His behalf. We are His ambassadors and what we do and how we act reflects God. God is sending us out into the world to help Him to reconcile it to Himself. Jesus says that whosoever loses his life for His sake shall gain it and whosoever wants to keep his life will lose it. We are called to a life of service. God says He will take care of our needs so we can be free to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters as well as the world.

Discussion: Goals and Limitations of Criminal Investigative Analysis

A criminal investigative analyst must understand the different goals and limitations of the criminal investigative analysis process and its many different approaches. The clinical approach has a different goal than the actuarial approach. Both are beneficial but in different ways. It is the role of the criminal investigative analyst to determine the best approach for each case.

In this Discussion, you compare the clinical to the actuarial approaches to criminal investigative analysis and determine the limitations and biases of each.

Review the Learning Resources concerning approaches in criminal investigative analysis.

Explain the goals and limitations of the criminal investigative analysis process.

Explain the difference between a clinical and actuarial approach to criminal investigative analysis, providing an example of how and when to use each.

Describe some common biases involved in the investigative analysis process.

at least 600 words post , Thinking about Bullshit

  Links of videos:

Introduction

Bergstrom and West remind us in their preface that they “want to help people of all political perspective resist bullshit, because we feel that a democracy is healthiest when voters can see through the bullshit coming from all sides” (xv). I’d like to build on this point by inviting you to consider two statements about voter fraud in US elections. You’ve reviewed these two positions already in the module. As you’ll recall, John Oliver espouses a largely liberal view about election fraud and Eric Eggers presents a generally conservative point of view.

In this discussion board, I challenge you to test the point of view that you tend to agree with for bullshit. That is, see if you can call bullshit on the conclusion that you most want to agree with. This practice of doubting what we want to believe is a corner-stone of critical thinking and is crucial if we are going to be honest with ourselves and others.

Assignment

Post (Your post has three parts. Develop each in at least one paragraph)

Begin by selecting the video that you most agree with. (I recommend that you watch once or twice with the questions below in mind.)

  1. Write a one-paragraph Toulmin summary of the video you’ve selected. (It might help to review what a Toulmin summary is.)
  2. Use the methods suggested by Bergstrom and West to examine the video for bullshit and call out whatever you see. Phrases like “persuasive bullshit” and “evasive bullshit” may be useful. Also remember, that you’ll want to focus on patterns and major claims. Someone can be a little sloppy in their argument without bullshitting.
  3. Test two pieces of evidence the author introduces. Does the evidence say what the speaker claims? Is it presented in context or is the speaker twisting it?

Make sure each paragraph is clearly marked.

Development

Your post should represent 60- 90 minutes of work and be at least 600 words long.

Module 2 Classmates

You are also required to read and reply to other students  (at least 2)   , as indicated in each discussion assignment.

  • Your replies should offer new substantiated ideas or thoughtful questions.
  • I encourage friendly debate and disagreement but ask that it be courteous and respectful. Do not be afraid to speak your mind, but remember that yours is only one opinion.

Each post should be at least one well-developed paragraph (approximately 4-6 sentences or more, unless otherwise indicated).  Use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

classmate 1:  Wendy Morales Module Two (2) Reflection

Reading chapter 6-14 of the book “Finance: Applications and Theory” by Cornett and others gave me a better understanding of Module 2 FIN3400. In my opinion, the course content was simplified and detailed enough to cover key areas of corporate finance using individual examples. I was not only able to connect the core thematic areas but also perceived finance from a personal perspective. After the successful completion of the course, I believe I now have a better understanding on how to value bonds and stocks, characterize and estimate risk and return, as well as make capital budgeting decisions. Indeed, this course is suitable for non-finance major students to learn and practice finance.

As a student during my industrial attachment, I realized that the company I was working for was planning to introduce a new product line in the market. On attending the project briefing at the director’s office, I was delighted to see how concepts on capital budgeting and working capital management were being applied to evaluate the feasibility of the project. The finance director explained to the team that qualitative and quantitative factors needed to be considered before implementing the capital project. There was a slide presentation on NPV, IRR, PI, and the discounted payback period, which are capital budgeting techniques. I think the concerns of the director was on the expected level of return and investment risk associated with the project.

Cornett et al. (2019) provide elaborate and relevant examples of financial management topics that I found to be useful in undergraduate corporate finance. Any student studying corporate finance should understand the valuation of bonds and stocks as they inform decisions about financial markets and institutions (Brigham & Ehrhardt, 2017). Similarly, characterizing and estimating risk and return helps one to make appropriate decisions on suitable securities for investments. All in all, financial planning and management will always involve decision making based on qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Classmate 2:   Olivia Fernandez Reflection 2

information is very beneficial to me. We invest money into stocks when we know we will make money out of it. (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020) The stock market is something that needs to be followed closely. You can make a lot of money, but you can also lose a lot of money. The stock market is known to react to what is going on financially in the world so it’s important to keep that in mind (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020). Recently when COVID-19 started the stock market went down and, a lot of people took that opportunity to buy stocks. This module also teaches us how investors take higher risks expecting higher returns (Cornett, Adair, & Nofsinger, 2020). In this module, we learned how to calculate returns which help us determine if our investment would be a good one. All these formulas and theories that we used in this module are very valuable and will aid us in our life at some point.

Energy Forms and Changes

1. After completing the background reading for this assignment, go to the “Energy Forms and Changes” simulation on the PhET simulations website at: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-forms-and-changes. Click the play arrow on the simulation graphic to run the web-based simulation or click DOWNLOAD to run the simulation locally on your device.

2. Experiment with the two components of the simulation – Intro and Systems. While experimenting, think about how the concepts of forms of energy, energy transfer, and energy conversion are being illustrated in the simulation.

a. Intro Simulation – In this simulation, explore how heating or cooling iron, brick, water, and olive oil adds or removes energy from the object. Place individually, or stack, the blocks and beakers on the stands. Slide the bar to heat or cool the object(s). Visualize the types, conversion, and transfer of energy in the system by selecting Energy Symbols in the upper right of the simulation screen. Visualize the temperature change of objects by dragging thermometers (upper left of the simulation screen) to the objects.

b. Systems Simulation – In this simulation, you can build your own energy system by choosing an energy source [options (4) in the lower left of the simulation screen], an energy converter [options (2) in the center of the simulation screen], and an energy user [options (4) in the lower right of the simulation screen] and observe how various forms of energy are transferred and change within the system. Visualize the types, conversion, and transfer of energy in the system by selecting Energy Symbols. Vary the amount of energy input to the system by the energy source by using the options provided with each of the energy sources.

3. After spending some time experimenting with the simulations, follow the steps below to conduct the experiments using the Systems Simulation. Before beginning, be prepared to write down your observations.

Experiment Instructions

1. Create THREE different energy system setups to experiment with. Each setup must contain an energy source, an energy converter, and an energy user.

a. Each setup must have a different energy source and a different energy user

b. You must use different energy converters for two of the setups. (Note that there are only two types of energy converters.)

c. Before running each setup, write down a hypothesis, based on your current understanding after reading the background information for the activity, that predicts the types of energy conversions that will take place, and the transfer (flow) of energy in the system.

2. Run each of the setups by providing energy to the system from the source. Experiment with varying the rate of energy provided by the source.

3. For each system setup, tell a story of what is happening in the simulation by writing down, in very specific detail, your observations of the types of energy, transfer (flow) of energy, and conversions of energy taking place in the system as it runs. HINT: While running the simulation, select Energy Symbols to visualize the types of energy, how it is being transferred within the system, and how it is being converted from one form to another.

Address the following in recording your observations:

a. What forms of energy are contained in the energy source and the energy user?

b. What specific energy conversions are taking place within energy source and energy user?

c. What specific energy conversions are taking place within the converter as energy is transferred from the source to the user?

d. How do changes or adjustments made to the energy source affect the types, conversions, or transfer of energy within the system?

Experiment Results and Conclusions

Based on your observations for all three system set ups, formulate some general results and conclusions for:

1. how the first law of thermodynamics was obeyed in terms of accounting for all the energy in the system, and

2. how the second law of thermodynamics was obeyed in terms of the direction of energy transfer in the system.

Activity Submission

1. Create a document containing a report for your experimentation with the three system setups using these instructions:

a. For each system setup, develop a paragraph that includes:

i. a title that describes the system setup (source-converter-user)

ii. a clear and succinct presentation of your hypothesis.

iii. a clear and succinct presentation of your observations, per the instructions in part 3. of the Experiment Instructions section.

iv. a clear and succinct evaluation of the correctness of your hypothesis based on the information presented in part iii above.

b. Develop a paragraph that includes a clear and succinct presentation of your general results and conclusions, per the instructions in the Experiment Results and Conclusions section above.

c. Include your full name and the date you completed the activity at the top of the document.

Submit your document (in either .docx or .pdf file format) as instructed in the assignment location within the Canvas course

Wk 3 6220 Discussion Response 2

Personality theories try to unravel the nature of human beings. There is a myriad of theories that various scholars have formatted to understand human behavior and the motives behind the actions they display. This discussion focuses on the differences and similarities between psychoanalytic and behavioral theories of personality. It concludes by identifying the theory that most aligns with me.

Key Idea

The psychoanalytic theory states that human behavior results from experiences between three sections of the mind: the id, the ego, and the superego. Jessica (2018) posited that the fundamental idea of this theory is that human growth is controlled by inner drives, unmet needs, and unconscious motivations from childhood. On the contrary, the behavioral theory focuses on how students acquire knowledge or learn, and its key idea is that all habits or behaviors are learned through interaction with the environment. Those hereditary influences have little impact on these behaviors (Jessica, 2018).

Differences

According to the psychoanalytic theory, humans’ innate drives and impulses are majorly inborn, and that the unconscious mind comprises instinctual drives and impulses (Phelps, 2015). The theory states that survival is linked to drives and instinctual drives and impulses. On human behavioral control, the psychoanalytic theory maintains that the unconscious drive plays a critical role in controlling human behavior.

Zhang (2020) maintained that the psychoanalytic theory usually refutes the idea that human behavior is shaped by the environment or external factors. Regarding the concept of human nature, the psychoanalytic theory states that humans are born evil. On the other hand, the behavioral theory tends to hold that cultural and sub-cultural conditioning shape an individual’s behavior. Consequently, the personality of an individual is formed. It also holds that human lives are already pre-determined even before they are born.

The behavioral model adopts treatment centered on core learning concepts and different learning mechanisms and strategies, including reinforcing (Phelps, 2015). It is utterly concerned with the idea of free will. The behaviorists assume that acceptable conditioning, reinforcement, imitation, modeling result in normal behavior. Moreover, the behaviorists are conscious that other key processes within the brain, including perception, might be taking place. Still, such activity is not assessed simply because it cannot be evaluated. However, the psychoanalytic theory depends heavily on suppositions and speculation. Although psychoanalytic theory can explain behavior, it cannot relate observable behavior to the force that brings about that behavior. As such, it is more theoretical than scientific as compared to behavioral theory. Similarly, the behavioral theory holds that cultural conditioning influences behaviors and personality, while psychoanalytical theory argues the unconscious mind shapes the behavior or personality.

Similarity

Both psychoanalytical and behavioral theories of personality refute the idea that the environment shapes human behavior. They are deterministic as they believe that there is a force that propels every action hat human engages in. Secondly, the two theories acknowledge the role that experiences play in shaping human behavior. Precisely, the behaviorists hold that the previous conditioning determines the present personalities of humans. The same idea is held by Jessica (2018), who appreciates the fact that reinforcement and punishment can help in behavior modification.

In conclusion, psychoanalytic and behavioral theories are the two most important theories that explain human personality. Despite the striking differences that appear in the two, the two theories are similar in a way. As such, I would select the psychoanalytic theory since it pays attention to the roles that a person’s unconscious and early childhood experience play. More importantly, the theory explains how personality is shaped by the structures of the human mind, including the id, ego, and superego.
