Strategies for Supporting an Argument

The question :  Ultimate_Writer

· Following the strategies below as described on p 419 of Everyone’s an Author, write three short paragraphs (4+ sentences) utilizing one different strategy (at least) for each paragraph.  Argument should be the same one you plan to use for essay , but it doesn’t have to be.

Analogy

Cause/Effect

Classification

Compare/Contrast

Define

Describe

Example

Narration

Problem/Solution

Reiteration

419 Strategies for supporting an Argument:

Analogy: Compare two things that would otherwise be quite different, used to simplify or clarify complex or abstract ideas.

Weaknesses: can oversimplify, or make an inaccurate analogy. Flying a jet is just like riding a bike . . .

Cause/Effect: Trying to outline the cause of a particular event, or guess the effects of one.

Weaknesses: can be very difficult to nail down an exact cause or the exact effects. The meteor shower happened on my birthday, so they must be related . . .

Classification: Grouping items into categories according to similarities (ie books into genres, crimes into tiers)

Weaknesses: Can be restrictive, and brings about the issue of authority—who decides what belongs where? Is a mystery novel with a lot of romance still a mystery novel?

Comparison/Contrast: Compare to look at similarities, contrast to look at differences, clearly relates two separate issues.

Weaknesses: can be too focused on two sides, ignoring middle grounds. Comparing only pro-gun and anti-gun

Definition: Define a word, concept or idea. List their characteristic features, distinguishing details, perhaps an example.

Weakness: definition too obvious. People might not agree with your definition. Eat means to consume. To be human you must socialize.

Description: How something looks, sounds, tastes feels, to give a dominant impression.

Weakness: Be sure of relevancy—is it important to know how something tastes?

Examples: Specific instances provided to back up a larger, more abstract claim.

Weakness: examples focus on small picture, and can sometimes not show the full picture.

Humor: Can help provide relief, connect with reader, vary the tone

Weakness: be wary that it fits context and tone.

Narration: A story used to engage audience reflect the argument emotionally
Weakness: works more towards emotions, less towards logic, can be manipulative.

Problem/Solution: Illustrate a problem, and provide possible solutions—how to achieve the solution and effects.

Reiteration: repetition to help support the argument through emphasis.

Weakness: runs the danger of redundancy

The Art and Science of Persuasion

The Art and Science of Persuasion

To prepare for this assignment, please read the Harnessing the Science of Persuasion article.

Persuasion is oftentimes considered an art, but it is based on the psychological science of social influence. With knowledge of the key principles that undergird this process, you may become a savvier consumer. You may also find ways to implement these strategies effectively in your personal and professional life.

Before beginning your paper, select one of the six fundamental principles identified in Cialdini (2014).

  • Assemble at least three advertisements, commercials, or personal experiences/observations that illustrate this principle. Do not use examples from the course resources.
    • Submit your examples (paste ads into the document, include URL links, and/or provide a synopsis), along with a one-paragraph description of each clearly indicating how the advertisement, commercial, or personal experience/observation illustrates the selected principle.

Then, in your paper,

  • Examine in depth how social psychological principles of persuasion are relevant, citing scholarly research (which may include course resources) on the specific principle you are addressing in your analysis.
  • Identify characteristics of the communicator, the message, and the target audience, considering key situational and contextual factors.
  • Produce a plan to intentionally enhance persuasiveness.
    • What are various alternative principles and/or techniques one might employ effectively?
  • Discuss ethical issues relevant to the collected examples, https://smartwriterblog.com/education-homework-help/the-art-and-science-of-persuasion/  as well as your own persuasive plan.
  • Apply this insight to your own personal or professional life. Specifically, how might you utilize this insight moving forward?

Fun home prep #3

=OPTION A: BAN THIS BOOK!?:  One need not look far to find on-line references to schools and libraries that have suggested “banning” or “restricting” Fun Home; some students have asked that the book deserves a “trigger warning.” Start with the article by Brian Grasso on our BB site. (HINT: Also see what happened at Duke University, the University of Utah, and/or the College of Charleston…you may refer to these if it helps.) Start by finding basic details about who, what, when, where, how—and then get on to WHY. What “criteria” were used in calling for or rejecting such bans/restrictions/warnings? Your opinions are welcome here, but the key to this paper is to accurately represent different views in such a debate before commenting on them. The article can be found in the HANDOUTS link—and it’s only 2 pages long!

OPTION B: PASSING/PERSONAS:  As we’ve noted, to “pass” means create a version of one’s self so that one can become (or try to become) a member of another group. For Bruce Bechdel, the “differences” between his public/private lives become so painfully confusing that they may have even contributed to his suicide. Don’t just list these differences (there are so many). Try to pick a sequence of a few panels or so in which Alison tries to investigate/interpret these passings and personas. (HINT: The more complex and painful examples are in the latter chapters…)

=OPTION C: ADAPTATION;  Fun Home has been very successful on Broadway, and the musical version makes some drastic changes. (EX: It uses very few of the difficult references noted in our wiki.) For now, I would suggest that you look on-line and try four songs (some are on the wiki already): “Changing My Major,” “Ring of Keys,” “Days and Days,” and/or “Telephone Wire.” For the prep, pay careful to how one song/scene re-imagines a scene (or combines scenes) from the graphic novel. (I’ll provide an attachment with some quick links to these four songs/videos.) If you do this one, keep in mind our lessons on “Quoting from a Poem or Song.”

Please write a post of at least 250 words about ONE of these OPTIONS. Please make sure to refer to specific scenes. It is worth 4 points. DUE DATE: By midnight on SATURDAY, MAY 29TH.

  2. After you watch each video, write a paper for the videos you watched from your notes. The report must be a minimum of four total pages. I will deduct points if it is less than four total pages.
  3. Write your paper with the videos in the order I listed them in the chart.
  4. Do not title each paragraph. Instead, write the name of the video in the first sentence of your paragraph. Go to a new paragraph for each video.
  5. You must use spell and grammar check before you upload your paper to the correct Dropbox found under the Assessments Tab in D2L. I take off points for grammar and punctuation. Write in complete sentences. Use paragraphs when you start writing about a new video. Use a 12-point Times New Roman font. Double-space your paper. Submit your essay in Doc or Docx format.

week one project

Course Project Scenario

Savannah Engineering, Inspection and Insurance Company

Savannah Engineering, Inspection and Insurance Company (SEIIC) is one of America’s oldest insurance companies specializing in equipment inspection and insurance for companies in the manufacturing, transportation, and energy sectors. Founded in 1873 and named for the first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic, SEIIC has grown to become a global leader in the application of engineering principles to safety and risk management. With more than 4,500 employees in 14 principal offices and 55 field locations around the world, SEIIC stands ready to meet industry needs on any continent.

More than 50% of the SEIIC employees have an engineering or technical background. Accordingly, college recruiting and training are major features of the HR program. Although SEIIC has been known as a great place to work, turnover/retention issues need constant attention in the highly competitive labor market for technical personnel. In the past, the organization was also known for outstanding customer service and for building long-term relationships with its many business partners. However, this image has slipped in recent years as the organization and market have undergone significant change and SEIIC has struggled to respond in effective ways. As a result, SEIIC has decided to undertake a complete updating of its human resources management practices.

PSY 305 Research Methods, Statistics, and Applications

In this Data Analysis project, we will be examining the distribution of three common areas of academic study and comparing these to the known mean in the overall population. Fifty students in this class have taken three measures of academic success — Math, Reading, and Spelling. As the teacher you know that each test has been used nationally and know that the expected means for each test are:

• Math –μ=71

• Reading μ=53

• Spelling μ=38

You want to know if your class is significantly different from the expected mean from the population. The data for your class of 50 students can be found here: Data Analysis_2.sav

1. State your null and alternative hypotheses.

2. Is this a one or two-tailed hypotheses? Explain.

3. Calculate the appropriate statistical test. (If you get stuck, refer back to the video from 2a or see the description in your book)

• Be sure to include measures of central tendency and variability in your analysis/writeup.

4. Can you reject the null hypothesis? Why or why not?

5. Write a results section for your findings.

• Include the descriptive statistics, type of statistical test, and results of the tests, with effect sizes and confidence intervals.
