Assignment 1: Crime Scene Investigation
Due Week 3 and worth 160 points

Preliminary investigations do not necessarily yield enough information to prosecute a criminal case. Despite a thorough preliminary investigation, many cases require a follow – up investigation. Use your textbook, the Internet, and / or Strayer Library to research articles on crime scene investigation. 

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1. Assemble a set of guidelines on conducting preliminary investigation for a criminal case.
2. Propose one (1) strategy that criminal investigators should take in order to conduct an efficient follow-up investigation. Provide a rationale to support your response. 
3. Select two major crimes (e.g. sudden deaths, sex related crimes) and compare and contrast the key differences in reporting the two major crimes that you selected.
4. Determine the three (3) most important characteristics of an effective criminal investigator and discuss the importance of each characteristic you determined.
5. Support or critique the argument that the criminal investigation process should maintain the balance regarding freedom of information through media outlets and privacy rights of alleged perpetrators of crime. Provide a rationale to support your response.
6. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

• Describe the major components of and responsibilities involved in the investigative process.
• Recommend improvements to the criminal investigation process in selected areas.
•  Describe the procedures for the preparation of field notes and the documentation of a crime scene.

Annotated Bibliography

Review the Research Paper instructions found within the Research Paper link. The Research Paper is due in Week Five. To help with preparation, complete the following and submit to your instructor for feedback.

• Topics: Select five topics that interest you, as provided in the Research Paper guidelines.
• Thesis: Develop your thesis statement—the point or perspective you will argue for, prove, and defend throughout the paper. Please see the Ashford-approved grammar handbook for information on how to develop a solid thesis.
• APA Reference Page: For this paper you must conduct research in peer-reviewed journals or other sources that are considered reliable and academic. In addition to the textbook, you need to incorporate at least five professional scholarly sources for support.

Academic Research
Academic research and papers must meet certain standards of quality recognized by the academic community. What constitutes quality, academic research?

• Primary sources written by experts in the field of study
• Secondary sources supported by research in primary sources
• Credible sources (experts in the area of study)
• Relevant research (materials are pertinent to the area of study)
• In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in the relevant field of study) is required.
• Educational and Government websites may be appropriate in some cases but should be evaluated carefully.

What sources are not acceptable for academic research and referencing?

• Encyclopedias
• Wikipedia, other wikis, or blogs
• Websites and other sources that do not provide quality researched materials—that is, the site does not employ credible sources to support the information in the document)

All research must be documented according to APA standards (see guidelines for avoiding plagiarism) and reflect professional, academic protocol.

• The purpose of the APA Reference Page is to assist you in developing research analysis skills including: critical thinking, writing, and literature research skills. The reference page should include the following information for each source:
  • Name of the article, including the complete citation
  • Summary/abstract of the article – annotation. Sometimes, it is helpful to ask yourself the following questions in synthesizing the information:
    • Who is the author?
    • What was done? For example, was it an experimental study investigating the interaction of short term memory and attention?
    • How was it done?
    • What were the major findings?
    • What were the contributions (new findings, applications, etc.)?

The paper must be two-to-three pages in length (excluding the title and reference page), and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly sources (at least two of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library) other than the textbook to support your claims and subclaims.   Clinical Trial
  Between 2004 and 2007, the National Institutes of Health conducted a STEP vaccine clinical trial—Phase IIB “test-ofconcept” study.
  The STEP study is the name of a clinical trial to test an experimental human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine. The STEP study enrolled 3,000 participants at sites in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the United States. The study was designed to test an HIV vaccine, which aimed to stimulate production of immune system T-cells that can kill HIV-infected cells.
  Based on its first evaluation of vaccine efficacy, the findings showed there were 24 cases of HIV infection among the 741 volunteers who received at least one dose of the investigational vaccine compared with 21 cases of HIV infection among the 762 volunteers who were vaccinated with the placebo. In volunteers who received at least two vaccinations, there were 19 cases of HIV infection among the 672 volunteers who received the investigational vaccine and 11 instances of HIV infection among the 691 volunteers who received placebo. The study investigators of the vaccine trials have decided to cease immunizations and are contacting study volunteers to inform them of the developments.

 ASSIGNMENTS
This assessment enables students to demonstrate understanding and application of core unit content. Students will need to select one (1) case study from those used in tutorials throughout the semester and answer a series of questions in a narrated PowerPoint. Topics will include assessment, psychoeducation, psychopharmacology, and nursing care and interventions when working with consumers with mental health issues.
This assessment encompasses content presented in online lectures, interactive online tutorials, and self-directed learning, throughout the 10-week semester.
Assessment Details:
Select one (1) case study from those presented during tutorials (e.g., Josh, Tony etc). Develop a PowerPoint presentation of no more than eight (8) slides. Your presentation should include:
• Introduction slide
• Five (5) slides to answer the questions (see below)
• Conclusion slide
• References
This must be a narrated PowerPoint, and your presentation should be between 8-10 minutes duration. You must include your script in the ‘notes’ section of your PowerPoint. Your PowerPoint presentation must be submitted in the LEO drop box in your State/Territory as an ECHO360 capture. Please see the LEO assessment tile for further information about how to do this. Only PowerPoint format will be accepted (do not use Prezi, mp4 or any other presentation software). Students are responsible for the quality of the recorded file. It is strongly recommended you listen to the audio-visual recording of your presentation prior to LEO submission to ensure you can be heard clearly.
Your presentation must critically discuss the following questions in relation to your chosen case study:
1. The condition the consumer has.
2. One (1) pharmacological treatment.
3. One (1) legal/ethical issue.
4. One (1) nursing intervention and rationale.
5. The role of the multidisciplinary team in caring for someone with this condition.

Writing requires skill and being able to write within a specified word limit is an essential component of professional and academic work. Reading and writing critically are fundamental skills which demonstrate an understanding and an ability to make judgements and solve problems, hence why only 10% of a word count should be direct quotes.
