2.6 case scenarios

Real-Life Applications: Case Scenario One

Because of all of the media attention on terrorism, your grandparents, who are elderly, are very concerned about terrorist attacks on the United States. They hear the concept of “bioterrorism” and are worried they will be poisoned. They do not understand the role public health departments play in protecting the public from terrorism. As the director of the local health department, you explain that you have a disaster plan prepared in case there is a natural or manmade disaster in the community.

Activity

(1) Define bioterrorism and how it can impact a community; (2) describe the coordination of the federal, state, and local health departments in a catastrophic event such as bioterrorism; and (3) explain the role that the public health department has in protecting special groups such as the disabled and elderly.

Case Scenario Two

One of your friends was just released from the hospital. She was pleased with her care but was not sure about her physician, who told her she was a “hospitalist.” You had not heard of the term before either.

Activity

Perform an Internet search on the term “hospitalist.” Define the term and find out if there are any current statistics on hospitalist use.

Performance of a detailed formal analysis of a single work of art

1) Perform a detailed formal analysis of a single work of art shown above.

2) Any discussion of the artist’s biography, historical context, or personal experience will not be counted towards the word count.

3) The essay should be 1500-2000 words. Use APA

4) The essay should include a discussion of all the elements and principles listed below, and Each element and principle should be addressed in three sentences.

Line ― Do you see any outlines which define objects, shapes, or forms? Are lines used to emphasize a direction (vertical, horizontal, diagonal)? Describe the important lines: are they straight or curved, short, or long, thick, or thin? How do you think the artist utilized to emphasize certain objects, forms, or people?

Light ― For a two-dimensional object, is a source of light depicted or implied? Is it a natural light source or artificial? Are the shadows created by the light true to life or does the artist distort them? How does the artist depict shadows? Through line or color? If a three-dimensional object, how does the object interact with the light in its setting? How do gradations of shadows and highlights create form or depth, emphasis, or order in the composition?

Color ― Which colors are dominantly used in this depiction? If the object is black and white, or shades of gray, did the artist choose to do this because of the media he was working or did it create a certain mood or effect? Color can describe by its hue and value (shades to tints). Does the artist’s choice of color create a certain mood? Does the artist make use of complementary colors (red/green, violet/yellow, blue/orange)? Or analogous colors (those next to one another on the color wheel)? Does the artist utilize colors that are warm or cool? Where? Is atmospheric perspective utilized (in which blurred and cool colors appear to recede and create an impression of depth in the distance, while warm and clear colors fill the foreground)?

Texture ― What is the actual texture on the surface of the object? Is it rough or smooth? If a painting, is there impasto? What is the implied texture? Are patterns created through the use of texture?

Shape ― What shapes do you see? Are the objects in the work (for a painting or drawing) or are the objects themselves (for a sculpture or architectural work) flat or volumetric? Organic or geometric? For representations of people, how does shape lend character to a figure? Are these figures proud or timid, strong, or weak, beautiful, or grotesque? What is the size of all the forms and how do they relate proportionally to one another? Are they located in the foreground, middle ground, or background? Why do you think the artist placed them there?

Space ― How does the form created by shape and line fill the space of the composition? Is there a negative, or empty, space without objects? How does the artist create depth in the image (layering of figures/objects, linear perspective, atmospheric perspective, foreshortening of figures)? If the object is three-dimensional, how does it fill our space? Is it closed or open? If a two-dimensional object, is the space flat, or does it visually project into our space?

Scale and Proportion – What is the size of the work itself? How does that size relate to the size of the human interacting with the work? Within the artwork, are all the objects and figures the same size? If not, why? Is the scale of any aspect of the work distorted? Are the proportions of the figures accurate? Is a hierarchical scale used? How is the composition proportioned?

Balance ― Balance is produced by the visual weight of shapes and forms within a composition. Balance can be symmetrical, in which each side of central line is the same, asymmetrical, or radial. When describing balance, discuss how opposites are utilized or related (light/shadow, straight/curved lines, complementary colors)?

Rhythm ― Rhythm is created by repetition. What repeated elements do you see? Does the repetition create a subtle pattern, a decorative ornamentation? Or does it create an intensity, a tension? Does the rhythm unify the work, or does it seem like a group of disparate parts?

Emphasis ― The emphasis of work refers to a focal point in the image or object. What is your eye drawn to? Does the artist create tension or interest by creating more than one area or interest? Or is the work of art afocal ― that is, the viewer cannot find a particular place to rest the eye. Is there even a psychological focus created through the elements of art?

4 To organize the essay, your overall argument and conclusion should address how the artists used the principle of emphasis.

History 101 Extra Credit Assignment

History 101

Extra Credit Assignment

To earn extra credit, pick one of the movies from the following list.  Write a 1-2 page essay giving me a summary of the movie and telling me how your chosen movie relates to the history we have studied and what you learned from watching it. A good summary including points of both historical accuracies and inaccuracies will earn you up to five points on top of your final grade.  Any analysis over and above the basic may earn you extra points.  Analysis over and above the basic would be, for example, most movies made about historical subjects tell us more about what is going on at the time they are made than it does about the historical subject they’re portraying.  Pay attention to the dates these movies were made, points will be awarded for showing an understanding of the historical context in which they were created. For example, despite the fact that the first Indiana Jones movies ostensibly portray Harrison Ford battling the Nazis, they much more accurately portray Americans’ feelings about the Soviets and the Cold War in the 1980s, when the original movies were made.  The new Indiana Jones, while the only one actually about the Cold War, really shows you a lot more about how Americans think of the War on Terror and the post-Cold War world.  Points will be given for humor and entertainment value.  Copying any portion of your essay from IMDB or any other website will not earn you points, so don’t waste your time (and mine)!

*Double Points*

I, Claudius (1976)  One of my favorite movies of all time, it is really a BBC miniseries, so it’s about twelve hours long.  If you watch the whole thing, and prove to me you didn’t fall asleep in the middle, I’ll give you double points.  This movie covers the development of the Roman empire from the point of view of the emperor Claudius.  It is completely accurate to Suetonius’ Lives of the Caesars, which means it probably isn’t accurate historically, but it is full of all the most salacious gossip about their emperors that a wealthy empire could come up with.

Spartacus (1960) A classic epic film, the fictionalized account of an actual slave revolt that took place in southern Italy under the late Roman Republic.

The Return of Martin Guerre (1982)  The story of a medieval Frenchman who returns to his home village after having been away at war for years.  His friends and family suspect him of being an impostor.  More entertaining than it sounds from this description, it is also interesting because it is a true story, found in the French archives by a historian in the 1970s.

The Lion in Winter (1968) Yes, there is a later remake of this movie, but watch the early one with Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Peter O’Toole as Henry II.  This is the story of Henry’s reign in England in the High Middle Ages, his battles with France over his territories there, and his battles with his family, including his powerful wife and his pain-in-the-neck sons, particularly Richard and John.

The Seventh Seal (1957) An Ingmar Bergman film about the Black Death and its effect on European culture.  Does the film portray the ways that medieval Europeans dealt with the plague, or really just what 1950’s culture thinks about death?

The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) Starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo, this is the story of the painting of the Sistine Chapel, and the difficult relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Julius (the warrior pope).

A Man for All Seasons (1966)  The story of the last years of the life of Thomas More, chancellor to Henry VIII.  More was a committed Catholic and was (spoiler alert!) beheaded because he wouldn’t publicly proclaim that Henry was the rightful supreme head of the Church of England.

Elizabeth (1998) The story of the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England.  Pretty good on the politics, but as most of these movies do, it completely invents a romantic plot line between Elizabeth and one of her courtiers.  You can also watch the sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age if you want.

La Reine Margot (Queen Margot)  This is the story of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, told from the perspective of Margot, or Marguerite, the sister of the king and the one who is being married off to Henry of Navarre, leader of the Huguenots.  It gives an interesting view of the politics of early modern France as well as their religious difficulties.  And, of course, some really bloody massacre scenes.

transcript interview

I shared the instructions for this last week. Continue working on transcribing your interview and please post a complete or partial transcript by Monday, March 29th (after Spring Break). To prepare for this activity, do the following:

  • Review Chapter 6 in Qualitative Methods in Social Work Research, by Padgett, paying particular attention to the guidelines for transcribing an interview on pages 145-149.
  • Review the transcript from your coding exercise in transcription format. Consider the nuances of the format and how transcribing it in this way will help you with coding. Click here to download the formatted transcript .
  • Select one of the interviews you have completed thus far for your research project.

Transcribe your interview verbatim, according to the guidelines below, and post it to this week’s Discussion Board.Guidelines:NOTE: Although you are only transcribing one of your interviews for this activity, for your research project, you are analyzing all of your interviews and will have the option of transcribing all of them or coding your data directly from the audio recordings.1. For formatting your transcript, ensure  that you have a wide margin on the right hand side (about 3.0″) and use 2.5 line spacing.2. Make sure that the transcript is completely de-identified and there is no identifying information on any page of the transcript.  You do not need to assign a case number/identification number to the participant; you can simply use initials or an assigned name. 3. You do not have to use any software to transcribe your interviews. There are software programs that help you slow down the audio as you are transcribing and others that will manually/automatically transcribe for you. These tools are a great way to save time. Please double check any file that you have not personally transcribed to ensure accuracy. In the past, students have used some of the following software programs. Please note that not all of these services are free. Some of these offer trial versions that maybe helpful to you.(I have personally only used Rev.com in the past. I cannot speak to the ease or quality of these other software programs. Please do some research to find what best suits your needs.)Trint: For automatic transcription: https://trint.com/?cn-reloaded=1Rev.com: For paid transcription: https://www.rev.com/Transcribe: https://transcribe.wreally.com/

Assessing a Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation

Program/policy evaluation is a valuable tool that can help strengthen the quality of programs/policies and improve outcomes for the populations they serve. Program/policy evaluation answers basic questions about program/policy effectiveness. It involves collecting and analyzing information about program/policy activities, characteristics, and outcomes. This information can be used to ultimately improve program services or policy initiatives.

Nurses can play a very important role in assessing program/policy evaluation for the same reasons that they can be so important to program/policy design. Nurses bring expertise and patient advocacy that can add significant insight and impact. In this Assignment, you will practice applying this expertise and insight by selecting an existing healthcare program or policy evaluation and reflecting on the criteria used to measure the effectiveness of the program/policy.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation Analysis Template provided in the Resources.
  • Select an existing healthcare program or policy evaluation or choose one of interest to you.
  • Review community, state, or federal policy evaluation and reflect on the criteria used to measure the effectiveness of the program or policy described.

The Assignment: (2–3 pages)

Based on the program or policy evaluation you selected, complete the Healthcare Program/Policy Evaluation Analysis Template. Be sure to address the following:

  • Describe the healthcare program or policy outcomes.
  • How was the success of the program or policy measured?
  • How many people were reached by the program or policy selected?
  • How much of an impact was realized with the program or policy selected?
  • At what point in program implementation was the program or policy evaluation conducted?
  • What data was used to conduct the program or policy evaluation?
  • What specific information on unintended consequences was identified?
  • What stakeholders were identified in the evaluation of the program or policy? Who would benefit most from the results and reporting of the program or policy evaluation? Be specific and provide examples.
  • Did the program or policy meet the original intent and objectives? Why or why not?
  • Would you recommend implementing this program or policy in your place of work? Why or why not?
  • Identify at least two ways that you, as a nurse advocate, could become involved in evaluating a program or policy after 1 year of implementation.

  • Briefly discuss the theories traditionally utilized to deal with the topic for the population you chose based on evidence-based practice.
  • Discuss what engagement methods you would use to build trust and provide effective treatment to the clients you have chosen.
  • Critically synthesize and analyze the primary theory utilized to treat the disorder you selected as applied to the population you selected.
    1. Your analysis must include a review of at least three resources of the theory you selected and include a section on satisfaction of the therapy from the perspective of clients if it is available.
    2. Offer at least two other possible alternative therapies to deal with this disorder rather than the therapy offered. Reference and cite support for the alternative ways from the literature and how an individual’s social justice might be impacted.

Draw conclusions from your analysis and critiques that will be useful to other professionals. Compose this section in a way that can also be shared with clients who are experiencing the issue or topic you selected.

Support your assignment with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

Length: 10-12 pages, not including title and reference pages
