Research Paper Assignment
Instructions

Overview

In developing your expertise in transnational
organized crime (TOC) you will be writing a series of research papers. All
together the writing contained in all these papers combined would be quite
significant project! You will find that in some modules, the research papers
mimic our readings with respect to subject matter and some modules, the
research papers do not mimic the reading. Again, the goal of these research
papers is to stretch the depth and breadth of your knowledge. You should feel
well prepared to teach a course in TOCs after completing this course. The
research papers and PowerPoints you create could serve as the basis for such
class. Additionally, you will find that this course and the course CJUS701
Comparative Criminal Justice Systems complement each other very well.

Instructions

·
Each
research paper should be a minimum of 6 to 8 pages.

·
The
vast difference in page count is because some countries and/or crime/topics are
quite easy to study and some countries and/or crime/topics have very limited
information.

·
In
some instances, there will be a plethora of information and you must use
skilled writing to maintain proper page count.

·
Please
keep in mind that this is doctoral level analysis and writing – you are to take
the hard-earned road – the road less travelled – the scholarly road in forming
your paper.

·
The
paper must use current APA style, and the page count does not include the title
page, abstract, reference section, or any extra material.

·
The
minimum elements of the paper are listed below.

·
You
must use a minimum of 8 recent (some
countries/crimes/topics may have more recent research articles than others),
relevant, and academic (peer review journals preferred and professional
journals allowed if used judiciously) sources, at least 2 sources being the
Holy Bible, and one recent (some countries/crime/topics have more recent than
others) news article.  Books may be used
but are considered “additional: sources beyond the stated minimums. You may use
.gov sources as your recent, relevant, and academic sources if the writing is
academic in nature (authored works). You may also use United Nations and
Whitehouse.gov documents as academic documents.

·
Again,
this paper must reflect graduate level research and writing style.  If you need to go over the maximum page count
you must obtain professor permission in advance! Please reference the Research
Paper Rubric when creating your research paper.

These are minimum guidelines – you may expand the
topics covered in your papers.

1)
Begin
your paper with a brief analysis of the following elements:

a.
Country
analysis

i.
Introduction
to the country

ii.
People
and society of the country

iii.
What
is the basic government structure?

2)
Analyze
the nature of organized crime in the assigned area (you may narrow the scope of
your analysis through your introduction or thesis statement if needed)

3)
Analyze
the impact of organized crime in the assigned area on the government.

4)
Briefly
propose policies that may be helpful in mitigating organized crime in the
assigned area.

5)
A
Holy Bible comparison/analysis of the nature of the organized crime system, the
impact on the country, or your proposed policy to mitigate the system.

The following is an outline of the minimum points to
be covered in your paper – Crime Typology Topics:

These are minimum guidelines – you may expand the
topics covered in your papers…

1)
Analyze
the nature of assigned crime/issue with respect to (at a minimum):

a.
Scope
of the crime/issue

b.
Financial
impact – if possible

c.
Human
impact – if possible

d.
Analysis
of various countries laws dealing with the crime/issue.

Week 1 project for history

Due December 7 at 10:59 PM

Outside Reading Assignment

The history of psychology is built upon understanding the work of particular individuals throughout history. Your textbook mentions several major and minor contributors to the understanding of psychology’s history. However, the textbook is one interpretation of the writings and thoughts of these historical figures. To have a better understanding of those thoughts, you need to read samples of the original works.

  • For this assignment, you will research something that has been written by an individual from the time period(s) being studied (choose a name from the textbook readings) this week.
  • The work must be something written by the chosen person, but need only be a sample of the chosen historical work and involve only a few pages of writing. Make sure the writing deals with the topics being covered this week.
  • There are several sources to use to obtain the works; the best place to start is to search for the person’s name on the Internet using Google but you can only utilize this to find information about the person. Use an original historical work by an author of your choice, but keep in mind that you should use peer-reviewed, academic sources for the analysis of this work. You can most easily find these in the South University Online Library.
  • You can use the textbook to support your work, but do not use it as the primary source. This is an outside reading assignment.
  • After reading the material, answer these questions:
    • What were the main points of the writing?
    • What were the differences and similarities between what you read and what was written about the individual in the textbook?
    • Based on your own views of psychology, how does the author’s viewpoint fit into your current understanding of psychology?

Submission Details:

  • Submit your document to the Submissions Area by the due date assigned.
  • Submit your report in a Microsoft Word document, that includes an APA cover page, reference page, and in text citations throughout the document.

Assignment: Introduction to Quantitative Analysis: Visually Displaying Data Results 8210

In this week’s Discussion, you determined the benefits of visually displaying your data. You also learned that different types of data require different visual displays to adequately “tell the story” of the phenomena. Although the Discussion was difficult, what is even more difficult and challenging will be deciding on how best to display the data for presentation purposes. As you move further along in your dissertation or doctoral study, you will find that displaying data will be critical component in presenting a robust and clear capstone project.

For this Introduction to Quantitative Analysis Assignment, you will explore how to visually display data for optimal use.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources and consider visual displays of data.
  • For additional support, review the Skill Builder: Unit of Analysis and the Skill Builder: Levels of Measurement, which you can find by navigating back to your Blackboard Course Home Page. From there, locate the Skill Builder link in the left navigation pane.
  • Using the SPSS software, open the Afrobarometer dataset or the High School Longitudinal Study dataset (whichever you choose) found in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • From the dataset you chose, choose one categorical and one continuous variable and perform the appropriate visual display for each variable.
  • Once you visually display each variable, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document.

For this Assignment:

Write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis of your results and include a copy and paste of the appropriate visual display of the data into your document.

Based on the results of your data, provide a brief explanation of what the implications for social change might be. Early in your Assignment, when you relate which dataset you analyzed, please include the mean of the following variables. If you are using the Afrobarometer Dataset, report the mean of Q1 (Age). If you are using the HS Long Survey Dataset, report the mean of X1SES.

Use appropriate APA format. Refer to the APA manual for appropriate citation.

***also you must receive a 90 percent or better on this assignment***

PLEASE USE APA STYLE

Week 3 dis DAT

Respond to the following discussion prompt in a minimum of 175 words:

Many business activities generate data that can be thought of as random. An example described in the textbook is the servicing of cars at an oil change shop. Each car entering the shop can be considered an experiment with random outcomes. A variable of interest in this experiment could be the amount of time necessary to service the car. Service time will vary randomly with each car.

We can often capture the most relevant characteristics of a stochastic process with a simple probability distribution model. We can then analyze the model to make predictions and drive decisions. For instance, we could estimate the number of technicians the oil change shop needs to service demand on a Saturday afternoon. Discuss the following:

  • What is a random variable?
  • How would you differentiate a discrete from a continuous random variable?

A laptop manufacturing company has implemented a 2-step process to test the quality of each production batch. In the first step, a technician randomly selects 15 laptops from the batch and determines whether they meet specifications. The batch is considered acceptable provided no more than 1 laptop fails to meet specifications. Otherwise, the entire batch must be tested in the second step. Historical data shows that 95% of the laptops produced adhere to specifications. Discuss the following:

  • What are the 4 characteristics of a binomial experiment?
  • Can we use a binomial distribution to model this process?
  • What is the probability that the entire batch unnecessarily has to be tested if in fact 95% of its laptops conform to specifications? (Hint: Use Excel’s =BINOMDIST() function to find the probability.)
  • What is the probability that the batch is incorrectly accepted if only 75% of its laptops conform to specifications?

Activity #3

1. Using shifts in supply and demand curves, describe a change in the industry in which your firm operates. The change may arise from a change in costs, entry/exit of firms, a change in consumer tastes, a change in the Macroeconomy, a change in interest rates, or a change in exchange rates. Label the axes, and state the geographic, product, and time dimensions of the demand and supply curves you are drawing. Explain what happened to industry price and quantity by making specific references to the demand and supply curves. If more than one change occurred, then decompose the change into smaller pieces so that your explanation has a step-by-step character to it. (Hint and warning: Demand and supply curves are used at the industry level, not at the firm level.) Describe how your company could profitably use the analysis.   2. Snack food vendors and beer distributors earn some monopoly profits in their local markets but see them slowly erode from various new substitutes. When California voted on legalizing marijuana, which side would you think that California beer distributors were on? What about snack food venders? Why?

Policing in America

Police officers are the gatekeepers of criminal justice. They are the ones that initiate criminal proceedings against those accused of crimes and send them on their journey through the criminal justice system. Policing has evolved immensely over the centuries. Since the inception of policing in 1066, we have seen a transformation from ill-equipped, untrained, corrupt, and unsupervised watchmen to the highly trained and supervised police agencies we see today.

Question 1: Using Chapter 4, “Police in Society: History and Organization,” of your textbook, complete the table below.

(example)

Policing initially began as villages protecting each   other from thieves and marauders. This system was overseen by a constable,   appointed by the local nobleman. This system expanded into the watch system   that patrolled larger cities and towns. Watchmen patrolled at night to   protect against robberies, burglaries, and fires. They reported to a constable   making up a sort of primitive police agency.

Citizens   were responsible for keeping their cities and villages safe. Giving citizens   this responsibility made it tougher for criminals to commit a crime   undetected.

While   the people of the village were responsible for reporting crimes, there was no   formal training involved and no oversight to ensure that those responsible   for preventing crimes were not the same ones committing crimes.

1. Back then, counties were known as shires, and head law   enforcement agents in a county were known as shire reves, which is where we   get the modern-day term sheriff.

2. In 1326, the Justice of the Peace was created and the   role of law enforcement expanded beyond just reporting crimes. Justices then also   served warrants, investigated crimes, and supervised the local watchmen.

Question 2: Which time period do you believe has had the greatest impact on policing, and why? Be sure to include your rationale.

Question 3: Social media and technology have greatly affected policing in the past ten years. Please review the links provided for this week on technology and policing along with Chapter 4 in your textbook as you prepare to discuss how technology affects policing in the 21st century.

· How Technology Is Changing Law Enforcement.

· Social Media’s Impact on Incidents Involving Police Use of Deadly Force.

· How Cell Phone Video Impacts Police Work [Video].

· The Benefits (and Limitations) of Body Cameras on Police Officers [Video].

Choose one of these three—cell phones, social media, or police body cams—and explain how it affects policing in today’s society. Describe the pros and cons and provide examples.

Research Project Draft #1

Goal

To put into practice the communication and media research concepts learned throughout the term.

Task

Write a 6-page manuscript outlining a research project to study a communication or media-related topic. Use APA style.

The final manuscript must include the following sections:

  1. Title page
  2. Introduction (1/2 page)
  3. Literature review (1-2 pages)
  4. Research question(s) AND/OR Hypothesis/es
  5. Method (1-2 pages)
  6. References

The project will progress in three phases:

Phase 1 (Draft #1: Due Jan. 24 at 11:59 p.m.)

  1. Title Page
  2. Introduction
  3. Overarching research question(s) [This is the general question about the topic you are interested in.]
  4. References

Guidelines for Phase 1

Think about a situation in which you have found yourself that involved some form of interaction between human beings that had to do with communication and/or media. A night out with friends, a family meal, an afternoon at the movie theater, using social media while sitting in a coffee shop, watching the evening news on TV, reading a newspaper or magazine (either in hard copy or on a screen), going to the stadium, attending a concert, flirting with someone, arguing with a friend or relative about politics, sharing information about a class with another student, playing video games with siblings, friends or strangers (in person or online), etc. The possibilities are countless.

Think about that situation in terms of the messages and channels involved in the interaction, and about something that you find particularly interesting, peculiar, or otherwise unique connected with it. Something you makes you ask yourself a question. For example: Why do the people involved in that kind of interaction behave the way they do? What kind of information do they exchange? What channels, what media, do they use to communicate? Do they use spoken or written words only, or also images and sound, or also other forms of nonverbal communication? Is there anything concerning about the information they exchange, or the way the people involved in the interaction exchange that information, the way they react to the exchange, and maybe seem to act upon those information exchanges?

Use this reflection to identify a preliminary research question for your research project. For example, you might be interested in how people use the internet to socialize remotely when they are unable to do so in person, and decide to focus your research on how younger people “date” virtually. Research questions aimed at investigating such a topic could be, “What online dating services do 18 to 24-year-old Americans us to pursue romantic relationships while socially distancing during the current coronavirus pandemic?” and/or “What factors motivate 18 to 24-year-old Americans to choose a particular online platform to ‘date’ virtually while distancing socially during the current coronavirus pandemic?”

To begin, just phrase a research question. You will have time to refine and narrow it down over the course of the term.

Based on your question, do some basic research on the topic of your research using the library resources and write an introduction for your manuscript. The introduction may rely on both academic and non-academic sources, the latter including news outlets, trade publications as well as non-peer reviewed reports issued by research institutes and governmental agencies. Following our example of a research question on online romance during a pandemic, the introduction could report the latest statistics on the available dating apps, number of users of those apps, number of couples who have gotten married after meeting through online dating services over the past 15, 10 and 5 years, etc. In other words, your introduction should explain why the topic you want to study is relevant – why your reader should care about your research.

In your manuscript draft, reorder the content as indicated above:

  1. Title page (10 points)
  2. Introduction (40 points)
  3. Preliminary research question (40 points)
  4. References (10 points)

Data Analysis and Interpretation

For the Data Analysis and Interpretation assignment, you will assess at least one child using the DIBELS (Links to an external site.), which can be found at https://dibels.uoregon.edu/assessment/index/materialdownload/?agree=true#dibelseight .

From your implementation of the DIBELS (Links to an external site.), use the data collected to analyze and interpret the strengths/weaknesses of the students. Be specific, including the actual data collected in the narrative, in the form of a chart, or another way and describing what the data mean and how you will utilize the results of the data to develop an intervention plan with the student. That is, in order for the audience to understand the data, the data must be specifically interpreted along with a specific plan of action related to the findings from the administration of the DIBELS (Links to an external site.)

***Since you are out of school and do not have access to your students or a classroom of students due to COVID-19, please find at least ONE child that you can assess using the DIBELS (Links to an external site.) to complete this assignment. This could be your child, a neighbor’s child (that is okay with you interacting with their child safely following the CDC requirements for social distancing, wearing masks and gloves, etc.***
