ABC Eyewear Company Background

ABC Eyewear is an organization specializing in manufacturing and  retail sales of eyewear products.  Stated in Japan in 1961, the original  founder of the organization specialised in metal work specific to  eyeglass creation.  Eyeglasses were sold on a local basis with  popularity growing into the 1970s. As the company progressed, the  manufacturing of eyewear became a global business and thus the  need to explore sourcing options as well as a distribution network to  move goods and services.

 Established a formal distribution network in the 1970s

 Supply Chain design for multiple geographies in the 80s &  90s

 Multiple business acquisitions within the 2000s

 Sustained Global souring and manufacturing business at present

Continued background

 The current ABC business model as of 2014

Continued background

ABC continues to target a market with room to further grow and

expand.  Given the below details, there is a tremendous level of

growth within the eyewear industry taking place over the next five

years.  With the correct Supply Chain Optimization, profits will be

captured through efficiencies.

Evaluation of the ABC Supply Chain Processes

ABC Eyewear has established a supply chain which is cantered

around meeting customer expectations.  This is achieved through the

following processes:

 Detailed focus on product design.

 Collaboration between sales and operations teams on a global

basis.

 Strategic placement of facilities to meet consumer demand.

 Fewest number of supply locations to reach the largest impacting

markets.

 Ability to be flexible with changing market conditions

Evaluation of the ABC Supply Chain Processes

Continued

In evaluating the ABC Supply Chain, the functions related to meeting

customer demand are fluid.  The areas for improvement are depicted

within the following diagram. Functions related to business execution

are most critical to the success of planning.

Drivers of Supply Chain Performance

ABC is highly focused on the drivers of the Supply Chain. These

elements help to ensure that more responsive approach is taken. As

ABC must meet consumer demand based on fashion products, there

is a need to be more responsive within the market.

 Critical view of supply chain drivers.

 Product times are important.

 Transportation costs maintained.

 Facility location costs need to be reviewed.

ABC Eyewear Network Design

ABC has emerged into an industry leader based on the ability to

develop a successful network design.  ABC has maintained low costs

related to facility placement which has lead to increased revenue for

the organization. ABC is a leader in souring materials in the emerging

markets which has also lead to cost control and savings while offering  high quality products. These functions are tied together through

ePurchasing which connects suppliers through Information

Technology.

Risk Mitigation within the Supply Chain

A good portion of success can be attributed to risk mitigation.  ABC

has been able to identify potential risks within the Supply Chain and

thus ensure that there are no potential disruptions.  The risk indicators

which ABC has a close watch on are:

 Price fluctuations within the market.

 Exchange rate changes from conducting business in multiple

markets.

 Having multiple levels of sourcing for raw materials to ensure that

no stoppage occurs.

 Adding levels of redundancy to back up systems.

10

Forecasting Practices of ABC Eyewear

ABC uses statistical methods for planning and forecasting of market

demand.  As the eyewear industry is a more mature and stable

market, ABC is able to plan material productions based on historical

data as well as current sales data to arrive at meeting the level of

inventory which is required to achieve customer demand.  The goal is  to ensure equilibrium in matching supply with demand.  ABC employs

the following:

 Push-Pull process

 Long, medium and short range forecasts used

 Quantitative method of forecasting utilized

 Use of trend progressions

 11

Sales & Operations Planning

During the established of ABC, there was a clear need to ensure that  alignment between sales and operations teams was cohesive.  As  there is great detail within the planning process to correctly execute  on the delivery of end products, there was a clear need to join  organizations together to ensure organizational alignment.

 Removed the level of generalization around the planning process.

 Clear identification around resource planning.  Includes guidance  of finance, human resources, marketing and information  technology.

 Closely monitor monthly revenue plans set forth by executive  management.

 Focus on resource capacity.

12

Inventory Management Practices

The ability for ABC to manage inventory levels is a critical component

in reaching desired revenue objectives.  As high associated costs

come with having to hold excess inventory there is focus on cost

mitigation associated with warehousing as well as removal of

inventory which is not selling.  ABC utilizes selling practices to help  move inventory which has become out-dated. In addition ABC

manages inventory levels through the practice of:

 Safety stock, to ensure that there is not gap time in filling customer

orders.

 Centralized facility use to mitigate transportation costs.

 Delayed product differentiation.

13

Use of Transportation within the ABC

Supply Chain

ABC Eyewear uses a global transportation network to manage all

cargo flow processes.  As ABC is both a manufactures and retailer,

there is a need for multiple types of transportation solutions.  ABC is

focused on:

 Cost containment

 Service

 Reliability

 Visibility

 Flexibility

 These are achieved through…

14

Use of Transportation continued

 Cost containment through bid proposals to ensure most effective

rates are obtained in the market place.

 Vetting carriers based on the level of service ability to meet the

needs of the ABC supply chain.

 Reliability in the type of transportation which is offered. Ensuring

that no disruption takes place which could affect customers.

 Visibility through an integrated track and trace system.  If a  customer makes an order, there needs to be end to end view.

 Flexibility during times of peak season, which are the summer and

holiday months for ABC. Ensuring market uncertainty is accounted

for relative to capacity.

 15

ABC Eyewear-Decisions in Sourcing

Sourcing specific to the ABC supply chain has had a great effect on

the level of organizational profitability. ABC has achieved this process

through, reduction of costs, design collaboration from manufacturing

similar types of products, direct communication with suppliers to

ensure process efficiencies and price reductions from direct sources  through the process of proposals and auctions. ABC uses primarily:

 Off-shore sourcing for eyeglass materials.

 Quality can be controlled while maintaining costs.

 Ability to adjust level of strategic flexibility.

 Evaluation process if a need to change suppliers.

16

Use of Information Technology for Supply

Chain Optimization

Information technology is a key contributing factor to the success of

ABC Eyewear.  Through the process of collectively managing all the

organisational functions, a level of visibility is provided to ensure that  transparency is available throughout the supply chain.

17

Use of Information Technology for Supply

Chain Optimization cont.

ABC uses Information technology to monitor inventory levels related

to customer demand.  Market share for ABC within the eyewear

industry can be attributed to the successful implementation of

information systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning.  ABC is

provided continuous visibility within the supply chain which provides  managers with important information in making critical business

decisions.  The benefits to having a successful ERP system for ABC

include:

 A level of control over business functions.

 Improved communications with customers.

 Supply chain integration across new departments.

18

Supply Chain Sustainability with Learning

Outcomes & Recommendations

ABC Eyewear has emerged as an industry leader in fashion eyewear  products. The success of the organization can be attributed to the  optimization and evolution of the supply chain process which have  been reviewed.  ABC has leveraged the successful task of sourcing  materials used in product designs which has provided positive sales  year over year.  The ability to adjust with market trends as well as  changing economic climates has also lent a level of success to the  organization. The five and ten year focus is to remain consistent with  supply chain practices, to be aware of changing market conditions  and make needed adjustments to stay ahead of the competition.  The  following are recommendations for ABC to achieve continued  success:

 Further review with respect to levels of material sourcing.

 Mitigation of high costs related to supplier selection

19

Supply Chain Sustainability with Learning

Outcomes & Recommendations Continued

 By diversifying the supply sections there will be a higher level of  cost competition which could also potentially drive a higher  demand in product quality.

 I would also advise continued reviews of implemented Information  Technologies.

 While there is strength in the current systems of ABC related to ERPs,  the tech industry is moving at such a fast pace that there is a need  to keep a thumb on the pulse of changes to technology and  reporting to ensure the highest level of transparency and visibility.

 Sustainability to the supply chain is critical and ensuring the  optimization is taking place on a continuous basis is vital.  ABC  Eyewear is an industry leader and given the current processes set  in place, ABC will enjoy this level of success for years to come

My refrigerator: sensory description

Please view the photograph and relate it to the following quote:

According to Ethridge, “The same kind of information shows up on each refrigerator: kids’ drawings, letters, refrigerator magnets, little stories, all kinds of kitschy things that seem to express the unconscious values of the owner. When there was a family involved, the fridges were much more chaotic. They seemed to tell life stories.”

Scenario:

Five years ago, John L. Smith decided he wanted to start his own technology service business. He rented some office space, purchased some computer and network equipment, and installed a telecommunications circuit to the Internet. Almost immediately, he started to acquire customers who wanted him to host their business applications and for him to be responsible for the operational availability of the applications. In other words, John would provide the space, servers and local area network equipment, connectivity to the Internet, and an around-the-clock operational support staff. His customers would provide the business application software, and they would manage it remotely.

During the first 5 years, John’s business grew substantially. He had to relocate his offices three times, add computer and network equipment, increase the bandwidth and connectivity to the Internet, and hire numerous administrative and technical support staff.

As John needed to add computer hardware, he would negotiate with local retail stores and purchase the lowest cost equipment. If he needed additional communication services, he would go to the local telephone company to add the bandwidth and connectivity he believed he needed.

Starting his sixth year in business, John has over 30 major long-term contracts, a 20,000 square foot data center, over 400 servers; and 100 full-time employees. Additionally, he hosts 50 major business applications for his customers.

The organization configuration is fairly simple. John has set up an extremely flat organization in which the majority (approximately 80%) of the staff are technical or operations support (network, server, applications, operating systems, and database). Additionally, there is one contract, five helpdesk, one project manager, and five administrative support staff. John does all of the marketing and sales and personally negotiates each contract.

The cost structure is set up as follows:

  • Floor space (includes utilities, rent, water, and so forth): $100/square foot (John pays $25/square foot)
  • Hardware (servers): Actual cost of each server as well as the number of servers required (customers reimburse John for parts)
  • Labor: $25/hour as required for break/fix, updates, and so forth
  • Internet connectivity: Cost per month spread across all contracts

Each month, hours are tabulated and additional costs are billed to each customer.

Over the past several years, John has been one of the few providers in this hosting business; however, competition is now starting to challenge his company from a cost, efficiency, quality, and the kinds of services provided. Additionally, existing customers are starting to complain about slow response times, degradation of services, poor quality, lack of communication, and rising costs. In the past, when a customer made a request, the organization has accommodated for that request. As of recently, John is taking responsibility for nearly half of the customer applications to include updates and changes.

A number of the customers have told John that they will have to reduce their effort with him if the service-related issues are not corrected. A couple of them have sent correspondence to John stating the following:

  • Response times: When they provide updates and changes, the support staff is taking longer and longer to implement the changes.
  • Service degradation: The availability of the hardware platforms is trending downward. Where the platforms were available around the clock, they are now suffering from some frequent and long outage periods.
  • Quality: When updates and changes are implemented, they are often not installed correctly and have to be reinstalled.
  • Communication: Whether changes to the platforms or coordinating outages, the support team does not notify the customers and the issues are beginning to impact their revenue stream.
  • Costs: In the past, when additional equipment was needed, John purchased, installed it, and billed it back to the customer each month. Also, the cost of support over the past few years has been steadily increasing.

John is now beginning to wonder whether he should outsource or even offshore some of the functions and services he is offering to an organization that specializes more in a specific area. He has contacted a number of outsourcing organizations as well as an organization in India that might be able to run his service center help desk. The cost seems to be less expensive than what he is able to provide to his customers. Also, he thought it might be a good idea because he is starting to expand his company to global customers. He now has two smaller contracts with European customers, and this appears to be an area that is going to grow.

Your task starts with assisting Smith with an assessment of his current business situation. Then, you will assist him in developing an operations strategy that can be used to improve his operational performance and business profile. The overall goal of assisting Smith is to help him assess and determine how each of these areas impacts his business and recommend some solutions so he can optimize his operations and competitive profile.

ManagingSport, Inc. Case Study

Nathan Hamel has been an employee of ManagingSport, Inc., since its inception. His career began as a paid intern helping with marketing the new company. Hamel impressed the executives at ManagingSport with his organizational skills, creativity, reliability, work ethic, and ability to work closely and effectively with individual staff members as well as clients. Upon completion of his internship and graduation from college, ManagingSport hired him fulltime as assistant director of marketing. During his tenure at ManagingSport, Hamel has worked in many departments within the organization: sales, marketing, public relations, and programming. His goal was to obtain an executive position in the company, so, he sought to learn how the entire organization operated. He always received good performance evaluations, which led to his being appointed vice president of ManagingSport, Inc. this past year.

ManagingSport has 23 employees who work in various capacities toward the accomplishment of the company’s mission: to assist organizations within the sport industry with their business operations. ManagingSport’s aim is to work jointly with clients in the development of business plans and the accomplishment of organizational goals. Its employees work with clients to design and implement activity programs to meet the client’s general and specific goals.

As vice president, Hamel works directly with groups of people within and outside the organization. This is in contrast to his previous roles within the organization, in which he worked with individuals as opposed to groups. Therefore, his strategies of motivating staff members and clients will need to change.

Recently, Hamel has noticed that many company employees are less productive than they used to be. Employee performance evaluation ratings are lower, and overall morale seems to be down. Staff members are arriving late for staff meetings, and some have even missed the meetings. Clients have reported that phone calls and emails have not been returned in a timely manner. Client reports and programs are submitted late, and many times they need corrections before being sent out. These behavior patterns are of great concern to Hamel as it is a poor reflection on ManagingSport and on him.

In order to get the situation under control, Hamel met informally with a number of employees to discuss the situation. He learned that many employees feel overworked and underpaid. The number of ManagingSport employees has decreased during the past three years from 28 to 23, with no new employees being hired. Some employees have taken on more responsibilities with no reward—“not even a thank you,” in their words. Other employees noted that ManagingSport, Inc. is falling behind in technology. Computers are old and often use outdated software, or they are unable to operate software programs used by their clients. Employees feel embarrassed about this situation. Some have even purchased personal laptops and tablets that they use for work projects.

Hamel made an appointment to discuss the situation with the president of ManagingSport, Inc., Mr. Frey. Frey did not seem too concerned and said, “This behavior is nothing new. It has been going on for at least two years. That is why I appointed you as vice president. I figured that you work well with people and that you would be able to motivate our employees. Therefore, I am charging you with developing a conceptual framework on how to improve employee motivation at ManagingSport. Please have a draft of your proposal on my desk next week.”

Hamel was stunned by this conversation. As he walked back to his office, Hamel wondered why this problem had just surfaced and why Frey had not mentioned it earlier. As he pondered the situation, Hamel was also thinking of strategies he could develop to motivate ManagingSport employees.

1. How do you think Hamel’s experiences at ManagingSport influence how other employees perceive him?

2. What do you think are some of Hamel’s motivations for joining ManagingSport in the first place? How did Hamel’s motivation change when ManagingSport hired him fulltime? Which motivational theories do you think could be applied to Hamel’s motivation(s)? Explain.

3. What role has Frey played in the motivation of Managing Sport employees? Do Hamel and Frey have the same or different motivations in their respective roles of vice president and president? Explain.

4. As vice president of Managing Sport, what strategies might Hamel develop to motivate employees to return phone calls and emails in a timely manner, attend meetings, and submit professional reports? Which motivational theories could Hamel use? What actual practices could Hamel implement to cause changes to employees’ negative behaviors?

5. If you were in Hamel’s shoes, what other changes would you make to fix any of the issues listed? Because resources are limited, prioritize your list of potential changes and discuss the costs and benefits associated with each.

UNIT 2 DB HRMT620

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Additional Information: The briefing to John and the board of directors was a success. You and Shawn believe that it allowed them to understand the challenges associated with managing global human capital effectively and the value of recognizing human capital as a critical part of AGC’s strategic plan. John and the board of directors gave every indication that they understood the sense of urgency needed to align the key global human capital goals with those established for the entire global organization. In fact, they asked you to move ahead with developing global human capital goals for AGC as part of its strategic plan.

You will begin by evaluating the existing organizational culture and analyzing the leadership styles used at each global AGC subsidiary. The company has several global subsidiaries, each with significant cultural differences. Shawn believes that AGC would benefit from an organizational culture that is more proactive and competitive. Likewise, he believes that leadership development programs should focus on styles that recognize the importance of celebrating diversity, empowerment, and innovation.

Review the AGC scenario for this course and discuss the following with your peers:

  • Using AGC as an example, what human capital management problems can arise when an organization does not acknowledge cultural differences at its global subsidiaries?
  • How can leadership styles effect global organizational culture?
  • Describe a human capital management goal that Shawn can recommend to change the global organizational culture of AGC.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

The General Education Teacher would like you to create a Pre-test and Post-test that aligns to the common core standard below:

Step 1 – Unpack the 5th grade mathematics standard. Select a knowledge and skill of focus from the standard.

Step 2- Write a lesson plan objective that aligns to the standard.

Step 3 – Research pre-test and post-test assessment types and alternatives.

    Step 4 –
Create a pre-test that aligns to the common core standard and objective.
Create a post-test that aligns to the common core standard and objective.

    Step 5-
Adapt the pre-test and post-test by adding a total of 4 (2 for the pre-test) (2 for the post-test) accommodations for a student with Autism.
