Article Review Instructions

After reading through your assignments this week, you are to pick a topic of interest that was mentioned in the reading assignment. Using the Jerry Falwell Library and other scholarly resources, you are to locate a peer reviewed journal related to the topic of your interest. Read the journal article thoroughly so you can discuss it. If you wish to use something other than a peer reviewed journal, please consult with your instructor before starting the assignment. 

You will then prepare an article review related to the topic that you researched in the research/reading assignments from the assigned module/week. The article review that you create must be at least 750 words and be formatted according to 7th edition APA style. 

Use the following section order to guide you in building your article review but do not use the numbers in your section headers, only the names. Also, this is example is not in APA style, make sure your review follows APA styles, this is a guide NOT a template.

1. Bibliographical Reference:

a. Create a single bibliographical entry in 7th edition APA style in the first section of your paper. This should include:

i. Detail the author(s) of the article

ii. Name of the Journal (including volume, issue, year, page numbers, etc.)

iii. Name of the article you are reviewing.

b. Note – You may also choose to identify the article you are reviewing (i.e. – The focus of this review will be “Article Name” published in “Journal Name” in “Year/Month”) and then simply cite it in a bibliographical entry at the end (see section 7).

 

2. Objectives:

a. After reviewing the article, use a bulleted list to identity the 3 to 5 primary points you feel the article addresses.

b. Simply put the bulleted list of those points in your Objectives section with something to the effect of “After reviewing “Article Name” the three main points addressed by the author(s) were: 

· Bullet one

· Bullet two

· Bullet three

 

3. Summary:

a. Summarize the article you reviewed in approximately 2 or 3 full paragraphs. 

b. Do not use direct quotes at all. If you need to quote it, paraphrase what you read. 

c. Use the bullets above (section 2b) to structure what you wish to discuss in this summary (i.e. – In the first paragraph, summarize the article section which addresses the first bullet in 2b and so on).
 

4. Results:

a. Now that you have read this article and summarized it, what do you feel that a reader can learn about the topic from the article?

b. Using bullet points, highlight the things you feel like you learned more about after reading this article. It’s best to keep this list to a maximum of 5 bullets. 

c. Note – these bullets should not be identical to the bullets in the Objective Section (2b).

 

5. Critique:

a. Use this section to provide an academic critique of the article. 

i. How well (or poorly) was this article written? 

ii. Did it accomplish the objectives it set out to do (think back to the Objectives section)?

iii. Why or why not?

b. Explain your opinion and offer some additional sources (no more than one or two) to support that opinion. 

c. When possible, address the subject matter from a biblical perspective (e.g. – the Bible teaches us to… and this article addresses that by…)

 

6. Questions:

a. List a minimum of 3 (no more than 5) questions that arose from the reading of this article in a numbered list. 

b. Consider any thing you feel like you should have learned from the article but did not. 

c. Note – These questions may spark your desire to review other matter on the topic and may even be used as a starting point for one of your two research papers (though this is not required).

 

7. Bibliography:

a. You need to use one other sources to support or deny your opinion and if you chose to only identify the article in section 1, you will want to make a bibliography.

b. Follow 7th edition APA guidelines for Bibliographies as outlined in the 7th edition APA (Current ed.).

Option 1: Traditional Recap Assignment

Instructions: 

After reviewing the material for the chapter, you are to answer the following questions in 5 to 7 sentence responses per question set (group of questions, #1, #2, etc.) . Please remember to consider all questions being asked and to use material from the chapter to support your responses. 

Your responses should demonstrate a clear engagement and understanding of the course material, critical application of the sociological concepts/theory and should include clear grammar and sentence structure. Please review the assignment rubric under ‘Course Resources’ for clearer indication of grading distribution and let  me know if you have any questions/concerns. 

Questions:

How would a conflict theorists explain the reasons why some populations are allowed to be more deviant and criminal than others? (think about race, ethnicity, gender, sex, etc.) How would a conflict theorist critique the fact that certain populations of color are over-represented in the US prison system? How could you apply this logic to the recent ‘Anti-Social Distancing’ ‘protest’ that have occurred around the US in recent days?

To better understand the idea that race is a social construction and the real life impact that it has on individuals, I would like for you to research the effect that  the corona-virus (Covid-19) has had on xenophobia, hate crimes and the perceptions of race in the US. Find one article or news story about xenophobia and the corona-virus. How does this article demonstrate the concepts of racialization, racial formation and racial projects? Now you should use one of the three theoretical paradigms to analyze the story. Please provide the link to the news story. 

Read the following scenario and answer the questions below. Your entire response for this question should be about 5 to 7 sentences in length (minimum)As usual, 24-year-old Carla left her apartment around 10:00 p.m. to jog to her boyfriend Casey’s apartment two miles away. She planned to spend the night with him and jog back home the next morning. Carla lived in a fairly safe neighborhood in Centerdale, but Casey lived in a dilapidated apartment complex that was mostly hidden off the main road, between a bar called Bikers-R-Us and a two-story county office complex used by probation officers and drug rehab counselors. Carla usually arrived between 10:15 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., but when she failed to reach his place by 11:00 p.m., Casey got worried. He started calling Carla on her cell phone, but the calls kept going to her voice mail. He called and informed the police. Before calling the police, however, he hid the methamphetamine that he had already prepared for a couple of Carla’s clients who were supposed to arrive at midnight. He also hid the marijuana that he was planning to smoke with Carla. The police found Carla’s body within ten minutes in an area covered with trees, between the main road and the apartment complex where Casey lived. An investigation showed that Carla had been sexually assaulted. She had died of strangulation. Task: What theories of victimology relate to Carla’s case of victimization? Option 2: Spotlight on Police Brutality 

For this option, you will do a short research project on the social/political implications of the police brutality. You should find some evidence of the impact of police brutality on particular communities and groups. Find at least two cases of police brutality within the last 5 years (please include a reference page with your source information). You can respond in the written form (minimum of 1.5 pages double spaced and include an APA formatted reference page, this should serve as practice for your essay), you can respond in a minimum 5 to 7 minute oral essay in which you answer the questions (you can record yourself via video/audio and upload your recording and you should still upload a reference page) or you could create a short 5 to 7 minute PowerPoint presentation in which you include the answers to the questions and provide some more insight. Your short presentation should include at least 8 slides of information and you should record your presentation and submit your file here.

Exercises like this assignment will help you expand upon your research and communication skills. 

Instructions:

•  Write a two (2) to three (3) page paper in APA format based upon, how Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is used in the entertainment industry.
• There are many forms of ADR.  Pick three forms to discuss. 
• Define each form of ADR you have chosen and how each form works.  Additionally, apply a minimum analysis of how ADR would or would not reduce expenses, protect privacy, and be more efficient with time.
• Provide an analysis of a case study that utilized ADR or in the alternative, analyze how another dispute could have been handled differently if ADR had been utilized.
• Collect a minimum of five (5) resources using online databases, such as EBSCOhost and LexisUni. You may use other reliable online sources, but two must be from the Full Sail Library.
• You need to include a title page and reference page, which are not included in the page count.

Here are some important points to remember:

• Make sure to use an in-text citation after every sentence that contains a fact or assertion. In other words, there should be an in-text citation after every single sentence unless it’s clearly an opinion. For example, “one may argue that the Beatles were the greatest band of the 20th Century.”  That is clearly an opinion whereas, writing, “The Beatles were the greatest band of the 20th Century”, is stating a fact and must be backed up by a credible source with an in-text citation.
• Do not write in first person. APA does not allow it.
• Full Sail policy states that your paper should not contain more than 10% quoted material.  Therefore, utilize your ability to paraphrase.

Week 3 Training Archive

This week we are discussing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).  Please review the archived session below and I encourage you to review APA style writing.  I expect an in-text citation after every single sentence, unless it is clearly an opinion.  You will be receiving an email from me later this week with turnitin.com registration information.

Additionally, I am providing you with some helpful hints when writing in APA and they are as follows:

1) Font – Times New Roman

2) Font size – 12 pt.

3) Spacing – Double

4) Don’t forgot about the Running Head

5) page number (top right hand corner of paper)

6) Margins 1 inch all 4 sides

7) No Bold type only if you use sub headings.

8) No underlining

9) Only use quotations when directly quoting another source (only quote 10% or less of your paper)

10) References page is in alphabetical order of the author’s last name, if no author, then the title.

Here are some words of wisdom:

It is better to over cite than to under cite.

In other words, do not Plagiarize. You MUST have an in-text citation after EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE unless it’s your own thought or common knowledge. Even if you paraphrase a source, your sentence MUST have an in-text citation.

In Text Citations are (Author’s last name, year source was published) Ex. (Smith, 2014). If quoting from a book (Author’s last name, Year published, page number) Ex. (Jones, 2014, p. 5). If a website without an author (Website address up to the .com, year published). Ex. (msn.com, 2015). If you mention the author within the sentence, you still need to provide the year published and a page number if it’s a book. Ex. Smith states in his book, higher learning, that everyone can accomplish his or her goals (2014, p. 89).

When you quote in APA format, you are only allowed to quote 40 words at a time unless you are block quoting, be careful here as block quoting will take up a majority of your 10% that you are allowed to quote.

The use of quotations is very specific in APA. You should only use quotes when directly taking another author’s words directly and that sentence should always be followed up with an in-text citation. When emphasizing a word use italics only. For example, if you want to emphasize the word, wow. You would simply use italics within the sentence: ex. John said wow when Mary walked into the room.
